ROAM for the Holidaze 7: Gyrosonic Projections for Past Worlds and Future Times
Happy Nearly New Year, ROAMers! As the new year approaches we come closer to the threshold that divides us from Then and Now. It is a time where we look back to preserve just as we look forward to divest.    The two-faced Janus looks both forward and backward, blessed with a double-vision that allows for seeing into the future and the past at the same time. Here at ROAM, we believe that sound recording and manipulation allow sound scientists to create new hybrid soundforms that are capable of replicating the Janus’s peculiar visual enhancement but for the ears instead of the eyes. In this seventh installment of our ROAM for the Holidaze compilation we unveil the fruits of some of the greatest examples of this type of soundform cultivation. Listening both forward and backward as present memories give way to future nostalgias, our contributors share intimate moments, fantasies, nightmares, and the joys of making a racket. Won’t you lend us your ears for the latest in this sonically satisfying holiday tradition? HUGE THANKS to our collaborators (in the order they appear): Todd Fink. Derek Pressnall, Dave Hughes, Sam Martin, Dereck Higgins, Jordan Noel, Madeline Adams, Beije, Magicicada, Cole Alexander & Zumi Rosow, Katie Robertson, Clyde Petersen, Zopi Kristjanson, Wil Wright, & Longmont Potion Castle. Headphones required. [Champagne bottle pop SFX] Formed in 2009, ROAM is an experimental podcast series that features themed found sound collages gathered from artists across the world. Listen to last year’s compilation. ROAM is for your ears to see

ROAM for the Holidaze 6: A Greeting Card for your Eardrums
With the sixth installment of ROAM for the Holidaze, we asked our contributing artists (Cole Alexander of Black Lips, Dave Hughes of Adult Swim’s Off the Air, members of Zombi, Icky Blossoms and more) to send an aural holiday greeting card; a collage that sonically summed up 2015. We wanted to hear harvested sounds married to found elements, captured melodies and original compositions. The 50 minute audio time capsule you hear now is signed, sealed and delivered to your ears on this, the first day of 2016. Happy ROAM year!
A huge thank you to the artists that participated in this year’s compilation!

Greetings, ROAM-ers!****
Today we are thrilled to announce the launch of The Cryptophonic Tour, a groundbreaking collaboration between Historic Oakland Cemetery and ROAMtransmissions.
The Cryptophonic Tour is a sonic exploration of Historic Oakland Cemetery’s unique aural histories. It is also the inaugural event in Oakland’s brand new Arts at Oakland program.
A specially selected group of Atlanta-based sound, multimedia, and performance artists will produce work that engages directly with Oakland’s rich but little known sonic past.
On Saturday, May 2, 2015, over a dozen artists will install works of sound and multimedia art at 12 designated sites throughout the cemetery.
Spectators will interact with these works via self-guided tours, and these cryptophonic installations will be active continuously throughout the runtime of the event.
Additionally, The Cryptophonic Tour’s program will feature performance art and music inspired by Oakland’s aural past as well as conversations with scholars, writers, and researchers who specialize in the relationships between death, music, and memorialization in American history.
Participating sound, multimedia, and performance artists include: Paige Adair, Madeline Adams, Shorty Bedford, Tera Buerkle, Chris Childs, Chris Devoe, Chelsea Dunn, Dust-to-Digital Sound System, Jane Garver, Meta Gary, Jesse Karlsberg, Meredith Kooi, Michika McClinton, Ryan Peoples, Grace Thornton, Chris White and Old King Cole Younger.
The event will also feature presentations and discussions in the form of Graveside Chats with Emory University professor Gary Laderman, researcher and Oakland Cemetery tour guide Pat Powers, and the author of American Afterlife Kate Sweeney.
The Cryptophonic Tour will function as a one-day arts and culture festival, replete with food and drink vendors, that celebrates hitherto invisible/inaudible facets of Oakland’s history by focusing spectators’ attentions to the activities of listening and the sense of hearing.
ROAMtransmissions was awarded a 2014 Idea Capital Atlanta grant in support of this project. To learn more check out this profile that was published at BURNAWAY earlier this year.
