Joey Bada$$ - Summer Knights (not so much a review as it is a general thought)
Tumblr media
In the ‘hash-tag rap’ and ‘drill’ era, invoking the names of artist’s such as Black Sheep and D.I.T.C would probably get you a weird look and a shoulder shrug. Fortunately, however, hip-hop’s product mix has been diversified, and has recaptured an essence that has largely been missing since the turn of the decade, thanks to a young fella from Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York, Joey Bada$$, who is returning with his new mixtape, the long-awaited Summer Knights.
His buzz has grown over the past couple of years, largely due to his 1999mixtape, his feature on A$AP Rocky’s posse cut from LONGLIVEA$AP, “1 Train,” and his verse on a BET Hip Hop Awards cypher in 2012. He stands out from many of today’s popular emcees, because his music feels like a mid-90s golden age renaissance.
Truthfully, his brand of hip hop can fit into any era. As he says on “Sweet Dreams,” he is ‘stuck in the 90s,’ in terms of favoring the boom-bap beats and paying great attention to detail, flow-wise. However, he and his Pro Era crew are self-proclaimed ‘ordinary people but extraordinary poets’ (from “Right on Time”). This contrasts heavily from the exaggerated lifestyles and larger-than-life personas that are so pervasive in rap music. His music is a breath of fresh air, and oh yeah, he’s a huge fan of underground legend MF DOOM.
On this new effort, he tackles the heavy issue of his friend and Pro Era cohort Capital Steez’s suicide on “#LongLiveSteelo.” This entire mixtape is a mellow, pleasant listen with solid beats and lyrical patterns beyond the kid’s years, invoking the nostaljah of vintage Nas, AZ, Smif-n-Wessun, and the Bush Babees (also Flatbush natives) Gravity album.

Joey Bada$$ returns with his follow up to 1999, Summer Knights. Its dope that he is sticking to where is heart is, musically, even of he is 'stuck in the 90s,' instead of caving in to the demands of this rap era. Grade A emcee, at such a young age too. #hiphop #SummerKnights #ProEra New Music #nowplaying #BetAwards #bonnaroo #coachella

Got Elton? The more we listen, the more we here tunes that have us saying "oh yeah.. That one" and "oh, he did that one too?" As far as discographies, start with the beginning so you can witness the growth of Elton John and writer Bernie Taupin as artists. Too often, we get caught up on singles. Don't get me wrong, the singles are outstanding, but more often than not, the songs that become your favorite are the hidden album gems that aren't played regularly. Cheers. #EltonJohn #BernieTaupin #RocketMan #Goodbyeyellowbrickroad #piano #classicrock #coachella #bonnaroo #yeezus #nowplaying #woodstock #monterey montereypopfestival #70s #music #tgif

Eric Clapton was joined by Bobby Whitlock and all-time great guitarist Duane Allman (from The Allman Brothers) to release the album under the name Derek and the Dominos - Layla and other Assorted Love Songs. Great blues-rock music. Also pictured are the Allman Brothers classic - Eat a Peach, which was released just before Duane Allman's untimely passing (24 years young), and the Cream (Clapton's band) classic - Disraeli Gears, featuring Strange Brew and Sunshine of your Love. #classicrock #clapton #allmanbrothers #woodstock #montereypopfestival #coachella #bonnaroo #cream #duaneallman #guitarheros #music #nowplaying

Surfer Blood @SurferBlood returns with #Pythons, their follow up to Astrocoast. It's not as "daytime only surf rock-y," but it's got some really good songs overall, and the majority of it is still in that surf vein. Very pleasant listen. Slightly darker lyrics. Nice guitar and bass work. Cheggitout. #indie #coachella #bonnaroo #indierock #nowplaying #newmusic #OutToday #ThisIsTheEnd #SurferBlood #Wavves #realestate #realestateband #tennis #bestcoast

Action Bronson (emcee) and Harry Fraud (producer) - Saab Stories
DAYUM. How can you not be a fan of these guys? Once I heard the opener to Fraud's mixtape, Adrift, Morey Boogie Boards featuring yes.. Action Bronson on the rhymes, I knew that another pairing between these two was inevitable. Bronson, who has released projects with one producer spanning the entire projects (Tommy Mas - Dr. Lecter, Statik Selektah - Well-Done, Party Supplies - Blue Chips and The Alchemist - Rare Chandeliers), says that this will be the last release recorded in that one-producer style.
With that said, this 7 song EP is pure GOLD for any fan of hip hop. You have 2 of the best at their respective crafts who are possibly at the height of their game. Bronson's following has been growing with every release to where he is now featured on several major albums. People are really trying to get this guy's verse on their songs. Harry Fraud might be the best 'new' producer in the game right now. He was at the helm of Curren$y's EP Cigarette Boats, which XXL Magazine hailed as "Best EP of the Year."
Again, these 7 songs don't disappoint. I was excited as hell about this release, and I am now on my 4th listen of the day. There is something very colorful, yet ethereal about Harry Fraud's beats.

Velvet Underground-"Sunday Morning" from "Velvet Underground and Nico" LP (by rutgers1961)
This is the opening song from their 1967 classic debut, The Velvet Underground and Nico, featuring that iconic banana painting by Andy Warhol. This entire album is sublime, and ushered the style that many other bands would later adopt, such as The Strokes. Perfect song for such a Sunday.

Scene with Krayzie Bone from Bone Thugs~n~Harmony. Probably my favorite rap group, growing up in the 90s. From Creepin on a Come Up, to E. 1999 Eternal, to Art of War, they held it down. Incredible flow, melody and rhythm. In an interview, Bizzy Bone called Krayzie the 'chemist' of the group. A lot of current and past rappers have these guys to thank for their style. #hiphop #rtb #rockthebells #bonethugs #rapmusic #rap #bonethugsnharmony #bizzybone #krayziebone #coachella #bonnaroo #music #hiphopdx #sceneandheard #allhiphop #hiphopradar #yeezus #thegame #kendricklamar #asaprocky
