An introductory guide to getting into Sonic the Hedgehog...

…if you're a grown-ass adult who is busy and doesn't want to play a bunch of video games but thinks the characters look sorta cool.

If you've ever been curious about Sonic as a series but haven't known where to start, I have some recommendations! I think Sonic is a cool and still somewhat unique thing because it takes cartoony characters (like a Mickey Mouse or Felix the Cat) and lets them jump around in cool action sequences through the lens of a shonen anime. It's colorful and usually pretty light-hearted, and I think the character designs are pretty iconic.

There's two handy places you can start without prior context, to see if it's something you'd be into...

Getting Started: If You Wanna Read Something

The IDW Sonic Comics

There were years of different Sonic comics back in the '90s and early 2000's, but the franchise got a complete reboot and fresh start with IDW Publishing in 2018. If you're looking for the most straight-forward way to get into this world of characters, I think this is a great start. You don't need any prior knowledge whatsoever to crack open issue 1 and get started. All you need to know is "Sonic and his friends protect the world by fighting against an evil scientist named Dr. Eggman, who they just recently defeated after he briefly took over the world."

I love these comics and I feel that the writers and artists who work on it have a really good sense for this series. Reading issues 1 through 12 will get you the first major story arc. If you like it so far, I highly suggest reading up through issue 32, when another major story arc concludes. After that, the world's your oyster! Unlike the tangled web of Marvel or DC comics, IDW Sonic has a very simple and linear reading order. You pretty much just read the issues in order, and occasionally there are spinoff stories that are optional to read.

Getting Started: If You Wanna Watch Something

Sonic Mania Adventures

Maybe comics aren't your thing and you want something even quicker. These are a series of animated shorts that are lovely. Conveniently, they've been compiled together by Sega into one little video right here.

It's a great intro to some of the main characters, and combines cartoon slapstick with some amazing action sequences.

There's also a nice little epilogue short.

Sonic CD's intro cutscene

If I had to pick a single 1-and-a-half minute clip to embody what I like about this series, it would be this very simple intro movie that plays before Sonic CD. Check it out!

Sonic Origins/Sonic Origins Plus Cutscenes

In 2022, Sega released a compilation of the classic Genesis games on modern consoles. In it, they added a few animated cutscenes. You can watch those cutscenes, plus the Sonic CD intro and the Sonic Mania Adventures episodes, all compiled into one handy Youtube video.

Taking The Next Step: If You Wanna Read Something

The Archie Sonic Comics

You might have heard that Sonic had a comic series published by Archie Comics from 1992 to 2016. This was a vast, overarching series that wrote an original story by weaving together ideas from the different Sonic cartoons and games. It went through several different writers, many different artists, and obviously spanned over multiple eras of pop culture.

It's pretty cool! The fact that it was so long-running, and the fact that Sega wasn't very strict with what the writers could do, led to a lot of buckwild lore, new characters, and plot developments. That said, it's also pretty bizarre, complicated, corny, and cringey at times. There is a stretch in the middle that is pretty infamous among fans.

You have a few options for jumping in.

Option A: You can start at the very beginning and read all of it. If you do this, it is going to be like a One Piece / Homestuck / etc. kind of undertaking, and you're going to be pushing through the good and the bad of huge genre and tone shifts. That's your call!

Option B: You can brush up on the main characters on a wiki and then start at Issue 160, when Ian Flynn (who now does a lot of work on IDW Sonic) became the lead writer. More specifically, you can jump in at the start of a new story arc by starting at Issue 175.

Option C: You can start at Issue 252, when there is a universe-altering event that essentially retcons all of the characters and plot threads from the previous writers and starts completely fresh. Easier to keep track of and you won't have to worry about all the previous plot and lore.

If you want something you can read in a single sitting, you should instead read Sonic: Mega Drive, a short-lived miniseries published by Archie that follows "Classic Sonic" characters (aka, the same vibe and art style of Sonic Origins, Sonic Mania Adventures, etc.) It's really great!

Taking The Next Step: If You Wanna Watch Something

Sonic the Hedgehog (OVA) aka "Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie" (1996)

This is, essentially, a 1-hour Sonic anime movie. You can watch it in Japanese or in English. I adore it. It makes up its own lore and continuity so you don't need to know anything before going in, besides generally knowing a one-sentence synopsis of who Sonic, Tails, and Dr. Robotnik are. It's action-packed, well-animated, and has great music. Enjoy! Sonic X If you're enjoying what you've seen so far, and you want something much, much longer...there's an official 78-episode anime adaptation of Sonic called Sonic X. It's an original story that loosely pulls together some ideas from a few of the games. It's mostly intended for a younger audience, but I hear if you watch it in the original uncut Japanese, it feels a little less "for kids."

Other Ways To Get Into Sonic

There's some great video essays on Youtube about the series!

Professional animator Dan Floyd did an in-depth video looking at the highs and lows of Sonic character animation in the games starting from Sonic 1 up through Sonic Forces.

Super Bunnyhop plays through the first level of a bunch of Sonic games to compare how the mechanics, physics, and level design feel throughout the games' history.

Liam Triforce has a great deep dive on the franchise's music.

You can play The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, a murder-mystery-party themed visual novel put out by Sega. It's nice and short, so you can finish it in an afternoon.

If you haven't seen them already, you can check out the live-action/animated hybrid films Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 featuring Ben Schwartz and Jim Carrey, they're pretty good. That Sonic Prime cartoon that's currently on Netflix is pretty good too.

This may sound strange, but honestly you might enjoy poring over the sprite sheets from the old games. In particular, I really like the sprite animations from the GBA games, like Sonic Advance and Sonic Battle.

Sega is pretty lax about allowing noncommercial fan games, so there's at least a hundred different Sonic fan games out there by hobbyist developers. Check out the Sonic Amateur Games Expo and the Sonic Fan Games HQ.

You can watch LPs or cutscene compilations of the games on Youtube! If you watch Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, and Sonic Heroes, you'll get a crash course on most of the characters.

And finally, of course...you can play the games if you want to! There's a number of them that are available on Steam, Switch, Xbox, and Playstation if you don't have access to older consoles.

