Ultimate, world-class luxury fashion house meets the street, millennial visionary.
Luxury French fashion house Louis Vuitton recently announced their new menswear designer.
Meet, Virgil Abloh. His name may be new to some of you, but the 37-year old Chicago native is the founder of the fashion label Off-White, founded in 2012 in Milan, Italy.
Abloh has said to have began his brand ‘in the alley’s of the internet’ and see’s fashion as an ‘art practice’.
After mastering Architecture in 2009 at The Illinois Institute of Technology, he interned at Italian luxury fashion-house Fendi (with your favorite rapper Kanye West). Abloh notably created Kanye & Jay-Z’s infamous ‘Watch The Throne’ album artwork, which has since been cited as one of the most iconic Hip Hop album covers of all time, and earned Abloh a Grammy Nomination for ‘Best Recording Package’.
He then went onto launch ‘Pyrex Vision’. This was his first label, which has now evolved into the brand you see in your local Barneys, Selfridges, Harrods and Harvey Nics- ‘Off White’.
Encompassing hip hop style with haute couture, Off-White was labelled as the new ‘street culture’. Indeed, I believe the brand has forged high-end luxury with street-wear fashion. It’s trenchant, distinctive and totally chic but with a little more edge.
Being a fashion lover (and online-shopping addict) myself, I came to notice Off-White for the first time here in Dubai. Whilst swooning through the handbag section in Harvey Nichols, I was stopped in my tracks when I saw a black leather clutch bag which stated ‘for display only’. Off-White definitely stood out to me- make way for the millennial fashion culture!
Abloh has collaborated with many international brands such as Levi, Nike Air Jordan and Jimmy Choo, where he created a unique spin on the classic satin pumps- a collection inspired by the late Princess Diana, certainly still a modern muse, and an inspiration to Abloh.
Abloh’s talents do not end there. The creative director is also a DJ, otherwise known as ‘FLAT WHITE’. (Yes, like the drink, which we love also). But seriously, he has done some impressive sets, and now, he has the ultimate French elite brand set in his sights...
Louis Vuitton was founded in 1854, proving to be one of the worlds oldest luxury brands. Old it may be, but LV is, if not, the most recognisable, valuable brand in the world.
Born in Jura, France, Louis Vuitton left home on foot at the tender age of 13, bound for Paris. And two years later, he arrived. At 16 years old, Vuitton was taken on as an apprentice at Monsieur Marechal, a box-making company.
In 1854, after spending years perfecting his craft, Vuitton left Marechal at age 33, and opened his Louis Vuitton store on Rue Neuve des Capucines in Paris. He launched his classic (now emblem embedded) canvas trunks.
By 1885 he opened his first store on Oxford Street in London, and began his worldwide takeover after the passing of his father. Need I say, the rest is history.
The ultimate, world class luxury fashion house meets the street, millennial visionary. I am looking forward to seeing how the two worlds collide and what magic it may bring.

Most recently, we have found ourselves slightly shocked to read about the current islamaphobia that is still happening around us.
One of the most recent stories I read about on the Daily Mail, was that of a British Muslim named Fouzia, who had applied for a teaching job at an English playgroup. Fouzia was told by the playgroup she would have to remove her hijab because the “parents didn’t want their children to be taught by covered teachers”.
The big question for me is, why can’t women work and wear hijab at the same time? It does not impeach their ability to work hard and do their job. An even bigger question for me would be, why should a woman’s appearance have to affect her job at all?
If she is a corporate professional, working marketing, education, law or real estate, shouldn’t it solely be based on her capability and qualification?
Women should not be afraid to wear their hijab, especially to their workplace or a job interview. If your desired employer turns you down for what you believe to be because of your hijab, then let them. This only shows their lack of understanding of your faith and different culture, and you would not want to be apart of such an environment.
We say, enough of the negative! We want to project more positive stories of success and see hijab in high places.
