it’s endearing to me that we think of Peeta as wanting to be a father not because he ever even suggests it (he doesn’t, not before the epilogue) but because Katniss is the narrator and she clearly wants him to be one

Obsessed with how the first half of MJ has Katniss in the opposite position as first book where now she has her Prim and her mom and Gale and she’s not in a death match, but it’s tonally so much more depressing. And the singular reason for that is that Peeta isn’t there.
The whole first book had moments of her laughing and smiling and even joking during a death match and 90% of that was because Peeta was being a goofy idiot with her.

I'll never get over the fact that when Gale asked Katniss where they would be if Peeta had been a jerk and died in the Games she's all 🙄 "we'd be hunting."
But then Peeta drops the baby bomb and Katniss is like "if I hadn't denied myself of ever wanting children, this would be real and I'd be pregnant with Peeta's child right now."
!!! GIRL !!! Those are two VERY different outcomes!

I think a lot of the reason that people struggled to understand Katniss’s feelings for Peeta is that in a series whose central plot is focused on survival that has a protagonist whose main focus is survival it’s easy to chalk up the grand gestures of becoming the Mockingjay and giving up her life for him at the Quell as her being romantic. But because she’s also a very compassionate character it’s easy to say she would do the same for Prim, Gale, or Haymitch so what makes Peeta so special.
However thematically the series focuses a lot on the dichotomy of living and surviving. Multiple times it’s mentioned how there are worse things than death for a person. That just surviving isn’t always the point. And that’s the key to showing how Katniss put Peeta at a different level than everyone else through the books. Slowly she let herself be more and more vulnerable with him in a way nobody else got.
- she admits that sleeping with him is a luxury because he makes her feel safe for the first time since her father died
- the girl who mentions not being used to being touched puts Peeta as the only person outside of her family who she’s comfortable with touching her. And it’s not even resignation, he’s the only person whose touch we see her craving multiple times when she wants to sleep with him or have his arms around her.
- the few times Katniss is shown to be happily relaxing is with Peeta when they have their picnic before the Quell and when they work on the plant book.
- the ultimate admission of vulnerability by telling Peeta she needs him on the beach.
- opening herself up to sexual attraction by enjoying those hungry kisses with him. To the point she’s looking forward to more of them when she thinks they’re going to have a happy reunion.
- being dependent on him enough to be broken when he’s taken to the Capitol. And then to be suicidal when an alive Peeta comes back who she can’t enjoy their previously warm relationship with.
- “I don’t know why his voice reaches me when no one else’s can”. Do you know how much trust you need to have for a person for them to influence you this much?
- and above all Katniss’s most romantic gesture is choosing to live for Peeta. When she’s shipped back to D12 she mentions how there is nobody stopping her from killing herself but something is stopping her. And then after Peeta returns she showers, goes hunting, calls her mom. She actively chooses to try and heal and recover.
That’s the true signs of love Katniss Everdeen shows Peeta Mellark, she chooses him above everyone else to be the one person who she lets herself be vulnerable with to the point that it affects how she chooses to live beyond surviving

I don't think we talk enough about how unhinged this entire 15-20 page stretch of catching fire is:
Katniss says she'll be damaged beyond repair if Peeta dies
Katniss tells Peeta she needs him
They share a long intense kiss that makes Katniss feel sexual desire for him
Peeta says she's going to be a great mother and Katniss, unprompted, internally states that she'll never have Gale's child (lmao)
Katniss thinks Peeta should be a father because of who he is as a person
Katniss falls asleep fantasizing about a future where Peeta's child is safe in a meadow
Katniss wakes up feeling happy due to Peeta, likely because she dreamed about him
Peeta gives Katniss the pearl
Katniss tells Peeta the locket worked because it made her more sure of her love for him and her decision to die for him
And then nothing happens after that because the book suddenly ends right there haha so weird

The post-feast cave kiss will never not be funny to me. Like I get that there's nuance and trauma and confusion and that Katniss is struggling to understand her feelings for Peeta, but also... She literally says that's the first time they're able to kiss without one of them in some altered state of consciousness or actively dying. And it just HAPPENS to be THAT kiss that makes her want more? Homegirl let me get this straight: the FIRST time you're able to kiss like normal, physically healthy people, you think "oh this is NICE. I'll have more of this please". Idk Katniss, I'm no expert on attraction but I think you might be into him if your reaction to your first real, uninhibited kiss is "ANOTHER!!!!"

No but the Hunger Games really said "what do you hate more- the atrocities or the people who commit them against you? Because like it or not there IS a difference. If you hate the people who commit acts of pure evil more than you hate the acts themselves, what will stop you from becoming just like your enemies in your pursuit of justice? What will keep you from commiting those very same acts against THEM when the opportunity arises? And what then? The cycle of pain and suffering will never stop. Round and round it'll go. Nothing will ever change. But. BUT. If you hate the atrocities. If you hate the vile, senseless acts MORE than you hate the people who did them to you. If you are able to see that evil is evil regardless of who does it... The cycle ends with you. No, you may never get justice. But you will never be responsible for making others, even your enemies, suffer the same crimes you have. The atrocities will never be committed by you, never by your hand. And that's the way you change the world. It's the ONLY way" and that's why I am sure it will never stop being one of the most relevant works of fiction ever created

Thinking about how Katniss's relationship with her mother gets better as her romance with Peeta progresses. How she is basically saying "I know what it is to love now. I understand the pain you went through when Dad died. I'm sorry"

just thinking about how Katniss associates dandelions with rebirth and hope and the feelings of things being good again when most people today view dandelions as intrusive and invasive weeds. something to be tamed. thinking about how Katniss initially felt like Peeta was her metaphorical weed - intruding on her life at home, her feelings for him needing to be tamed. but in the end, like a dandelion blooming in spring, her feelings for him were also inevitable.
