#startale lore (interpretations)

i think about this dialogue A LOT. it’s that one dialogue that i just can’t stop thinking about.

i believe it’s a perfect example of what i interpret (and therefore is canon in this alternate universe) chara’s existence was like in-between their death and being “awakened” by the human.

chara loves buttercups. in other words, in my interpretation, “the golden flowers.” it’s a representation of freedom and death. love and pain. the village it abandonded and the home they found. it is very dear to it. and like asriel, who became flowey, chara also became tied to the golden flowers. it was the closest thing they had to “a physical form,” which is very depressing. unlike flowey, it was stuck in a comatose condition, unable to move (outside of the flowers simply growing). paralyzed, forced to watch as the home and family it cared so deeply for, slowly crumbled to pieces.

to add to the pain… in startale: the final contender, startale!chara’s ghost form is surrounded by buttercups. and in the lore, the buttercups are connected to chara’s soul and emotions. the more negative emotions and overwhelmed chara feels, the more flowers appear until most of their body is covered.

in other words, the huge amount that the buttercups have grown in the underground is a representation of the 100+ years of chara’s agony. anyways, another reason one of startale!chara’s biggest triggers will be silence and inaction…

i want to make a small (art and dialogue) video about this one day, and hopefully explore it in my comic.
