It had been about a week since Jake had brought you the coffee and croissant. In that time, you’d read and finished two more books of the Forevermore series and met for lunch a few times. True to your word, you gave your thoughts and feelings toward the books to Jake either through texts or over lunch. The two of you would discuss them, agreeing on most things but passionately disagreed on others.
“What do you mean Delimira didn’t deserve the crown? She fought just as hard as any of the men!” You practically shout.
“I mean sure, she fought for it, but does that inherently mean she deserves it? For example, if I just reach over and take one of your fries–” He says doing exactly that. You try and swat his hand away but he still takes one. “Since I ‘fought’ you for it and won, does that mean I deserve it?” He asks, eyebrow raised and a smirk on his face as he pops the fry into his mouth.
Narrowing your eyes, you answer, “No. But what exactly makes her undeserving? Is it the fact that Uthril had a claim to the throne by birth? Or is it something else?”
“No, I don’t think he deserved it just because he was born with a claim to it. I think Delimira purely wanted the throne for revenge. Sure, she says she wants to change the laws and society, but does she really? What was the first thing she did when she was crowned?” He questions.
“She called for a cease fire.” You answer.
“Yes, and–” He says, gesturing for you to continue. Seeing you shake your head in confusion, he says, “She swore the same blood oath has her predecessors. One she vowed never to take because it went against one of her core beliefs.”
“Yes, but she did it under duress.” You say.
Nodding along Jake says, “Yes, she did. But is that any excuse? Sure she saved the life of one. But damned many in return. Is the collateral damage worth it?”
Heart sinking at the realization, you shake your head. “No it’s not.”
Waving his hand, he says, “There you go. You and I both know Uthril would have chosen to lose the one versus the many. He proved that with the death of his brother.”
“I hate that you’re right.” You say flopping back against your chair.
“Awe c’mon, don’t take it so hard. Every dog has his day eventually.” He teases.
“Yeah, yeah. Whatever.” You say rolling your eyes trying to hide a smile.
Chuckling, Jake places his arms on the table and leans toward you. “So when are you starting volume four? I think it’ll be your favorite.”
“Probably in a couple days.” You say with a sigh. “I started my mid-year inventory count this morning and I’ll be working on that for the time being.”
“Does that normally take a while?” He asks.
“Sometimes. It depends on how much is in the back that’s been forgotten or if anyone has hidden away books to come back for later and then never did. Last year it only took one day, but I had help. This year it’s just me.” You say with a shrug.
“Well, I can help if you want.” He suggests.
“Really?” You question.
“Yeah, I mean I don’t have any plans. Plus it’ll help you get it done faster.” He replies with a shrug.
A smile brightens your face as you say, “Thank you. I’ll gladly take you up on it.”
He smiles softly back at you and asks, “What time do you want me to come by?”
“Anytime is fine.” You say. “Just text me when you’re on your way.”
Nodding, he says, “Alright. I’ll come once I finish my shift.”
“Sounds good! Well speaking of, I really should get back. I put up a ‘Be back in 30’ sign and it’s been just about that.” You say, standing and gathering your things.
Jake stands too. “Here I’ll clean that up, see you tonight.”
“Oh okay, thanks. I’ll see you later.” You say with a wave.
Once back at the store, you continue working on inventory in between customers. Around 5pm, you turn off the overhead lights and flip the sign to ‘closed’ before locking the door. Turning back to the rows of shelves, you take in a deep breath and let it out slowly. Running your hands through your hair, you roll your neck and rub your shoulders before getting back to it. Walking back over to where you’d stopped the count in the horror/thriller section, you sink down to your knees and restart the count.
“Five ‘From Below’ by Darcy Coates on shelf.” You mumble to yourself as you write it down on the notepad sitting beside you.
“Ding”
Looking over, you see your phone light up. Picking it up, you notice the time is now 7pm and you have a new message from Jake.
“Heading your way. Bringing curry and garlic naan. Thought you might be hungry.” He says.
Smiling, you stand and start making your way to the front door. Reaching the door, you see Jake walking down the sidewalk with a to go bag in one hand and a drink carrier in the other. Unlocking the door, you step out.
