Looking back at the Pottermore information on Ravenclaw’s, it says something like just the door giving riddles has kept everyone except Ravenclaw’s out for thousands of years but like???? How??? I’m sure plenty of Gryffindors, Hufflepuffs, and Slytherins know riddles and how to solve them. Especially the muggleborns, who have probably heard the riddles a million times in those Youtube videos going “Only 5 PERCENT can get these RIGHT”. It just doesn't make any sense???

Hey remember that one character in Harry Potter who came from an abusive family, who told him lies about his life and the world because they wanted to brainwash him so he would be put on the “right path”? And then was shoved into his “destiny” much too young and made to fight for a cause he knew very little about, and even forced to kill someone who had wronged his family even though he was still just a boy? Remember the trials he had to go through, and even though his friends were sometimes with him, he was pretty much alone? Remember how everyone hated him for a while and he felt like he was all alone in the world? Remember how he learned his father was not all that he seemed to be, but decided to love him anyway? Remember the teacher he looked to for guidance treating him like he didn’t need to know anything? Remember his mother who was willing to sacrifice everything, even die, just to protect him? Remember in the 7th book, the choice he made, blindly and willingly, because he wanted to protect his friends and family?

Now tell me, am I talking about Harry or Draco?

Hello! I'm a fellow Ravenclaw, and I was wondering. Do you happen to believe in breaking the steriotypes of our house, and do you believe that Ravenclaws often get bad grades, are more creative than witty, often procrastinate and hate studying?

I am so sorry I am only just seeing this now! Sorry for not responding sooner. But now that it’s 1 am and I am itching to write paragraphs I’ll answer this now isdufgbi.

So of course the stereotypes surrounding Ravenclaw don’t apply to everyone since we can’t all be neatly sorted into houses, but I think a lot of the things people say are accurate, at least the ones I've seen which are probably Ravenclaws working to break stereotypes set by other houses.

Ravenclaws are probably much more motivated to research something that actually fascinates them rather than something they are specifically told to do, so instead of doing like math homework, they procrastinate by reading pages and pages of analysis on their favorite TV show or something like that (and this is speaking from personal experience as well. I cannot tell you how many times I read Zodiac threads instead of doing Biology homework).

I also feel like there are two types of Ravenclaws - the ones who need to work hard to get good grades and those who seem to have it come to them naturally, ya know, those people who don’t have to study for tests vs the people who spent all night just making the flashcards with the info. And I don’t mean to say that those who don’t need to study are lazy or anything, it’s just some take in information more naturally or easier than others, so they’re all set after just listening to a lecture in class. So those who have to work for their grades but decide not to probably get bad grades, while other Ravenclaws probably get as good grades as any other house. I could be wrong though because like I said, Ravenclaws would probably rather daydream about a novel they could write or start doodling a scene in their head than listen in class or do their work.

I keep going back to the point that most Ravenclaws are probably more invested in learning about something that actual interests them but it’s literally my favorite thing about Ravenclaws and the biggest reason why a lot of stereotypes are broken. Ravenclaws are probably a lot more creative, because they want to write about this really cool idea they just had or play around with this neat color palette they just saw rather than solve riddles or do Intellectual Things™ like other houses think we do. Like, yeah we could get back in our dorm, or we could stay up all night outside the door jotting down random lyrics that pop in our head.

And of course we shouldn't let people hold us to the stereotype that all Ravenclaws are bookworms and super smart because that’s simply not true, not for all of us at least. I think the thing about Ravenclaw’s is that we want to accomplish our goals, but we want to accomplish our own goals in our way, which probably don’t relate to academics, and even if they do we’re too stubborn to get help, which is why we get bad grades.

Anyways that’s my ramble over, again sorry for seeing this so late and for the big essay, I get way too carried away. I hope Ravenclaw stereotypes don’t get you down, because they’re just that - stereotypes. Only a true Ravenclaw knows what Ravenclaws are like so don’t let the Gryffindors, Slytherins, or even Hufflepuffs of the world tell you otherwise!

Can’t believe we’re in 2018 and still having to explain why Snape was a bad person.

Also want to make the distinction that I think Snape was a good character, in the sense he was well written. We could never really tell which side he was most loyal to (if he was strictly loyal to any side in the first place, given what he does for the Order but also his agreement with some/most of Death Eater and Voldemort ideals) which leaves it up to the reader to decide their own opinion on Snape, which frankly mirrors real life really well. I’ve always admired JK for her writing when it comes to characters and Snape is no exception.

However, I think Snape was a bad person, in the sense that even though some of things he did were good, a lot of other things were, to me, terrible.

One point made was essentially that Snape had to treat his students horribly so he himself wouldn't be killed. While that is true he couldn't exactly be making friendship bracelets with the trio, he didn't have to be horrible to other students, or even to the trio at all. He could have done the bare minimum as a professor which was to teach the students, not almost killing a pet but also not giving Harry a pat on the back for getting a question right. He could have taught, responded neutrally to questions or mistakes, and moved on. Nobody would have thought he was Dumbledore’s right hand man if he just did his job without going to extra mile to make students like Neville terrified of him.

