Amazing AMAZING project by @voguetaiwan on overconsumption and waste in fashion - these are such poetic and impressive pictures!
Cover story 'Never enough' - A Song About Excessive Consumption
Styled by @chenyu
Photographed by @zhonglin
Model @zoefang dressed in a 30-kilogram gown made from recycled garments and reusable farm soil.
As Sun Yi, editor-in-chief of Vogue Taiwan, said, "Overconsumption itself and its impact on the earth have caused environmental degradation, resource depletion, ecosystem destruction, and accelerated climate change. This idea, through the perspective of our long-term photography partner Zhong Ling, has given rise to a new prediction about future habitats: in a world where the land is limited due to rising sea water, we have become seasonal nomads and constantly migrate due to unpredictable weather. The animals and plants we once relied on for survival have disappeared, and when the soil cannot give birth to life, we have to cultivate green plants on our bodies, and we begin to carry our own home like snails. When people's desires are carefully packaged, the misplaced illusions generated by the connection between the object and happiness are deeply bound, and excessive consumption has become a kind of civilization disease, which is also like a sleep elelegy, which finally allows us to say goodbye to the beloved environment. In the scene full of smog, the girl carried the difficulties of a snail-like home. The excess of clothes on her body was mixed with dirt, almost crushing her body. Looking around, too many images have become a visual obstacle, making it impossible to distinguish between real and illusory. When the slow price of fast fashion is ignored by us, when the wardrobe is full but still feels there is no choice, when the head of the family is wrapped and filled, the heart still feels empty, the torrent of material becomes the wasteland of the soul, and the only thing that can really nourish the soul is to make a conscious choice."

Making repair a mainstream -
SOJO : fashion needs a new fit.
Last week, I explored a fascinating startup based in London and founded by Josephine Philips.
The mission of Sojo is to make garments alterations and repairs accessible to everyone, promoting a more conscious approach to fashion.
In other words, restoring clothes offers a way to imagine a second life for our garments, allowing them to change and grow with us.
It’s a creative and straightforward idea to inspire people to adopt a different mindset and make a step forward from the “make-use-waste” default approach of fashion.
We express ourselves and our style through clothes (and accessories!). They’re part of us, and definitly our memories and culture.
So my question is : why too often it seems that we have so much trouble taking care of them?

📢 Unlocking the power of scrolling! A few days ago I’ve discovered an incredible project by chance on instagram - These images campaign (which I absolutely ADORE) were shot for the ‘Cotton, Our Pride’ project, promoted by the Ethical Fashion Initiative - In celebration of ‘World Cotton Day’, 10 African designers were invited to create unique pieces from the fabrics produced by the EFI’s network in Benin, Burkina Faso and Mali. Each designer was supported by the EFI at every stage of the process, from the choice of fabrics to the finalization of the collections - this approach has strengthened a deep connection between hashtag#designers and hashtag#artisans, elevating both hashtag#craft and hashtag#culture. Sustainability is inclusive, human-centered, and deeply creative. But first, let me say: SUSTAINABILITY IS COOOL 🔥

Reju is a material regeneration company -
Their vision is to build a system where textile waste doesn’t exist.
How are they trying to do this? Building a network of partners to develop a new textile system where textile is not waste but it can be infinitely recirculeted.
They designed a particular high performance polyester made from waste textile, their goal is a 100% traceability supply chain and a less carbon emission process (compared to a virgin material).
The goal is the creation of a more durable fabric for a longer lasting garment.

‘I’m not trying to do something different, I’m trying to do the same thing in a different way.’ Vivienne Westwood
BUY LESS, CHOOSE WELL, MAKE IT LAST.
Vivienne Westwood wasn’t just a designer - she was a revolutionary mind, an activist and a bold, powerful woman.
Her brand and her voice became a #manifesto for how climate change and culture are connected. She always said: “The first thing we can do is inform ourselves, because all we’ve got is public opinion. And the most important thing is to fight for something”.
#Sustainability in fashion has to be an intentional act and a conscious choice into both vision and strategy.
Vivienne Westwood’s fearless creativity and authenticity remain a daily source of inspiration for me."

Helen Kirkum is a pioneer of a unique approach to sneakers by deconstructing and reassembling them in innovative ways. Her work focused on material manipulation, creatively repurposing discarded elements to enrich and personalize each shoe. The final result was incredible: the shoes were still functional and they also has a completely transformed aesthetics. Helen turned what many considered waste into something truly original. She was absolutely one of my earliest inspiration on UPCYCLING ::: 👟♻️✂️

Alexander McQueen ss99 show as inspiration
Exploring the connections between technology and fashion -
which could be the role of AI into fashion sustainability system?
help to optimize the process
accelerate and facilitate human work
simulation
Drones are able to check warehouse leftover materials and take inventory by themselves. They also check any damages on stock and communicate them directly to operator.
The robot supports operators: it substitute the action but not the intention of the human. Operators can have free hands and make other activities in the meanwhile (this is an example of how augmented-reality can improve the working reality).
Also, thanks to the virtual viewer, operator can drive the arms and the movements of the robot.
Finally, it is now possible to simulate real materials and texture: through the RDF technology we can see in real time the many possibilities of a dress look like.
So processes and products could really become more sustainable thank to technology. On the other hand, technology can be really considered a great tool for creativity and design!

Kurt Schwitters, Picture of Spatial Growth - Picture with two small dogs, 1920-39 (Oil paint, wood, paper, cardboard and china on board)
This is a type of mixed-media work known as 'Merz', a term Schwitters coined in 1919 to describe 'the combination for artistic purposes of all conceivable materials'. According to this principle, found objects contain the same aesthetic potential as tubes of paint. Schwitters started this assemblage of discarded rubbish and printed papers in Germany in 1920. Seventeen years later he brought it with him to Norway, having escaped from Nazi Germany. There he added Norwegian material: theatre tickets, recipts, newspaper cuttings, scraps of lace, and a box with two china dogs. The different layers of collage reflect the artist's journey into exile.
Focus on collage: combining everyday objects and materials became a new technique for twentieth-century artists.
More than a century ago, artists began to use cut-up newspapers and pieces of wallpaper in their compositions. This technique brought recognisable pieces of everyday life into artworks.
Artists such Man Ray and Joan Mirò expanded this technique into three dimensions. They were attracted by the potential of combining discarded objects to create new forms. Their work draws on the surrealist idea that unexpected combinations can have an unsettling power. This often relates to violence or sexuality but is sometimes humorous too.
Subsequent generations of artists have brought images and objects together in new ways. Some continue to use this approach to create moments of poetic surprise. For others, collage is a way to analyse the images in advertising and mass media that surround us.

Collaboration with @vogue ! 🔥
In December 2020, I transformed the PVC displays of the Photo Vogue Festival into bags. These big panels were used as support for the photography exhibition that was organised outdoor due the pandemic.
This project took part of @camera60studio upcycling programme.
During the camera60studio era, all the materials we have transformed into bags were real waste. Everything was part of our everyday life.
For me sustainability means transformation and creativity – only by changing our point of view, we can transform something useless into a new meaningful object. 🔥

Thom Browne Couture Fall Winter 2024 Paris
Collection focused on layers and craftsmanship - Thom Browne paraded mostly beige muslin toiles — usually the first prototype — as the final garments.
“A work-in-progress for the whole show,” Browne said.
Browne demonstrated the extent of fabric manipulation and capabilities beyond the imagination. Browne subverts the process of construction by supplanting the pattern as the end result.