“Hey! Need help carrying that in?” You call, wrapping your arms around yourself to fend off the chill in the air.
“Nah, I’ve got it. Go back inside! It’s too cold out here!” He calls back.
Rubbing your arms you nod your head and step back inside.
“Hey, where do you want me to put this?” Jake asks as he steps inside a few moments later.
“Over on the counter would be great. I’ll go in the back and grab the extra stool.” You say as you turn to go get it.
“Just tell me where it is and I’ll grab it.” Jake says.
“It would be easier for me to just go grab it, it’s hidden behind a bunch of boxes. But I appreciate the offer!” You say continuing toward the back.
Walking straight to where the stool is, you grab it and carry it out to the counter. Coming through the doorway, you see Jake has shed his jacket and is pulling out container after container of food and sitting it on the counter.
“I thought you said you just got curry and naan bread!” You say, eyes wide as you look at the spread in front of you.
Shrugging as he pulls out the plastic cutlery and napkins, he says, “I did. And a few other things. I wasn’t sure what you liked. So I got a little bit of everything.”
“You didn’t have to do that! But thank you! What all did you get?” You ask, starting to open the different containers.
“Curry and naan, like I said, and samosa, jasmine rice, basmati rice, mango chutney and… I don’t really remember. I asked them to just give me their best menu items. Oh, and uh, coffee.” He says with a chuckle, rubbing the back of his neck.
A smile slowly spreads across your face. Tucking your hair behind your ear, you say, “That all sounds amazing. I think we’re going to need some extra plates though.”
Pulling them from the bag, Jake holds them up in the air and says with a laugh, “Already got ‘em.”
As the two of you finish eating, you catch him up to speed on how far you’d gotten and how long you think it’d take for the two of you to finish.
“That doesn’t sound too bad.” Jake says, wiping his mouth with a napkin.
Covering your mouth as you chew, you nod and say, “Nah. It might even get done quicker if we don’t find any hidden treasures.”
Standing, he asks, “Where do you want me to start?”
“Mmm, how about you start on the YA section. And once you get done with that, you can move on to the children's section.” You say as you hand him an extra notepad and pencil.
“Alright. I’ll let you know when I’m done there.”
You nod your head in agreement as you pack the leftovers up before putting them in the fridge in the little kitchenette in the back.
The two of you work to the sound of a playlist you’d found on Spotify earlier on in the day. You hum along to some of the songs as you count and write each book down. When you’re about halfway through the romance section, the back of your neck tingles and you feel someone behind you. Turning, Jake is leaning against one of the bookshelves watching you with a grin on his face.
“Hey, did you get done with the kids’ section?” You ask.
“Yep. Where do you need me next boss?” He asks, straightening and walking closer.
“Uh– It’d be great if you could start on fantasy. That section always takes me the longest.” You say.
“You got it.” He replies.
Turning back around you start to count again. Placing his hand on the small of your back, Jake slides around you. Shivers run down your back at the contact.
“Excuse me.” He whispers.
You nod your head in answer. Turning your head slightly, you watch him walk over to the fantasy section and begin counting books. Taking a deep breath, you try to calm your racing heart before clearing your throat and continuing with working on inventory.
A while later, you finish up with romance and stand. Stretching, you yawn and rub your forehead with the back of your hand. Walking over to where Jake is, you tap his shoulder to get his attention.
Holding up a finger, he finishes what he was working on before turning to you. “Yeah?” He asks.
“Where are you at on these?” You ask before noticing he’s staring at you with amusement in his eyes. “What are you looking at?” You ask, reaching up to touch your face.
With a chuckle, he says, “You’ve got a pen mark. Here let me–” He reaches out and touches your cheek, rubbing the mark away.
Slowly, his thumb stops moving and he’s just holding your face. His eyes flick to your lips, his own parting slightly. Through half-lidded eyes, he brings his gaze back to yours. You swallow thickly as your heart races in your chest.
“Jake–” you whisper, not sure what you’re wanting to say next.
