Blanket Permission Statement for Podfic
I just listened to this filk podfic asking folk to add blanket permission statements to their works.
https://archiveofourown.org/chapters/169939036
They also link to this (https://www.inklewriter.com/stories/115743 ) which describes a fandom permission statement and this BP Highlighter on GitHub https://github.com/BrickGrass/Blanket-Permission-Highlighter
I've always felt a little weird about blanket permission statements, because I have been more of a Creative Commons kinda girl, and it seems like these two permission systems are exclusive from each other.
Blanket Permission statements were things made within the fandom community as a way to speed up the process of asking for permission to make a derivative work. Do you need permission to make a derivative work?
No, but if you don't ask, since US law says that permission is retained by the author by default, they can content block you after you went to the trouble to make the podfic or derivative work, and it will need to be taken down.
So, fans said, "Can you please tell us that we can make derivative works from your stuff?" and the default way to do this is a blanket permission statement.
But, what if I want to retain the right for me to podfic it first? I end up having a much longer permission statement which for me is simply an "ask first".
But I am concerned that corporations might take the blanket permission statement as equivalent to releasing into the public domain which in creative commons language is CC0. I usually prefer to release things CC attribution which means, at least admit that I wrote it.
So, I would like AO3 to add a provision to give out a CC license for works. The copyleft licenses could allow me to request some works be non-commercial and others to be public domain or attribution.
Our fan statements are not licenses at all. They are "gentlepeople's agreements" and although they work as long as we stay a small group of similarly minded people. They are ripe for abuse as the community becomes more mainstream.
Thoughts?

This is one of the biggest problem with being a fan of Chinese BL. The fact that if you express love for it too loudly it will be removed, and the actors, producers, authors, might be cancelled, punished, or even jailed.
And even if the official reason isn't stated, this fear stands over every fandom interaction.
The untamed survived, some say, by being too big to take down, but Word of Honor was limited, and one of it's lead actors cancelled so he left dramas completely.
The feeling that , if you do this, you must hide it and be ashamed, is one that I have sadly heard gaining traction lately in the United States in responses about gay and transgender media in libraries.
I hope this kind of censorship does not spread around the world, because it is a sad, sad, place to be when loving something too much means those who make it get punished.
"When Zhenhun and its hashtags swept the Internet, many fans as well as the producers started to worry that the drama might have been too successful and drawn unnecessary attention from government censors. The fans therefore voluntarily abandoned one of the most trending hashtags used by the drama, hashtag #Shehuizhuyi xiongdiqing 社会主义兄弟情, socialist brotherly love, to avoid being mixed up with other BL dramas and becoming implicated, and also to try not to make fun of anything “socialist.” Despite the fans’ proactive moves to “cool down the heat”, eight days after the final episode was aired, the Zhenhun series was removed from Youku on August 2, 2018, for unknown reasons. If the government does not give clear reasons for its actions, its ban on the Zhenhun series is more likely intended to regulate and restrain the fan power than to police the text, because of “the dominant culture’s need to maintain the disciplinary distance between the text and reader”. The cultural capital produced by the fans is dangerous and subversive for a government that strives to instruct its people on living “morally and positively”, and that has been increasingly emphasising the didactic message of literature and art, unwilling to recognise their function as pure entertainment."

New Year. New, old books to read!
50 Free Typesets
Tumblr media
New achievement unlocked! I now have 50 public domain books/typesets available for FREE in my library! 🥳 Above is a collage of all 50 title pages.
What does this mean? It means that these classic books have been typeset (typographic, book design, layout work done), and are ready as pdfs that can be used to read, print out, book bind, or burn at your pleasure! (Just keep it to personal use only!)
The full list (with page sizes now noted) of all 50 books available can be found here on my tumblrary directory/masterlist (which will update as I add more), and below the break of this post!
Please please feel free to request access to my library (aka, yee good ol' googly drive). I usually respond within 24 hours, and they are indeed free! Just leave credit if you use, and consider liking/reblogging!
Also, if you find any errors in the files, let me know! I made these in Affinity, not with an AI program, and typos are natural spawns XD
From Frankenstein to Pride and Prejudice, to Sherlock Holmes to a dude that wakes up as a bug, I've been honored to be able to typeset these books and share them with all of you.
A part of me wants to ramble on about the behind the scenes and my continuing personal journey of amateur typesetting...but I think the most important thing I can say is simply thank you! to everyone that's stopped by! So thank you all! (And should I try for 100? 🤔 Hmmm...)

