so they're really forcing the gravescest on us no matter what route we choose huh.
#yeah i'm still mad about this#again like if you wanna make a cannibal incest game go for it but don't make it seem like players'll have a choice to not do the incest#like. am i wrong for believing that the whole point of the questionable route and its warning was supposed to be for ppl who didn't want -#- to do a gravescest path? why give the illusion of choice when you know you're gonna force the reader to deal with it no matter what#i'm not even mad at gravescest anymore. like whatever. whatever floats your boat or whatever. who give a shit#i still think that their dynamic is too icky for me personally to be invested in them being ''happy'' together#(they also literally cannot be happy if they're together. i feel like that's the whole thing. i get some ppl like it that way but not me)#but anyway my entire point is WHY WAS THE CHOICE AND/OR WARNING ON THAT SPECIFIC PATH IF YOU'RE JUST GONNA DO IT REGARDLESS#if you're gonna make a game where choices matter then MAKE THEM ACTUALLY MATTER. don't let us choose to go a non-gravecest route and then -#- just FUCKING MAKE GRAVECEST HAPPEN ANYWAY.#either be upfront with what the game's gonna be from the get-go or DON'T MAKE IT SEEM LIKE WE HAVE A CHOICE TO NOT CONSUME THAT CONTENT

#the coffin of andy and leyley#tcoaal#i thought that the whole point of the ''questionable'' route was to allow for players to choose the gravescest angle if they wanted#like. yeah i know the themes are in the game no matter what route you take bc they're present even in the first episode#but then like. what's the point of the choice!!!!!!!!!!!!!#saimotalks.exe#if they wanted to make a horror game with incest in it then that's fine but why did they give the ILLUSION of a choice to go without it

i realized this seems like a condemnation of the depiction of taboo topics in fiction altogether so i wanted to clear it up:
opinion hasn't changed on the way the questionable route is written and the fandom's overall glorification of that dynamic, but i want to make it clear i am not condemning depictions of incest in fiction. yes incest should be written and discussed in fiction as a way to talk about it and for people to recognize incest dynamics for themselves. however, the way that the fandom basically took the dynamic and started uwu-ifying it and the way the dynamic is written specifically in the game (not to mention the way the creator treats the characters being in this relationship) only adds to this interpretation. incest and its dynamics can be written and explored, but the way this specific dynamic is written makes it easy to ignore the real consequences of promoting/cutesy-fying/normalizing the aspects of the dynamic
(yes, even when you say "they're so fucked up i love it" or other things to that degree, it's not a get-out-of-promoting-fucked-up-relationship-dynamics-free card)
unfortunately i do like the coffin of andy and leyley. however! i'm not one of those weirdos that ships andrew and ashley together, and you shouldn't be either! anyway more thoughts on my stance below the cut
i'm not a fan of the fact that the incest is there - i understand why, as another way that ashley can manipulate andrew's emotions and affections, and it's supported as an interpretation in the text. but their relationship could still be just as toxic and codependent as it is in-game without that being a canonized route. the overtones and subtext will be there regardless, and i do view it as part of andrew's character that he has a subconscious attraction to ashley, but there are other ways for their dynamic to change other than canonizing and romanticizing the romantic undertones of their relationship.
i understand that it's fictional and that it's also not the only morally reprehensible thing that the graves siblings do in the game. however, the incestuous dynamic between them only manifests on the route where they're both still alive and both coming to more of an understanding with one another. while, yes, neither route is a particularly good one for either of them, the questionable route being an offshoot of the burial route (the route where ashley continues to get everything she wants out of andrew) inherently paints the dynamic as a better solution than ashley and andrew getting their comeuppance for their crimes.
i am aware that not every story needs a moral backbone - some of the best stories have reprehensible things happen in them and their perpetrators never see retribution. however, when people outside of those stories read them, they affect reality and their perception of it. all good stories do. no matter what, fiction does affect reality and the way we interact with it, because fiction is inherently based in reality - even sci-fi, fantasy, speculative fiction.
people actively shipping and glorifying the incestuous dynamic between andrew and ashley affects the perception of incestuous dynamics in the real world for those people. ignoring the manipulative tactics that led to that route leads to more tolerance of those manipulative tactics. even when people claim that they know better, it still affects their perception, even the slightest bit. and people who aren't aware of the context seeing their incestuous relationship being glorified will assume the context makes the situation more palatable than it actually is.
ashley's been really good at manipulation thus far, it stands to reason that she could probably figure out a way to keep andrew along without resorting to incest. he's already pretty clearly devoted to her as an older brother, she could keep using their familial relationship as a means of manipulating him, or hell, eventually if andrew ends up fighting back there could be a route where she kills him and ends up using another person later, this time with romantic and/or sexual motivations. i've seen suggestions that it could even end up being julia, which would both make sense and add to the fucked up nature of ashley's motivations and manipulation.
andrew's underlying attraction to his sister could be refuted more openly and clearly. his reactions to other people noticing their dynamic could be more overtly against the idea. he could start trying to distance himself from her as a means of putting a boundary. he could be more forceful with setting up that boundary with her when she teases him about it. all of the reactions in-game lead people to assume that andrew wants this, potentially even more than ashley, and that because of that, it's okay because they're "consenting" to it.
there is no consent in this relationship - ashley has been manipulating him since they were kids, their power dynamic is uneven and leads to ashley taking advantage of his emotions, and ashley's been essentially grooming him into seeing her as the only woman in his life for years at this point. not saying andrew is without fault here, but putting myself in that position, if i had a younger sister who threatened me for a murder i was an unwilling accomplice to, all because she was jealous that i was starting to have a life of my own with people that aren't her, i would have felt similarly helpless.

