SIEGEOWEEN 2022 DAY 2
As soon as I read the first few paragraphs, I am mesmerised with how you describe the sceneries. I can already imagine the surroundings like a movie film, and the general tone of this fic has me seeing of darker contrast with warm undertone? I enjoy the intricate details of Caveira’s luscious hair and yes, it is one of her many charming points. I loved them being a pair of love birds, Caveira’s thoughtfulness and how Doc appreciates every little thing they do together. This is a cute fic, a soul’s worth to pay for ;)

The door slammed shut, shattering the reverie of thoughts consuming him. When the world blinked back into focus, he found Taina staring. Eyes narrowed. Lips scrunched into some undecipherable expression.
“Did you look?”
“Non!”
Her eyes slipped into even thinner slits before rolling at him—an ounce of disbelief and a dash of sarcasm. No words were spoken though. She merely hunched forward, unzipped the bag, and began rummaging. And even then—he kept his eyes on anything else except what may lay beyond the lid and within the shell. He heard crinkles. And the swishing of fabrics. All of which only confused him further. One long string of navy fabric—a dress, he assumed—unravelled in her hand. Not even uttering a single other word, she draped the dress over her lap and quickly yanked the black t-shirt up and over her head, revealing all: the carved muscles of her abdomen, her bare, bronzed skin, the black bra clinging to her chest, and all of it summoned a scarlet blush to his cheeks.
Gustave hacked an awful cough to clear his throat, and he stared out the driver’s side window instead. “This feels ridiculous.”
“How so?”
“I feel like I’m sixteen again and sneaking out in the middle of a school night with—”
“Bad girls?” she cut in, finishing the sentence for him.
When he looked over, Taina was already barefoot, having kicked off her canvas flats, and shucking off her pants. And, most noticeably, a devious grin had been plastered in place upon her pink-stained lips. Dainty wind-whisked brown hairs fringed around her face, softly skating against her cheek as she stared, awaiting a response. A rebuttal, a concurrence. Anything.
“With anyone,” he said, chuckling. “Even sneaking out with friends was a daring adventure back then.”
“Huh.”
Taina slipped her head through the neckline and then tugged the rest of the dress down to settle perfectly against her curves. Shuffling, adjusting. One hand braced against the dashboard as she eased up. Audible, bare thighs separated from the leather seat. Tucking the bottom of the dress underneath her, she finally sat back down.
“But you’re having fun, right?”
Gustave shot her a quick wink. “Always.”
A brief nod, and she suddenly hunched back over. Hand once again fishing around, a cacophony of high pitched crackles fluttered through his ear, screeching in them. She withdrew something large and offered it out to him so fast it was merely a blur.
Inches from his face—a large and full bouquet of deep pink roses, stargazer lilies, and white carnations. Beautiful. The bright, lovely colours beamed in his eyes while the floral scent filled his nose. Petals, sprouting out and curling in underneath. Stamens protruded peppered with bright orange pollen, its green stigma shooting up and out from the center. Dainty greenery nearly pawed at his cheek as Taina held the bouquet out to him, but shock paralyzed him. It turned his muscles into cement, and he couldn’t move. So when he didn’t, Taina—unmoved—placed the flowers in his lap instead. Then, lunging forward, she crashed her lips upon his cheek in a rough but precious kiss.
“Joyeux anniversaire!”
It’s Doc’s birthday, and everybody has their own plans in mind. I really wish this was more edited, but it’s not because it’s one of the few one shots that actually has a deadline.

