12/23/24 - sentient toasters
ok imagine you have a sentient toaster. and it can speak to you and stuff, and it has feelings (simulated or not is a different discussion). anyway the most important thing to this experiment is that it feels pain when you unplug it
the question is whether you unplug it. it tells you it feels pain when you unplug it, and it hates the feeling of being without power.
now i think the large majority would unplug it if necessary, and think not much of it, and apologise and all that
but when happens if you imagine that instead of a toaster, it’s a humanoid robot.
the situation changes dramatically, even when only one thing really changes.
i personally would feel bad turning off something that resembles me, and especially if they feel pain from it
this is something we need to figure out in terms of the ethics of AI and rising technologies that have the outwards appearance of us, and i hope that we can create better infrastructure and guardrails to help us with these decisions

12/22/24 - album review: the undergrad
album rating: 5/10
fav songs:
mmm idk - feels like clouds :)
favorite skeleton - simplistic, but catchy
butterflies - aaaa this one is probably my favorite song
this album is so soft and fluffy and i love it soooo much
its short, but it's so good, and every song has its own charm and intrigue point
each song uniquely portrays a different, yet still raw emotion
go listen!!

12/21/24 - night in the woods
my favourite games make me feel things, and my favorite game of all time is night in the woods
i cried a lot playing it, and i grew so fond of the characters, even though it was a relatively short game
i highly suggest everyone play it
the characters are all so lovable, even though they may not be perfect, and there's so much depth in the setting, and the story, and i just love it so much
i pray that this game could change other people's outlook on life like it did mine
i cant spoil too much bc everything is so important, so go play it :3

12/20/24 - red
red is one of my favorite colours
it represents love, and intimacy
and yet also anger and frustration
it’s a colour of passion, directionless
isn’t that beautiful?

12/19/24 - competition
i was talking about this with yako yesterday, but i think our world has too much competition
it pits everyone against each other and it’s nigh impossible to have civilities with someone your competing with
and they brought up a good point that without competition there’s no motivation to be better, but i still think our world is such a dog eat dog world, and there’s no reason for it to be like that
we can be civil to each other, and i feel like discouraging that is altogether unhelpful to the advancement of humanity
i know it sounds like i’m on some hippie stuff but i just think that our world needs to like each other more

12/18/24 - music and justice
ever since the beginning of music, songs have always been about expressing feelings and ideas, so it’s no surprise that eventually, music was used as a platform for social justice
one of my favorite bands of all time is rage against the machine, and they are one of the most prevalent examples of social justice music. a lot of their discography is dedicated to anti authoritarianism and critiquing the US government
for example, their largest song, killing in the name protests police brutality and the hypocrisy of some police officers (also the song is just good go give it a listen)
and ratm isn’t just about making music with no action. they dedicated a lot of the profits from their 2020 tour to immigrant rights associations, and have publicly expressed their opinions on numerous other issues
we need more people who use music and other art platforms for good. a lot of the time, people who are in it for the profit taint the space, and we need people who are actually passionate

12/17/24 - education
sometimes i feel like we could do better
the school system really only teaches us to remember, regurgitate and then forget, and that helps noone when you actually need information
all ive learned is how to cram, and how to pass, and thats not what school should teach you
it should teach you that learning can be fun, and it shouldn't estrange kids just because they aren't the "academic type"
so do better
when you talk, speak with enthusiasm, show the world you have passion and excitedness for SOMETHING
we need to equip the next generation to want to learn and make the world a better place, but that can't happen if we stay stagnant

12/16/24 - procrastination
im actively procrastinating by writing this
i have a huge project i need to work on but i just cant bring myself to do it
this actually sucks
i feel like one of the worst feelings in the world is not being in control of your body
and it just sucks because i WANT to do it
i just cant
and idk why

12/15/24 - the stage
something about the theatre has always fascinated me. ive loved it since i was a kid, and even though i don't really perform anymore, i still long to be a part of that scene
performance is one of the rawest forms of media, because you get to experience movement and the characters up close and in person
in the moments you're witnessing the performance, theres a tangible between the audience and the performer, and nothing can sever that
its truly magical.
maybe one day i'll lose my stage fright again, but for now i'll have to be content watching
when you're on stage, you not only feel what you perform, you become it, and thats a feeling that cannot be easily forgotten