There's a lot of different angles to come at Sonic as a franchise, and lots of different entry points. Have fun!

Apologies for the quality.

This was meant to be animated but I got busy and then it got stuck in my drafts for weeks. Realised I probably wasn't going to finish it at this rate so I made it into a few frames.

TRANSLATION NOTES BELOW:

This is just the translation process for those curious. I did the research myself. If you have any thoughts yourself I would like to hear it.

"Top of the morning"

So slang doesn't really exist in BSL (British Sign Langauge) or conjoining words (of,the), which left me with "top morning", but that didn't make any sense.

So I went with the literal meaning of the phrase which was "Good Morning", but that made it lose what made it iconic in translation. So instead of doing BSL I used ISL instead, so it retained the Irish aspect.

"to ya laddies."

again, very similar issues to the above. I instead used ISL "Friend", though I am limited by my own art style, as a big way to convey plurals is through mouthing the words and the 's' sound. If I re-did this I would find a phrase to indicate multiple friends better.

"my name is"

Now finally using BSL. Very straightforward as there is a sign for "my name is" already existing.

"Jacksepticeye"

This one was fun. Since I originally was going to animate this, spelling out the name would be time consuming and take pretentious. Which is why many people use shorthand for names, aka, creating a sign for the name.

At the time of making this I watched JSE Kindergaten 2 Series in which he conveyed a similar problem when writing his signature, Jacksepticeye being too long. So instead he shorten it to writing a 'J' and a 'Eyeball' in BSL. Which is what I did here.

So, I said I'd have another post with the full manga pages for reference as well as the source of the manga pages. I'm going to be using the overall chapter numbers and the individual volume numbers (not the 2-in-1 volume names) as well as the Viz localized chapter names for the references. And I'm gonna go in order of appearance in the intro.

Chapter 98, Volume 10, Typhoon Fun. Cute little note, the mouth squiggle was clearly made into a heart in the anime intro.

Chapter 15, Volume 2, The Yellow Ribbon of Happiness. Unlike many of the remade manga panels which altered some details, this one features the ribbons.

Chapter 25, Volume 3, Love and Suffering. The original manga panel featured Lum disguised as a regular human girl prior to her enrollment in the school, with her horns softened and squished to look like barrettes. This is also why her hair is shaded differently.

Chapter 38, Volume 5, Everybody in the Rain. This one required me to make a guess. It does resemble Lum scratching Ataru in the Yellow Ribbon chapter mentioned above or Lum scratching Rei in chapter 6, but this is the only scratching while flying I found. I got some anonymous help with this one.

Chapter 26, Volume 3, How I've Waited for You. Beloved iconic scene recreated faithfully.

Chapter 12, Volume 2, Intention. Though it does somewhat resemble Lum's crying fit in chapter 2 and chapter 9, this scene is definitely from this chapter.

Chapter 23, Volume 3, Zodiac Cycles. The middle part of the zodiac gyroscope device-thing lost its one-horned striped tiger-beast (Lum's zodiac sign).

Chapter 36, Volume 4, Tanabata Date. The fur on the chair ends up floating but we have all the details on the dried squid.

Chapter 83, Volume 9, A Century by Age Three. This was a red tint chapter originally, hence the manga page looking a little different.

Chapter 354, Volume 33, Steal My Heart. Almost all the manga panel recreations come from early volumes or chapters, so it is kind of crazy that this one is from so late in the series. It is a wonderfully silly pose with the iconic Rumic gesture and yes, they replaced her uniform with the typical bikini.

Chapter 13, Volume 2, Puppet. The fan was made a bit more generic, despite UY often using the Japanese flag fan as a comedic prop.

Chapter 183, Volume 18, A Night Alone. This is the Lum cooking scene that I felt most matched the anime panel. The one in chapter 240 looked a bit different. Though they clearly drew a completely different gun than the one in either panel.

Chapter 47, Volume 5, A Tragic Date. I completely overlooked this when I was digging because I misinterpreted what the anime panel was showing. I got some anonymous help and I am glad I did, because I was not gonna find it in the next 29 volumes. Anyway, this one has her beach swimsuit replaced with her usual outfit. Also, this is one of the few panels that is drawn very differently than the source seeing as Lum was drawn with very cutesy proportions in the original manga panel.

Chapter 111, Volume 11, There's a Cat on the Stairs!. I didn't expect this to be a panel recreation since Lum jumps out of it, but I saw it while digging and yeah, it is clearly the same goofy expression.

So I watched all of the 98 show in less than 24 hours and adored it so I went into Stampede cautious and yknow I liked it just a tiny bit (as I am writing this I am on my 4th rewatch, I watched it for the first time 3 days ago, I adore it). Rabbit Debunks Hbomberguy’s “RWBY is Disappointing Video” and explains why the Critics are wrong about RWBY.  Part 1 of 2

Making a thread reacting to the hbomberguy RWBY is Disappointing video.

Mostly as a refresher and also because there’s been a lot of dissension regarding it so why not.

You’re not supposed to pronounce the W So the gist of it, is that he feels like it has great concept that could be interesting, but fails to execute it in any meaningful way???

Like overall it’s bad but there’s few good glimpses-

Of what could be a great show.

I guess for now I guess I can give it the benefit of the doubt and assume good intentions so far.

No words on the History of Monty Oum and RT history.

I mean it pretty much all checks out

Though immediately admitting your bias against the show takes the validity of some of your criticisms away ngl.

So he loves the Red Trailer but brings up the views it gained and then brings up the views of the episodes (Vol 1 ep 1 and 2) as a sort of gotcha like “oh see the trailer is more popular than the episode like look at the 15M to (episode 2) 6.8M ratio!!!”

Like those are two-  Wildly different things my guy

But what’s up with that “Red Like Roses Part 1 is the best composed music Jess has ever done” take?????

Using the ending of Vol 2 as a point in your “they don’t know their story” when Ruby is laying down all the things that they have yet to solve (leading into the new volume and this laying down the groundwork for it)

It’s obviously in your face my dude.

Ah damn, a little out of order, but is there instances where Miles or Kerry  acknowledges good faith criticism? Panels? Deleted tweets? Anything?

