We’re headed to Wisconsin for an Evening with Neil Gaiman @neilhimself. I’ve been waiting for this since I was 19, picked up my first NG book, Angels and Visitations, and fell in absolute love with his storytelling. Neil is my foremost role model when it comes to my writing, and a constant source of inspiration. While I know I won’t get to actually meet him because of COVID protocols this trip, just getting to be in the same room with him, listening to him speak, is really more than 19 year old me thought she’d get all those years ago. Today’s coffee pairing and/or correspondence: I recently set up an small area of my mantle for an ancestor altar. I’ve begun studying bone throwing and ancestor altars are a must. Honestly, I wish I would have done it sooner as I like seeing my grandparents on my mantle. I have a white seven day candle for them and as an offering, other than water, I like to leave a cup of black coffee (or tea). My grandparents all loved coffee so I’m sure they enjoy it now as well. Just make sure you’re disposing of the coffee before bed. The Tradition Reversed - To me this card is speaking to the fact that while tradition, history, familial ties, etc are important, you also need to know when to let these things go when they no longer serve you or they turn toxic. Just because something is the “way it’s always been done,” or someone is related to you, or has historical context, doesn’t mean it’s necessarily good for you. Many of us, specifically those of us within the LGBTQ+ community have experience with this. Toxic family members who consistently misgender us, preach hellfire, refuse to acknowledge our partners or our lives. Mainstream religion preaches tradition to keep people with uteruses downtrodden and “in their place.” History… well, do we really need to get into all the absolute shit in history, both 200 years ago or 2 days ago? We are allowed to walk away from all of it. Family, religion, history. We are allowed to find our own paths, our own families of choice and love, write our own history and hopefully write what will be better history for the generations that will come after us. Ask yourself what traditions can you walk away from, and what ones can you start today that will leave you and your loved ones happier, healthier, and the world just a little better than it was before.
