In my book, #Godigisel has a friend in the spirit world called Acsad who helps him. ⚔🐎 . In many cultures, a #spiritanimal is a guide in the #spiritworld for the #shaman, the traveller. . #Spiritguides act as teachers or messengers that are often said to take the form of an animal and have a personal relationship with the shaman. . Other names might be animal guides, spirit helpers, spirit allies, #poweranimals, or animal helpers. . It is said shamans do not choose the animal, rather it chooses, or has already chosen you. The animal is there to provide “medicine” to the recipient in the form of guidance, lessons, protection, power, or wisdom. Shamans worldwide have relied on the guidance, wisdom, and symbolism of spirit animals for thousands of years. . In an interview with a siberian shaman, Alya said this of animal totems: . 'I have a few totems. There is the totem of the bird – the white owl; I also have the totem of the marten. Somehow they come to you and you know this is it, you identify with it. The most powerful for any shaman is to possess the power of the bear totem. The bears, they take and they protect in the same time. The one who has the totem of the bear he protects. These are powerful people.' . Image: siberian panther animal totem. I cannot find the photographer's name for this pic, even after reverse image searching. . #SWORDOFTHEWARGOD #paganism #pagans #pagansofinsta #writer #historicalfictionnovel #books #bookseries #historicalfiction https://www.instagram.com/p/COi4WV9Hzel/?igshid=1enrtrjjw2wph

#Godi, the main character in my #novel is a kind of shaman. . #healers or #shamans are intermediaries between the physical and spiritual world. To these practitioners, Illness is thought to be caused by a loss of the soul from the body and the shaman’s role is enter that world and retrieve it so body and soul are whole again. . I find the experience of modern western DMT users similar in this regard. Some even having reported contact with atral beings and ET's through the drug. . The use of #spiritguides powerful plants or #totemic animals and charms assists the #shaman in the spirit world. . Psychoactive plants and fungi allowed for entry into the spirit world. Stephen Buhner in his book #SacredPlantMedicine states that it is within the human subconscious where mind-altering substances provide a gateway to the spirit world, the realm of the sacred. . The subconscious informs the conscious that our experiences within the spirit world are indeed real. It has been the shaman, the healer, the #priestess, the #mystic, or the religious leader that helps the travelers understand their journeys and experiences within the #spiritworld . In my next post, I'll go into spirit guides a little. . Pic1: Female shaman with drum from Altai region of Siberia. Pic2: Tlingit Healer in 1906. I've been researching #shamanism for my #historicalfiction. I've taken influences from as many sources as I can find with relevance. I recommend #thenorseshaman by Evelyn C. Rysdyk, it's very well researched. . #shamans are experts at entering altered states of consciousness called #trance, they believe that trance allows their souls to travel outside of their bodies throughout the human and spirit worlds while remaining under their strict control. . During #trance, shamans have been known to fly thousands of miles through the human world, across oceans and all over the spirit world, from the darkness of the #underworld to the unthinkable heights of the #upperworld . #Shamanic peoples believe that the true causes of everything that happens in the human world are actually the actions of spirits within the spirit world. . Some Shamans describe their visits to the spirit world as terrifying. In many shamanic traditions, the spirit world is full of fatal obstacles like soaring heights, monsters and animals, even cannibals. . In order to gain entrance to the land of the dead, an #Altai shaman from Siberia has to dodge underneath the sky as it flaps like an enormous windblown blanket against a mountain-top, then, balancing on a bridge the width of a human hair, cross an underground sea littered with the bones of other shamans. . Novice shamans from the Warao of Venezuala describe swinging on vine across an abyss filled with jaguars, alligators, and sharks and running past demons with spears and an enormous man-eating hawk. . Even Indian #Sora shamans with their relatively peaceful soul flights face serious dangers when soul flying to the spirit world. When she travels to the underworld, she must not eat any or play with any children there, no matter how tempting. If she does, her soul will be trapped there forever. . #SWORDOFTHEWARGOD #historicalfictionnovel #writer #books #bookseries #evelynrysdyk #shamanic #pagan #paganism #pagans #soulflight https://www.instagram.com/p/COKniCDHeH6/?igshid=1172fbbw5iqwk