Daily Danganronpa Fun Fact #1
Originally, the antagonist of SDR2 was going to be Akane. A part from this beta idea that made it into the final game were her and Hajime’s names. Hajime Hinata’s first name (はじめ) means “begin” and Akane Owari’s surname (おわり) means “end”.

Home | Next Fact
#easily one of my favorite things abt the beta ideas for sdr2#also gives me the hc that akane and hajime Rly Don't Like Each Other for no apparent reason#i just rly love the idea of akane being like ''fuck you'' and hajime being like ''???? i didn't do anything????? fuck you too though 😌''#hajime#akane#sdr2

thank god. a sane the coffin of andy and leyley enjoyer. 👏👏👏
thank you!!! i'm glad that there are at least a few people in this game's fanbase who can look at the material critically, and if i have to be that person rn then that's who i will be <3
#media literacy is knowing that the likeliest reason for the incest dynamic is because of ashley's emotional abuse and manipulation <3#and not seeing it as ''internalized misogyny'' on part of the audience but moreso on the creator's behalf if anything#like sorry i saw the same characters that the incesties did and actually looked into it through the lens of reality#the entire point of the game is that their sibling dynamic is toxic as fuck. that dynamic can still be toxic without being romantic too!#i get that the point of the game is shock value but there's a difference between:#using shock value topics to say smth abt society#and using shock value topics to make your game more ''edgy'' and ''dark'' to get clicks and views and downloads and eyes on it#asks#thank you!#anonymous

sure andrew has those underlying feelings and sure they could have potentially been there even before ashley started manipulating him (something that literally happens in the text and has been happening for years) but andrew as a character could easily ignore or deny those feelings, and ashley as a character could keep getting her way without leading their relationship down that particular route.
ashley uses her emotions and andrew's protectiveness over her to hurt him, and has done so since they were kids. andrew did not want to participate in the "prank" and ashley manipulated him to do it through emotional outbursts, coercive language, and straight up lies. she put it into andrew's head that she was jealous of nina for a perceived romantic attachment between the two, and got upset that she wasn't "the only woman" in andrew's life. that's very clearly worded to where andrew could easily get confused and believe that ashley wants their relationship to be romantic and/or sexual. we don't see him cross any boundaries or toe the line in that regard with ashley until after this point.
also, ashley pretty clearly taunts julia with the idea that andrew will eventually tire of going to HER for sex and just start doing so with ashley herself. it's clear that ashley has already planted the idea within others, and thus it stands to reason that she is working to normalize the idea to andrew.
obviously we have no idea if that's her true intent or not, or if ashley just wasn't being careful with her wording at first and decided to keep using it to manipulate andrew after he showed interest. but until we do, it's just as reasonable to assume andrew's emotions are being coerced into seeing ashley as a potential romantic/sexual partner as it is to assume that andrew would have always done so regardless of ashley's actions.
yeah maybe andrew would've always had some siscon thing but we literally don't know that because we don't see that in game -- we only see this side of andrew after ashley has started using him and manipulating him to get what she wants.
to say that andrew is just as much to blame for something he cannot control (and would probably have gone to get therapy for were he not in the situation the games present him in) as ashley who has been carefully choosing her words and manipulating andrew to get her way since they were kids is Not Great!
(also "that character wouldn't be andrew" counterpoint: andrew literally can be any character that the creator wants. he could've just as easily been a guy who isn't attracted to his sister. he could've just as easily been a brother who's been abused by his sister to the point where he has no idea of the boundaries that should be between siblings. the story could've just as easily been told without the added incestuous dynamic. "that character wouldn't be andrew" ok! then he's not andrew! honestly that's great because andrew kinda wants to bone his sister!)
unfortunately i do like the coffin of andy and leyley. however! i'm not one of those weirdos that ships andrew and ashley together, and you shouldn't be either! anyway more thoughts on my stance below the cut

#to use the text to claim that andrew's siscon is just as much to blame for their situation as ashley's words and actions is just. wh.#the same text that blatantly shows ashley using lying abusing and manipulating andrew into doing what she wants#yeah obviously we don't know yet but to me it feels obvious that ashley is the one pulling the strings here#thus it stands to reason that she could've planted the seeds in andrew's head of normalization#it's clear that even before the realization of the sus route she's seen it as an option to keep him around#(which is her ultimate goal. because he does the majority of her dirty work)#so it makes sense to me that there's a world where andrew got the idea from ashley's words and implications#i'd like to imagine andrew as a character as someone who can understand subtext#just like i'd like to imagine real world people as people who can understand subtext#but c'est la vie. i'm not gonna be able to stop you from shipping siblings but i hope i can at least make it clear where i'm coming from#the coffin of andy and leyley#tcoaal#''antis in the main tag'' yeah! i have just as much a right to talk abt the thing i ACTIVELY SAID I ENJOY as you do#i was discussing my thoughts on the thing and so i tagged the thing.