Mainly just curious if it’s true that they haven’t and he just didn’t do the research by saying he “has a hard time finding any”

Another thing. Forgot to mention.

Really wish he prefaced his complaints about the voice acting and writing that he understood that the studio itself was amateurish and small with not a lot of budget to work with. (Unless that’s true) not that there isn’t criticism but that- There are TANGIBLE reasons why it’s the way that it is.

Where Do We Even Start?

Uhhh they never dropped the Dust Theft plot line????

Volume 2 was literally the culmination of the dust theft and the reason is because of Cinder’s plans.

Another thing that’s in your face but just, weirdly you gloss over???

Quite literally, the intro talks about things that weren’t even revealed until Vol 4 to 9. The intro is good and sets up what it NEEDS-

Like sure you can say “oh but it’s only added till later when they got the story that they wanted to tell straight”

Mate, a pro tip for a lot of writers renowned/acclaimed have admitted that some of their works or some of their best writing decisions were made by the seat- Of their pants.

You think Naruto, one of the most iconic and popular anime of all time would have spun into how it is just off the intro of the first episode?

What about Bleach?

ATLA?

One Piece???

There are so many instances where the intro just isn’t all encompassing bc- That just isn’t how story writing goes.

You can have the best most rigid outline in the whole world, but at times you’re gonna go off script because there’s something you want to expand upon more or explore.

Ends off this segment by saying that RWBY’s story is interesting and it has neat ideas (backahandedly by adding “to write a wiki about”) but the storytelling only gets worse.

Which, I sort of disagree with???

It’s not stellar by any means, but I chalk that up with them- Not having the sort of resources available.

However from what they managed TO put together it was coherent enough to convey what they were meaning to portray.

Though I do have my gripes with certain aspects of the first two volumes.

But from V3 on? It’s only gotten- Stronger.

Yes I harp on V5 a LOT and it’s still one of the weaker volumes, but the conversations and character dynamics where stronger than they’ve been.

It was mainly the animation in the last few episodes of the giant fight that I just, wasn’t vibing with at all.

Worldbuilding and Conveyance

So next he talks about how aura was explained.

Bringing up both Harry Potter and ATLA and how they tell it as an example.

Following it up by making a rwby edit to make it seem as if it was mundane and boring.

Which isnt the case at all.

If you- Actually take the time to watch the scene.

It's about 1:20 long and while the explanation of what Aura does is being told to the viewer, it shows Ren taking down the King Taijitu with his aura.

It's another valid form of story telling because it's not just two characters talking on screen.

it's also giving us an insight of how it would be put into action.

"No one just happens to have full on speeches prepared in case anyone is to ask"

Uhhh, have you met Weiss?

Even the examples you gave literally is Hermione and Katara.

Idk, how does Naruto not know about Chakra despite 8 years as a academy student.

He probably just skipped out on it or didn't take it seriously enough.

He never went to- A prep school like Signal either.

His transcripts were faked, so you could easily say he went to Beacon with nothing more than a Dime, A old Rickety sword and a dream lol.

Also Pyrrha is super smart and also a really great battle tactician.

Of course she would be able to- recite what Aura does word for word.

It's not mischaracterization.

You just want to twist that narrative against her.

And not just that, I feel a strong mischaracterization of Jaune.

If Jaune is played off as an idiot for jokes, that's cool. But if he's shown to just not- Understand or doesn't know about the world at large, then that could hint at the fact that Jaune is more than just an idiot.

He's probably born in the sticks/boonies.

A country bumpkin if you will where Hunters aren't all that well known nor pop culture.

It doesn't dumb down the other characters.

Because Weiss is frustrated herself that someone so famous isn't recognizable by anyone and everyone in the world.

Same thing with her and the SDC

Well he brings up the Jaundice thing and yeah that's fair, a lot of people have gripes with that (i'm not one of them) and brings up how Pyrrha is only really a character for Jaune's development as a fighter and romance option but not much else on her own.

Which... Yeah I kinda- get that too.

Like, I liked Pyrrha too, but I do wish she had more to do in V1 and 2.

But in V3 is where she shines.

Hell there were so many people who did cry and got shocked by the end of Vol 3 even with the amount of screentime she gets.

Jaune isn't the main character.

How I've always viewed RWBY and JNPR has always been: RWBY as the protagonist and JNPR as the deuteragonist.

They hold about the same amount of importance because of how close their teams are.

So of course you're going to want to give the deuteragonist development and screentime to.

And yes Jaune had Jaundice.

RWBY still has an ABSURD amount of episodes dedicated to them as well so the balance/ration will always be in RWBY's favor regardless of how you feel about Jaune as a character and Jaune's importance to the story.

Same goes for the rest of NPR

"The writer's dont know what Yang's semblance is.

It goes from her being angry, to it being her taking hits and she transfers that energy back to them by hitting them again, and then temper tantrums, and then re-xeplain it as a redirection of energy stored from hits."-

Uhh, no.

Her semblance has always been about redirection of stored energy from attacks and aiming them back at the opponent.

Every single time we see her use it, it's always after she's taken several hits.

It's probably still possible to use it without taking hits, but its more than- likely less powerful.

He goes on to talk about how semblances are abstract and only gets mentioned 14 episodes later.

Which sure ok, but the gist of them and how they work are still easily within the story.

Could they have expanded upon it more earlier on? Yeah they could.

But to sit there and say, "When Pyrrha used her abilities and Ruby and Weiss look at her like she was weird and surprised and confused she has powers too"

no no no no no, that is grossly misreading the scene.

Pyrrha has kept her semblance a secret from anyone and everyone.

No one knows what it is or if she even had one.

They were just confused by what she did, why her hand glowed black, and why her hand was out.

It had nothing to do with them being confused about why someone else had a semblance, but more so they never knew what Pyrrha's was.

and also, the reading of Semblance = magic is both meh and eh.

Like if you looked at any and every single semblance that exists in RWBY, every single one of them have to do with concepts that has nothing to do with earth, wind, fire, and water.

Whereas Magic in the series- has Maidens throwing storms, lightning bolts, fire, ice, etc. at any enemy they choose.

That's the major difference between magic and semblance.

Magic is divine, naturalistic. Semblances are more man made if that makes sense.

