How would you fix The Sith Resurgence?
oh, boy.
For those of you unaware, “The Sith Resurgence” is a fairly obscure work of fiction, written by YouTuber and media critic Lily Orchard. She is wildly controversial, with a long smorgasbord of allegations, from grooming to abuse, and might genuinely be a sexual predator. so that’s already a major strike against the work.
unfortunately, we don’t really have the time and space to delve into the allegations here. I’ll be focusing, mostly on the fic itself, but I’m happy to elaborate on the woman herself in DM‘s or other posts.
Resurgence itself is mediocre at best, and outright self-indulgent wankery at its worst. But the premise— oh, the premise is worth talking about.
you see, what if Rey was never left on Jakku as a child? What if she was rescued from slavery by the kindness of a stranger— not a Jedi, but by a Dark Lord of the Sith?
I’ll be delving in to this idea over the next set of posts as I collect and organize my thoughts.

[Lily's Post]
Tumblr media
LILY THAT'S YOOOOOU ☝️
Tumblr media
Oh I believe the accusations. The more I've listened to you talk, the more I've talked to your sister and some of your (alleged) victims the more it just solidifies to me that you are a sniveling little snake who has been a piece of shit pretty much since you were a kid.
Tumblr media
I hate that I understand how you think now, that I've become able to follow your deranged fevered leaps in logic to their source. And it always, always, comes back to your sociopathic malignant narcissism. This goes far beyond your braindead opinions on children's cartoons.
I demonstrated alot of restraint when I first started reacting to Lily. I just wanted to tear down some hilariously bad cartoon opinions that, at the time, seemed so absurdly bizarre and nonsensical.
But now I've come to realize her vendetta against Steven Universe comes back to her infuriation that her ex Lizzy, whose surname she took and kept, escaped her. It always comes back to Lily, her bullshit, and the people she's hurt. And it's exhausting.
And yeah Lily tough shit. You called an openly bisexual man, and only an openly bisexual man, a "jizzrag". I've never seen you use that particular insult anywhere else with anyone else. So no shit people are gonna notice it's targeted. You're just a moron who isn't nearly as slick as you think you are.

I…
I’m sorry, I can’t be comfortable with this. No one, regardless of status or actions, deserves to be reduced to LESS than human.
I thought you were better than this, Lily…. This is just really fucked up to say…
"Waah waah she called her stalkers 'it'"
If you spend your entire life harassing, stalking and lying about people, you deserve to be dehumanized. You aren't a person, you're a parasite.

I've seen this weird take in some places that "comphet is biphobic" and maybe I'm just old but it seems like all this stupid LGBT discourse is getting even stupider
Read between the lines of discourse and you'll find the real thing people are upset about.
Not to say discourse hasn't always been rancid, but one of the reasons discourse was always so bad is "poor reading comprehension + main character syndrome = shouting matches." So when people are discussing their own lived experiences on a place like Twitter, an uninvolved third party will hear it, feel attacked, and start screaming.
This is only worse as younger millenials and Gen Z are even worse reading comprehension and even worse main character syndrome.
So when you have a young bisexual person with the social graces of a brain damaged rhino in a Nine inch Nails sweater, hearing other people discuss comphet and how it affected them and their process of self-discovery will make them hear "You aren't actually bi, you just like guys because of comphet."
Which would be easily dismissed if they stopped and used evidence based reasoning, but again: Idiots with Main Character Syndrome, so everything has to be about and relate back to them in some way. Hence why they lash out and get angry.
So it's better to not engage with someone who says this outside of saying "Conversations about comphet aren't about you, mind your own business."
"Mind your own business" is something shortform social media kiddies needs to hear in general, honestly.

I'm curious why you always seem to write stories about very intense love, and characters being completely devoted to someone? It's been a recurring trend in your work.
Every writer has their niche. Look at a single author long enough and you'll find common themes and elements in their work.
It's why I always found it odd when I get questions like "Will you ever write [genre/character type I never showed any interest in]." Go find an author who likes doing those things.
Media diversity isn't about every creator writing everything. It's about a lot of different creators making what they love.

