alright man. ill go on to say that the jekyll and hyde musical is a bad adaptation and has some questionable musical moments.

but GODDAMNIT. if theres anything this musical accomplishes, its setting the mood. when im trying to write my jekyll and hyde story??? its the first thing i listen to. maybe the ONLY thing i listen to. it gets me in the mood and ive js gotta admit it.

so at least this musicals worth it for something 😭

ok so i MAY be getting ahead of myself butttt…

i came up with a structure for my chapter covers. basically theres gonna be some sort of border around the chapter cover, and depending on what characters are important in that exact chapter, theres gonna be like symbols representing those characters on the border. (like, a beaker for jekyll or a magnifying glass for utterson.) it’d be like a pattern that could be a cool little detail!!! cuz yah!!!!!

the spreadsheets getting a bit too serious. things are getting a little too real gang. im actually gonna have to write and illustrate all of this. im actually doing this. ive never actually completed a project before. what is happening.

god okay hi guys. i just realized that nothings gonna get done for my moralist caged if i js keep editing the first 6 chapters or so, so i js sat down and wrote out the complete plot (the draft of it). it isnt perfect, and it needs editing, but i js feel so great about it now. cuz like, wow, wdym youll feel accomplished and get more done if you just sit down and let yourself write without critiquing every little detail?? my little perfectionist brain still needs to get used to that. but yeah, i js wrote out the complete beginning, middle and end, meaning i like 99.999% know how this story is gonna end. so thats exciting and also terrifying.

sorry guys, random rant, but in what world. was its a dangerous game necessary in jekyll and hyde.

now to start this off, i LOVE this song. the lyrics (for this musical’s standards) flow nicely, the harmonies are lovely, the overall sound of the song is amazing and i loved listening to it when i first heard the soundtrack. great song. but the thing is, this song is NOT framed to be what it is in the musical (in my opinion). hearing that song for the first time with no context made me imagine something very different. obviously still about sex, but i imagined it to be more… consensual than it is? not that i dont expect hyde not to assault women, especially in the musical, but the lyrics feel… sorta misleading? i can definitely SEE what they were going for, but most of the lyrics imply that both lucy and hyde are making a decision to be in this relationship theyre in. so that, when actually seeing Hasslehoffs version of the musical (which is already NOT a good version of the musical) threw me way off.

but not only that, this song is completely unnecessary using it to show hydes abuse towards lucy. i think actually that earlier in the show we had a much better scene, one of the best in the show, where Lucy comes to Jekyll with injuries she tells us she got from Hyde. That, in a subtle and well written way, lets us know not only their relationship; but just how Hyde behaves. and so having its a dangerous game later on in the show feels not only unnecessary but in AWFUL taste. if this song were more about how theyre both taking a risk and choosing to partake in their affairs, it would add more nuance and genuine depth to their relationship. instead, it just reinforces what we already knows about them; just does it more explicitly. Scenes like these in stories CAN be useful and meaningful, but all that scene does is reinstate something that didn’t need to be reinstated the way it was. completely unnecessary.