Successful female Muslim Wardah Khalid, gives presentations and workshops across the U.S on foreign policy, advocacy and Islam. She speaks at universities and conferences, shedding light on women in Islam and overcoming bias in the workplace.
The inspirational Layla Shaikley is a voice for Muslim women. Not only is she the maker of the viral video “Muslim Hipsters: #mipsterz,” created to combat the media stereotypes of Muslim women, Shaikley’s resume is beyond impressive. The NASA intern studied a Masters Degree in Architecture at MIT (Massachusetts institute of Technology). She has since founded her first start-up which combines both development and data to protect conflict zones, along with a software called Wise Systems helping companies make real-time delivery decisions.
When speaking with CNN, if she could tell her 18-year-old self one thing, Shaikley answered, it would be to “overreach”. It was her mentor who had urged her to apply to intern at NASA, though she was at a “huge disadvantage without an astro background” she got the internship. And ever since that’s what she did. Overreach, always, and overreach we will!

Fashion Blog Content for client Desert Cove
Hijab takes to the World Stage at New York Fashion Week!
We at Desert Cove are all about hijab-friendly fashion designs, and we were thrilled to see hijab take to the world stage at New York Fashion Week again this year. Back in 2017, Indonesian muslim fashion designer Anniesa Hasibuan made a name for herself, by being the first designer to have every model wear hijab in her show.
Anniesa Hasibuan believes “fashion is for everyone” and we couldn’t agree more. Fashion is for everyone and everyone influences fashion. Beauty lies in all cultures, and by bringing hijab into the mainstream world of fashion, we are slowly but surely changing the way the world views fashion in the western world- and that is an incredible achievement.
It didn’t stop there. Anniesa Hasibuan admirably took the opportunity to break down such stereotypes, by casting models who were all immigrants. What a time to be alive- in this political frenzy of protests, women's marches, feminism is soaring, and such a statement must be made!
Ever displaying the beauty of her Indonesian culture through her designs, models in Hasibuan’s show cruised down the runway in an array of chic, silky fabrics in pastel, blush hues with flashes of bronze, silver, and gold that resembled something of a fairy-tale. As written on her Instagram, her collection was inspired by women who ‘had the power to change’.
With 2018′s New York Fashion Week having just past us, we see hijab is still on the radar. Muslim designer Vivi Zubedi showcased her opulent, creative collection inspired by traditional muslim dress of hijab and abayas with a modern, urban twist, keeping it on-trend. Even international favourite Marc Jacobs donned his models in turban-styled head scarfs topped with a brimmed hat.
Clearly, designers are inspired by all cultures and have most likely been since the beginning of time. Even if it’s within the fashion industry, we hope to see the western world evolve over time, and see hijab for its true beauty.
Check out our online fashion store for similar designs.
Diversity in sportswear fashion? Yes, please!
The desire to own chic sportswear has risen considerably in the past few years, what with Beyonce’s Topshop collaboration for her activewear Ivy Park brand, and Rihanna’s ultra-successful Puma X FENTY collections. Recently we have seen more athleisure brands also displaying models in hijab, and not only here in the Middle East.
So, what did we see at 2018′s New York Fashion Week? Popular ‘it-girl’ model (and new brand ambassador) Kendall Jenner may have been the initial attraction, but multinational sports brand Adidas Originals latest collection at New York Fashion Week was designed by the inspiring 23-year-old Amsterdam Fashion Institute student, Danielle Cathari, and featured a hijab-clad model.
Cool and urban with a street theme going on, the collection features laid-back, 90s styled attire, including; a timeless, sporty denim number, both bold and neutral coloured two-piece sets with loose fit, casual trousers paired with hip crop tops and zip-up jackets.
Check out our activewear on Desert Cove and incorporate similar designs in your every-day outfits.

Photo of the day
Taken by yours truly at the foot of the Burj Khalifa.
