It’s gonna be a while for me to get used to the new update schedule for your story. Latest chapter was fun to read. I’m certain that John Dory will use his guitar in future chapters. I can’t wait till it gets to Band Together. I’m curious on what will happen.

Ugh, me too, I’m so impatient with my own writing. But at the same time, whew, I had no choice. With the way work and school have amped up, I’m drownin’ over here😭 But I think the once a week schedule gives me just enough time!

Hey, I just found Great Decisions, binged the whole thing, and LOVED it! I also love the burgeoning relationship between Hickory and John, HickDory being my favorite ship. One thing I'm confused on is if John has told him the full story about his brothers. If not, I'm wondering when. I can guess why he wouldn't, feeling like he would come across as just like Dickory. But Hickory strikes me as someone who would understand and see that John isn't like his brother. JD was able to successfully raise Branch and have a good relationship with him and several other trolls in his community including the Queen and former King. All points in his favor. Can't be sure, but I'm pretty confident Dickory doesn't have anyone in his life.

Good question! He has not. The closest he got was Hickory asking if he had any family, and JD answering “Not really.” It is one of his greatest shames, and you’re exactly right. Comparing himself to Dickory for sure, because the fear is, after everything Hickory’s brother did to him, and Hickory finds out what John Dory did to his own brothers, what if John Dory lost this friendship that he values so much? He is his own worst enemy, thinking in worst case scenarios, that Hickory would find out, then just leave him.

You’re also right about Hickory, however, the guy is very understanding, and likely would never do that. And of course, JD has proven time and time again (to everyone but himself) that he is a good person. But that fear is keeping John Dory from telling him, and also the idea that the good times with Hickory are only temporary. That Hickory will find out, and it’ll be over. These good times won’t last forever.

As for when he’ll tell Hickory about them… Can’t give too many spoilers. But I think telling him willingly would be a long ways off!

So glad you’re enjoying the story! Hope I can keep giving you some more sweet HickDory moments!

This might sound dumb, but do you have any tips on writing a story? I've read your fanfuc and its a really good read and it made me want to make one too since I'm not the best at drawing trolls, But I'm decent at writing.

Oh my gosh, thank you! And of course! I’ll do my best, because YES OMG YOU SHOULD TOTALLY TRY WRITING!!!

I think the most important thing about writing is actually DOING it. It’s hard, to put a thought in your head down on paper, and if you’re a perfectionist like me, sometimes if a scene or dialogue isn’t working, it can be hard to keep pushing through. But sometimes, you just gotta WRITE. Word vomit, puke on that blank paper. That’s what editing is for! Sometimes I’m in the process of writing and feeling so down on myself, thinking it’s terrible, and spending and hour trying to write one dialogue scene. But I try to just put stuff down, and most of the time, when I read it back, it all of a sudden sounds much better! You can have high expectations, but don’t let them stop you from loving what you do! (Btw, the same goes for drawing. Who cares if it’s not up to your standards? As long as you have fun doing it, that’s enough!)

Also, take breaks! Go for walks, and just think! I do my best brainstorming out walking my dog! Allow your mind to work through scenes naturally, and take notes on your phone or something if you come up with something good!

Finally, I personally like thinking of scenes like a movie in my head. Imagining the characters as how I would see them on like, a movie screen. Their subtle movements, expression, all this breathes more life into them. I think I’m a very expressive writer in that sense, in which I want the reader to be able to see what I’m seeing when I write. But that’s just me! Everyone’s got their own style, you gotta find what works for you!

…Y’all I can’t stop listening to the song “Free” from K-pop Demon Hunters, and imagining it with Great Decisions John Dory and Hickory.

Like it just fits the vibe of their relationship SO well, and it’s breaking me😭 Like Hickory singing Rumi’s lines, and John Dory with Jinu’s, like STOP IT’S PERFECT. It’s exactly the feeling I was going for with them!