Interesting.
Never heard the terms 'pure water' (qingshui 清水) and 'fleshy' (rou 肉). I'm gonna have to use those on AO3. Does quingshui translate to fade to black? I don't think of particular authors being labeled as such. Mostly particular works.
"Priest’s stories naturally possess the advantages that facilitate success in a culture hostile to 'abnormal' thoughts and deeds. Either because of her disposition and literary taste or commercial and ideological prudence, highly likely both, Priest has for years been well-known for writing 'pure water' (qingshui 清水) BL stories. As opposed to 'fleshy' (rou 肉) works, 'pure water' stories do not contain any graphic sexual scenes.
Moreover, Priest herself also keeps a low profile on the Internet. [...] As famous as she is, Priest voluntarily exerts minimal influence on her readers, and exists more like a popular writer 'within the system.' Her political prudence and 'right' moral preference not only bring her commercial success while garnering her millions of readers who may be sexually 'transgressive', but also allow her to walk the fine line between losing the BL essence and being censored."

The best body of water is obviously a "creek". Sometimes called a crick. A little somewhat permanent body of water that gets quite large during a gullywasher.
The next best waterway is a "pond".
What the heck is a ping anyway? It appears there are lots of regional terms for waterways.

Yep.
Menopause is a thing. When you get through it, remember to do some exercise or lift weights to keep your muscles from wasting away.
Gather around, my young friends and fellow dinosaurs, let me tell you about some BULLSHIT no one ever tells you about. I'm talking about menopause and perimenopause. Now, menopause has a very stringent medical definition. You have to not have had a period for exactly 12 months and a day to be considered in menopause. All the bullshit before that day once you start going through The Change is considered perimenopause. Here's some bullshit you might experience that people actually talk about when you're in perimenopause:
- shorter time between periods
- irregular periods
- hot flashes and/or cold flashes
- fucked up sleep
- OMG NIGHT SWEATS
- Vagina as dry as the Sahara desert
- lighter periods and/or endless bleeding like it's The Flood but it's in your pants
- lack of interest in Adult Fun Times
This time of joy can last anywhere from a couple of years to a god damn decade and there's no medical way right now to predict it.
Here's some of the REAL bullshit they don't tell you about but your dinosaur aunt is here to let you know:
- You can start perimenopause in your 30s, don't listen to idiot doctors who tell you you're "too young" because they don't know your body like you do.
- Perimenopause will make you HELLA DUMB. Seriously, I'm talking Bigly broken brain. Brain fog? Check. Short term memory? Wave goodbye to it. Ability to make words form out of thoughts? Yeah, good luck to you.
- Perimenopause can cause horrible fatigue because in addition to losing estrogen, you're also losing testosterone. Oh and that also leads to muscle wasting, cool cool.
- Things might suddenly hurt more because estrogen is known to be neuroprotective.
- If you're super lucky like I am, and like to collect rare illnesses, you might even get Burning Mouth Syndrome 💀
- And meanwhile, while you're going through this bullshit, you'll be getting gaslit by doctors who are operating based on 30 year old debunked data about how HRT causes breast cancer (not really) and that they shouldn't put you on it until you're in actual menopause. (Data shows starting HRT early can potentially prevent Alzheimer's in later years.)
- There are entire online clinics right now (I use Midi Health) focused on providing care for peri and menopausal patients and they will happily prescribe you HRT even if your regular PCP or OBGYN do not (if you meet the criteria). I've been pretty impressed with how holistically they view the patient. For full disclosure, I learned about them from my integrative health doctor and they do not accept Medicare (yet).
I'm 46 years old right now and I've been symptomatic for perimenopause for the last 8 years, although it's gotten the most dramatic in the past 2 years or so, which I hope means I'm almost done, holy hell. Yeah I was on the early side, but if it can happen to me, it can happen to you, so it's never too early to think about these things. And I hope to at least spare some of you the mind-fuckery I've been through because no one told me about most of this stuff, including my own mother who just DOESN'T REMEMBER what happened to her and now I completely understand why. And because I also have a connective tissue disease, I used to just dismiss my pain and fatigue as being caused by that illness rather than the loss of hormones.
Tumblr media
Anyways, this is why we need Elders in our lives, so they can do Grandma Story Hour like I just did and validate you when the entire medical field tries to gaslight you. I hope you've found some or all of this educational/useful. Please share with your friends because we really do NOT talk about this stuff enough. (Ewwww Moon Blood!)
Stay well, and don't let the bastards grind you down!

Just wanted to say, a lot of adults will have your back if a stalker or groomer is after you. My suggestion is to have some spaces you frequent with known communities of adults so you can ask for help if you start getting weird dms. Then you can ask other non parent adults to help you report said person to the correct authorities and shut them down when you are a bit not sure of what is going on.
Having communities of people who can tell you if the other is a perv is a useful thing for everyone, but it is essential if you are a teen or younger.
ok but legitimately i think the reason why kids aren’t taking internet safety seriously is because the people who are telling us not to put our personal information out seem so out of touch. no one acknowledges the possibility of meeting very real teenaged friends online, they always say that everyone you meet is a 40 year old white man in disguise. because they aren’t acknowledging things we know are true, it becomes a lot easier to dismiss the rest of what they’re saying as well. internet safety lessons absolutely must keep up with the times and acknowledge the internet’s capacity for good if you want kids to take to heart warnings about its capacity for bad.
