"i dont like jason grace because he's boring" is the most evil statement because a. THATS THE POINT and b. thats EXACTLY what makes him NOT boring.
camp jupiter is BUILT to make children into machines. work as a machine, work with the group to be a machine. or, be spare parts. it is rigid. it is unforgiving. it is built to suppress individuality. the MOST autonomy jason grace got was joining the lower end of the cohorts of the legion, was a failing petition against a traditional board.
jason grace grew up in camp jupiter. not like hazel, frank, percy, nico, etc., who were only there for a year or two at MOST. he grew up there. if i had to guess, i would say age 5 through age 15-- roughly a decade. everything he learned there is going to be DRILLED into him.
yes, he is going to seem boring.
the whole POINT of it is so he can have his character arc of "i dont really want to follow the rules..?" that he doesn't want to be praetor, he just wants to be a normal kid at camp half-blood and live with piper and leo. and thats what MAKES him a character that ISNT boring.

Thinking about how Glinda never really hated that hat. She actually really loved it. It was dear to her. Her granny made it for her and probably played pretend with her, making Glinda’s dreams of becoming a sorceress come true. Glinda was just embarrassed when Pfannee and Shen Shen found it, so she pretended to hate it.
Maybe when she said she didn’t hate anyone that much to give it away, she really meant she didn’t love anyone that much— she didn’t trust anyone to understand how she could love a hat so hideous.
Maybe she knew Elphaba would understand. Maybe she knew Elphaba would take care of it.
And maybe Elphaba proved her right. And now, Glinda gets to admire as the most fearless person she has ever met cherishes her hat as dearly as she did.

am i the only one who thinks that elphaba's promise was cut for good reason??????
i love the scene sm but tonally it's off considering what happens next at the train station. it unloads insecurities that elphie and glinda have that are more appropriately addressed and explored in part 2. we do not have time to cover all this ground in this first movie 😭
and the dialogue,, again i love the openness and vulnerability but it's rly blunt. i like the final cut of the movie where moments are up to viewers' interpretations bc everything that glinda and elphie talk about can still be seen in the movie but through their actions and the editing ((ex. glinda being insecure over being left behind shown through the shots of her waking up in between the fiyero and elphie forest scene)). it's fun discovering the nuances in ari and cynthia's performances,, elphaba's promise also has that going on but it does spell out things too obviously.
i also think the audience doesn't need to hear elphaba make that promise ???? her actions later speak louder than words,, and it's also nice that we don't have to go back to that promise to explain elphie wanting glinda to come with her at the end. it's not just bc of a promise that elphaba wants glinda to come with her,, it's bc glinda is her best and only friend and she still desires companionship. she doesn't want to lose her. we don't need a verbal promise to understand that.

hmmmmm not to be back on my jason grace agenda but something about percy, thalia, and nico facing iapetus and barely winning. (between titans curse & battle of the labyrinth, setting percy’s age at 14-15). and jason defeating krios, alone. hand-to-hand combat, aged 15. something about how in the house of hades we even hear that iapetus is, in fact, weaker than krios. this guy is so metal actually

it's 2024 and i still think about hsmtmts and all the wasted potential bc it could have actually been a good show...

why does nobody talk about how horrible hsmtmts was in writing its main female characters lol,, and yeah,, both of them: nini and gina
like first, they're actually decent people in spite of their flaws or they have great development and come out better people,, but then when it comes to their relationships, suddenly they're somewhat aggressive and overly insecure. being insecure is normal,, being angry at your partner when they do smth stupid is normal,, but when the show portrayed it,, it was over the top for the sake of drama? for no??? reason???
like nini gaslighting ricky for being honest with his feelings when she was the one who told him to tell the truth. gina storming out and telling ej that maybe the old, worse version of him, is the real him in front of everyone, despite knowing he's highly insecure about his past. and the show sells it like we're supposed to clap and root for these "girlbosses".
don't get me wrong,, ricky and ej were weird too at some point,, actually all the characters were written badly by the end. it's rly frustrating when there was so much potential and the writers flopped towards the end of season 2 and never recovered.