Another character in my book is #Godigisel, #Garaboncias. . According to old sources, the Garaboncians are supernatural creatures in the form of educated wanderers, who know black magic. . Beliefs about them began with a tale of a #garabonciás who came upon a farmhouse and asked for eggs from the owner. If he didn’t receive his eggs, #hail and a #storms would follow, threatening crops. . According to #folklore, this happened by the creature grabbing a book from which he summoned a #dragon and then rode on it, tearing off the trees and the roofs of houses with its tail. . The older element is a storm demon (Wilder Jäger) showing features similar to the Germanic Odin-Wotan, the #taltos in the #Hungarian belief. A #garaboncias is a type of #wizard learns who they are in time where as the taltos, is a #shaman, a reincarnated god who always knows who they are. . Their knowledge, their tricks and observation, experience and logic contributed to its the creation of the legends, magnifying them as supernatural, distorting them to be devilish as Christianity took hold. . Middle age sources spoke of them as able to fly, appear and disappear, bring luck, hunt witches, break curses, see buried treasure, make trees grow to the sky; but what they are most famous for is summoning storms and riding dragons. . Apparently, 13 would study together, they learned from books in a school and after their training would sit on a 'wheel of fotune until 1 died and the rest would receive their #magic. . A more distant parallel is the reputation and memory of medieval southern French, northern Italian, weather-blackmailing blindfolders, tempestarius or tempestatum doctors . #SWORDOFTHEWARGOD #Garaboncias #paganism #pagans #gods #writer #bookseries #odin #wotan #wilderjäger #dragonrider #mythology https://www.instagram.com/p/COFaWBkHHjF/?igshid=3docexmtuzo1

"And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp #sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS." ~ Revelations 19:11-16 . In the Magyar archaic traditions Jesus Christ is known as the “Heavenly Táltos” (Égi Táltos). . Moving away from sword stories, I have begun to look at other mythologies that are influencing my book. One of my characters, Tudva, is something in between a shaman and a #witch but greater than both, a #Taltos . The name Táltos may be translated as “widened” or transcendent, having the abilities that are beyond the human world. . The #Táltos' character and traits are fused with the astrology of Sagittarius. In astrology #Sagittarius is also know or is represented as a #whitehorse a symbol of purity and of spirituality. The ruling planet of Sagittarius is #Jupiter . In #Greekmythology jupiter is #Zeus, King of Kings, Lord of Lords. In the Hindu (Bharat) culture Jupiter is regarded as Lord #Guru, the great teacher. . white horse worship can be seen all over the world. In #Magyar folklore, there is another character with supernatural powers: the #Garaboncias, often seen riding dragons or clouds. A figure I will describe tomorrow. . A baby born with teeth or an extra finger in ancient hungarian tradition may have been seen as a taltos, born with insight, being able to speak to the dead, commune with the gods and able to find missing people or essential herbs for medicine. . A taltos cannot be killed, their spirit forever reincarnating, in mythology, they often own a white horse (#pegasus) that travels as fast as thought. This 'vehicle' is, I believe a metaphor for their abilty to travel between worlds. . #Hicesius ascribed the worship of the sacred #sword to the #Sauromatae #Dionysius to the #Maeotians and #Ammianus in a passage, also related