It wasn't really his fault. He swears.

It was just. The race had been exciting, competitive, cutthroat. Daniel and Carlos switched places from the first lap to the last, but it was Carlos that came out on top of it.

And not for luck, no. There was little luck in this sport. It was because, in some perfectly calculated, perfectly structured and timed way, Charles made the call. And Carlos stole their win with one of the best overcuts Max had ever seen since joining the sport.

So it wasn't his fault he was reading again and again all the data he could get his hands on. And all the radio transcripts of the race between Carlos and Charles. And rewatching the onboards.

"He's so hot." He couldn't help but say, groaning. The papers were sticking to his face where he was laying, face first, on Lando's hotel bed.

"Are those Ferrari data papers?" Lando spoke, his mouth full and eyebrows so raised they looked funny.

Max groaned again.

Daniel started to laugh in the middle of them. His honking laugh was as comforting as perfectly mocking.

"Can't you just suck his cock like a normal person?"

Daniel kept laughing, his face was getting red.

"Stop. You're killing Daniel."

Lando sighed, punching Daniel.

"Ouch, what was that for?!"

"Stop laughing and help me!"

Daniel uffed and turned Max face up, pinching his cheeks and trying to dodge his hands.

"Come on, Maxy, what are you afraid of?"

Max landed a kick to his shoulder, and was freed from his grip. "He barely tolerates me."

Lando facepalmed, "You can't be fucking serious, oh my god."

"Do you really-" Daniel tried to not laugh again, "Like, are you blind?" he waved in front of Max's face, receiving another kick. "There's so much sexual tension you're making the whole paddock your third wheel."

"There isn't. And we are collegues anyway, it woudn't work."

Lando took some of the papers in his hands, looking at them. "You're pathetic, do you know this?"

Max clicks his tongue. "I am, indeed, aware of this."

"Do you plan on doing anything about it?"

"Nooope."

"Nice work."

Daniel started to laugh again.

Academic rivals anon here again. I absolutely love this idea and I wish I could write this but I don’t have the brain capacity to actually write 50k words right now (I say whilst ignoring my own wips) so I hope you don’t mind me sporadically dumping ideas 🫣 can we take a minute and imagine the first time either of them get go up with their driver on the podium. I think it would be absolutely beautiful. And the other secretly watching the podium. Max immediately spots Charles’ bright red jacket in a sea of navy. Or how secretly proud max would be when looks up and sees Charles standing there with the trophy and the brightest smile. And no max was not late to his own debrief because he couldn’t compose himself.

I need Max to be Daniel's race engineer and Charles to be Carlos'. Imagine the chaos. The drama.

Those four winning so much that it's as annoying as it's hilarious.

Daniel and Carlos being their funny selves off track meanwhile Max and Charles look constantly ready to throw hands (or fuck each other) right by their sides.

“Somebody needs to lock those two lunatics up together and I don't care if it's in a boxing cage or a hotel room.”

I think with both of them as engineers we need a bit of history. They are so academic rivals coded. Maybe Charles is the one that basically lives on the library, always with his notebooks. But max just is a bit effortless with his work. Maybe they both applied to intern under newey and obviously max got it and Charles is still bitter about it even though he got his placement with Ferrari even before he graduated.

What I didn't know was who I had to defeat to get that opportunity — him.”