Man he really does not like how semblances are portrayed/exposited.

Like it's been just as long as he harped on for Pyrrha expositing the aura scene.

It's not a semi complicated concept at all, like he said it was.

It's very easy to follow and very easy to understand. he brings up Emerald and Cinder knowing about it, but doesn't bring up the fact that Pyrrha had to have put it in her application for Beacon or her personal- record that only Beacon has track of.

A record that they broke into with the helps of Watts, but not just that.

But Mercury also figured it out because he's an intelligent fighter just like Pyrrha is.

You can just say that Pyrrha's opponents were all just dumb for not figuring it out.

But no, it's just bad writing I guess.

Brings up WoR as an example of not being able to tell the story completely and labels it as homework.

It's not necessarily out of the norm though.

There are lots of character guides, extra material that expands on characters, worlds-

nd ideas that you can't really put the time in the show to do.

Like let's look at the first 3 volumes and how most episodes where 12-15 minutes long.

And even then they were still trying to get the hang of writing for something so massive as RWBY.

Having extra material so readers can get a better understanding of the world around them isn't bad. because even then, most everyone knows who Faunus are.

How Aura works, what a semblance is. all of these on a surface level.

If you want to dig deep, thats what WoR is for.

Unless you just wanna insult the show and embrace ignorance?

Some Positive Examples

Such a nothing complaint really. 

Just Miles and Kerry's writing vs Monty's character acting (in terms of how he conveys the four in a team fight (example being Team RWBY vs Mecha Roman)). 

I mean, I dont know what to really say here.

"The writers are so busy writing drama and wacky skits to explain why they're friends while Monty is putting in the REAL work with the fight scenes and showing how close they are and how far ruby has come at becoming a leader."  

Yeah... Cause that's what writers and animators do

Briefly touches on Ships and how Monty, Kerry, and Miles referenced them in the fight. (also decided to call it creepy since Ruby is 15 and the other girls are 17...

Which isn't that bad??

Like Sophomore and Senior in High School really).

Wasn't Ichigo Kurosaki 15 and Naruto not even 13?

Also says they didn't make a name- for Ruby and Yang because of the certain fans that ship those two together so they avoided that one altogether

I can't seem to see his point of bringing this up because on one hand it feels like he's admonishing them for it, but  on the other hand he seems... like he's a little upset that they dont have a team attack name?

Maybe just at the inconsistency of it. Which i can understand.

I would have maybe came up with one that isn't fandom made so they can have a cool SISTERS team attack, like Rose Dragon!

Ends off this segment talking about more Miles and Kerry vs Monty (with Shawn being added in).

Another example of writing vs character expositing through animation by using the Pyrrha vs Mercury fight as well as the exposition between Emerald, Cinder, and Mercury.

Lots of talk about animation being weird and how he's seen worse animation but the stories were good enough to overlook it.

I'd be a broken record by stating this again and again.

But just look at what they had to work with. Look at how divided the writing and the animation- really were with Monty coming up with new characters that the team had to shove in last minute.

Look at Poser even and how the engine was something really only Monty and Shane (oops I made a mistake in that other post) could work to the level that they did.

Look at RT and even CRWBY at the time.

And now look where they are now.

You can't tell me that they've gone downhill when most of your gripes that you've complained about are/have been fixed in the later seasons.

Frozen Creative Notes Volume 2 Part 1 | Chapter songs edition

Some more extra content for the few readers who actually listen to the chapter songs or songs I sneak into the story.

Spoilers ahead up to chapter 15 so read at your own risk!

Chapter 1 Song | Firestarter by The Prodigy: The Prodigy is one of my all time favorite bands so it was only right to start the story off by making one of their songs an intro to Frost as a character. The moment Firestarter came on, I thought "this is Frost" because it foreshadows her personality and temper, along with the past she's known for, and hints that she's bringing that trouble with her. Additionally, I found it cool that there's a "Hey" repeating throughout the song. It's like she's greeting the TF141 as she joins the team, saying "Hey, I've arrived to complicate your lives."

2. Chapter 2 Song | it’s ok, you’re ok by Bonjr: although, it's an instrumental song, the title is relevant as it's what the officer says to little Frost once he finds her ("It's ok, you're ok. You're safe."). It's the first bit of comfort she ever receives from another person.

3. Chapter 3 Song | Conspiracy by Paramore: Frost finds out that the team lied and knew about Doberman before her transfer. Then, Price went behind her back and invited Keegan to join them on the mission. At this point, she still doesn't trust the team and realizes that the power she had as a solo operator is now fading. She begins to understand that she depends on the decisions of the team.

4. Chapter 4 song | Arrow by Surf Curse: This song is about what's going on inside Frost's head. It's the first time readers get a glimpse of her vulnerability, the way she deals with all the trauma she carries with her, and how bad she is at understanding her own emotions.

5. Chapter 5 Song | Night out by Radiator Hospital: Oopsie. This was just straight foreshadowing of what happens to Sergeant Bo.

6. Chapter 6 Song | It's All So Incredibly Loud by Glass Animals: We're inside Frost's head again. She's struggling with the loss of Bo and her guilt.

7. Chapter 7 Song | Tears by Boy Harsher: History repeats itself. Price asks Frost to join Las Cuchillas again. The song focuses on her discomfort at the thought of going back and foreshadows the origin of her knife throwing skills ("follow the knife").

8. Chapter 8 Song | Knife Prty by Deftones: Once again, a simple play on words. Frost takes on the members of Las Cuchillas, stealth-style with knives. The song foreshadows Frost's successful initiation and Carmen's pining for Frost in the following chapters.

9. Chapter 9 Song | Ese Hombre by LA INDIA: I fucking adore this song. Basically, the whole song is about a horrible man the singer is in a relationship with. She spits at his face, devours him. It's iconic. BUT although she hates him, he is still her man. This is how Carmen sees Frost. Frost has done her wrong, but she's still her Cocaina.

How can you not love it? She goes off lmao.

