I just finished Saints Row: The Third Remastered, a graphical update to a game I liked a whole lot back when it was new. It’s the same damn game, it just looks (mostly) prettier. I have 100%’d the open world, and did both endings in the main story, all on “hardcore” difficulty. I also finished the GenkiBowl VII and Gangstas in Space DLCs, but the Trouble with Clones DLC feels glitched and near-unbeatable at the moment, so I decided not to waste my time with it since the rest of the game is already a tremendous value.
Short review time:
Goods: If you liked SR3, all the good stuff is still there. The new graphics… at worst they look like nothing has changed, at best, the new lighting is amazing. It’s still the same damn game.
Mehs: If you were iffy on SR3, all the meh stuff is still there. It still has the same glitches and problems, though some are fixible (I had to limit FPS to 60 with Nvidia Control Panel to get vehicle sound effects to play properly). It’s still the same damn game.
Bads: If you hated SR3, all the shitty stuff is still there. Character redesigns… your mileage may vary but the combination of super-duper realistic skin textures and cartoony exaggerated character models can look pretty weird. Some parts of the game feel less balanced than the original. Also, there is no way to import your character from the original, you have to either recreate your character by hand or start over from scratch (I chose the latter). Other than that, it’s the same damn game.
I got the game very cheap on GOG (14 US dollars) and at that price it was definitely worth it, since I got the original on a huge sale back in 2012 to begin with. Whether this game will be worth it or not to you depends on how much you liked the original SR3 and whether or not you care that much about the remastered graphics. Because overall… it’s still the same damn game. For me, since I loved the original and enough time has passed since I played it, and I liked what I saw in Digital Foundry’s breakdown of the remastered graphics, it was worth it.
