ROSSINI OPERA FESTIVAL |  IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA
During this year’s pandemic, many important theater events and festivals all moved online. As a huge opera fan myself, I am very much delighted to see this new opportunity to see world’s best opera on YouTube. This is a livestreaming of the famous opera  IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA (A Barber in Serbia) by Rossini, and I also have seen this opera but another version----Royal Opera House. This light opera is about a young man who admires a beautiful young girl in the town but the girl’s father does not permit anyone too see his daughter. In order to date with the girl, the young man asks for a local barber for help. Through different tricks, finally the young man gains the love of the beautiful girl through the help of the barber. In fact the opera is very funny and full of jokes, its songs are also very pleasant to listen to. The most famous song from this opera is called  Largo al factotum (Make Way for the Busy Man). In fact, if you watched the cartoon Tom and Jerry growing up, you might recognized this song. Yes sure, great cartoons as Tom and Jerry does incorporate a lot of classical music in their background music.
Here I have the links for different version of this song:

Why IB Theater? A student’s perspective
Hey guys! This is my first time making a video so there is much space for improvements. I said at the beginning that this is a short video, but it turns out to be quite long. But still, worth your time! In the future, I will also make videos to talk about my IB Theater experience for you as a reference.

Cornell Summer Session
Shakespeare on Stage!
Tumblr media
Hello everyone! I realized that I haven't update my blog for a very long time… sorry for the delay, I was doing my SAT prep this summer, so I really was struggling and not playing! However, the most meaningful part of my summer vacation was not my SAT prep, but the Cornell Shakespeare on Stage Summer Program! Although due to pandemic, everything had been shift online, I still had a very meaningful experience with my classmates zooming!
This summer program lasts for three weeks, and it also worth three credits. Together we read five Shakespeare plays, from Richard III to Romeo and Juliet, to King Lear, to Macbeth, and finally to Hamlet. I have to admit that 3 weeks were obviously too short for those classics, but the professor really did a very good job to guide us through the Shakespeare’s world by dissecting some monologues in the plays. For every play, he assigned us reading homework and then let us discuss some specific scenes or characters in class. The class discussions were terrific, and for this I have to thank my wonderful classmates. Some of their opinions and perspectives were truly captivating and insightful, which also broaden my view on Shakespeare.

I think Professor Bruce is pretty cool!
Don't be scared by Shakespeare! Although the language is hard, our professor Bruce did manage to help us to appreciate the real fascinating part of Shakespeare. After this class, I think you will gain an insight about how and why Shakespeare is such great author. This class is also not a strict academic class, and we also looked over a lot of clips from different version of the Shakespeare adapted movies. After carefully analyzing the texts, you will find that some interpretations are very interesting while others are just nonsense. The wonderful part of Shakespeare plays is their possibilities for interpretations, but if the interpretations are not based on the texts, they are not good interpretations. After this class, I really learned how to analyzing classical text as well as digging the subliminal plays, so I can watched those adapted movies critically with clear eyes.
If you really love both theater and literature like me, this summer program is extremely suited for you! Unlike other popular programs such as Biology and Finance, Shakespeare summer program is not very competitive to apply. But the class atmosphere and the professor are still great! In turns for next year, you will get a chance to go to the beautiful Cornell Campus in Ithaca, which I did not. Here is a link to the web page of the program: https://sce.cornell.edu/precollege/program/shakespeare
Hope you have a nice day~
