It Has Begun

I can’t get pics, because they’re up way too high in the trees, but the pair of scrub jays who are my landlords have begun taking their shrieking fledglings out into the world. My house is built on their training ground. I’m ready for the call. Cats? MOVE ALONG. Plentiful water sources? READY. Guard chickens & geese to watch for hawks? DONE. Grapes? DEVELOPING.

I love my bird landlords. So much better than the human kind.

What's the difference between the words teaghlach, muintir agus clann?? Don't they all translate to "family" ? 🤔

Well, not exactly 🤷. Now, the explanations I've made in this video aren't hard and fast, 100% rules of use - there is "overlap" between them - but I want to portray the difference in thought process between Irish and English, and the history that belongs to each word 😁.

Teaghlach

This word comes from the word "teach" (house) and can be literally translated to "household" - the whole population of one house; be that three generations living in one small dwelling, as most Gaels and Irish people lived throughout history, or even eight people living in the one apartment, as is more common nowadays.

Muintir

The people from whom you came - either your ancestors, your relatives (Muintir Uí Shé - Ó Sé Family, Muintir Uí Rabhartaigh - Ó Rabhartaigh Family) or your local community (Muintir Chonamara - People from Connemara, Muintir Chorcaí - Corkpeople), but it can also be used to describe communities you are a part of: (Muintir imeartha peile - footballers, Muintir LADT7 - LGBTQ+ people).

So now you know 🙌 Tá's agat anois é!

What can we learn form beavers? 🦫

Andrew Millison is one of the most renowned permaculture instructors out there, his videos are followed and loved by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. He'd already asked for permission to use our maps in his video How (and why) to find your watershed?, and a few weeks ago contacted us again looking for a North American river map.

His videos are always highly informative and easy to digest, we cannot recommend them enough for those who'd like to learn about soil regeneration, sustainable farming, water management and the like. His newest video about beavers and their role in the ecosystem should be a must-watch for all politicians and lawmakers worldwide: turns out these furry animals could teach us how to heal our lands and mitigate the effects of climate change all over the world.

I got the pink, brown and white oysters fruiting and boy have they been well received by our neighbors. Next up is inoculating more grains with king oyster, lion’s mane,maitake and chicken of the woods. Definitely don’t have the set up yet for large scale production but the learning process has been fun and very fruitful so far.