this practice to the #Alans . ("They fix a naked sword in the ground and reverently worship it as #Mars the presiding deity of those lands over which they range”). . If, however, Ammianus should actually have referred to the #Allans of his time, it could be argued that the #Huns had taken over an old Iranian cult. On the other hand, the Hsiung-nu of the #Han period likewise worshipped a sword: The #ching-lu was both a sword, tao, and a god, shen, to whom prisoners of war were sacrificed in the same way as to the Scythian #Aresacinaces . At least three more “Altaic” peoples held the sword so sacred that they swore by it. The #Avar kagan took an oath after the manner of his people on his drawn sword, the #Bulgars swore on their swords, and #SuleimantheGreat undoubtedly following an old Turkish custom, took an oath on his sword. But there were more, neither Iranian nor #Altaic peoples for whom the worship of the sword is attested. . The Gothic #Quadi “drawing their swords, which they venerate as gods, swore that they would remain loyal.” . The #Franks swore by their swords. The warriors in ancient India worshipped their swords. So Priscus may have been correct in his words. . Like so many peoples, from #Mongolia to #Gaul the Huns worshipped the god of war in the form of a sword. So the origin of the cult cannot be determined. . #paganism #alanic #sarmatians #SWORDOFTHEWARGOD #chinglu #handynasty #hunnic #mythology #scythians . As discussed in previous posts, both the #scythians and later the #sarmatians worshipped a #wargod involving #sword rituals. the #swordofMars /Ares was played a role in #Hunnic society as well. . Exploring the origins of the #Huns is a hot debate and one I will post about another time, but there are clear dots to be connected in their possible ancient history also. For such a powerful belief structure to have lasted as long as it did, over so many different peoples, over such vast landscapes amazes me. . This 'sword cult' is well evidencend by #Herodotus and #Ammianus 900 years later and then #Priscus #Jordanes after them. Here Jordanes talks of how #Atilla found the #swordofthewargod . "When a certain shepherd beheld one heifer of his flock limping and could find no cause for this wound, he anxiously followed the trail of blood and at length came to a sword it had unwittingly trampled while nibbling the grass. He dug it up and took it straight to Attila. He rejoiced at this gift and, being ambitious, thought he had been appointed ruler of the whole world, and that through the sword of Mars supremacy in all wars was assured to him." Jordanes: Getica Chapter 35 . Priscus, who initially wrote it down was a contemporary of #AttilatheHun and had even shared dinner with him, so his account is probably the most accurate. . No one knows the real name of the war deity of the 'barabrian' peoples, as the name in the case of the romans, #Mars like #Ares is likely a case of interpretation. . The etymological origins of Ares in Greek are quite unclear, and according to some the deity might be Thracian, since Ares is said to have come from Thrace in the Iliad. . Ther Greeks doubt rubbed cultural shoulders with #Aryans (Iranians) But a possible explanation for Ares' relation with Thrace is that the Greeks identified their god of war with a barbarous and warlike people they were familiar with, the #Thracians . #SWORDOFTHEWARGOD . There was a tale of a lost #Scythian sword that was forged by the #Gods for the ancient #Scythians rulers. . During Atilla's childhood, the Sword of God had become legend since its disappearance and children would hear their elders exclaim “Look for it, search for it, for he who finds God’s sword will rule the world”. . The Sword of God, also called the #Sword of #Mars and the Sword of Attila, was forged from the iron of a #meteorite by the Gods so that the Scythian kings would have the power to conquer all nations. . According to legends, 'the sword was won by the #Huns and the #Magyars after the two joined forces to defeat the Scythians'. The Huns wanted to move west while the Magyars wanted to remain, so they decided to give the sword to a blind man that would spin the sword 7 times and toss it; if the sword faced west, then the Huns would take it on their travels, and if it faced east, then it would stay with the Magyars. . As a twist of fate, a gust of wind blew on the seventh spin and carried the sword west and out of sight. That was how the Sword of God was lost to the world. That is until the sword found by Attila. That tale, I will share tomorrow. . 🗡🐎🏹 Pic: Scythian sword from Velyka Bilozerka mound, 4th century BC . #swordofgod #swordofwar #swordofthewargod #swordofmars #swordofares #AttilatheHun #pagan #paganism https://www.instagram.com/p/CNuPkNBnASa/?igshid=c62llvoeciai