percy's fierce loyalty is so intereting,, bc it's his fatal flaw for a reason - it makes him insanely reliable and good to be around but also,, only if you're his close friend.
sure he's obviously passionate enough to protect both camp half-blood and camp jupiter bc he considers those two places home,, but the sentiment comes from a love for those places in general. that doesn't necessarily mean he cares deeply about every single person there on a personal level.
both calypso and bob the titan were completely forgotten by percy even though they helped him immensely. and bc he forgot about them,, characters like leo and nico/will end up picking up where he left off. and the funny thing is,, percy will feel vaguely bad about it,, but ultimately,, it doesn't impact him in the long run.
this trait of his makes him pretty biased and admittedly close-minded,, unable to see the big picture//the greater responsibility in certain situations,, and i like how rick shows this twist in loyalty and how it makes percy imperfect

okay so i love you i'm sorry by gracie abrams is totally about jason and piper from piper's pov. HERE'S WHY,, it's a long one lol
"I told the truth, oh, but you didn't like it, you went home." // "That's just the way life goes, I like to slam doors closed. Trust me, I know it's always about me."
piper is the one who broke up with jason,, and from the burning maze, we know she saw it as an inevitable event. internally, she has been struggling with figuring out who she is outside the perils of demigod life,, and if she's living the life she wants or the one hera/aphrodite wanted for her. basically, she's dealing with the confusion and exhaustion as a result of all the life-changing events of hoo.
while i have comments about the way rick wrote and explained this break-up (again,, topic for another day),, it's clear that piper needed time away from everything to deal with her turmoil, and it's this that drives her to end things with jason. she needed to search for clarity, and she couldn't with him around when his presence in her life only added to her confusion. so she slammed the door closed and thought that it was for the best, and i can imagine jason responding as maturely as he could while still showing signs of heartbreak. all piper could do was let it happen.
"Thankful you don't send someone to kill me."
piper being absolutely relieved and guilty about the way jason responded to her decision 😭
"Two summers from now, we'll have been talking, but not all that often, we're cool now." // "Wistfully lean out my window and watch the sun set on the lake. I might not feel real, but it's okay."
these lyrics capture the kind of relationship piper and jason had - because romantic drama aside,, piper considers him to be her best friend ("more than annabeth"), and even when they were on shaky terms,, they were still able to communicate and understand each other well as noted by apollo. so yeah,, they'd definitely continue being friends even after a break-up. and it's nice and weird and comforting all at once. because the old piper wouldn't have expected things to happen this way,, but the present piper is glad that they can still be in each other's lives.
if only they had enough time to work things out though. because here comes the tragic part 😭
"You were the best but you were the worst, as sick as it sounds, I loved you first. I was a dick, it is what it is, a habit to kick, the age-old curse."
no bc in my head,, this whole bridge is piper's thought process as she deals with losing jason post-burning maze.
he was the best - literally, not only one of the most powerful and reliable demigods, but also the most supportive boyfriend she could ask for - but also the worst,, bc sometimes she felt like she didn't know him,, sometimes he was distant and too inside his own head,, sometimes she wasn't sure if they were meant to be together or not,, and that uncertainty and doubt nagged at her, and it's exactly why she breaks up with him later. but was it really the right decision, or did she let her insecurities control her? and if the latter was true,, then she broke both of their hearts for nothing,, which ultimately led to their strained relationship, and they would neve have full closure bc of what caligula did.
in piper's head,, she might start to think that she made a mess that didn't have to happen,, and the crazy part is she let it happen even though she was the one who loved him and had feelings for him first,, whether they started as an illusion or not.
so how could she possibly let all this happen? we know piper has struggled with a low self esteem since before, and she might look back to past actions that were rash in retrospect,, like stealing cars to get her father's attention. so piper might mistakenly spiral into thinking that everything is her fault bc she was lacking as a person,, and that bc she didn't beat her age-old habits, they haunted her like a curse.
"I tend to laugh whenever I'm sad, I stare at the crash, it actually works. Making amends, this shit never ends, I'm wrong again, wrong again."
piper tried to accept the break-up and losing jason as best as she could. she tried to play down the emotional weight of the break-up in the burning maze bc she felt as though she thought it through,, and at the end of toa, she's obviously trying to move on. these methods seem to work for her on the outside,, but that doesn't mean the grief and confusion has gone away.
the pain and the memories might keep coming back,, and piper might have to grapple with the possibility that she was wrong this whole time, again leading her to believe it was all her fault. in short,, she's confused and devasted and has no idea what the truth is anymore (which is why a book fleshing out her and leo's grief would be SO good).
"I wanna speak in code, hope that I don't, won't make it about me." // "I love you, I'm sorry."
the last chorus of the song beautifully reflects piper's confusion and longing, wishing that maybe she did things a little differently, wishing that maybe she and jason had a different ending.
but the thing is, in spite of all that happened and the confusion she's facing now,, the one thing that never changed was that she loved him, and it's both because of this and in spite of this that she did what she had done, and why she's feeling all these mixed emotions now.
"i love you, i'm sorry" is so powerful coming from piper considering the first time she told him 'i love you' in mark of athena,, and also bc of the whole i'm sorry part. she's sorry about breaking his heart. sorry if she ever made him doubt himself, if he was good enough, if it was his fault. sorry about never properly reconciling. sorry about not being enough to save him. sorry about being unable to say goodbye. sorry about never seeing him one last time.

