Photo

Long before the introduction of color film, a Russian chemist and photographer named Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky used an innovative technique. He took three individual black and white photos, each through a colored filter (red, green, and blue), to create fully colored, high-quality pictures. The photo of this woman, taken by him, is around 107 years old!

hot take: the problem with doctor who is NOT that they brought billie piper back, it is NOT that ncuti left early, it is NOT that 15 never faced a dalek or a cyberman, and it is CERTAINLY NOT that itās ātoo wokeā
the problem with doctor who is that they have forgotten how to engage an audience without utterly confusing them. if i were a writer, this is what iād change:
1. i would lower the stakes
my biggest issue with dw in recent years is that the stakes are always SO high - itās always āwe need to sort this out or else the ENTIRE UNIVERSE WILL END. this rarely happened at the start of nuwho. of course, there were instances where galaxies and universes were at stake, but there were also plenty of instances where the doctor solves issues to A. save his own skin, B. save his friends, and C. to save smaller populations of people and/or generally do what is morally right.
prime example is in new earth. the world isnāt really at stake, he has a couple of objectives: get cassandra to piss off, free the test subjects, stop the infections from spreading. he doesnāt spend the hour worrying that if he doesnāt help then the world will end, he sees a problem thatās morally corrupt and he solves it for the sake of that group. the payoff is just as good, and actually IMPROVES the payoff for episodes where a bit more is at stake, like the poison sky, for example.
2. i would stop plots from spilling over across seasons
iād like to remind everyone that, although there were things that kind of linked into each other and were mentioned again, generally for the first 4 seasons of (new) doctor who, an overarching issue was built up, climaxed, and resolved throughout a single season. for example: bad wolf in s1. this has gotten worse and worse over time but has honestly been a problem since rtd1 ended, and for some reason when he came back it got WORSE than itās ever been!!! thereās just way too much overspill across seasons, things even span accross different doctors more recently which is just too much at times. when itās little things it doesnāt matter, but itās not. again, this has been an issue before this finale, but this finale is a good example since there were a hundred and one loose ends before he regenerated. when nuwho began, they literally stated each regen would be treated as a soft reboot and their neglect of that has been a downfall.
3. iād make doctor who dirty and grungy again
itās too clean futuristic ultra modern sci-fi these days. the tardis doesnāt look like he stole it. what happened to those fun tardis scenes where the entire thing would shake as it took off and landed? why is everything so light and clean? it should be dim and cozy and imperfect.
4. iād make the companionsā family members more prominent and interesting characters again
doesnāt take much explaining, really. picture jackie tyler, now picture carla sunday. who has a stronger presence and personality in your head and why is it jackie tyler? (thereās bound to be someone who disagrees and thatās fine but i donāt rlly want to hear about it tbh)
5. iād re-inject some british whimsy
please donāt mistake this as me saying doctor who āisnāt britishā or something weird and gammon-y like that, i love when dw explores different cultures, the story and the engine was one of my highlights last season, i just mean like - let him save the world with a jammy dodger again. let him be brought back to life by a good cup of tea. it makes it enjoyable.
there are lots of things, but those are my main ones.
EDIT: thank you to everyone who has weighed in on this - iāve found it really interesting to see everyoneās perspectives on this because honestly i could talk for king and country about it, but also i just wanted to say that it makes me kind of sad that one of my only negative posts about doctor who is my most popular post :( if youāre reading this, itās your sign to do something positive today, if i can help to make just one personās day better then thatās a win to me :)

Like, do i belive in second chances? Yes, for the most part.
But do I also believe Conrad should have died in prison like the Doctor said he would? Also yes.
It's not that i don't think he could be redeemed, it's think everyone is capable of change. But Conrad didn't do anything to earn that second chance. He didn't come around, he didnt change sides and help fight the bad guys. He didn't realize he was wrong and ask for forgiveness. He got Ruby thanking him for making his wish world "kind" ( a big fuck you to Shirley who was homeless and Rose who was just gone from reality), and then she wished he was "happy", which feels out of character for her seeing as how a minute earlier she wanted to punch him, and I don't remember any prior indication in her character that mentioned she was especially compassionate.
Just a weird choice in an episode full of weird choices.

