I am very honoured to be invited to share my new work-in-progress research project as part of the 16th Annual Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival, a highly respected community orientated art festival, also in partnership with Centre A, where I did the research phase 0.3 in, makes it a meaningful return to the space. We're also going to try to centre more on Chinatown's decolonization as well as engaging the Chinese elders who still remains in this historical neighbourhood. PERFORMANCE & COMMUNITY DIALOGUE W(E)AVES 0.7 熾 (work-in-progress) Saturday November 9, 5pm - 6:30pm Sun Wah Centre, 2nd floor, 268 Keefer, Free W(e)aves is an ongoing research-creation: a solo new media performance work investigating migration, race politics, transcultural identity, queerness and spiritual philosophies.  During this research phase, Sammy Chien interweaves digital technologies, audiovisuals, text, contemporary dance, and qi gong to shine a light on dialogue centring Chinatown and its sociopolitical context in relationship to changes in Ancient Chinese pictograms. Sammy Chen, co-founder and Artistic Director of Chimerik似不像, is a first generation Taiwanese-Canadian immigrant and queer artist-of-colour; interdisciplinary artist, director, performer, researcher and mentor who works with film, sound art, new media, performance, movement and spiritual practice. I’m so proud of Nita Bowerman & Kanon Hewitt who just finished co-designing video projection as Chimerik似不像 for the 3rd development of Otosan, a story by Shizuka Kai, directed by herself with collaborator Randi Edmundson & Jess Amy Shead (Little Onion Puppet Co.) We just finished our 3 week process today, with a few private work-in-progress showings, got lots of amazing feedback. It’s really a beautiful and moving story that’s so personal and meaningful at the same time. It’s so great to see live puppetry to tell such personal story that is intercultural, ties family values as well as being kids friendly yet engaging at the same time.

I’m proud of my brother Shang-Han to represent Chimerik似不像 and take on more lead of the co-projection design role with me for Gateway Theatre’s “China Doll”. This show even features my dad’s original calligraphy instead of sampling images, it’s a very special way to bring family to work together. As this piece questions on traditional family values, we ought to think about how to move forward with change and still value traditions. Another bonus is that you get to watch theatre with subtitles, quite a fresh experience that isn’t common in North America. I’m very happy that we got to work with this wonderful team. 溫哥華國際電影節：《世明》全球首映 The World Is Bright just had it’s world premiere is at VIFF Vancouver International Film Festival, the first public life of this amazing film that I had the honour to support it in the last couple year. I bawled my eyes out again watching the first nearly 4 hours version rough cut, and at the “perfect cut” in the screening, i cried more than 8 times, I had the habit of taking notes since I was the artistic consultant for the film. Over a decade of work, a true story of a human who lived, silenced, died, who’s family continued quest to unravel the injustice law and systemic discrimination to immigrants in Canada. It will change the way you view Asian elders, POC and immigrants around you, who remains invisible to the society. It’s a universal story that shows how deep family love can be, our connections with one another, as well as rethinking about globalization (admiration of the West), internalize racism and how to build better community for mental health. Be ready to go through complex murder mystery, law system and diving into joinery of parents fighting for justice that leaves you the most beautiful heart ache. After watching this film, I felt in love with the father, it makes me want to have family. It changes the way I look at Asian elders in public. Thank you for everyone who came to F-O-R-M (Festival of Recorded Movement) 2019! It was such a wonderful turn out.
