Okay, I know I'm still a novice wizard, but I have to say something, robes are kind of dumb. They can look gorgeous, yes, but they're so inconvenient, they're so easy to trip in when you're wearing them, and god forbid you try to run or dodge in them. I can't even wield a sword in one, unless it's small enough to not have me trip in or lose my grip on my weapon. I don't care if you're a master of the arcane arts, if you need to haul ass and you're stuck in an antimagic field, you can't do shit. Overall, robes are generally an inconvenience in my eyes and I'll be the one laughing when the rest of the students trip on their oversized robes the next time we get raided, while I continue to train for melee combat and have actual mobility.

I made a wearable mockup of an 18th century wrapper, so I could have something to wear over my swimsuit on the very rare occasions I go swimming, and I'm glad I did because it's too narrow and I will have to cut it bigger when I eventually make a wrapper out of nice fabric.
The very cheap, coarse, unbleached cotton I used reminded me of some of the flags in episode 1 of Our Flag Means Death, so I added a cat appliqué to the back.
I couldn't bear to do it anywhere near as messily as the one in the show, and I ended up looking at a lot of cat reference photos to draw my cat outline. I sewed on a bunch of odd black cotton scraps with my free motion foot, and then trimmed the edges down very close. The tongue is a thinner piece of red cotton, and I turned the edges in and hand sewed it down.

Is there a reason most wizards wear robes, or is it just to look cool?
Robes conceal large parts of your body. You could hide an orb or a wand in there quite easily. Some can even hide a staff.
And while it is fashionable, it’s main purpose is utility. There are so many pockets. The reason there’s a lot more witches than wizards is because of the acceptable clothing and amount of pockets. Not many other professions have clothing with pockets for women, nor do many of their regular clothes. So, pockets are why there are more witches than wizards.
Robes are often made of silk or special fabric that is really easy to enchant.
Ultimately, they’ll worn for security and the ability to conceal practically anything in them.

Robes ladies, robes! A robe before a match will just make it 100% hotter. Don't ask me how, I don't make the rules.