The Burj Khalifa stands at a whopping 2,722 feet tall, and to be standing right at the foot of the building, looking up to see it towering over you, glistening in the night sky is rather break-taking.
Designed by American architect Adrian Smith, the skyscraper is the centrepiece of the Downtown district of Dubai, and more prominently, the tallest building in the world.
Boasting the best views of Dubai from the observation deck featuring The Dubai Fountain, the building holds a swanky nightclub on the 144th floor, an envious fitness club and the trendy Armani Hotel.
There are numerous restaurants and bars in the Downtown area including The Address Hotel by Dubai Mall, and Souk Al Bahar, giving you the best views of the Burj Khalifa- most definitely a sight to see.

“Back to vamp”.
This is a trend I love! I wanted to share with you guys some of my favorite dark lipsticks (in picture order from top left to right).
1. Urban Decay ‘Blackmail’: A creamy, highly pigmented formula in a stunning deep red with a brown, purple hue. Perfect if you don’t want to go all out purple. Opt for this vampy red instead!
2. Kat Von D in Poe: Who else is just loving Kat Von D’s collection at the minute? The makeup really is long lasting and fabulous. This nautical shade is super edgy. #GoodGirlGoneBad
3. MAC in Blue Beat: Rich Blueberry vibes with this one! Go for something a bit different with MAC’s intense formula in Blue Beat.
4. Too Faced in Ursula: Another brand I’m loving right now! The gold packaging is divine. Go Disney villain with this shimmering, badass plum.
5. Revlon in Va Va Violet: A more cost-friendly option for you savvy savers. Try this vivacious violet shade by Revlon, combining intense colour with a slight shimmer.
I love to pair this look with some bold lashes and eyeliner.
“Top 5 Event Makeup Tips!”
By Sophia
Photographs- The camera can wash you out in your photographs, so play up your makeup and put on a little more than usual.
Always apply your foundation with a brush (or beauty blender) for a flawless finish. Apply in a patting, circular motion- don’t rub it in with a rough hand
Brighten up your under-eye- correctors, and concealers are the secret to the universe. These products will enhance your entire look and brighten up your entire face. I recommend Bobbi Brown’s extensive corrector and concealer collection. With a wide variety of shades, you’re bound to find your perfect match.
Primer, primer, primer! For all day, long-lasting coverage, use a primer under your foundation. I recommend Too Faced’s Primed and Poreless. Don’t forget to use a primer on your eye-lids too! Keep your eyeshadow in place for up to 12 hours with Bobbi Browns Longwear Eyebase. This will keep your eye makeup crease-free and colour true.
Finishing touches- Urban Decay’s All Nighter Long-Lasting Setting Spray does the trick. This popular must-have product keeps your makeup looking perfect for up to 16hours.
“Power of the Brow.”
With the help of Cara Delevigne, eyebrows have taken the beauty and fashion world by storm. Big brows, defined brows, arched brows, bushy brows, ombre brows- you name it, we’re paying attention to our brows like never before.
Some eyebrow products do not have enough pigment, some color shades are way off, some pencils are too fine, some are too thick, and sometimes ‘waterproof’ products end up running all the way down your face when it starts raining or you hop in the shower.
Below I have selected my top 3 brow products;
Anastasia Beverley Hills- Dip Brow Promenade
The infamous dip brow! This delightful gel brow product is one of the most popular on the market- and so it should be. It has a strong pigment, giving you instant, defined brows. It is the most smudge-proof/ water-proof product I have used.
Anastasia Beverley Hills- Brow Wiz
The alternative pencil from Anastasia is an ultra-Slim, strongly pigmented, ten-hour wear product. It is considered an easier, quicker application if you are not familiar with using a brow brush.
Benefit Ka-Brow Cream Gel Colour
Though I have not heard fabulous reviews from their on-counter brow shaping waxing services, their products have proved to be a hit. Since their big Ka-Brow launch, beauty bloggers have been loving the Cream-Gel Colour, which gives you full brow drama.