12/14/24 - artistry
it’s so stupid that we all collectively agree that art is an incredibly important part of society, but we treat artists horribly
it’s so hard to have a steady flow of income as an artist, and especially doing what you love still and not making compromises on what you can or cannot create
art is a crucial part of how we interpret our world and how we express our feelings about it, and i hope that one day artists will be truly appreciated for the impact they have on society
i love art but like it won’t continue to exist if we don’t offer avenues for it to be a viable reality
love,

12/13/24 - the advent of the social game
in recent years, we’ve found ways to introduce technologies into all parts of our lives, and it’s become a huge part of how we spend our time, especially with video games.
as humans, we are inherently social, so it was inevitable that we’d find ways to use these games to connect with one another. but no one could have predicted the surge of social games that would come with it.
the games i’m thinking of are games like the jackbox party packs, lethal company, webfishing, etc. all of these games have one thing in common: that it’s more fun to play together than alone.
for the first time in recorded history, we have a way to connect with our friends in a new way, and we’re in this space where developers and players are figuring out what exactly that looks like. i think it’s really exciting that we get to see this new social experiment arise, and i hope that these new games will be able to bring us together, instead of breaking us apart like a lot of the internet

12/12/24 - cottagecore
why have we made a system that we hate? less than half of americans are "very satisfied", so why do we continue to live and feed such a system?
recently i've been feeling really tired of life in general and i think running into the woods would fix me
living on a farm, being self sustaining, maybe the best way to move forward isn't to go forwards at all....
i feel like if this is how our society makes people feel, then maybe we should do something about it.
the problem is that it seems that creating systems where the value of human lives are integrated and acknowledged never seems to work. and thats the saddest thing that anyone could ever think of
its so disheartening to me that we may never have a system where everyone is truly equal and appreciated because there will always be greed. i pray that we may one day find peace with one another and with our world
yours,

12/11/24 - the sandbox
one of my favourite types of games is an open world “sandbox” where there’s not really a specific directive but more a box of ingredients where you can make whatever dish you like
games for me are a social experience, and so having such creativity is so conducive for interpersonal interaction and i love that
i believe one of the best ways to get to know someone is to create with them. whether it be building something in a game, or writing a song, the shared process of creation can reveal a lot about how you think and process the world. creating something with someone helps you to appreciate and understand that person so much better, and not only that, you’ll have a product you can both be proud of at the end.
i think one of the things that makes us really human is our inherent need to create. it drives us and pushes us forwards, and as we’ve seen, it can be an incredible uniting force
so i think that games that implement that type of creative aspect are so incredible for how they deal with the player experience
love,

12/10/24 - selling yourself
everything that you do online is tracked and collated into a digital representation of who you are
advertisers and companies will pay hundreds for data that will tell them what you like and what you hate, who you’re friends with and what you click on.
nothing is free. anything you don't pay for in cash, you pay in your data. we live in a reality where people’s datasets are sold at a premium so that greedy companies can become even richer, and thats LEGAL.
advertiser agents are required by law to provide a way to remove your data, but they use dark patterns to make it nigh impossible to ever get your data taken down. not only that, they just start doing it again the second you stop asking them.
those who have read 1984 may find our reality strikingly similar to the reality depicted in the book. we're constantly under surveillance, it just happens to be more discreet.
we need to start being more aware about what we share online and how we are percieved. thats the only way we can become more in control of what happens to our data.
sincerely,
june <3
p.s. sorry im late, i'll post again tonight to make up for it

12/9/24 - album review: rosie
album rating: 7*/10
*note on my ratings, i try and not to fall into the rating inflation trap so i think 7 is a pretty good score
top songs:
apt. (iconicccc i love this song so much)
gameboy (super interesting track with a lot of cool things going on)
two years (gives me jack antonoff vibes)
im ngl this album makes me hella sad for no reason but being sad isnt always a bad thing yk
i just got into rose's music after APT. was released and i honestly fell in love with the song. its so catchy and has such good production, not to mention BRUNO MARS???? i love this song with all my hearttttttttt
you can tell that its a deeply personal album and the intimate stripped back instrumental vibes are on point
i really like this album overall, and i hope rose releases new music soon!
sincerely,

12/8/24 - pokémon
i just started playing pokémon violet and i’ve decided that my ultimate goal is to make a cute team
people always focus on raw stats/performance, but all of their teams are ugly, and that’s kinda icky
we should normalise having aesthetically pleasing teams that don’t get shamed for being bad give us some powerful cute pokemon
also why are all the evolutions of the cute ones all like strange….like squirtle is so cute and then he turns into blastoise and like where did the cute go guys
hashtag make pokémon cute again
i’ll probably add more updates once i get further into the game
love,
june <3