10. Chapter 10 Song | Reckoner by Radiohead: Aww this one. This one makes me siiiick. We're in Soap's head now... That sweet idiot. Soap risks his life to see and check on Frost while she's out with Las Cuchillas. The main reason for this song choice is the melody. It's as if I'm listening to Soap's desperation to save Frost in a form of a melody, how his thoughts and his heart tear at his helplessness. There's also this very simple line that perfectly explains his need to protect Frost at that very moment:

11. Chapter 11 Song | Summer Again by The Wytches: Frost loses Carmen. The grief is too much for her. She decides to leave. The whole song is just... just listen to it. It's an incredible musical depiction of vulnerability and pain. I feel like someone is tearing my heart open when I listen to it.

First line: Frost never got to tell Carmen how much she actually did care about her, second line: Frost is sitting on the floor with Carmen's body in her lap, third line: Frost decides to run away

12. Chapter 12 Song | Bad Timing by dEUS: Pretty self-explanatory. Frost comes back, only to find Soap and Jazz in her room. We all remember this one. Ouch.

13. Chapter 13 Song | You Do Something To Me by Paul Weller: The team goes on a team building trip. She's still in denial, but Frost realizes she has some kind of feelings for Soap since she is bothered by Jazz and they have a brief tense moment after the volleyball match. Beautiful song.

14. Chapter 14 Song | Vale by Maribou State: Frost starts pining for Soap, badly. She's barely holding herself together next to him, especially on the beach after the kayaking accident. The song shows Frost's internal vulnerability, excitement and realization that she does in fact, feel him.

15. Chapter 15 Song | Die On A Rope by The Distillers: Love the energy of this song and thought it would be awesome for an action-packed chapter. Also, a pretty literal play on words. Ghost and Frost are stuck on a cliff. Ghost urges her to jump to him but she's reluctant to do it. Will she jump? Will they die on a rope if she does?

I recently got back into the anime and thus redrew the oc which had me thinking, I should get back into the ask blogs! After looking to see if it was still a thing within the fandom, here we are ! I gotta make some things like an icon and header aswell as a character intro post, then we'll be on our way!

Initial Thoughts on the OPLA: Episode 1

I’ve just reread the manga through the East Blue + rewatched the anime through Orange Town with my sister (a coincidence on that one), so I’ve got the story really fresh on my mind and want to record my initial impressions on what works and what doesn’t. I’ve been a major live action proponent for years now, so super excited to finally get to watch it.

The Good

The sets are all spectacular. The ships especially at the start are an absolute treat!

The casting across the board is very strong, both in bringing to life the visuals of some characters (Coby and Higuma are gasp-out-loud exact replicas of their characters) and in terms of creating a world that feels real and lived in. Iñaki is shockingly believable as Luffy, every dopey line feels organic; Mackenyu delivers in the fight choreography and physicality of Zoro; and Emily Rudd is exceeding my expectations based on what we saw in the trailer.

In some scenes with Luffy/Coby, they light Coby so he has this almost angelic glow. And I love that. Because it would be too obvious to light Luffy up like the sun, but instead, it’s like Coby is lit from within in the light of Luffy’s will

The way they layer in the flashbacks throughout the episode works much better than one big cutaway, so kudos to that decision. (Also child Luffy is a delight.)

So far really enjoying the fight choreos. They don’t overstay their welcome, each character has their own style – particularly like the way Luffy kind of falls all over himself in the Axe Hand Morgan fight – and everything looks clean and like it connects. Big fan of letting Nami show off her staff skills. So long as they don’t have her beating major antagonists, I think it’s a good addition because it would be visually disappointing if she just skulked around during the fights

Speaking of Nami, the way they’re integrating Nami into the story in ep 1 worked really well. The changes to the plot may cause issues in later episodes, but it was a very solid intro to Nami – preserving her iconic intro scene with the Buggy pilots – while also giving her a different mission and reason to partner up with Luffy. And anyway, I like watching Nami hatch a scheme.

They translated some of the more ridiculous, on-the-nose character traits of the antagonists into believable representations of the same thing. Morgan doesn’t walk around announcing his “greatness” every ten seconds, but he’s swayed by flattery, loves a statue of himself, and can’t accept responsibility. Alvida is vain and narcissistic without being a mean-spirited trope. It’s great.

A lot of funs are going to debate if certain lines or jokes are cringe, but I think the dialogue is charming and very much in line with the humor popularized in major action franchises. It’s not groundbreaking humor but it got a chuckle out of me a few times. And honestly who gives a fuck about cringe? I think a lot of anime fans live with the specter of their high school bully looming over their shoulder, imagining what they’d say to any given thing and they’ve gotta let that shit go

The Meh

In Luffy’s opening scene, it appears he’s talking straight to the audience, introducing himself, only to reveal he’s actually talking to a News-Coo when the camera cuts. And the joke is not nearly funny enough to justify how jarring those first 20 seconds are when you think they’re going to have characters address the camera directly.

The timeline in Shellstown gets flipped around, so that we can see Zoro earn his arrest, which is a great choice – show don’t tell and all that. BUT the change they made to why Zoro fights Helmeppo drains all the nobility out of it. They keep saying “you protected that girl” but Rika wasn’t in danger? Helmeppo was unkind to her but not threatening, not siccing his vicious attack dogs on her like in the anime. If Zoro hadn’t interfered, she would have been fine. I appreciate he doesn’t like bullies, but I think it’s a weaker reason to intervene and should be less impressive to Luffy.

The named characters who attend Roger’s execution stand out so ridiculously. Everyone else is covered in dirt and wearing beige tones, and you’ll cut to the cleanest looking man playing Mihawk or young Shanks with his hair standing out like a beacon. It’s very much that “anime spot the protagonist” meme

The Ugly

That man – while admittedly very sexy –is not Garp. It’s almost shocking compared to how carefully the spirit of every other character has been preserved.

The changes made to Coby’s story in episode 1 are pretty disappointing.  A pretty key part of Luffy’s character is that Luffy helps people who ask for help or fight for themselves; He’s not just a hero who will swoop in when he witnesses injustice. Coby earns Luffy’s respect and protection in the manga. Here, he doesn’t. He just gets dragged along reluctantly with Luffy until the very end of the episode, where he finally makes his stand, and it’s pretty anticlimactic.

