Let’s talk again about how Hermes tells Percy in TLO that immortals can’t change and then Rick hits us with Bob and Damasen. And then after we’ve cried over “say hello to the sun and stars for me” he hits us with an entire series about people breaking out of the narrative where the protagonist is the god of prophecy.

In House of Hades, Bob came for Percy but not Nico, who's supposed to have befriended him, in person.
Percy mentioned his name - he didn't even call - and Bob came jumping into Tartarus.
Tumblr media
But he didn't assist Nico when he was half-dying (or had probably died and just self-resurrected with the DoD's absence) in there.
Why?
I don't think Bob, innocent and simple as he was, would refuse to help his friend.
So it means that Nico didn't call.
Huh. I wonder why.
Did he not call because he had been alone for so long that he'd forgotten? Did he not call because he didn't expect help, nor did he want it? Because he didn't want anyone he held dear to be in there, even when it meant being with him?
Oh. How lonely it must be to feel like that. You would go to the burning Hell for your friend, but you have no one to call when it's you who has fallen into one.
My dandelion, why did you forsake yourself.

OKAY BOOK COVER REVEAL
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, the description Rick gave in his blog might be worrisome:

But I think Will can survive. My theory is Nico will give up his powers. As much as I love him being the most powerful demigod, his powers are hurting him at this point so I wouldn't put it past Rick to have Nico give them up partially or even entirely.
I believe Will Solace can pull through!!!

Nico saying he and Bob were “melancholy about their mutual ‘friend’ Percy Jackson, who never seemed to remember they existed” HAS BROKEN MY HEART bc I don’t want this sentence to exist but he’s spitting facts ykno

The way the fandom somehow forgets that the only reason Iapetus became Bob is because he was straight up trying to kill Percy. Percy didn’t actually have an obligation to the murderous Titan he memory-wiped to save his life and his two cousins. The only he thought about Bob after SOH was probably something along the lines of “one less Titan to fight” and nothing else, because again, he tried to kill Percy. This doesn’t even touch on the fact that Hades would not allow Percy to visit the Underworld to visit Bob; the very next time Percy comes to the Underworld, he gets locked in a cell. Like, nice of Nico to talk to Bob and all, but Percy had no reason to think this was occurring or to ever think about what was going on with that one Titan who almost killed him. I beg of some of y’all to think about context
bestie i love Bob but i could list reasons why Percy has no obligation to him, and vice versa.
Bob came into being because Iapetus was trying to kill Percy. he was borne from a fight to the death that Percy only survived because he was smart enough to use his surroundings to his advantage. Percy could have left him alone, confused, and empty on the banks of the Lethe. it would have been well within his rights as a kid who'd just almost died at this being's hand. instead, he took him to Hades, who would, if not take care of him, at least keep him safe. any obligation Percy may have had to the titan ended there.
and Bob? he didn't have to go down to Tartarus for Percy. that he did just shows how kind Iapetus could be, at his base, with no memories interfering with his loyalties. Bob remembers Percy saying they were friends, and that's it. nothing more from him. he goes to help because Nico told Bob how good a friend Percy could be. and once he gets to Tartarus? Percy immediately starts manipulating him again. rather than 'this is who you are,' it's 'this is what to do' and it's subtle enough that it can be disguised as a friend helping a friend! and Percy may even think of Bob as a friend, but that's not what he is first and foremost. first and foremost, he's a titan who needs to be kept in check.
gosh i love their dynamic. it's so intricate.

My friend and I made our Solangelo Book Bingo Boards! First is mine, second is theirs
(Yes, I know we sabotaged ourselves with stuff like #GiveWillAGun and Tartarus Pamphlet and Albania Reveal, but it was worth it, okay?)
Feel free to use it for yourselves if you want. This was so much fun and I encourage everyone else to do bingo, too

No but like. Have you ever considered what could have happened in the unfortunate event that Nico and Will failed?
I mean. Chances are Nyx would keep them down there in her own emotional torment. I feel reluctant to talk about Will but Nyx made it clear that she wanted Nico. Like keeping an insect in a glass jar to poke fun at, with just a little food and water enough for it to not die.
If Nico failed, what would have him wouldn't be death (bc obviously if it would then that's nothing different from going home to Hades) but endless torment in Nyx's hands - like what happened to Bob. Bob was hung between the line of life and death. Who said Nico and Will would be any better?
A few dream sequences and they was already restless and worn out. Imagine days and nights - flickering in and out of consciousness - and the only thing that greets you is a nightmare. Absolute madness.

BOB RESCUE MISSION CONFIRMED!!!

And they keep referring to it as the solangelo book despite it being "An Nico di Angelo Adventure" so imagine: the Son of Apollo Will Solace representing the sun and Nico di Angelo representing the stars because Nico will be Bob’s shining star that's going to save him.

SPOILER
I honestly loved this book. I believe Rick created this book for the intension of literal healing and closure.
Those who genuinely connected with nico didn't do so out of just being edgy but instead of a place of pain of being an outcast of outcasts. Which wasn't exactly self inflicted if the experiences came ramming into him. With everything that happened of course he would internalize it. But I think he realized that Nico was the child that many of his readers genuinely saw themselves through and if he has no happiness what would that mean for us?
If he never changes, if he never heals, and he never grows what would that mean to "the other Nico's and wills" out there.
Tumblr media
Like literally, it's okay to feel pain and to deal with the truama. It is apart of you but will never DEFINE you.
I am so grateful that Rick Riordan has created this new peice with lots of insinuations of passive suicidal ideation and realizing that it is in fact NOT them, it was the invironment they were in! And if you don't see that these were the main themes of the book then I don't really know what else to tell you besides read it again.
If it doesn't speak for you, maybe consider that it wasn't made for you. If you hate the change, you've placed yourselves in the shoes of Nyx.
And to those who struggled something similar to the main characters emotions, I love you guys and you are strong :) 💖
