Hozier was so real for writing It Will Come Back cause I, too, would crawl pathetically back to someone who's shown me love once like a wild little creature who's just learned what kindness and warmth feels like for the first time.

sex isn't sexy unless it's a little bit gross. have you forgotten that you are a divine ape? plastic smooth skin, plucked hair, painted faces, scripted reactions, scrubbed til only the smell of perfumed soap remains, proportions that are conflictingly cookiecutter yet unattainable, none of this is even a little bit interesting.
you can laugh at napoleon's "home in three days, don't bathe" letter to his wife, but there's more sexuality in that one line then there is in the entirety of the hypersexualized but painfully unsexy internet.

It is so disingenuous when supermarkets have "grown by: Farmer X" on their packaging because it's like, I'll be looking at a pack of strawberries grown by farmer x and he'll actually be the managing director of a fruit farm that employs 2,000 people as pickers!

Fic in Times of Fascism
I've been reading and hearing a lot of my USA-based artist friends share the sentiment of feeling unmoored and purposeless in their contribution to society post-inauguration - a lot of "what's the point?" and "nothing I do makes a difference" going around.
It is no mistake that this is how artists are feeling. This feeling that we are combating - that the arts are frivolous, that the arts make us weak, that the arts don't deserve funding - that is a right-wing talking point. That is something they want us to internalize, to replicate, to spread. It is not a bug, it is a feature.
Art-making is necessarily expressive - it is about connecting an artist with an audience, it is necessarily a communal experience that brings people together - and these are things that disrupt the work of fascism. It is so easy to fall down the line of thinking of "why am I just writing stupid fanfic when so much is at stake?", but we must reject this line of thinking.
There are reasons why art, especially fic, is so publicly penalized and defunded. Fascism thrives on terror and isolation; we as artists create community, communication (often of helpful resources), comfort in abundance. That's why it feels like you can't get through to whoever in your life has been radicalized to the right: the fear is the point. THe more people are afraid, the easier they are to control. When your body is in a state of fight/flight/fawn you can not make rational decisions. And the things that disrupt that agenda - the things that ask people to be present and to be in community with others and to reflect, to express themselves, to generate empathy for others - those are the things that give people a chance to pause and to take their bodies out of fight/flight/fawn. Art is one of these things, and it is dangerous to fascism because art creates community and gives space to reflect.
I won't say that only art will save us from the regime we are beginning to experience. But the arts are a big part of it, because art is inherently an act of creation, of nurturing, of fostering community and empathy.
Quote James Baldwin - "The world is held together, really it is held together, by the love and the passion of a very few people. Otherwise, of course, you can despair. Walk down the street of any city, any afternoon, and look around you. What you've got to remember is what you're looking at is also you. Everyone you're looking at is also you. You could be that person. You could be that monster, you could be that cop. And you have to decide, in yourself, not to be."
Acts of destruction, of division, of terror are always going to be easier than acts of nurturing and care and connection and compassion. It's not fair. It's not fair that the compassionate few have to fight for their own survival while also helping others and building a future that improves the quality of life for all. But that is exactly what you're helping to do as an artist. Even with your "silly little" fanfics.
It is no mistake that they silence us first by silencing our creativity, our freedom to speak in a medium that gives us plausible deniability; the medium of criticism that allows us to say "maybe the curtains are just blue, dummy" when the oppressors start barking up our tree of resistance. But you speak, and so you resist: by putting language to your frustration, to your fear, to your rage. And you must not cease speaking.
Choosing to take the time and the effort to connect and to create is a radical act. And there is nothing silly or little about that. Keep creating.