#Hadúr . Short for Hadak Ura, meaning "Warlord" or "Lord of Armies" . He was the #wargod in the religion of the early #Hungarians and may have been part of the pantheon of the #Iazyges in some form. . He was the #metalsmith of the gods and wore armour and weapons made of pure copper, (his sacred metal) and it was said that he forged the '#Sword of God' (Isten kardja) which was discovered by #AttilatheHun and secured his rule. It was customary for the Hungarians to sacrifice white stallions to him before a battle. . The image is a fastener from the 9th century (a proto-Hungarian find from the Hungarian "Etelkoz"), unearthed in Kirovohrads'ka oblast, Ukraine and I have no idea which god he represents. Probably the #goldenfather or Isten or the king of the wind. #ClaidheamhSoluis or #swordoflight . The divine sword was a fiery and bright lightning weapon, most often conceived of as a throwing spear; in later traditions, the wielder would change from god to hero, and the spear tended to be replaced by sword. . From the heroic cycles, some prominent examples are Fergus Mac Roigh's sword #Caladbolg (covered in yesterday's post) and Mac Cecht's spear. Caladbolg was not a blazing sword. (but it did emit a rainbow arc of light when swung). . The sword of light (sometimes glaive) is a trope artefact that occurs in many Gaelic tales and folklore. The "Quest for sword of light" being one. The hero in these tropes may resort to the sword of light as the only effective weapon against his enemies, but often the sword is was not enough, and the supernatural enemy has to be attacked on a single vulnerable spot. Once again a parallel can be drawn from the #norsemythology of #baldr being struck by #hodr with a #spear . The assertion has been made that the sword #Claidheamh #Soluis is "a symbol of Ireland attributed in oral tradition to #Cúchulainn " (James Mackillop). . T. F. O'Rahilly suggested that the "sword of light" in folk tales was a vestige of divine weapons and heroic weapons, such as Cúchulainn's #shiningsword #CruaidínCatutchenn whose name means ‘the Hard-headed Steeling’. This sword (aka "Socht's sword") is said to have "shone at night like a candle". Frodo's sword spring to mind. . the legacy of these mythological and heroic weapons resemble the god Lug's lighting weapon, his "son" Cúchulainn's sword, (which I'll cover in another post) survive in the "sword of light" in folklore. . Willy Pogany 'The King's Son of Ireland.' #caladbolg . #FergusmacRoich King of Ulster, was well-known for his sexual prowess. His 'feats' are described in the #UlsterCycle . As well as Caladbolg his two-handed #greatsword means ‘hard cleft’ in Middle Welsh. The #sword was said to produce a rainbow when swung. . During his reign, he desired Nessa, a beautiful princess. A shrewd woman, Nessa agreed provided he briefly abdicate his kingship to her son, #Conchobar mac Nessa, for a year. Fergus agreed. Conchobar ended up doing a better job and took over the position permanently. . Fergus handled the matter stoically and had no qualms about serving under a better king. However, Conchobar wasn't satisfied with that and tried to kill him. . Fergus escaped, but Fiachu, his son, wasn't so lucky. Fergus was devastated. In his bid for revenge, he defected to Connacht, led by #QueenMedb and King #Ailill mac Mata. . #Medb was as oversexed as Fergus, so it wasn't surprising that the two became lovers. Ailill learnt of the affair while they were on an expedition to claim Ulster's prized stud bull. Furious, he ordered his men to steal Caladbolg while Fergus was 'busy' with Medb. . Fergus created a wooden sword and sheathed it, so that no one would know caladbolg had been stolen but Ailill returned Caladbolg soon