idk but piper and jason being a tragic love story makes me love them even more lmao
like can we talk about i miss you, i'm sorry by gracie abrams being about them from jason's pov???? 😭
HEAR ME OUT
"Do you remember happy together? I do, don't you? Then all of a sudden, you're sick to your stomach. Is that still true?"
piper broke up with him,, and while he's the most polite and understanding boy ever,, he's not invincible. he can't help what he feels,, even if he thinks/knows that piper's decision might have been for the best (or the logical choice,, which is interesting but a different topic for another day).
the burning maze doesn't go deep into it,, but he's clearly heartbroken. "the truth was enough to break jason grace",, to me,, means a lot of things, one of them being the end of his relationship with piper. part of him accepts it,, but another part of him is miserable because of it.
"Thought you'd hate me, but instead you called and said, "I miss you". I caught it." // "I don't wanna go, think I'll make it worse."
we know that post-breakup,, they had a hard time working together, yet still contacted each other especially for the quest in the maze before apollo showed up. plus,, mellie mistakenly thought the breakup was something to blame on jason specifically.
it was all very awkward and confusing. even if piper was the one to end it,, we know she still has conflicted feelings towards him, and he likely felt that, which made him unsure where they stood. but like the gentleman he is,, he let her be despite whatever desires/longings he had himself.
"Nothing happened in the way I wanted, every corner of this house is haunted. And I know you said that we're not talking, but I miss you, I'm sorry."
i don't even need to explain how much jason loved piper and thought they were going to grow old together 😭 she has always been his safe space too,, someone he could truly be himself and vulnerable around,, so losing the person he knew best/cared for most must have been devastating.
anyways it's crazy bc i'm convinced i love you, i'm sorry is about them too but from piper's pov,, but i'll save that for another day lol

No one talks enough about the fact Jason was stabbed straight through the chest, like the sword went all the way through him and the wound started smoking, then it took multiple minutes I’m assuming to get him help and even then no one on that boat had any real medical experience, and then not even a few weeks later he dove into the ocean headfirst in the middle of a storm to help Percy with no real knowledge that he’d be able to 1. Breathe, and 2. Swim??? Like dude you are heavily injured, can not breathe under water, probably can’t move your arms without tugging at the HOLE ALL THE WAY THROUGH HIS CHEST CAVITY, and he STILL saved Percy’s life and had a heart to heart with him at the bottom of the ocean.
Get this guy a fucking award

[[repost from my reblog bc i'm definitely reblogging this specific parallel in the future lmao]]
no bc let's talk about percy going,, "i'm sally jackson's son!" in the tv show vs. jason in blood of olympus when he sees the mania of his mother and he tells her, "i'm a child of greece and rome. i'm no child of yours."
percy has always been grounded in the love of his mother who taught him to choose his own path and stay true to himself. meanwhile, beryl literally abandoned jason to the wolves. not only did he have to fend for himself at three years old,, he also soon learned that he was the son of jupiter, meaning he was meant for greatness. from the moment his name was given out of an obligation to please hera,, his character was destined to believe that his path was chosen for him. it's why he struggles with his identity, and who he is vs. who he's expected to be.
the saddest part?
just when he was breaking free and started doing things for himself,, he gets himself killed for the sake of the greater good. saving piper's life. helping apollo on his quest to free the oracles. he died a hero's death, unable to escape the prophecy that seems set up for him from the very beginning.

