Oh I absolutely adore this! I’ve done a bit of studying on the Decans, and it’s a very informative (for me). I may include a section on this in the Astro!Talk:House series!

Let's Talk Decan(ates)

Hello everyone. I am back with this post. I have been wanting to learn more about decans since I learned astrology. I can tell that in a way, astrology Tumblr is starting to die down, so I thought I would help us out real quick. I haven't seen many posts on decans on here.

So...what are decans?

Decans are basically a subdivision of the zodiac signs. Usually, each subdivision lasts about 10 days. Ancient astrologers would use decans to provide a more detailed explanation of their horoscope by using minor planetary influences to each decan.

So...How do you calculate decans?

Simple! All you would have to do is look at the degree and the sign of your placements. Each sign has 3 10 degree subdivisions. For example, let's take the...Libra decan. The rule of thumb goes for all decans that the first 10 degrees are in Libra. The second 10 degrees (from 10-19 degrees) are going to be in Aquarius, and the last 10 degrees (from 20-29 degrees) are in Gemini.

NOTE: The decans are only going to be within the same element of each other, like the aforementioned example. If you're studying a Taurus decan, the next one would be a Virgo decan, then a Capricorn decan. It also goes in astrological order.

So...can you provide more examples?

I got you! We're going to use my chart as an example.

1st Example: 17 degree Virgo sun.

Having my sun in Virgo alone can denote that I am hardworking and I bring order to chaos, but also having a discerning eye. If we look at the decans of Virgo, we notice that the first 10 degrees are purely in Virgo. The second 10 degrees are in Capricorn, and the last 10 degrees are in Taurus. My sun is at 17 degrees, which falls under the second decan. This also means that I have a Capricorn-like layer added to my Virgo energy. If you can read my chart and you know your dominant signs/planets/etc...I am a Saturn dominant and this further confirms that.

So...what does it mean to have a Capricorn decan?

Having a Capricorn decan on my sun specifically, is like being a bit of a Capricorn sun. Think of all the traits of a Capricorn sun--ambitious, hardworking, cultivating patience, etc. That mixed in with my core desire to be of service to myself and others. Makes sense so far?

2nd Example: 28 degree Libra moon.

My moon here is in the last 10 degrees of Libra. If we see what the third sign is that is associated with the 3rd decan, it would be Gemini. So not only do I like to establish harmony and peace within my relationships, I also have Gemini moon traits, such as emphasizing communication, engaging in mercurial activities. I can attest to this because one thing you will see me do, is write in my diary. I ALMOST always bring a book with me or my diary (sometimes both) and that is how I pass my time.

3rd Example: 4 degree Pisces ascendant.

My ascendant is located within the first decan of Pisces. As a reminder, any placements that has 0-10 degrees is going to be in the first decan and will emphasize the traits of that sign, since it's the same sign. Having my ascendant in true Pisces manner, can make me prone to soaking up other people's energies. Truly an energetic sponge. Of course with practice, I can be able to discern whose emotions are mine, and whose aren't.

4th Example: 12 degree Libra Mercury.

Mercury in Libra represents having (or trying to maintain) a balanced perspective. Trying to always be impartial and fair in one's choices. I wish people would understand that Libras can also have an all "black-or-white" thinking pattern, especially if it is placed in the 8th house or even the 10th house. But enough of that. Here my Mercury is placed in the 2nd decan of Libra, which would be Aquarius. So not only am I expressing myself in a Libran way, I also have a touch of Aquarius to it. It's like having an Aquarius mercury...except you're actually attached instead of detached lol. If you're unfamiliar with Aquarius Mercury traits, they can be very innovative and think outside the box. They have an interesting way of communicating and expressing themselves. These people can be very future-oriented in their thinking. If you're a water mercury, I advise you to not really go to an Aquarius mercury for comfort. They are an air sign that is logical. They will tell you what you need to hear.

5th example: 1 degree Scorpio Venus.

Venus is in the first decan of Scorpio. This means that Scorpio traits are expressed when it comes down to it. I am loyal to those that I love, and if anything feels off even a little bit...I will distance myself and keep watch just to monitor the situation. I desire to merge souls with my significant other, as well as my loved ones. I will stick with them through thick and thin, provided they do the same. I will take them under my wing if I have to. I may not have a lot of money but if I am getting it, then like Rico Nasty said in her song "Smack a Bitch": If I'm getting money, then you know we all got a plate.

6th example: 7 degree Virgo Mars.

Having Virgo Mars isn't for the weak. Now...imagine that energy being emphasized. This Mars placement is in the first 10 degrees of the first decan. My Mars placement is a true Virgo Mars in this case. I am analytical, logical, and enjoy performing structured tasks. Organizing and cleaning can provide a catharsis for me but I do not consider myself to be a clean freak. (Of course placement in the chart and aspects matter. I have it in my 7th house so it is debilitated (I think that is the right term) and I can be quite lazy. But I do have the good ol' fashioned intrusive thoughts telling me to do something while resting).

The Zodiacs and Modalities

Concept:

As you get into your astro!studies you’ll come across the modalities and it’ll all click a lot more! But then… you run into more lists. That’s okay though, those adjectives give us words to describe these signs, below we’re gonna discuss how to talk about them.

Fixed: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius

Mutable: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces

We’ve lived so many different lives, done so many different things. No two people experience the same life. Not only that; nothing happens in a vacuum; you are a person in this world and you have to make your own choices. Forget what your chart says about you—what do your actions say about you? The little things and habits you form now are make the person you’ll be several tomorrows now. Is that someone you’re proud of?