What do you think about the live action remake changing Aang's leaving the temple to escape being the Avatar to him just trying to clear his head? Seems like they're just removing his flaws
It's understandable given "The Discourse." A lot of Avatar fans don't like it when Aang is shown to do bad things, because he has all the character traits we associate with "Good and Kind and Heroic" so when he does bad things people go "BWAH?!"
There's a reason the most hated episode is the one where Aang lies about history to stop two tribes from killing each other. People hate it when Aang actually behaves like an airbender in ways that aren't just supreme goodliness.
The thing about Aang is that the things that inform his positive attributes also inform his negative attributes. But because his positive attributes are pacifism, optimism and kindness, people don't like it when those things inform his bad decisions because those are "Good People" things.
People often say they like morally grey characters, but that's only true when the "grey" part comes from things we associate with "Bad People" things, like ambition or greed or vanity. Things that a character is expected to remove from themselves and move into exclusively Good People Things.
When a character's negative qualities, like Aang fleeing his responsibilities, are informed by the things that inform their positive qualities, like his Air Nomad culture, people get VERY cranky.
So given that the discourse of "Aang is the goodest good person to ever good" I can see why the live action writers scrubbed away Aang's faults.

How does Niva relate to the Avatar State? In ATLA, Aang couldn't control it until the very end, and in Korra it was nerfed. How does it work with Niva?
The Avatar State works for ATLA, because for story reasons Aang doesn't get control of it until exactly the point in the story he needs to. The problem Korra has is that the Avatar State is basically just "going Super Saiyan" and that's all it is. Which is why in Korra it takes such a nerf.
The solution, obviously, is change the Avatar State so that every Avatar has a different relationship with it, and it reflects on the plot in different ways.
ATLA already gives us an angle for this. Before Season 3, most of the times Aang goes into the Avatar State is out of rage and vengeance. Finding out about the genocide, thinking Katara has been killed, and finding the one who stole Appa. In all three instances, he becomes a terrifying whirlwind of destruction.
So we already know what to do with it.
Niva never goes into the Avatar State willingly. Her thought chakra is never opened because of her attachment to her sister. She never gets control of it. She only goes into it when she's extremely scared, or extremely angry.
So when writing anything for Niva, I have a rule: Niva going into the Avatar state is BAD.
Whenever she goes into the Avatar State as a child, it usually results in Lavi being seriously injured. As an adult, that theme continues. If she goes into the Avatar State, someone is going to either be grievously injured or die. Case in point being when the Red Lotus critically injures Lavi, Niva goes into the Avatar State and brutally wipes them out in her rage.
The way I see it, is that the Avatar State combines the wisdom and power of all previous Avatars. But Niva doesn't have the previous Avatars because of Harmonic Convergence. So when she goes into the Avatar State, it's all this cosmic power... but it's still just Niva. And all her virtues and vices. Niva going into the Avatar State is a reflection of Niva as a small child: Scared, cowardly, possessive of her sister, afraid of and even disliking other people.
Nive does not like being the Avatar. And she never grows to like being the Avatar. Being the Avatar is something she only ever does begrudgingly. Even when she ends up being a pretty good Avatar in the end, she never truly embraces it like Korra did.
So Niva in the Avatar State is her regressing to a point of "I literally only care about one human being on this miserable fucking planet, and the rest mean nothing to me" that her entire character is about moving past. A reflection of her more primal instincts that the Avatar State is built around before its properly mastered.
This means the Avatar State isn't a cool power to use. It involves Niva embracing the worst version of herself, using this power for her own personal desires. So Niva controlling her impulses, her extremely strong and chaotic emotions, and by extension NOT going into the Avatar State is the point of growth for her.
This is probably the best fit for Niva. There isn't really a place for the Avatar State in Niva's environment of low-middle stakes stories. So making it something you actively don't want her to use would be the best use for it.