HICKORY!!! I love that little goat man with all my heart! Ugh, and you captured this scene so welllllll I just want him to be happy! It’s been so fun to explore him as a character, and build his redemption arc! Also, you KNOW him and Poppy are best buddies! They’re so cute😭

I really like Hickory's "redemption" arc in the Trolls village and I really hope he stays there for a long time. Our guy deserves a good life! And I just love Hickory 😆 By the way, it was really interesting to see the song "Run It" there! I've loved it since Sonic 3 came out! So...how can I refuse to include it in my drawing(?)))

I've been wondering something. How did Doc and Mouse meet and fall for each other? I got the impression from reading the story that a lot of Country Trolls are really prejudiced. I know from looking at previous posts that kids come from immense love, so they MUST have loved each other a lot. Did they not have the same bias? I'm also putting out there that I think Hickory was carried by Mouse and Dickory was carried by Doc.

Oh for sure! Let me see if I can do this (For those confused, Doc and Mouse are the unmentioned parents of Hickory and Dickory in Great Decisions!)

…It’s ok, you can laugh at their names.

So Doc (the Yodeler side; bright orange hair and light, greenish-yellow skin, and white fur) never had any prejudice against other trolls. He just knew they didn’t like him. Most Yodelers out on the Neverglade (there aren’t many left) travel alone, and that’s what he was doing. His travels eventually led him out of the Neverglades, and towards the Troll Kingdoms, just kinda moving town to town, keeping his head down.

Enter Mouse (the Country side, with green skin, and reddish brown hair, same for her fur), who was quite a fiery young Country Troll. Despite the prejudice pushed on her, she never really believed it, choosing to make her own decisions, and form her own conclusions. Her slight temper and willingness to fight anyone who looked at her funny sent her traveling across Country Territory, not really finding anywhere where people shared her same mindset. She just happened upon Doc while he was traveling through.

That is to say, she jumped him. She thought the man was following her, and roped him. Took him almost half an hour to convince her he wasn’t😂

They found they liked each others company. A lot. She loved his easy-going attitude, his rough humor, and how strong he was. And he loved her passion, and the excitement she brought to his dreary life. And of course, her music. They balanced each other out, and loved each other dearly. They began to travel together, and Dickory came soon after. (I like your idea that Doc carried Dickory, and Mouse carried Hickory, it’s adorable!)

They traveled around just the three of them for about 4 years, then had Hickory, and they both finally wanted to settle down. The traveling life was nice, but they wanted their kids to have some stability. So until Hickory was about 8 or so, they’d stay somewhere (in Country Territory) for a few years, then move again, trying to find somewhere where people didn’t treat them so terribly. But they never really did. And as Dickory and Hickory got older, the worse the treatment became, and they were scared of what other trolls might do to them.

It was Mouse who suggested they run out to the Neverglades, away from all the prejudiced Country Trolls. They’d travelled before, this couldn’t be too different, right? Doc was a bit hesitant, but took them out there anyways, thinking he would be able to keep them safe. And they were, for a while, and they were happy. Till that avalanche hit.

After that, Doc completely shut down, turning cold, and bitter. He blamed the Trolls for forcing his family out, a sentiment he passed on to Dickory. In traveling back to the Trolls Kingdoms (too many bad memories associated with the Neverglades), Doc eventually met up with a bunch of other small, subgenre trolls, and got caught up in bounty hunting, his sons following right along with him. He eventually lost his life in a job, and while Dickory stayed with it, Hickory left, and went back to Country Territory.

This story isn’t set in stone, just kinda how I picture them in my head! It could always change if my mind comes up with new things lol. But I can also give you a few more headcanons!

- Hickory and Dickory were just allowed to roam out on the Neverglades, as long as they answered their father’s yodel when he called.

- Dickory was actually quite a good big bro, very protective of Hickory, who was like a magnet for danger. (His brother had a tendency to roam)

- Mouse taught both her bois to play the guitar, and would often braid their hair (She always wore hers in a braid)

- In my head, all Yodelers have white fur, as I based them off Mountain Goats! That’s where Hickory and Dickory get their little white socks from!

- Doc and Mouse were genuinely pretty good parents up until Mouse died. After that, it was almost too hard for Doc to look at his sons without seeing her. (He may have been ‘hitting the bottle’ quite a bit in those last years)

Ugh, anyways, good stuff! I hope it made sense, I wrote this between crazy things at work so, BLEH
