🏳️‍🌈Urgent Plea for Attention to the Perils Faced by we LGBTQIA+ Refugees in Kakuma Refugee Camp

I pen down these words with a heavy heart, burdened by the pressing concerns that plague the lives of LGBTQIA+ refugees and asylum seekers within the confines of Kakuma Refugee Camp, under the purview of UNHCR KENYA.

In our quest for freedom, equality, and justice, we find ourselves disheartened and unsatisfied by the seemingly indifferent stance maintained by UNHCR KENYA, which appears to turn a blind eye to our collective voices. The prevailing violence within various sectors of the camp, coupled with the targeting of our innocent queer lives by both the camp and Kenya itself, has created an environment of fear and oppression. Victims of brutality, though desiring to speak out, are silenced by threats from various operative bodies operating within the camp.

The escalating fear among queer advocates and activists within the camp is palpable, as we grapple with unpublished instances of violence that leave many among us unsettled and deeply concerned about our survival. Living in an environment that has historically viewed us through a lens of sinfulness, we have become accustomed to being ignored and neglected, devoid of the inclusiveness we so desperately seek.

As UNHCR collaborates with entities like the Global Refugee Forum (GRF) to host blogs ostensibly aimed at protecting refugees and asylum seekers, the isolation we experience from the protective measures against the violent community we endure renders our lives increasingly susceptible to injustice. The tragic deaths of our peers, a somber reality we face, only intensify the depression that looms large in our minds, as we fear that they may not be the last victims of violence against our community.

Our earnest plea extends to the leadership of UNHCR to reconsider the safety of our innocent queer lives. We, as queer refugees and asylum seekers, sought refuge in Kenya with the hope of finding protection, support, and resettlement in places where our existence is not only respected but safeguarded by the law.

The challenge-filled life we lead is fraught with sorrowful moments and stories, misrepresented by the very bodies entrusted with our protection. Our voices, yearning for justice, should not be misconstrued as political threats; rather, they echo the desperate cries of innocent lives subjected to discrimination, persecution, and social stigma.

We beseech the world to lend an ear to our voices, advocating for equality and freedom. We implore you to amplify our cries for justice, sharing our messages of sadness, so that the plight of LGBTQIA+ individuals in Kakuma Refugee Camp is brought to light. It is not a prerequisite to be a member of our community to stand as an advocate for our lives – all voices of advocacy and support are crucial in rectifying these pervasive injustices.
