I just saw someone on tiktok say writing fanfiction is basically just playing with dolls….i can’t get that out of my head. We’re literally just playing with dolls in our heads and putting it on paper 😭😭😭

WIP Wednesday

I think that’s a thing right?

Working on a standalone/one shot thing. That can also be read as a prequel to Lavender, but it won’t be necessary to have read either to understand the other. Currently it’s only James dying on the shale…I hope they behave and get to the comfort but of Hurt/Comfort soon!!

Francis shakes. James had heard that both Francis and James Ross had suffered in that way after their Antarctic expedition, but he’s grown to find this new sober Francis so unerringly steady on their walk out that it still manages to take him by surprise when his hand is held by one that trembles through the strong grip. Francis helps with propping him upright, it helps when they try to get him to drink, to eat what meagre offerings they have, he craves the painkillers now. James is acutely aware when they are running out, no clock is needed when the shards of glass that seem to make up his joints are screaming again. Even though his hands flutter, Francis’ body supports James’ weight like the oak he and his brother used to climb when they were small. Propped safely and securely in the branches, they felt no fear, and it’s the same for James now. When Francis touches him, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, he feels safe.

James takes in a deep gulp of air, a man drowning on dry land, as Francis lowers him back into his cot, assuming he has fallen into that darkness that passes for sleep these days. Francis tucks the blankets about him gently, mindful of not causing any extra pain, before taking James’ hand again.

“Christ James. What…” his voice catches, and James strains to hear against the swirl of blackness in his mind, tries to focus on the feeling of Francis hands as they twitch around his own, “You cannot leave me hmm lad? Please? Christ.”