“What is it, beautiful?” He asks, stepping closer, hand slowly moving from your face and down to the base of your neck.
“I–” You begin.
“Yes?” He encourages, leaning in.
Your eyes feel heavy and you draw in a shaky breath.
His mouth draws closer. His lips, ghost against yours. “Is this okay?” He asks, voice raspy.
You shake your head yes.
“I need to hear you say it.” He says, dropping his notepad and bringing his other hand to your waist, squeezing it in encouragement.
“Yes.” You breathe out.
“Thank god.” He rushes out before his lips crash into yours.
His lips are soft and he tastes of cigarettes and curry. The kiss starts gentle yet eager. His lips molding into yours. He cups your face and strokes your jaw line down the side of your neck with his thumb. It doesn’t take long for the kiss to turn needy. As it does, he takes your chin tilting it up and licks your bottom lip, asking for entrance.
You grant it with no hesitation and your tongue meets his and he groans. One hand slides down to your waist, grip tightening as he backs you against one of the bookshelves. Your back collides against it and you let out a gasp from the impact. Wrapping your arms around his neck, you pull him closer needing more of him. He presses into you, hands roaming your sides and his knee parting your thighs. You moan at the pressure his thigh provides. Your hands slide down his chest and fist his shirt.
“Jake–” You whine. “Please–”
He kisses and nips at the spot just below your earlobe, sending heat rushing to your core. “What beautiful? Do you need something more? Something more right here?” He asks, cupping your sex.
You let out a moan and nod frantically.
“Uh-uh. Use your words.” He rumbles.
“Y-yes. Please!” You whine, head falling back against the shelf.
He smirks and says, “Good girl.”
His hand slips into your jeans and he strokes you through the cotton of your panties, earning a flood of wetness.
“Already so wet for me, can feel it soaking through.” He rasps. He slides them to the side and rubs circles into your clit earning another moan from you. “You’re so wet I could probably use two fingers already.” He says, thumb rubbing your clit and two fingers teasing your entrance.
Your thighs squeeze together around his hand at the sensation. Desperate to feel more of him, your hand slides down and cups his length through his pants. Jake moans and drops his head against yours.
“Wanna make you feel good too.” You say, breathless.
Jake nods his head as he continues his ministrations. With that, you hurriedly fumble with his belt. After finally getting it unbuckled, you unbutton his pants, tearing down the zipper. Your hand reaches into his boxers and fingers wrap around his cock. He moans at the touch as he pushes two fingers inside of you.
“Oh fuck!” the two of you let out.
You stroke him as he pumps into you, matching each other's pace. His head falls to your shoulder, and he moans as he kisses the base of your next. Your free hand runs through his hair and gently tugs. It doesn’t take long for you to feel the coil of pressure in your lower stomach.
“Fuck! Jake! I’m–” You rush out.
“I know, baby. I know. Give it to me.” He says pumping into you faster, fingers curling into that sweet spot over and over.
Your orgasm rips through you as his fingers fuck you and his thumb fervently rubs your sensitive nub. Your eyes roll into the back of your head and your thighs squeeze his hand so tightly, it’s almost painful. You grip his shoulder and tug at his hair as he works you through it. When you finally come down, your breathless, chest heaving.
Jake slowly removes his hand as he kisses you gently. You reach out to stroke him, to give as much pleasure as you were given, but he shakes his head.
“No, beautiful. Don’t worry about me.” He says adjusting himself and fastening his pants.
“But–” You start, confused.
Jake presses his lips to yours and says, “Next time.”
A/n: Please be kind. This is my first time writing smut. I will take constructive criticism but please do it though dm and again please be kind about it.

The next morning, the sound of rain hitting your roof slowly stirs you from sleep. Groggily, you rub the sleep from your eyes and yawn. Rolling over onto your side, you reach out and feel around for your phone. Finally feeling the cold glass of the screen, you lift it and hit the power button. The screen comes to life and temporarily blinds you. Squinting, you look at the time. 7:30 am. Phone still in hand, you flop onto your back and sigh. You’ve only got thirty minutes until you have to be at the store and open for the day. With a whine, you kick off the blankets and get out of bed. Quickly walking toward your bathroom, you open spotify and play your morning playlist. When you reach the bathroom, you slide the phone onto the edge of the sink and head to the shower.