after as a fierce battle was soon to erupt. . At the end of the battle, Fergus was stopped by Cormac Cond Longas, (Conchobar’s eldest son) from killing Conchobar. Fergus honours Cormac’s plea, but the thought of leaving his foe alive enraged him and he unleashed three slashes with Caladbolg, destroying three hills. . After Fergus has been in exile for fourteen years, #Ailill sees him swimming in a lake with Medb, and is overcome with jealousy. . The end of the tale mirrors the events in the #proseedda and #poeticedda as Lugaid the blind is persuaded by his jealous brother to throw a spear at Fergus, the spear hits him in the chest. He climbs out of the water and throws the spear back, killing Ailill's deer-hound, before dying. This may as well be #hodr conviced by the jealous #loki to throw a mistletoe spear at the god #baldr . #SWORDOFTHEWARGOD #baldur #mythology #irishmythology #irish #norse #bookseries https://www.instagram.com/p/CNhlVatnAUa/?igshid=ddfw4ffyn3q8

#Durandal . Legends state, that out of the 12 legendary paladins in service of #King #Charlemagne , #Roland was the most courageous. The #medieval #legends surrounding his name involve Durandal, the #sword of Roland. . The sword had been obtained but not kept by the young Charles. He slayed Braimant abd acquired the sword (Durendaus). . The owner of Durandal prior to Roland was a #Saracen named Aumon, son of king Agolante. According to the source 'Chanson de geste Aspremont', young Roland armed only with a rod, defeated Aumon, conquering the sword. . Durandal is said to have once belonged to the #Trojan hero #Hectour (who was killed by #achilles ) one of the greatest warriors of the #TrojanWar (“Orlando Enraged”, by Lodovico Ariosto) and was given to the paladin Roland by one of the best-known enchanters, #Maugris or #malagigi . Another version has it that it was #Wayland the Smith, a mythical smith, who forged Durandal. . Roland managed to cut off the right hand of Saracen king, #Marsile, and by doing this he made the king ineligible for fight. Also, Roland chopped off the head of Saracen prince, #Jursaleu using this same sword. Roland won many battles with the help of Durandal, including battles in Scotland, Ireland, Wales, before he was defeated at the Battle of Roncevaux. . Conferring to legend, in an attempt to destroy Durandal after the defeat, the mighty Roland created La Brèche de Roland, a 130-foot natural gap, high up in the Pyrenees. . #swordofthewargod #history #troy #bookseries #books #book #writer #Durendal #swords #mythology https://www.instagram.com/p/CNcBEL8H_Fp/?igshid=18z3abnf0e92p

Near the end of the #Iliad #Ajax and the most of the Greek warriors are still alive. When #Achilles dies, Ajax and Odysseus fight the Trojans to get his body and bury it with his companion, #Patroclus . Ajax, with his great shield manages to carry it to the ships, while Odysseus fights off the Trojans. After the burial, each lays claim to Achilles' magical armor for their heroic efforts. The armour had been forged on #MountOlympus by the #smith god #Hephaestus . They compete to see who deserves the armor. Ajax argues that because of his strength, the fighting he has done for the Greeks, saving the ships from Hector, and driving him off with a rock, he deserves the armor. But Odysseus is more articulate, and with the aid of Athena, the council gives him the armor. . Ajax is distraught by this and, “conquered by his own grief”, plunges his sword into his own chest and commits suicide. In the #LittleIliad Ajax goes mad with rage at Odysseus’ victory and slaughters the cattle of the Greeks. After returning to his senses, he kills himself out of shame. . Ajax's half-brother #Teucer stood trial before his father for not bringing Ajax's body or famous weapons back. Teucer was acquitted for responsibility but found guilty of negligence. He was disowned by his father and was not allowed to return to his home, the island of #Salamis off the coast of #Athens . So the #sword was never recovered and may have ended up in the hands of the greeks. . Vase: The suicide of Ajax the Great. Etrurian red-figured calyx-krater, ca. 400–350 BC. #Hector was the first-born son of King #Priam and Queen #Hecuba who was a descendant of #Dardanus and #Tros the