But for real, what was the point of creating a romance between Rogue and the Doctor if they send Rogue to hell at the end with a "find me" line thrown at us, if the Doctor never actually goes and tries to find him.
It makes the Doctor seem so uncaring. We all know they're not supposed to be this amazing person all the time, the Doctor certainly has flaws. But Ncuti's doctor had such a weird contrast between their bubbly personality while also being really cold about other people sometimes.
And then they even make Rogue have another appearance on the finale part 1 and a throwback to their dance scene on the finale part 2. All for what? Don't get me wrong, the memes about Rogue were really funny, but as a narrative standpoint, it's the opposite of heartwarming, it makes it seem like the Doctor just doen't care at all about him.
Another gripe I have with Doctor romances is the amount of times the Doctor off handedly mentions they had a fling with some historic figure or something, but we can never see them happy with a real character. Like, am I missing something here?? Am I crazy?? Why is the Doctor capable of all this romances off screen, but they turn cold and distant in the actual episodes? Are they a different character when we're not watching?
They had amazing chemistry with Rogue, it was so sweet to see, couldn't we have got him as a temporary companion at least? No, send the queer man to superhell I guess.

So... Doctor Who finale thoughts:
1. RTD really didn't stick the landing uh? The episode was so underwhelming
2. I'm absolutey griving the fact we won't be seeing Ncuti as the doctor anymore. He was seriously one of my favorites, he was FANTASTIC in the role. And he wasn't even able to have a proper arc. We only saw him in basically 14 episodes and he's gone!
3. It was a joy to see Jodie again, at least we had that
4. I haven't seen anyone mention this but the Rani died such a silly death! Literally no closure or anything. It was SO WEIRD I thought the doctor was about to save her and we never see her again
5. Where's Susan? I was really hoping she would be the finale's regeneration, not Ncuti :( why did they bring her back just for that, I thought something more would happen
6. So turns out that those things we have been noticing throughout the season where Belinda just knows things she shouldn't or couldn't know yet was really bad writing all allong! Silly us for thinking it was going somewhere, I guess!
7. I agree with all the theories saying this plot was written with Ruby in mind, this plot made no sense for Belinda and they literally put her in a box for a part of the episode so that Ruby can go be the focus again. I- don't even know what to say
8. Speaking of that, I agree that so many of these choices were really badly thought out by RTD. Belinda got the Martha treatment and at this point it seems problematic. Why was motherhood forced onto the character? She never expressed any interest in children at all and suddenly her whole existence gets retconned by the doctor so that Poppy always existed. She doesn't even know what happened to her and what type of life she had before all this. I hated it
9. I know she is really smol and young but they could have tried to give some personality to Poppy's character, the stakes where too high to save a character we had no relationship with. I didn't care and I felt like Ncuti's ending deserved something better. It's the first time, I think, we see a regeneration happen for something we really didn't care about. When Ten sacrificied himself for Wilf, we cared because it was Wilf. But Poppy, we barely know her, she's just a plot prop, sadly! I would have loved for them to explore the doctor has a father more. We are pushed to care about all this after we see the doctor with Poppy for like two seconds
And all that for Poppy to become human again, what was the point of it all?
10. I reeeally don't even know how to feel about Billie Piper as the doctor. I love her and I love Rose, her and Donna are my favorite companions! But it's weird for the doctor to have a companion's face imo. I also noticed people are already talking about the character as if she's just Rose and calling her Rose, but it's the Doctor, it doesn't make any sense to act like it's not, but it seems people are already a bit confused and I can't judge them. RTD what are you doing?
11. To end this rant, I was so wishing this wouldn't be Ncuti's goodbye, but here we are :(
I never believed the Billie Piper rumours because it just sounded so silly to me. I was really hoping that, if we had to have a doctor regeneration and it was a female actress that had already been on the show, that it would be Suranne Jones. I believe she would be an absolutely amazing doctor!!!! I loved her on Gentleman Jack. I think she could be such a sarcastic doctor, a bit reminiscent of Nine, who I so miss
Rose Tyler, the woman that you are, haunting the narrative until the very end. Let's see where this goes!

Say what you will about Sunrise on the Reaping (I myself loved it but I know some people found it a little lacking compared to the other books and I can understand why) but finishing the book has brought me back to this fandom and I'm so so glad and happy about it
I just rewatched The Hunger Games and Catching Fire and made my partner sit down and watch them for the first time and it was so much fun! Seeing him react to the iconic "if it weren't for the baby" and so many other scenes.. and being able to just tell him little bits of lore that didn't make it into the movies aaaaa
And then I realised how Catching Fire came out in 2013 and god damn how did time fly by so fast, I was a teen! It's been 12 years what do you meeeean. The fucking nostalgia of it all. And the freaking movie was such a good adaption, still holds up so well. And I can't believe it's been more than 12 years since I've been an obsessed teenager that loved these freakin books. And now I'm almost 30 and I still love this franchise so much and see so much value in it
I just think that's so neat and special
#can't wait to watch mockinjay part one and two next#really want to see his reactions to all of it#and then he can go see sotr with me next year#thg#thg sotr#the hunger games#catching fire#sunrise on the reaping#sotr#sotr thoughts#thg thoughts