Withholding judgment for the Time Being

Live action Zoro is a lot angstier so far. He’s just as confident and competent, but less likely to laugh, has less fun with it. From his intro scene, it appears the death of Kuina may be weighing on him more heavily (wonder if it will be a more recent death in the live action?). He leaves Shellstown not yet bought in on Luffy’s will. I think slowing his arc down makes sense for a tv show, so interested to see how it delivers on that.

We’ll see where they take the Garp arc. If it keeps Coby and Helmeppo on my screen – and more importantly, gives Coby a chance to redeem himself – I may come to love it.

i had just, the most incredible and visual dream last night and i really dont want the imagery i experienced from it to fade. hopefully typing a written record about it will at least refresh my memory of it any time i return to it.

so, i was in a crummy motel with my aunt and grandma, i was sleeping in as it was early morning but i heard faint traces of what was on the tv. lots of people performing songs on stage. i heard a pleasantly good cover of running up that hill by a soul group called Mystery so i looked it up on my phone for later, but the search results also informed me of something very valuable: sparks were about to go on on that very same show that was airing right now. as soon as the show host announced their presence, i started cheering and whooping loudly which startled and annoyed my aunt as she thought i was still asleep but apparently i can pull myself awake for sparks lol.

and this is where dream logic comes in, because i was both still in that motel bed and also there where the show was being filmed in the audience. now, they weren't going to perform live, which i was a bit disappointed in at first, but the stage inexplicably became a gigantic triptych screen, slightly folded inward on the outer screens, think like the garden of earthly delights by bosch (fittingly). ron and russell were there to announce the debut of this special sampling of their new album and it would indeed be an hour long which i was excited about (aunt was ambivalent). they came into the audience to personally greet/thank the fans for showing up in support and i, despite being far in the back, received a handshake from both brothers, ron noting that he remembered me and apologized that "nothing is as exciting as the first time meeting i know but thanks for coming." i thought, what a classically ron thing to say!

the screens went on and a pan of the audience was shown. camera was on me for a second so i ruffled my bangs that were out of place and i heard a few friends of mine cheering for recognizing me, lol. embarrassing but funny.

an animated intro began for a new video of an extended the girl is crying in her latte. this was faithfully recreated 30s-style animation of a mop (?) falling into a river and stating the name of the song in a child's voice while a latte cup poured tears into the river. there was a further extended intro involving the chosen four from earthbound and pokey also talking about everything we were about to see and i was on the verge of messaging everyone i know about what i was seeing out of sheer disbelief. not sure how this was relevant in retrospect but i was absolutely not gonna complain

then began a really grand animated video showing cartoon girls throughout the ages going in semi-chronological order, in styles faithfully recreated and some being actual iconic animated girls, shown crying over various scenarios in fast transitions. i was immediately hit with 'oh they finally had the absolute budget and it is paying off so hard.' black and white animation became early 30s painted animation and czech and soviet stop motion and cutout animation, and at some point anime gets introduced and the video gets a lot more experimental as the animation starts warping and transforming on itself and i swear the extended version of the song also does some interesting and unique things, picking up more instruments and more of an orchestral flair as it progresses, getting a little bigger every time as the visuals become just plain hypnotic. sailor moon was also there crying about tuxedo mask and had a dedicated verse in the song, Somehow. it all just got so kaleidoscopic and every corner of the three screens had something to fix your eyes on, almost grotesque in a good way as the figures abstracted to the point you could barely tell they were girls crying. it was a really fascinating tribute to the medium of animation and the theme of cartoon girls crying throughout the ages over very different things was so fun. i wish i could remember what more of the extended lyrics were but i thought to myself, what we got with the cate blanchett video really was only a tiny sample huh - this is absolutely the way this song should be experienced.

the cheering was really thunderous even if sparks fans only comprised a pretty small amount of the show's total audience, those of us who were there were in shock and awe at everything we were seeing. in real life i actually woke up a few different times to turn off the fan, turn off my alarm, etc and was greatly relieved that the dream picked up right from where i left it each time i fell back asleep. i'm not usually lucky enough for that to happen. in the dream i got on twitter a few times to tell my friends, you should really be here, i'm scared that this is a dream because it's all too amazing it might not be real. i know a video for an extended veronica lake came on shortly after - i think ron and russell also showed up to thank everyone again inbetween. they were dressed in suits and looked very proud of their creation. and i guess that's the basic extent of what i remember.

Coincidental Disney Logo Trivia...

The current Disney logo celebrates the enterprise's 100th year of existence... It's a lovely, full-length intro full of neat stuff. A more ground-level tour than a pan down from a starry sky...

It first appeared, in full, before STRANGE WORLD in movie theaters this past autumn. They got the ball rolling early. The logo had also appeared - in cut-short form - in a handful of trailers at the time as well, like for the LITTLE MERMAID remake, ELEMENTAL, and the trailer for DISENCHANTED. D23 attendees were treated to it first before that...

STRANGE WORLD being the first film to bear the new logo, which will likely be used for another decade or so without the "100" next to "Disney", is curious... The film was a massive flop, and one that was largely left for dead by the company.

Wouldn't be the first time...

The first two pictures to introduce the iconic Walt Disney Pictures logo, that laid the groundwork for all logos thereafter, the very thing so many people associate with this company's movie library... Also flopped...

Those movies were... RETURN TO OZ and THE BLACK CAULDRON, both released a month apart from each other in the summer of 1985...

Believe it or not, the Disney studio never had a proper logo introduction for DECADES...

Early Disney cartoon shorts had title cards letting the audience know who the picture was coming from, which was par for the course for most shorts. Walt and Roy Disney had went through a few distributors during the late 1920s and 1930s, notably Celebrity Pictures, Columbia, and United Artists. When Walt was readying his first feature-length film, SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS, he struck a long-term distribution deal with RKO Radio Pictures. A long-defunct company, but back then a recognizable movie giant, up there with the likes of Paramount, Universal, and 20th Century Fox.

Disney films typically began with an RKO title card, not RKO's actual animated logo sequence depicting a blinking radio tower over a spinning globe. The title card would be stylized to fit with the credits sequence of whatever movie it was. For example, in PINOCCHIO, the RKO logo is carved into wood. For DUMBO, it's a circus poster-looking graphic. And so on, and so forth.