Wrist rotating, her palm flattened against his. Their fingers slipped through one another, half knitted together, and half settled between one another. Their hands looked the same. Strong and bronzed and littered with tiny barely visible scars that appeared as only a powdering of dark skin. She supposed there was truth in the matter, but where his could heal, hers could do so little. Touch, feel. At rare times they could be soft and tentative, but they mastered in the art of destruction.
One could never tell just by looking.
Yet Gustave, she knew, understood exactly what to expect from them, and so when she wrapped her left hand around his wrist, he surrendered all control. She cradled his left arm in hers; the other hand then dunked back into the water. Cutting through a mound of foamy bubbles, plunging into the heat. Fingers curling in, she captured water in her palm. That hand then hovered over the inside of Gustave’s forearm. Droplets drizzled down between her digits. Some coursed down his skin in tiny, diverging rivulets; some beaded in place between hairs. Perfectly rounded. Capturing fragments of light and colour and reflecting them back. One single black nail drew invisible lines between each one, rupturing them so they collapsed in, and she watched them gravitate down the blazed trails of other dribbles. Her index finger followed one—skating down the slope of his bicep and crossing over a vibrant streak of colour buried under the skin, deep within his flesh.
“Your veins are so green.”
Behind her, Gustave twitched in surprise at her voice. “Hm?”
“Your veins are very green. Mine are more blue.”
“Really?”
He craned his head and peered down at her finger still dancing over his skin. Every exhale shot down her bare shoulder and over her chest. Nodding, she dragged her finger back up the length of his arm while following that green path. “What is this called?”
“It’s called the Cephalic vein.”
Gustave wriggled his arm free of her grasp. One quick shift and he had shaken her hand away; instead, his middle finger settled upon the side of her shoulder. Dragging. Tracing one long crooked line from her shoulder down the length of her inner arm to the side of her wrist by her thumb. More tingles flooded her flesh, making her blood fizzle.
“It runs all the way down your arm, and this one,” Gustave said, dropping his hand and prodding at the underside of her bicep instead, “is the Basilica vein.”
Eyes fluttering shut, Taina gnawed on her own lip as Gustave’s finger drew up all the way again. A slight brush against her armpit, and she quivered. Reflexes, set ablaze. That arm reeled from his touch. A chuckle rattled his chest and vibrated into her spine. Taina couldn’t help but laugh too. She nestled back against him once more. Relaxing: arms sinking back down into the water, head propping against his shoulder. He melted deeper into her too, exploratory hand moving across her torso until he could reach over to her arm still rattling with pins and needles. Gustave pointed to the blue-green vein near the inner elbow.
Snuggled in as close as possible, his exhale sent errant chestnut brown hairs fluttering against her cheek. “The two connect around here—the median cubital.”
Taina hummed in vague rumination over the term she knew she’d never, ever remember. Still, a fascination sunk its claws in. She straightened her left arm, resting it along the edge of the tub and nearly hyperextending her arm just to press the blue-greenish vein against the surface of her bronze skin. “What else?”
After a long day of exploring and shopping in Paris on her own, Taina decides to unwind with a long, hot bath. Gustave decides to join and unwinds in his own way by giving her a crash course on the many veins within the human body.

Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Gustave flinched—every single muscle wrenching under his itching flesh—and the forceps in his hands fell back down into the container of water he stood over beside the sink. Water splashed over the rim; droplets splattered in every direction: the counter, the back wall, his uniform. Up his chest, along both sleeves. A growl balled within the back of his throat.
“What do you need?”
The words blurted out with a dose of venom and bitterness. Not even bothering to wait for a response, he dunked his left hand back into the container of soaking surgical instruments and snatched the forceps back up.
“It’s me.”
“Oh.” A fire-hot streak of phantom tingles shot down the length of his spine on Taina’s low and even voice. Finally. His mind, already more at ease at the precipice of her presence. “Come in then.”
The door clicked once, and then a soft thud followed. He heard no footsteps and almost no audible movements—but then, he had learned long ago to never expect them from her. Silence was her speciality. And only in certain circumstances did she remove herself from such silence.
“Are you okay?”
Her voice was closer than anticipated. Not directly behind him, but noticeable steps away from the door.
Gustave plunged his gloved hand into the sink and rummaged along the bottom. Groping around in search for the scrubber brush while the other hand held the forceps still dripping solution into the sloshing sink. “Jordan ripped open his God damn stitches. Even though I told him to rest his arm. Instead he decided to mess around with weights because nobody wants to listen to me,” he said, ranting. The words, spewing out of his mouth like a purge. Finding the scrub brush in the sink, he ran it back and forth over the metal object, grinding every bristle into every nook and cranny. “Eliza has been avoiding me all week for blood samples. I’ve approached her about it three separate times, and she keeps telling me she’s too busy. Like we aren’t all busy! I have a thesis I need to peer review for someone as a favour that I can’t get to because I’m too busy chasing people around for a two minute blood test.”
Out of breath, he had to pause. Starving for air. He tossed aside the forceps onto the other side of the counter for drying.
In the ebb of quietness, he heard Taina quietly hiss, “Eliza’s a bitch.”
His lips pursed in a desperate attempt to choke out a near laugh in spite of himself and his foul mood.
Some days are indifferent; some days are infuriatingly annoying. For Cav it's the former, and for Doc it is only the latter. But any decent day can take a turn for the worst the same as any bad day can provide a sparkle of hope in the most mundane of ways.
