Style testing for a watercolor comic I have in mind! This is a prototype design for Mira, a dragonfly based off of a Blue Faced Darner. I’m not 1000% set on the colors, this was mostly just to see how I feel about rendering panels like this

“Alpine Tundra is a very unique and interesting biome on Earth, categorized by harsh conditions and no trees, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t still filled with life of its own. These flowers behind me are large flowered daisies and alpine avens.”

“These are Columbines, the state flower of Colorado! And at my peds is moss campion.”

“This is Arctic sandwort,”

“These are Field Chickweed and Alpine Spring Beauty. All these plants are very well adapted to the harsh conditions they find themselves in, and provide food for native fauna like Chipmunks, Marmots, and Pikas. Perhaps even this White-Tailed Ptarmigan I was able to see from a distance!”

“Today I have learned some interesting facts about the geological aspect of Earth!”

“This particular sort of rock is called a sedimentary rock! Composed of several bits and pieces of other rocks and organic matter called sediments, all these little things get cemented into these larger rocks that cover a majority of the Earth’s surface. Interestingly enough, Teletran tells me that while the surface is mostly sedimentary, the Earth’s crust is mostly the other two major kinds of rock, igneous and metamorphic.”

“As you can see here, the grain size in this sedimentary rock isn’t entirely uniform. The size of the particulates, (or clasts, as I’m told they’re called) is what helps geologists to classify what kind of sedimentary rock they are looking at. Another way to tell is through the chemical composition, but I’d have to get Wheeljack to explain all of that! Until tomorrow my friends! I’m going to try to get down this mountain without wiping out!”

“I don’t know how humans do it without wheels…”

“I went for a walk this morning to see what I could find, but it turns out I wasn’t alone!”

“This little fellow is a Mourning Cloak caterpillar! Scientifically named Nyphalis Antiopa. He decided to see if my servo would be a good place to pupate and turn into a butterfly but I directed him to a more suitable home. Teletran tells me that this species thrives well in colder winters, and it often found in more mountainous areas, but is widely spread throughout North America and Eurasia.”

“Megatron and the decepticons have built some kind of shrink ray!”

“But not to worry. While Ratchet works on a fix I’ll be taking this opportunity to explore the wonders of Earth! There’s something everywhere you look. Even just right here!”

“According to teletran this leaf is from a tree called a Populus deltoidus, better known to the humans as a cottonwood tree. They are native all over the North American continent, and their leaves provide important food sources for all kinds of caterpillars. They reproduce through small seeds suspended in tufts of cotton like fiber which is where they get their common name.”

“Stay tuned friends, I will return with more of my findings! It is a big world to explore when you’re shrunk!”

I’ve put some of my comic work on hold to make a unicorns of North America coloring book! I’ve been wanting to make one for a while and this seemed like a good time.

This colorblind will feature 12 species of unicorns from all sorts of North American biomes, from the desert to the alpine, from the sea to the swamp! The one you’re looking at in these work in progress shots is the Swamp unicorn! Modeled after moose, manatee, and whole tail deer, these creatures are well equipped for wetland conditions and thrive in dense vegetation with lots of water.

This project is partially to practice my line work, I’ve gotten out of the habit of doing it well with all of my ceramics work, but it’s also to practice doing a kickstarter/Indiegogo campaign for when I do finish an entire comic so I don’t go into it blind.
