"I Love a Spookulele!" is an independent animated pilot created by Sally Grey and starring Janet Klein, currently in production.
Set during prohibition in the late 1920s, it's a ukulele-jazz musical and a Halloween special. The story follows Anette Calloway, voiced by Janet Klein (Over the Garden Wall), as she is swept away from her life as a gravedigging ex-bootlegger by the reanimated skeleton of Jonesy Klein, a wise-cracking ex-gangster. Together, they adventure through the Halloweeny and monster-filled world of Hallow's Hollow, playing jazzy ukulele tunes, smugglin' booze, and getting into gallons of trouble. Our team in very small but mighty, and we hope you'll stick around to see more updates; they come every week (if I can help it).
A website including all concept art, songs, animation tests, information, and ultimately the finished pilot animatic is currently under construction, but for now, Tumblr is what we have. Thank you for visiting Hallow's Hollow!

Happy indie animation day! Here's a little reel of some really fun linereads from Janet, who you may recognize as being Miss Langtree in Over the Garden Wall. I just love her crazypants energy as Anette, she really has the range
This is a track I tossed together a few months back, and I'm pretty happy with it! It still needs some additional production (some stroh violin that I'm in talks with a musician about, maybe some mandolin and some extra editing to make it more crisp), but it's pretty close! This sort of serves as the main musical motif in the whole pilot, but it's not the only song I've written for the pilot. Hoping to post more updates soon! Keep your lil' eyeses peeled!
Foolin' around with expressions. I've been thinking an awful lot about where i pull my facial expression inspo from, especially for this project. I try to give all of my pitches and projects their own unique individual styles, especially in really small details like how i draw the mouths or hands. I think the expressions in Spookulele! some from a whole host of different stuff like Gravity Falls, Rankin and Bass, Loony Tunes and Tex Avery, Lupin the Third, and the Great Mouse Detective (and like, 60's to 80's era Disney in general). I mean, there's more than just that, but i think those are the ones that I've noticing most lately. I'm always noticing new things in my art. That thing they say about steal like an artist or whatever. I just like to keep close track of where I'm stealing from I guess. I'm thinking of putting together a huge document of all the shit that's influenced the project, I think it would be fun
These are probably the oldest drawings I have of Anette and Jonesy. So Old in fact that I hadn't even picked out a first name for Jonesy yet (I wouldn't have one until 2 and a half years later technically, because Jonesy is just a nickname). I've been sorting through some OOOOLLD art lately for reasons, some of which you can see on the tikkitytok