After speeding through your shower, you hastily pull on your favorite pair of boyfriend jeans and a cream color heavy knit pullover. Rushing over to your dresser, you open your sock drawer and grab a thick pair of socks. Closing it, you pull on the socks while scanning your jewelry collection. Your eyes fall on a vintage gold band you’d picked up at an estate sale. It has a salt and pepper diamond set and has vines and flowers carved into the band. Picking it up, you slide it onto your middle finger before putting on the rest of the rings you typically wear, and an onyx cameo necklace your grandmother had given you just before she’d passed.
Checking the time, you see that you only have ten minutes to get to the bookstore. Mentally cursing, you shove your phone in your back pocket and hurry to the living room. Slipping on your Blundstone Chelseas, you reach for your rain jacket and shove your arms into the sleeves. With a huff, you throw your purse over your shoulder and reach for your umbrella. Grabbing at nothing, you realize you’d left it at the store the last time it had rained. Mentally chastising yourself, you pull up your hood and step out of the door. The rain pelts your face and sends a shiver down your spine. Pulling your hood tighter around your face, you close the front door and lock it. With a deep breath to ready yourself before you take off in a jog toward Literary Labyrinth.
As you jog the few blocks to the store, Jake steps outside under the awning. Pulling out a pack of cigarettes, he packs it against the heel of his hand. Opening it, he pulls one out and lifts it to his mouth. Holding it between his lips, he puts the pack back in his pocket and grabs his lighter. Flicking it open and lighting it, he cups the flame. Lighting the cigarette, he takes a long drag. The smoke fills his chest and gives him that all too familiar warmth. Holding that first drag a few seconds longer, he slowly exhales and turns his head.
About a block away, he sees someone running through the rain heading straight toward him. Squinting, he takes another drag and tries to figure out why the blurry figure seems familiar. As they draw closer, it hits him. It’s you. You’re running through the rain with the flimsiest raincoat he’s ever seen.
Tossing the cigarette onto the ground, he stomps it out before putting it in the ashtray beside the stoop. Looking back up at you, he can see you’re nearly soaked through. A sudden wave of concern floods through him. Stepping back inside the coffee shop, he grabs one of the extra umbrellas from the stand and goes back outside. Opening the umbrella, he ducks under it and runs to meet you.
Your eyes are on the ground as you continue your run. Without warning, you collide into an immovable force. Stumbling back, you trip over yourself and begin falling. Flailing your arms, you let out a screech and suddenly you’re caught. Looking up in bewilderment, you see Jake. He has one arm wrapped around your waist keeping you from falling and the other is holding an umbrella above you. Time seems to stand still. You feel your face warm as you hurriedly stand and straighten yourself.
“H-hey! Sorry about barrelling into you. I wasn’t paying enough attention I guess.” You say with a huff meant to be a laugh.
“It wasn’t your fault, I was running to meet you and didn’t stop in time or call out to warn you.” He says. “Are you okay? Didn’t twist an ankle or something?”
This time you do let out a chuckle. “I’m fine, just a bruised ego. Wait, why were you running to meet me?”
“I saw you running and that you didn’t have an umbrella with you, so I came to give you this one.” He says, holding it out.
Shocked by his kindness, your mouth drops. Quickly shutting it, you reach out and take the umbrella. As your hand wraps around the handle your fingers brush against his, sending goose bumps along your arm. Clearing your throat, you smile and say, “Oh wow, that’s so sweet. Thank you.”
Stuffing his hand in his pockets, he nods and says, “No problem.” He looks like he wants to say something more, but decides against it.
“Well, I guess I better get going. Don’t want to be late opening my own store.” You say with a laugh. “Do you want to walk together? So you don’t get as drenched as I am?” No sooner than the words left your mouth did you wish you’d phrased it any other way.
Jake smirks, “Well can’t have that. It takes hours to get this look just right.” He says gesturing to himself. Stepping under the umbrella, he casually takes it back from you and holds it over the two of you as you walk the half block to the coffee shop.
