This spring, cicada Brood XIV will emerge in the eastern US! This is the second-largest periodical cicada emergence on the planet (after Brood XIX, which emerged last year).
Expect to see them in parts of the following states from May to June in 2025: KY, TN, IN, OH, WV, GA, NC, MD, PA, NY, MA.

If you would like to learn more, I highly recommend my newest book - The Cicadas of North America - which contains over 400 full-color illustrations of every cicada species on the continent*!
*(except for the two new ones from Martinique and Guadeloupe that were just described in August)

"Magic Cicada" (2024)
Acrylic paints on 11" x 14" wood panel Based on the 17 year cicada (Magicicada sp.) which is already making an incredible emergence this year across the southeastern United States. Multiple broods are emerging this summer, something that is very rare and breathtaking to experience.

when i was on my “cicada trip” in illinois, i found a lot of cicadas that died while molting. after 17 years underground, dying during their big transition. i found it very sad but also kind of beautifully cool? i had to draw it!
when these types of cicadas are molting, they’re white as their exoskeleton hasn’t hardened yet. their exoskeleton becomes black as it hardens

Periodic cicada on the front porch!
It's the first one I've seen this year. I've been hearing a few sporadically calling for days. There will be more. So many more.

I made Benoit in honor of the periodical Magicicadas. Unfortunately, where I live is just slightly further north (about 100 miles) than where they are emerging🖤

Periodical Cicadas (Genus Magicicada)

Linne Woods - Chicago, IL - May 10th, 2024
These nymphs were the first of the periodical cicadas I would see last year and man oh man were they an absolute joy to experience. I wouldn't see any adults for about 10 more days and I very likely will be making multiple posts about them because they were just so wonderful and brought so much joy to what ended up being a very terrible time.
As for the nymphs themselves they were so funny to watch, they move so awkwardly it was really interesting. I also loved looking for the holes they made in the soil.