founder of #Troy . In some accounts, his father was the god #Apollo . He was a prince of the royal house and the heir to his father's throne. He was married to #Andromache with whom he had an infant son, #Scamandrius . Hectour was a #Trojan prince and the greatest warrior for Troy in the #TrojanWar. He acted as leader of the Trojans and their allies in the defence of Troy, allegedly "killing 31,000 Greek fighters." He was eventually killed by #Achilles . When #Ajax fought him, Hector was unable to pierce Ajax's famous shield, but Ajax crushed Hector's shield with a rock and stabbed through his armor with a spear, drawing blood, the god Apollo intervened and the duel was ended as the sun was setting. . Hector gave Ajax his sword, which Ajax later used to kill himself. Ajax gave Hector his girdle that Achilles later attached to his chariot to drag Hector's corpse around the walls of Troy. . Boiardo's Orlando innamorato traces the indestructible sword #Durendal to Hectour's sword. . Painting: Jacques Louis David, Andromache mourning Hectour. Pic: Ajax and Hectour exchange gifts. I felt it necessary to follow on from perseus' #Harpe as it was one of the original #swords of the #wargods and there is more to say. . Harpe, in #greekmythology was also used by Zeus's son #Hermes (an Odin equivalent) to slay the titan #Argus . #Hercules had defeated the #Hydra with the same weapon. It is from these exchanges that the harpe got nicknames such as the #Scythe of #Cronus or the #Sickle of #Zeus (thor's equivalent) . The #falx to the romans, (meaning sickle) or a #sica to the #dacians and #thracians was a weapon with a curved blade that was sharp only on the inside. It was often used to disable soldiers by hacking at their right arms in the dacian wars of 101-102AD. It was so effective, the romans decided to use it. This was their key tactic afterall, if you can't beat them, employ one to fight the other! Or if that doesn't apply simply copy your enemy as best you can. . The #harpe was a type of sword mentioned in #AncientGreek and #Latin sources, almost always mythologically. . It was said to be the sword handed to #Cronus by his mother #Gaia to castrate and overthros his father #Uranus . #Perseus was provided with such a sword by his father, #Zeus who also used the harpe to battle #Typhon Perseus decapitated Medusa with Harpe. . Apparently the term for Perseus' sword is ensis falcatus. Which sounds a lot like the latin word #falx which means sickle! The falx was an ancient curved #thracian sword. . Achilles Tatius: "He was armed in his right hand with a double-natured sword (lit. sideros "iron") split into sickle (drepanon) and sword (xiphos). For while the handle for both begins from one from below, and there is a double edged #sword (lit. just "xiphos") up to the middle of the blade (sideros), from there the pointed and the bent break away. The point remains double edged (lit. "remains sword/xiphos"), as it began, and the bent becomes a sickle (drepanon), so that in one stroke [one part might kill by piercing and the other by cutting." . #SWORDOFTHEWARGOD #swords #bookseries #writer #books #book #mythology #history . #CroceaMors . Latin for "Yellow Death" was the name given to #JuliusCaesar 's sword, according to the legends presented by #GeoffreyofMonmouth In Middle Welsh versions, it is called Angau Coch -"Red Death" or Agheu Glas -"Grey Death". . According the the legendary historian #AlanWilson if there was an excalibur this is the sword. Apparently, when #ceasar first fought the britons he wasn't aware of their advanced metal shields and lost the sword as a result. . The British prince Nennius (Nenniaw) acquired Crocea Mors when, during single combat with Caesar, it got stuck in his shield. Nennius dropped his own sword a slew his enemies with the weapon after recieving a fatal head wound, It killed everyone Nennius struck with it. Nennius died fifteen days after the battle of a head wound inflicted by Caesar, and the sword was alledgedly buried with him. . According to A.W. the sword had an inscription which read: 'He who holds this sword, commands the hosts.' . #SWORDOFTHEWARGOD #history #writer #sotwg #mythology #bookseries #sword https://www.instagram.com/p/CM8FGKWnpH6/?igshid=1dg8qebkluc0p