Speaking of Dumbledore, it at least appears he favors Gryffindor, though whether this is because of Harry or because he is Gryffindor himself, or simply because Harry does save the school multiple times and he’s just trying to be nice, it does seem unfair that he gives Gryffindor so many extra points right at the end of the year. Just because Dumbledore does something similar doesn't excuse Snape from doing the same thing by taking from every house except his own. No one ever mentioned Dumbledore favoring Gryffindor was acceptable (if he even is, which is not the topic right now). Snape, however, clearly does show Slytherin bias. Even if other professors take more, they also give back those points fairly, while Snape only takes from other houses and only gives points to Slytherin. His ruling of who deserves points taken away and/or given is judged by which house that student is in, not because of what they did.

Of course James wasn't a total saint - we see all the crap things he does to Snape and the “kids will be kids!” excuse doesn’t excuse him from humiliating Snape constantly in their years at Hogwarts, the same going for Sirius, Remus, and Peter (even though Remus and Peter seem to stay mostly silent during the scene we are shown). However, James did grow up, otherwise Lily wouldn’t have even thought about dating James. If I remember correctly, Sirius makes this exact point after Harry asks after seeing the way James acted and doubting his father. In addition Remus treats Snape with respect at Hogwarts and puts aside their past in order to remain professional as well as ensure Snape still makes him those potions so he’s not a danger to students, which of course I will give Snape credit for doing so despite his grudge against Remus. But even after the Marauders have moved on, Snape still seeks out revenge for high school pranks, and he thinks that a fitting way to do this is have innocent Sirius’ soul sucked out by a dementor and Remus fired, essentially ruining his life (a professor being fired for being a werewolf isn’t exactly easy to keep quiet, even if Dumbledore wanted to - any potential employer would immediately see this if Remus tried to get a job and most likely turn him away).

And don’t tell me that Snape’s reason for outing Lupin was to keep the students safe. He could have continued to keep them safe by brewing Remus his potion, instead of getting the man fired.

Anyways I could go on but the people up above did a damn good job already. In the future I’ll probably make a separate post expanding on the points against Snape.

So I’ve been reading Harry Potter for the first time and all I have to say is…

I friggin hate Snape and he needs to get out of here and take a friggin shower and wash his greasy hair cuz it’s disgusting. I hope he dies it such a shame that such a sexy name as Severus would have to go to the worst character. I hope he dies alone in a hole forever. That’s all.

The Houses as Summer Things

Ravenclaw: The slow lowering of the tide that reveals all the little seashells and skittering crabs hidden in sandbars, the little crumbling sandcastle built just at the edge of the ocean so as the waves come up the water fills the moat around it, long, quiet drives to vacation spots, humid, rainy days best spent indoors, swimming out in the rain.

Hufflepuff: The loud cacophony of crickets and bullfrogs, eating ice cream before it melts onto your hand, the smell of a pleasant sunscreen, the warmth of laying out in the sun for hours, the gentle comfort of floating in the water, trying to run away from pesky bugs, the taste of sweet watermelon as the sticky juice drips down your hand.

Slytherin: The dry humidity that makes it hard to breathe sometimes, late night adventures when it finally gets a bit cooler, swimming at night time when no one else is around, light shimmering on the water as it gets darker, finally being able to wear clothes that show a lot of skin, frozen popsicles that stain your skin rainbow colors.

Gryffindor: Running across hot sand because you have no flip-flops on, splashing people relentlessly with cold water and laughing the whole time, watching Jaws right before going to the beach, the salty smell of sea air, junky t-shirts but beautiful bathing suits, frozen drinks on a particularly hot day, hanging out with friends pretty much every day.

You know this is bad representation when some people didn't even know Dumbledore is gay. (Not the person’s fault, just the fault of the people who made a gay character with no indication of his sexuality)

I’m so heartbroken over this.

This movie is based on one of the biggest cultural phenomenas in this day in age. Millions of people will see it. I was so excited because that meant millions of people would enjoy a movie with heavy gay representation and it would be seen as totally normal part of the character, and as a normal part of life. As bisexual myself, it was so cool to find out Dumbledore was gay, even if just in an interview.

But now they are passing up the perfect, one of the absolutely most perfect opportunities to have gay representation in a highly anticipated movie. Sure they say “Not explicitly” meaning maybe it will be slightly shown or hinted, but it sounds like they’re shoving Dumbledore in a closet and not going to let him out fully for a while. But why? Why not just say he’s gay? Why have it be this whole plot line or ‘mystery’ and not just say it outright? Why not make the movie a whole lot more interesting and have him and Grindelwald show explicit romantic feelings towards each other and have all of the surrounding characters treat it just as any heterosexual relationship would be shown?

I’m not like heterophobe or whatever, but if one of the two was a girl, they would not hesitate to explicitly state their relationship.

I will say that movie isn't out yet of course so this criticism might fall flat, but I’m so disappointed they’re turning Dumbledore’s sexuality into a plotline instead of just making it part of his character,

Okay but guys, why doesn't Snape just keep Lupin’s secret?

Maybe Lupin was a jerk to him as kids, but if Snape got over that childish grudge, he could have a pretty sweet teaching deal for himself. He would still be able to teach potions, but when Lupin gets sick every full moon, he could also teach Defense Against the Dark Arts.

Like he gets to teach two of his favorite subjects but he would rather get revenge for some school bullying??????
