No matter how many times Donnie insisted his plastron wasn’t in the least bit comfortable, Niyah would always say otherwise. She laid with him, cheek on his midriff, arms wrapped snugly around him, and legs intertwined. The beams of sunlight woke her up a few minutes ago and she knew Donnie was awake by the way he was running his fingers through her hair (she loved this).

“Sweetheart,” Donnie whispered. Niyah ignored him. She wanted to stay in this moment a little longer, not wanting to have to get up and tend to the responsibilities she didn’t care about right now.

“Darling,” he called in a sing-song voice, scratching his nails to her scalp. Niyah unconsciously let out a pleased hum. “I know you’re awake…”

“Mm-mm.” She mumbled against his chest. Donnie chuckled and gently raked his nails down her back. She sighed into him and cuddled him closer. ‘If he wanted me to wake up so badly, he shouldn’t be doing all this,’ she thought. She placed a shy kiss on his tummy and buried her face deeper into him.

“Cute,” Niyah heard him whisper. She smiled. This was her favorite part of her day: when donnie wasn’t yet caffeinated and affectionate; when it was just them and the ambient morning warm in bed; when the first thing she got to hear, see, and feel was him. Feel him playing with her hair, feel his gentle heartbeat, feel the leathery texture of his soft shell. It was the best, her favorite part of the day.

“We have to get up eventually,” he said. “The guys already complain how I always spend the night at your place.”

“Let ‘em complain,” Niyah grumbled, pulling a laugh out of the terrapin.

“Five more minutes,” she whispered to him.

“Five more minutes,” he echoed.