The Elements (Triplicity)

Concept:

It seems like the most popular way to identify signs is by their elements. I recently learned that they’re also referred to as the triplicties. At first, I was confused why [with the root word being three and all]… but then I made this list below and it all made sense!

Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

The Triplicities;

The Triplicities follow emotional beats. Each beat contains its own cycle, and once completed the next cycle can mimic the last one or be extremely polarized—for better or worse. Whatever images are invoked when you think of the elemental triplicities, run with it! Think about whether they embrace/surrender to energy, and it might help you understand the signs better! At a later date we’ll discuss more about how this plays out, so I’ll leave it at this for now!

{Final Thoughts}

I always see people talk about how certain sun signs do things, or just a list of generalizations… We’re more than a birth certificate! I want deep dive analyses—not just list of adjectives. I also don’t want to fall into those trappings! So though we aren’t deep diving right now, I vow to explore this more at a later date. I want to get on to the next concept!

Masculine vs Feminine Signs (YANG/YIN)

Concept:

The signs can be traditionally categorized in several different ways! One way gender-coded—masculine and feminine. Another way I’ve seen this conceptualized is Yin/Yang.

Masculine (yang): Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius

Feminine (yin): Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces

Embracing vs Surrendering

When it comes to masculine and feminine, I want to discuss how these two groups interact with different energies/situations and express themselves.

[As followed:]

Embracing; these are the signs that need to externally step into the energies they are presented with. They are the kind that puts things into action—they’re the fire and air signs [not to say that other half doesn’t operate like that; they just go about it in a different matter.] Imagine these energies as bricks: masculine signs weigh bricks to bricks they already have built into their foundation. They break their wall then rebuild to strengthen their original brick layering.

Surrendering; These are the signs that absorb the energies internally [our earth and water signs]. Think of these signs as sponges and the energy the come in contact as liquids they soak up and incorporate into whatever they already hold! This might be why they’re often categorized and described as “sensitive”.

The rest of the Astro!Talk:Signs series will be touching and building up on the concepts we’ve touched in this post; in order to understand theories behind the signs, you have to add up all these components. But that’s just the beginning—because then you get into the abyss that is the natal chart. But once you build a foundational understanding of the signs, the other concepts (planets, houses, aspects) become easier to grasp!

Scorpio Mars here (in the 12th house opposite 6th Taurus Jupiter and Saturn—not conjuncted)… I’d say I love personally juggling self-depreciating and napoleon complex more than a god complex (but I have “hard” aspects to both jupiter and saturn… so it was always gonna be a long road here).

I do believe I can put my mind to whatever I want—but I didn’t to the extent that I am now until recently. Honestly the only thing that’s truly stopped me in my life is me, when I really look back at it. External life and factors don’t really affect me as much as they have others (but we’re all uniquely built and cultivated if astrology has taught us nothing else).

and i feel called out on the creep department cause growing i was more likely to entertain energies I knew were off in an attempt to be “fair and giving others chances” so liiiiike

scorpio mars like to stay low key they aren’t the ones to show all their cards.

They can appear calm on the surface but if u make them feel threatened in any way they won’t hesitate to do something ab how you made them feel.

Most of the time you won’t be able to tell someone has a scorpio mars because they like to hide their mars energy until they need to use it.

There’s always something subtle about them that makes people interested in them

most scorpio mars i know use weed or other drugs to calm their intense energy

women with this placement could’ve been shamed early in life for being sexual, leading them to hide their sexuality or overcompensate by being overly sexual

women with this placement can also attract a lot of creeps and people who just want to use them for sex

men with this placement can tend to be overly controlling and immature over the smallest things. Some i know always want the last word and need to be in control of anything that’s going on around them

They can be really passionate though, only over a few things, they would care about a couple things and forget everything else in the world

They can give their all in a relationship then after act like you don’t exist

men with this placement are the type to have the best sex with u and then ghost u after

scorpio mars people think they can do whatever they put their mind to especially if they have it aspecting jupiter they can have a god complex

i know someone with a scorpio mars who would cut themselves because they got in an argument with their partner

can be raw and straight forward which can make people uncomfortable but some obsessed with them

knew a girl at my school who would get in a lot of fights and everyone would fear her and do whatever she wants

and even stabbed a couple people because they tried her

I know you’re tired of the inaccurate, baseless astrological “memes” and “think pieces” that infest the interwebs.

Especially if you’re like me and decided to become obsessed with the world astrology. I’ve been studying astrology… going on seven years now? I was 18 when I first discovered the wonders of birth [read: natal] charts!

Imagine how the stars were aligning the moment you arrived...

That’s exactly how I think of my birth chart. Something you will learn fast, is I don’t believe the stars control me. I don’t think they control you. I don’t truly believe they could even predict the future. It can theorize it—for sure. To me, astrology is the personification of the stars.

Astrology can be a tool to use to reflect on yourself, who you want to be, a reflection of how you think and feel, and the actions you take (or don’t take) as an extension.

You have to apply the person to the chart—not the chart to the person.

Sometimes people don’t always understand what I mean by this. A random chart means nothing to me. If I don’t know you, I can theorize all I want to; it’s like reading a transit chart without any context. It makes no sense for me to tell you who you are—especially because I can’t control what you do. I cannot live your life or decide things for you. You are a person with the agency of choice, and to allow things outside of yourself to decide things that affect your life? Is actually really dangerous. Would not advise [cause oh boy, the horror story I could tell…].

So for the first Astro!Talks series were gonna redefine some astrological concepts that categorize the signs so we can better understand our charts. I want to give us better understanding of these concepts so I can better help you help me to [help me.]!
