this is how I see their current relationship dynamic

You can't always find forgiveness in yourself but you CAN find it with friends and family and that is so healing.

Going from “bob is looking at their memories and is going to use them against each character later” to “omg bob saw those memories and realised he’s not alone at all and there are other people in the world who he could actually relate to” was wild coz I didn’t expect it until I was already crying.

Exploration of Shame in Thunderbolts*

Something I really appreciate about this film is the exploration of not just depression, but shame. This idea that our pasts haunts us, and rumination leads to the isolation and deterioration of our relationships with ourselves and others is so fresh and important today. The other characters referring to the void as "shame rooms" and each room being a snapshot of their most regretful moments gives insight not only to the characters, but to ourselves. Here is my analysis.

What keeps you up at night? What moment do you so wish you could go back and change? For Yelena, attempting to save Anya from the fate that already took her just leads to more pain as Anya tells her its too late. John already lost his wife and son due to his inability to move on from his mistakes. Valentina cannot bring back her father, or untell her family secrets. Shame and regret is isolating, humiliating, and, most importantly, not a productive vehicle of change.

Our characters are stuck in a cycle of self-hatred and isolation as they try to reconcile with their pasts without "doing the work", as Sam Wilson described to Bucky on the same topic in TFATWS. Revenge and isolation will not distract or heal you like friendship, acceptance, or true reconciliation. This is part of the reason I believe they choose to not focus on Bucky, because he has already fought this battle.

Things comes to a head at two key points during the third act: Yelena and Alexei's conversation, and the climax of the film where Bob is forced to accept the mistakes he made post-procedure as Sentry. When Yelena confronts her shame, expressing feelings of purposelessness, loss, and regret, Alexei says something so important.

"You're stuck, you're alone, you look only at the bad. When I look at you, I don't see your mistakes. That's why we need each other."

Similarly, the shame room wants Bob to feel like he is alone and "always making things worse", helpless. It forces him to fight alone and silences his friends. He is only able to defeat the void when Yelena and the team tell him "I'm Here" and share his pain with him. And this is the answer to the question the beginning of the film poses, "how do I escape these feelings within myself?" You must seek community.

What I appreciate so much about this film is that look into the extremely normal experience of becoming lost in your own regrets. Being unable to see yourself positively is a horrible (but common) experience, and so fresh to see in an action franchise. We cannot change our pasts or fix our mistakes, but we can talk to one another. Make community. Share experiences and lean on each other to do better in the future. We can see the light in each other that we may not be able to see ourselves.

Thunderbolts End Credits Musings

My thing about the end credits scene is that if its 14 MONTHS later there is NO WAYYYY sam and bucky hadn't discussed what was going on multiple times for that entire year. Like actually no way, ship or no ship.

I'm so curious about wtf they would have discussed a day, a week, a month after the events of the movie. The legal battle happening a year later is so odd given the timeline and the assumed status of their relationship post bnw (good, close, regular communication).

Realistically, I think they would have had discussions on what's going on well before the 14 month mark, and I wonder how the events of the film would impact their relationship. Is it divorce era? Is it just a silly throw away moment that will maybe be addressed as a trademark joke in the next film? Will we be forced to watch a rehash of civil war for no good reason? Only time will tell