Walt and Roy then broke off from RKO, launching their own distribution company Buena Vista in 1953. Many of the Disney films released from 1954 to 1961, that were not leftover RKO-contract movies and shorts that were released well after the two parties parted ways, opened the same way. A Buena Vista title card that was stylized to look like the opening credits of the respective movie... But by the early 1960s, most Disney movies just used a standard blue gradient logo. This title card's general design layout would be used all the way up until 1984.

"Walt Disney presents" for films made before Walt's passing, and "Walt Disney Productions" for posthumous films, would be the next title card you saw after an RKO or Buena Vista logo. Walt Disney Productions became "Walt Disney Pictures", quietly, in 1983. The first film to be released as a "Walt Disney Pictures" movie was NEVER CRY WOLF. In that film, which is unfortunately a hard one to find, the first thing you see is a bar with serif text saying "Walt Disney Pictures". A title card. No official logo just yet.

Heck, the home video end of things had a logo before the film studio themselves did! Two logos at that!

Disney didn't release a new feature film in 1984 that was under the Disney name. SPLASH and COUNTRY came out in 1984, those were the first two pictures under the company's Touchstone Pictures banner, a banner meant for more adult-oriented films. Then-CEO Ron Miller founded Touchstone, and he'd be replaced by Michael Eisner by the end of the year. Following Eisner's arrival to the company, the rebrand went into full swing... The studio was officially renamed Walt Disney Pictures, the self-distribution company was still Buena Vista, as would be mentioned in a movie's end credits.

So, a new logo was in order...

The logo's first appearance, in short-form, was before a theatrical trailer for THE BLACK CAULDRON that ran in late 1984 before the theatrical re-release of PINOCCHIO. It is unknown if the longer logo preceded PINOCCHIO's opening credits for that re-release, if it did, then that would make it the 1984 Walt Disney Pictures logo.

Anyways, the first film audiences saw it before was RETURN TO OZ... But in short form, with no music!

A month later, THE BLACK CAULDRON came to theaters. It opened with the full logo, with the full 'When You Wish Upon a Star'-inspired jingle that everyone and their brother's dog knows...

Again, two movies that flopped. In fact, all of Disney's mainline 1985 movie releases that weren't Touchstone movies... Just didn't cut it at the box office. These two movies, THE JOURNEY OF NATTY GANN, ONE MAGIC CHRISTMAS... It wouldn't be until the summer 1986 releases of THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE and FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR, two films bearing this logo that did well at the box office.

The revised version of this logo, with more digital-looking glowing light effects and animation, and the arch not overlapping with the "W" in "Walt"... First appeared before a test re-release of THE BLACK CAULDRON under the title TARAN AND THE MAGIC CAULDRON in January 1990, which didn't take off in the few cities it was screened in... Later, in July 1990, it accompanied a very successful re-release of THE JUNGLE BOOK. As for a "new" movie bearing the logo that did well? WHITE FANG, released in January 1991, did okay. It wouldn't be until BEAUTY AND THE BEAST later that year, though, in November... For a genuine big hit...

For this Disney 100 logo, it looks like LITTLE MERMAID will be the first box office success bearing this new logo. It's actually their first mainline Disney theatrical release since STRANGE WORLD... Everything else has been a Marvel movie (QUANTUMANIA, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3) or a 20th Century Studios/Searchlight movie (AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER, CHEVALIER).

Funnily enough, the first film to introduce the previous long-running CGI Disney castle logo?

Big hit. HUGE, record-breaking hit... That was PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST, from summer 2006...

Maybe when Disney makes a new logo to replace this one in, say, 2040-something... It'll be for a hit movie? I dunno, just something I noticed.

I'm using the video GHOST made as a blueprint for this project, along with some help from a few friends and my own research to provide more info about each reference. With the intro out of the way, let's pick up where we left off!

1:42-1:44 - Perfect Blue

Perfect Blue is a 1997 psychological thriller film about a young actress who begins to suffer psychologically as she becomes a victim of stalking. This scene takes place near the end of the film, when an imposter of the protagonist is chasing her in order to kill her (I hope that's vague enough to prevent spoilers, but I haven't seen the film myself). The pose and expression Tamari holds in this frame of "Reckless Battery Burns" is a clear reference to the film, despite a few small differences.

1:45-1:46 - Alien 9

Alien 9 is a science fiction manga later adapted into a short OVA series. It's notable for its use of heavy gore contrasting its simple art style and monster designs. The scene pictured is from the fourth and final episode of the anime. Though Tamari lacks wings on their head, the resemblance is still undeniable.

1:47-1:48 - Kid Pix

Kid Pix is a bitmap drawing program for kids first released in 1989. The version shown in "Reckless Battery Burns" appears to be Kid Pix Deluxe 3X. A small Tamari is drawn on the computer screen using the program, which I think is cute!

1:48-1:49 - Tumblr (among others)

Kid Pix is closed on the computer to reveal this screen, which I think we all are very familiar with. This is obviously the Tumblr dashboard. However, the content of the post is a reference to the Mishapocalypse, a well-known event on Tumblr that took place on April 1, 2013, in which users would change their blog icons to the same photo of Supernatural actor Misha Collins.

I also noticed that the post count on the sidebar is 6,111, a reference to Team 6×111 themselves! The follower count is 69,420,999 as well which I thought was funny. (I'm unsure if any of the other numbers are significant, so please tell me if you know anything about that!)

After displaying the Tumblr dash for a second, the screen becomes corrupted with popups. This is where we can catch a few more references. In the top right, we can see Tamari doing the same dance as earlier from Serial Experiments Lain BOOTLEG. The text in the popup, "Let's all love Tamari", seems to reference a common phrase related to the anime, "Let's all love Lain".

The popup below that took a bit of figuring out. It's titled, "Dr. Tamari's 18-in-1 Hemp Peppermint Pure-Castile Soap". This seems to reference Dr. Bronner's soap of the same name, which is real and can be bought at Target for close to $15. The text below that is taken word-for-word from the label on the bottle, which advocated for his religious and philosophical beliefs.