people going "Jason and Percy are just the Greek and Roman versions of eachother." and reducing their character dynamic simply to that have it ALL wrong. Percy and Jason are like yin and yang, they couldn't be any more different from eachother than they already are.
Percy tends to be more carefree and less uptight because, even though he's been through a lot, in the end of the day, he has more people to lean on, than the people expecting him to lead all the time. But Jason? He has more people expecting him to lead, than people whom he can lean on.
Percy is the embodiment of everything that could go successful in a Hero, his fate was sealed the moment Sally named him Perseus, because he was one of the Greek heros who had a happy ending. Percy's mother lovingly got to choose his name sentimentally to protect his son. The name Perseus had provided Percy more luck to dodge a gruesome fate.
Jason is the embodiment of everything that could go wrong in a hero, despite him doing everything he could. Jason's name was the first biggest tragedy. His mother was forced to name him after a hero with a bad ending because his father's wife got jealous. Beryl Grace had unwillingly named him. And Zeus had done nothing to prevent it. That amount of negativity surrounding his birth, was enough to seal his tragic fate.
Percy's mother was a brave protector, willing to go through years of abuse and sacrifice her adult years to shield her son. She even humbly refused Poseidon's lavish offer to build her a castle under the sea. So much so that even after their split, Poseidon still regards Sally as "the queen amongst all mortal women"
Jason's mother was a cowardly narcissist, willing to sacrifice her son to wolves if it meant that she could be free of burden. In contrast to Sally's refusal for Poseidon to build the castle, beryl BEGS Zeus to marry her so she could be the queen of all gods. Now all Zeus has of beryl are bitter memories.
Sally Jackson could proudly speak of Poseidon to Percy, even going "you look so much like your father" in an endearing way.
But all the fragment of beryl Grace could do was to complain about how Zeus had abandoned her, and that he prevented her from seeing jason. Ultimately wanting to wipe the blame out of herself.
Percy was born to live, Jason was born to die. That's how it always was, simply because of their external fates.
But you know what they both have in common? They were always just little boys, with a burning desire to live life to the fullest.

weird we've never seen percy, annabeth, jason, piper, leo, and nico at camp half-blood at the same time lmao
ik the timeline of events makes it hard for that to happen,, especially including leo,, but why haven't we heard more of all the fun stuff that happens when most of these kids are at camp together lol
like the whole camp eating popcorn as they watch percy and jason have their daily competitions,, annabeth and piper having secret sleepovers,, jason forcing nico to socialize,, etc. etc.

no bc i know jiper isn't the most popular ship in the fandom,, but personally?? i have a soft spot for them.
they understood each other more than anyone else. they were both outwardly perfect individuals - piper with her natural beauty, daughter of a movie star, and jason with all his achievements and abilities, being the son of jupiter - yet inside, they were deeply unhappy because they felt like they were always pretending, that nobody knew who they really were or bothered to because people only saw their "perfection". they both hated that kind of attention, and the expectations that came along with it.
but when they got to know each other, they were able to see through the other's pretenses. jason saw and admired the strength in piper before she even knew it existed. piper, while swayed by fake memories at first and thought that he really was perfect all the time (especially in tlh), eventually got to see the real jason: vulnerable, unsure of himself, yet in spite of all that, someone who always chooses to do the right thing.
the scene in mark of athena where they almost drown with percy is so underrated. seconds before assumed death,, all piper could think of is telling jason that she loves him. she chose those words as her last, not knowing that they would survive. in this life or death moment,, all her insecurities flew out the window,, and she just spoke as honestly as she could.
ik their relationship goes down a tragic path,, and ToA leaves a lot more to unpack,, but all i'm saying is their relationship was actually rly heartwarming 😭 to me, anyways lmao

haven't read sun and the star yet so unsure about rick's plans for the future but,,,,
there's SO much potential in writing something about the lost hero trio post-TOA. piper,, who's been struggling to adjust after all those major events and revelations in hoo,, is suddenly hit with jason's fate and is clearly even more confused and emotionally/mentally battered than ever. she's TRYING to move forward,, but knowing how she is at the end of TOA, there's still so much to process and grapple with for her. meanwhile leo??? he never got to say goodbye to his best friend, never even considered that any of this would happen while he was away. smart as he is, he probably figures it out fast that what happened to jason might've been caused by him cheating the prophecy. he likely starts thinking that he unknowingly saved his own skin in exchange for the life of his friend. can you imagine the guilt and regret there?? not only was he unable to be there in his best friend's final moments, but he also might've been the reason for the tragedy in the first place.
i can imagine the two of them trying to go on with their lives in oklahoma and indianopolis respectively,, but they can't shake the grief, fear, regret, and confusion harboring their hearts. they both have such strong motivations to do something crazy,, to take on a quest they shouldn't,, to be openly angry with the gods/fate and do something about it.
there's this line that leo says when he finds out about jason at the end of the burning maze. "he did what jason always did. he saved the day." and i can imagine the thought of that haunting both piper and leo. he always saved the day. but why couldn't they save him?
i'm not saying jason should be brought back to life because i think his fate makes sense for the overall narrative of the pjo world,, but it would be so interesting for rick to explore piper and leo's grief in response to what happened and make a story out of that.
