Yesterday we presented HappyFinder- a design concept exploring the possibility of solving conflict by being transparent with our moods. You can learn more about the concept on our website- auraborealis.me
The different design fictions and concepts presented yesterday showed a lot of creativity and design thinking. It's obvious we've learned a lot this term! And it was a lot of fun, too. Well done everyone!

Point is a smart house sitter. It listens to the sounds of your home, senses what's in the air and lets you know if anything is wrong.
We've had conversations about the invasiveness of technology and apps that listen to us constantly and invade our privacy, but this product looks at it the other way. It takes the perspective that listening all the time is more conscious of your privacy than video recording.  Point monitors your home security by listening. It is described as been less invasive than video surveillance, because instead of visually displaying everything that is happening in your home, it notifies you about the different sounds and scents that it has monitored. So instead of watching you dance around the room, it just records that music was playing. They've raised more than twice their goal on kickstarter, and are planning on shipping in July 2015.

POUR Coffee Brewer by iSkelter    |    Support on Kickstarter
Taste the difference everyday. Brew YOUR perfect cup of coffee.
POUR is a countertop appliance created to enhance the taste buds of your home and office. Within a first few tries, you will master your perfect cup of coffee and become your own barista.
The great thing about Pour Coffee Brewer is the ability to control each and every ingredient. Very easily, you can experiment with coffee to water ratios and find the exact flavor of coffee you prefer. Slowly pouring hot filtered water by hand over your coffee will result in the extraction of more flavor. Plus, the aroma produced is unparalleled.
It’s a compact, single cup brewer that conveniently takes just a couple minutes to brew your own craft coffee. The design is constructed from pure, eco friendly bamboo and paired with a hand-made, stunning ceramic drip funnel.
If you are a coffee enthusiast, enjoy craft coffee, or you simply just drink a cup of coffee every morning - then this brewing experience is made just for you.
Check more details and support the campaign on this link!

Capacitative Fingerprinting
From Disney Research Pittsburgh
I think this would be a great collaboration tool. Especially with design projects where we are brainstorming, designing, critiquing, and iterating as a group. Being able to draw out ideas and make changes while keeping track of who has done what (and only undo-ing your own contributions) would be helpful.
There is more info about it here- and while you're checking that out, take a look at some of the other things Disney research has been working on. Some of it is really cool!

BBC Future's World-Changing Ideas Summit on 21 October brought together of the world’s brightest minds together to discuss tomorrow’s challenges – from space travel to meaningful life. Here are the highlights from #wcis14.
Stand-up comedian robots, oxygen production on Mars, and the future of drones. It looks like some great thoughts and reflections on the design and the future came out of this summit. It would have been really cool to attend!
I think that the concept of this summit- discussing tomorrow's challenges- is very close to the next design assignment. Looking through these ideas has inspired me, I am ready to start brainstorming.

(In the Skin) Bear Performance by Abraham Pointcheval
This is a very unique art piece that had a few deign elements to it. This guy lived in a bear carcass for two weeks in a museum in France. He designed the bear carcass to have everything he needed in it (including a kettle for his tea). It's not the way you would usually re-use a bear carcass, not a rug or a statue, but it's an interesting way to visually represent hibernation.
You can check out the museum's page on the work here, and you can read a Huffington Post article about the work here.

Listen. You are not alone. We have a lot of work to do, but we can fix this.
This is a great multi-modal story with a great message. Watch it.

The story of a boy with autism and his best friend, Siri. Siri is patient with him, won't make fun of him, will stay on the same topic for as long as he wants, and teaches him about conversation and communication. If Siri can already do all of this for him, what would the next iteration of "digital friends" look like?

Some people are legitimately called inventors. That's a real occupation. Unfortunately, after watching shows like Shark Tank and Dragon's Den, I'm convinced ...
Some of these are actually pretty clever. They probably could have used more iteration to become safer and more useful, but not all of the ideas are bad!

Snøhetta    |    http://snohetta.com
"The Central Bank of Norway announced on October 7 two winner proposals for the design of the new banknotes. Snøhetta’s design will be the foundation for the backsides of the notes, while The Metric System’s design will be the starting point for the fronts.
When contrasts come together, as when soft meets hard or digital meets analog, a dynamic is created. Our cubical pattern first of all represents pixels; our times visual language. Secondly, it represents mosaic; surface décor put together by different materials of different colors which together create a picture. The cubical pattern constructs the coast, the horizon, and the motive; just as we humans construct our societies on the coast. We have chosen black and white photos to enhance the colors of the cubical pattern, as well as to complement the Norwegian style and tone. The pictures contrast the rational system, and have motives with both direct and indirect storytelling.
Our goal is to bring people into creating their own interpretations and associations. You will never know exactly what or how, but the design invites you into the beauty of boundaries – the transition between digital and analog, soft and hard – a dynamic that creates tension and life; just as the boundaries of our coast. ”
Snøhetta Design is a award winning, transdisciplinary brand design agency incorporated within the Snøhetta offices in Oslo and New York. Snøhetta Design clients have projects integrated with Snøhetta Architecture or without any relation to architecture. Our work, regardless of graphic design, interior, landscape or architecture, are projects where we nurture concepts.

Design Kit is IDEO.org's platform to learn human-centered design, a creative approach to solving the world's most difficult problems.
This is a great resource for design thinking. Methods for approaching all three "I"s- inspiration, ideation, and implementation.

The LegoScope is a great example of what can happen when using some of the  design process elements described in this week's reading by Tim Brown, CEO and President of IDEO. It's easy to assemble and disassemble, low-tech, and actually works. Such a great use for lego!

Science fact or science fiction?
The 'Back to the Future' hoverboard is a good example of the blur in the line between fact and fiction in science. I don't think this is the first time there has been a rumor about a real hoverboard like the one in 'Back to the Future', but once again it was proven to be a hoax. Maybe the next time this rumor is resurfaced the hoverboard will be real?
