(Cosplay) Year in Review: 2018

Whew! 2018 was a crazy year. I did get the chance to try out some new cosplays and attend a couple of conventions, and spend time with friends, though! I thought it would be fun to do a quick recap of my cosplays for the year, so here we go!

Sakura-Con 2018

Sakura-Con is in Seattle, Washington, not too far from home, and it's always an exciting chance to visit good friends and my sister who lives near there.

At the convention, I cosplayed Kageyama and Shirabu from Haikyuu!!, and a Pirate AU version of Nagisa from Free! The Pirate AU Nagisa cosplay was built pretty much entirely from scratch (including the bird, which was once a sock).

Magi Photoshoot in the Park

I broke out my Alibaba (Magi) cosplay for the first time in a while last spring, too. I hadn't realized how much I'd missed cosplaying him! I worked so hard on his sword, which is carved out of wood and has real red tiger's eye stones set in it, so I always have a lot of fun swinging that around.

I was able to get a few pictures of my Kageyama cosplay outside of cons as well during a photoshoot by Jordan Nutter at a local park.

Lilac City Comicon

When Lilac City Comicon rolled around, I was pretty overloaded, so I decided to just stick with a simple cosplay that I love, which is Kageyama from Haikyuu!!. I went as casual Kageyama one day and went in uniform for the other.

Remaking Kageyama's Crown

My homemade Kageyama crown started wearing out pretty bad by summer. It was flimsy and battered and I was sure after all I'd learned that I could remake it better than ever--so I did. The new crown is still a bit fragile, but it is more flexible, easier to repair, and I'm a lot happier with how it looks. Just like the old one, it is mostly made out of paper, paint, and a tiny bit of fabric.

Kuronekocon 2018

Kuronekocon was a lot of work with two new cosplays (Adrien from Miraculous Ladybug and Panini from Chowder), but it was a lot of fun and it's always nice to meet new friends and catch up with old ones. I also cosplayed Kageyama from Haikyuu!! and did a quick evening Nagisa cosplay (from Free!) on the last evening of the convention.

Pandora Hearts Photoshoot

I had the chance to get a few pictures of my Oz cosplay (Pandora Hearts) during a photoshoot with Jordan Nutter which was exciting, too!

Cosplay Halloween Party (Rowan Witch Kageyama)

For Halloween I went to a get-together with a few friends to celebrate, and threw together a very, very quick and informal Rowan Witch Kageyama cosplay based on a Haikyuu!! AU fanfic that I've been writing.

Stardew Valley Holiday Party

Last month was also my first time cosplaying Elliott from Stardew Valley! We had a whole Stardew Valley group at the holiday party this year!

It's pretty shocking to look back and see just how many cosplays I've worked on last year! I just finished drawing Sun God Hinata from @esselley ’s “Somewhere to Belong”! A friend expressed interest in also cosplaying Sun God Hinata and asked if I would draw something for it. I am still so amazed and feel doubly blessed to know not one but two amazing people who cosplay from Esselle’s amazing fics!

I just finished drawing my cosplay plans for Kageyama from "Somewhere To Belong," @esselley's Sun God Hinata AU! I am so, so excited to cosplay Kageyama from this! This fic is very near and dear to my heart, and I reread it all the time. I know an amazing Sun God Hinata cosplayer as well, and we're hoping to meet up for photos at some point as well! (We may also try to cosplay Kagehina from "Heaven Sent" down the road, as well!)

When I heard that 70% of the National Butterfly Center is going to be mowed into the ground, I was shocked. It is a protected habitat for many endangered species, and has been community funded and privately owned for years, but the government is seizing the majority of the land due to its proximity to the US/Mexico border without due process or compensation, and will be destroying invaluable habitat for endangered species—home to over 200 species of butterflies, as well as rare plants and a wide variety of birds—for the US/Mexico wall. They have already damaged significant parts of the center by mowing down rare host plants without any warning in order to do surveys. This will be a huge blow to endangered species. It breaks my heart to think of the damage it will do. Please, if you are upset by this too, consider becoming a member of NABA (the North American Butterfly Association), the group that funds the center—or donate to the National Butterfly Center itself. You will have amazing resources available and can learn so much about butterflies and how to help them in your own garden, and the National Butterfly Center needs help more than ever. Here's my lineup for Sakura-con! I can't wait! Quick signal boost for a big project that I’ve been working hard on! I am very excited to share it with you all!

The Kickstarter for our new big project is live! We are working on an LGBT+ inclusive literary and art journal that will feature fiction, poetry, essays, photography, art, and anything in printable format from a variety of writers and artists. With discrimination still a huge problem in the publishing industry, we want to offer a platform to writers and artists of LGBT+ works who have been silenced and celebrate their amazing work. A portion of all the profits will be used to advocate for LGBT+ rights and awareness, and to donate LGBT+ books to libraries to make them more accessible. When my boyfriend and I cosplayed Kageyama and Hinata for Eucon, we thought we would give the kabedon a shot! It was a lot trickier than expected, haha.

This was my first year going to Eucon--and actually my first time visiting Eugene, Oregon--where I had a blast cosplaying the freak duo together with my boyfriend. <3 We even have the canon height difference that Kageyama and Hinata have! I had so much fun and can't wait to visit and cosplay together again!