As you reach the stoop of the coffee shop, the two of you step under the awning and Jake asks, “Coming in for a cup of coffee?”
Shaking your head, you say, “Not today, I really do need to get to the store.”
Nodding his head and leaning back on his heels, he says, “Right right. Of course. Well I won’t keep you.” Taking your hand, he wraps it around the umbrella and grins. “By the way, still waiting for your thoughts on Forevermore.”
Taking a step back and chucking, you say “I promise I’ll give you my thoughts as soon as I read the next book. See you later Jake.”
“Can’t wait.” He says with a wave.
As he turns to go inside, you notice the whole right side of his body is soaked. He’d let the umbrella shield all of you and only half of him on the walk here. Your heart flutters at the realization. Feeling heat rise from the tips of your toes to the top of your head, you turn to head to Literary Labyrinth. You take one last glance back at Jake through the window and see him hanging his jacket on the coat rack and smile to yourself.
Walking to the store, you unlock the door and head inside. With a cold chill, you hurriedly shake off your jacket and walk over to the electric fireplace, turning it on. As you begin getting the store ready to open, you decide to leave the overhead lights off and only use the lamps and wall sconces to lean into the rainy, cozy, curl up with a good book kind of day aesthetic.
You open the store with a few seconds to spare and already had a customer waiting for you despite the rain. They bought a few newer titles and one classic. As you sent them on their way, you walk over to the fantasy section and grab the next volume of the Forevermore series.
Walking over to the fireplace, you sit in the chair beside it and crack open the book and began to read. You got through the first two chapters before you decided to message Jake. Picking up your phone from the arm of the chair, you start to type.
“I hate that I’m almost understanding Uthril and his reasons for killing Eldrin. I feel like I’m betraying Delimira.”
A few seconds later, you hear your phone go off. Tapping the message bubble, you read. “He had good reasons for going against Eldrin and his kingdom. Some you won’t even find out about until later in the book. I’m guessing you’re not that far into it since it’s only been a couple of hours since you opened.”
“You’re right, I’m just starting the third chapter. I’m interested to see what reasons you’re talking about. You should just tell me, I don’t mind spoilers.” You type back.
“Absolutely not! I’m shocked you’d even suggest such a thing. *shocked face emoji* Asking for spoilers, unbelievable. I thought you had a better love for art of book reading *solemn face emoji*” He says.
Letting out a laugh, you type back, “I do have a love for the art of book reading! I mean clearly, I own a bookstore. But fine, I’ll just read and find out for myself. *salute emoji*”
“Thatta girl.” He says, quickly followed by, “Still expect updates though.”
You smile and send, “Aye, aye Captain.”
The next few hours are spent going between reading and taking care of customers. Your favorite kind of day. Around two, you realize you’re low on a few books on the display table and write a little note saying you had to step in the back and to ring the bell if you’re needed.
While you’re in the back, you hear the front doorbell ring and call out that you’d be out in just a minute as you’d gotten all the books you needed. As you step out of the back, you hear the bell ring again, signaling that the person had left. Furrowing your brows, you try to see them through the front window, but they’re already gone before you could make it. With a shrug of your shoulders, you go about putting out the books.
When you finish, you head up to the counter to take down the note. As you walk closer to the counter, you notice a cup of coffee sitting on top of the note and a croissant sitting beside it. Reaching out to pick it up, you hear the ding of your phone.
“Sustenance is key, dear reader.” Jake says.
With a smile you pick up the coffee and take a sip, it’s a Spanish Latte. Sitting the cup back down, you type back, “How did you know I hadn’t eaten yet?”
“Just a lucky guess. Plus you didn’t get to have your cup of coffee this morning. Figured you’d be wishing you had by now.”
“Well thank you dear sir. How much do I owe you?”
“Nothing, this ones on me.” He says.
“Awe, thank you! Are you sure though? I don’t mind.”
“Absolutely sure.” He answers. “Actually call it an iou. If it makes you feel better.”
You chuckle and say, “Sounds good to me.”
