“because he loves Peeta too” is the only line ever because it tells us, with the plainest read of the text, that Haymitch loves Peeta just as Katniss loves Peeta; so Katniss admits she loves Peeta here; and, read another way, I think it also tells us that Haymitch loves Katniss, and he loves Peeta too

and Katniss knows they are loved by Haymitch (she articulates it more later, but the fact that she reaches for his comfort also speaks volumes), which is just … a whole thing …

and he’s there for his sweetheart, immediately, and they’re united in their grief over Peeta, even as everyone else is fretting about how they’ve lost their propaganda piece

he didn’t want to let them in and this is why — and he does know what she’s feeling, more than she can handle hearing right now, not only because of his past, but because he too is watching Peeta’s decline, and Katniss’s decline because of it … so he just tells her he knows, and he holds her

This really made me think Prim was practically living in the world of Final Destination. Death kept coming for her after she narrowly escaped it until, in the end, it finally caught up to her.

the thing about the hunger games is prim was always meant to die. She should’ve starved to death, but Katniss intervened. She should’ve been killed in the arena, but Katniss intervened. She should’ve died in the district 12 bombing, but Gale intervened. She should’ve died in the district 13 bombing, but Gale intervened. Then the circle closes when Katniss is too slow, too helpless to do anything against the bombs in the Capitol. Prim dies like she was always meant to. There's nothing Katniss can do.

Katniss canonically spends more time thinking about Peeta’s kids than Peeta.

I think Katniss plays down her own beauty.

She tells us she takes after her father and Prim takes after their mother (who was once quite beautiful).

You can’t convince me Katniss isn’t the pretty version of her dad. She has the seam look but she absolutely inherited her mother's beauty.

During his interview in THG Peeta says something along the lines of "a lot of guys at school like her" and that could have been a lie but it also might not be. Katniss wouldn't know but Peeta whose been in the boy's locker room would know.

She often attributes looking beautiful to Cinna and her prep team but they’re stylists not wizards.

Imagine the pure chaos of being a classmate of Katniss and Peeta’s and then watching them in the games. Delly mentions Katniss was admired and Peeta is said to be popular. So now these nice kids you’ve known for years took two days in each other’s close proximity to act weird.

The reserved girl who doesn’t even smile in town with either of her friends is laughing and kissing the boy. The charming guy is making fun of her scowl and saying he doesn’t mind if she sees him naked. He also airs out some of his family’s dirty laundry. They make a suicide pact. The girl has always tried for a stoic face but now she’s cried hysterically over the boy. They’re volunteering to die for each other. They’ve kissed for at least ten minutes on national television twice.

I’m sure the games have caused tributes to act different from their district impressions but I’m not sure if they ever revealed two people to be so weirdly intense about each other.

for some reason, i'm thinking about an alternate version of events where haymitch figures out the gumdrops are poisoned before it's too late, and then spends the rest of his life taking the first bite of everything lenore dove eats. just to make sure. and of course he's paranoid.

it would be such a delicious parallel to snow. the man willing to poison himself to kill others vs. the man who's willing to poison himself to save someone he loves.

and then it's an even more powerful image, in a way, because katniss and peeta did it with the berries, too.

lenore dove resenting maysilee for keeping a canary in a cage, only for the capitol to literally lock haymitch in a gilded cage after his games. he is truly a canary in a coal mine, trying to warn the districts about what really happened to him.

call it unrealistic all you want but Coriolanus, Haymitch and Katniss never getting over the first person they fell in love with is so funny to me like they met exactly one (1) sassy, free-spirited, artistic diva and that was it for the rest of time

I wonder if the weak point on the shield in the training session was on purpose for Beetee, Wiress and Katniss to see. So they would detect the weak point in the arena more easy. Something that maybe Plutarch did on purpose for them to see It.

rereading the entire hunger games trilogy and just reached the part where Peeta and Katniss watch Haymitch's games and idk if this has already been talked about but the exact lines are

"We watch from the point of view of one of the tributes as she rises up through the tube from the launch room to the arena."

first person pov. of a female tribute. someone capitol had put a camera on. as in, someone who has been bugged by the capitol.
