Owen blinked. “Mateo, since I’ve been in here, any time you move, it appears to cause you pain. And I saw you yesterday morning; you were wearing those clothes. Now, are you really going to tell me that you’re completely fine and nothing hurts?” Owen fixed his young roommate with a hard stare. Mateo met his gaze initially, but then dropped it and murmured, “Well, maybe my chest hurts… a little tiny bit…” “Uh huh,” Owen said, looking around the room. “Where are your shoes? We’re going to the hospital.”

“Do you ever wish we met earlier?” He asks, blurts really.

TK sits back in his lap and scrunches his nose, clearly wondering where the question is coming from.

“No,” he says definitively, reaching out to pull Carlos’s shirt over his head. He lifts his arms compliantly. “We met at the right time.”

“You seem sure,” Carlos responds, settling his hands on TK’s thighs again. “Maybe we would have been good for each other? Could have saved each other some heartache.”

“Maybe,” TK concedes. “But, honestly, if you weren’t doing Molly or heroin with me I probably wouldn’t have noticed you.” He bites his lip. “Well, I would’ve noticed you. How could I not? But I wouldn’t have been good for you. I would’ve dragged you down.”

“Trust me, I had my own problems,” Carlos sighs. Realizes that TK’s right. As much as TK wasn’t in any place for the kind of relationship they’re in now, two or three years before they met, he wasn’t ready for TK yet either.

ok, this is more than seven sentences but I don't care i wanted to share more than that so

The last week had been a bit of a whirlwind, between Jonah’s summer break starting and Carlos having to pick up some extra shifts– they had both been stretched a little thin. He hoped the next few days would be a nice change in pace, they could go for a swim in the lake, do some short hikes, chase each other around the camping, maybe even finally, finally, have sex. God, he missed sex. It had only been a week, but still. He missed it. “You okay?” came his husband’s voice. “Yeah,” he answered, “Just resting my eyes a bit” TK snorted. “Don’t.” “I wasn’t gonna say anything!”  He peeped one of his eyes open to shoot TK a look, “Uh huh” “You're becoming a dad. I think that’s beautiful” “Shut up” TK giggled again. “Would you like me to set an alarm for when you’re done resting your eyes? We do need sunlight to pitch the tent, so–” “Oh my god,” he groaned, opening his eyes and putting his hands back on the steering wheel. “There! I’m going, you little…” he fumbled for the right word, and TK raised one of his eyebrows at him in challenge. “...bitch” He burst out laughing and Carlos joined in. “Oh my god, babe. You do need some time away from Jonah,” he gasped out in between laughs.

Seven Sentence Sunday

Happy Sunday! I hope you all have a wonderful day! Since I shared a short snippet with TK and Ashlyn, I figured I could share one with Carlos and Sam this time. (From Chapter 4 of A Dangerous Game, coming Tuesday). (It's not seven sentences, but I won't tell if you won't).

“Reyes! Just who I was looking for." Sam barges into the break room, a wide grin across his lips. He claps his hands together. "It’s important. Critical, even. Help me settle this: would you rather possess the ability to communicate with squirrels—though they are all deeply pessimistic and only share bad news—or be able to speak every human language fluently, but only when doing a headstand?"

Carlos blinks, feeling a bubble of laughter rise in his chest, which quickly transforms into a loud, bark-like laugh—half relief, half delirium. "That's the critical question? The one that keeps you up at night, Campbell?”

"It’s called team-building, Reyes. Morale," Sam retorts, undeterred. "Well? Squirrel doomsayers or a very wobbly, upside-down polyglot?"

"Polyglot," Carlos declares after a beat. "No questions. It's too useful to pass up, even with the vertigo."

"Wrong," Sam declares, slamming a hand on the counter. "Think of the intel—squirrels are everywhere."

"What intel? They're just squirrels."

"They see everything. That little guy on the power line?" He points out the window. "His name is Josh, and he knows who's cheating on their diet or which kid skipped school today. He’s a furry spy that works for peanuts."

Carlos raises an eyebrow. "Okay, hotshot. But what makes you think a pessimistic squirrel named Josh wouldn't just lie to you for his own amusement?"

Sam freezes mid-gesture, his finger raised and his mouth agape. He slowly lowers his hand, scratching his chin in thought. "Huh, I didn't think of that. That… that really undermines the entire premise."
