HYEHYEON KWON – MOVABLE POINT solo exhibition

SomoS Artist-in-Residence summer 2021, Carlos Pesudo (b. 1992, Castellón, Spain), is a Madrid based visual artist working in painting, video, and installation. Aesthetically and philosophically referencing the legacies of Spanish Informel, Abstract Expressionism, and Zero, Pesudo connects these art-historical traditions with contemporary influences.

The Digitalia exhibition with Rah Eleh and Joshua Vettivelu was developed by Indo-Canadian curator Noor Bhangu during a Curatorial Residency at SomoS in 2020. "Digitalia" invites us to look at "the ways in which the digital, marginal, and genital intersect." August 26th – 28th 2020, SomoS resident artists Karon Nilzén, Carlos Herraiz, and Marguerite Harris present their latest work during the REvisited group exhibition; an installation combining fabric and metal sculptures, light installation, video works, photography, and painting. A shared tread involving memory and rediscovery unites the presented works. Be it the journey – sentimental or stylistic – to a former era or earlier version of oneself; the re-appropriation of outdated media; the love of the aged, the decayed and the discarded; or the reclaiming of the ideals and expressions of past art- and social movements.

Artist Hannah Santana’s “How Does it Feel?” is a selection of hospital gowns customized by patients themselves, sharing with the viewer their very personal experience with illness.

South-Korean artist Jiyeon Kim conceived her Meme Paintings in early 2020 during her Berlin artist residency. These collage-style paintings are the result of an extensive composition process that combines acrylic-painted fragments with digital parts that have been printed and pasted to the canvas. Hear the artist talk about her career, her works and her elaborate artistic process.

Today we’re reminiscing back to the first exhibition of the year at SomoS with Belgian artist Jan Verbruggen’s solo exhibition titled ‘Thesauros, The Treasury. Verbruggen’s installation created a platform where viewers curated the sizeable collection of paintings into a cohesive and concise display. While in one sense an overload for the viewer, this process was also relieving: “In this digital era where images are generally archived to be browsed on a screen, it’s liberating to touch, feel, smell and interact with the paintings of Jan Verbruggen. “Thesauros, The Treasury” gave the spectator a tactile experience that brought us to the core of painting.”