A character from Yume Nikki can be seen on the third popup. This is Uboa, an iconic but hard-to-find character in the game, who can be seen in a chance event in Poniko's house.

The text beside Uboa on the popup may be referencing how the background music of the game changes to an "alarming filtered 'aah' noise" as soon as the Uboa event is triggered (via).

It's been a while! Sorry about that. I got caught up in stuff and then they changed the image limit to 30 as this was sitting in my drafts. I feel bad, but also I am kind of sipping tea, because when I was able to recognize his voice easily, because Lucifer, but... Welp... Somehow his voice never fitted Lucifer for me, both in gbf and rage of bahamut anime (didn't played the game) and generally when I head him I felt like I would like to punch him. No idea why, just his voice alone was pissing me off, the more I was able to recognize him in anime or game from sigh alone, like "it's you again, Sakurai". I have no idea why, seriously, it was few years ago and now I think it's kind of hilarious.

Tbf, I wouldn't mind recast or something, especially if it would help get Lucifer faster or something. *Sips tea* i feel so unable of emotions, like I should feel sorry and bad for those he cheated, but on the other hand... Will it change anything? My brain is rewired too much around Lucifer to really care... Oh welp, I will deal with it some day

I must say I am pretty excited for next stream. I think gbf mentioned earlier evokers 5* around this time and curious about Vikala uncap. Oh, don't they show trailer for anniversary around this time? Also I am finally getting close to my first transcend eternal and right now I am blocked by... Whorls and orbs, damnit. I think have most/can easily get most of materials for 150lvl and here I am... With not enough whorls and orbs, damnit *angy* Super Ultimate Angel Halo when with Super Ultimate Rewards, hmphf

I can't relate at all to how you feel about it since Sakurai was legit one of the first seiyuu i really obsessed over (he played two formative characters from my childhood that i was obsessing over when i was 13, ironically also paired with Suzuken, so i've had a lot of affection for his voice ever since, and seeing him paired with Suzuken in gbf again felt really on brand. All the more reasons for me to be sad), so personally i could never find he was out of place anywhere, it was just, ah, funny Sakurai following me around and giving me characters with similar thematic to haunt me!

I guess now you have justifications to your kneejerks reaction lmao

of course i feel bad for the victims of it all first and formost, especially since both mistresses came forward with a lot of health issues due to the stress the whole situation put them through it's just. another layer of horrible. I don't think it's fair to think about the outrage in the sense of "will it change anything?" i think just having compassion for the people involved is enough. We don't even have to address it per se, it's not like our voice matters, but i think it's at least the minimum before talking about our grieves for fictional matters that don't matter as much.

When it comes to his roles, it's so tricky because it's not just GBF to take into account. None of the big franchise that relies on Sakurai's name has done anything to distance himself from him, hell, between those two scandals ff7 released a new game where Sakurai took back his iconic role, and mp100 got its new season where Sakurai's character is just as beloved as ever. And we know GBF brought him back for the NY's intro with Lucio as well. And i also saw a recent anime announcement of a brand new IP hiring Sakurai, while they don't even have the excuse of trying to stay consistant with legendary characters he played.

It's like everyone is agreeing it's a very fucked up things he's done but he's too associated to their brands for them to do anything about it. It's so wild and confusing and hard to really predict where it's going to go from here.

GBF alrready announced 5* Lucifer and i don't see them announcing a recast so far, so it's really difficult to know if they even can terminate their countract with Sakurai at this point.

(To this day the only efficient seiyuu scandal solving i saw was with a3 when one of the seiyuu came out as rancid and a3 and his company literally dumped him the day after everything about him came to light, and they replaced him in the following week by the actor who played his character in the stage adaptation of the game. Then in the month that followed his voicelines were completely muted from the game and they revoiced the whole thing with the new VA in the following year. It was so swift and efficient that now when i just see them all go silent and wait for it to get quiet again, i just think they don't think it's worth addressing to start with lmao. Tho we are talking vastly different level of crimes so it is probably not the best scale for me to judge that with).

Next stream should mention things about Evokers's 5* yes, and we're all waiting for Vikala's 5* announcement. They should also show a trailer for the new anni event there, so we gotta stay tuned.

Congratz on the soon transcendance! Whorls and orbs are the worst, sorry you have to deal with it o7 this is such an Eternal grinding thing to happen lmao. More Halo jail for you rip.

So, I just binge-watched

The Sandman.

(Disclaimer: I have not read the source material (yet) but intend to. I'm merely talking about the TV show and what I read the stories and characters and their relationship and gender identity as)

Alright, so first things first: The first episode and intro immediately got me hooked! And that is saying something because not many shows achieve that

I'm often forcing myself to continue through them because I've heard the show's overall good or I saw gif sets of a later point and really want to get there...

But this was not at all the same here. The sandman definitely is one of the few shows that immediately grabbed my attention and held onto it tightly (so much so that I finished the whole season in one sitting... uuups) - God-tier show right there!

Next: The costume design, the overall setting and scenery, the animations and visual effects, the camera movement angles and lighting effects and just the composition and overall aesthetic of this show was magnificent!!!!

It just left me gaping at my screen because it was done so beautifully and felt so real and palpable! Good stuff and definitely 100% immersive!

(Aside from that one diner episode where my attention shortly drifted... but hey it was late and I'm currently feeling a little under the weather sooo forgive me...)

Now, on to the story. I loved the progression of it all and the continous build-up of suspense, as well as the way all episodes connected but also stood well individually, and that there was always room left to wonder and play detective trying to figure out what was going on, how the characters were related, and also what the characters true personality and goals and intentions are!

Especially the Nightmare wanting to be a dream was so nicely done, the way the viewer was told they were or had to be bad and up to no good, but then the first point of doubt occurred knowing that they were actually helping so how could they be bad?! In the same way there was one episode that really made me question whether Morpheus wasn't going to be the overall villain after all.

I really like this kind of story telling where you can't yet be sure who's really good and well-meaning and whose devious... And, speaking of which, in any way I liked, how the show made it clear that everyone had a reason for everything they did, even or especially for the bad stuff, and that they were ALL flawed and morally gray and not clearly good or evil. (Aside from Death my love and icon, who's 100% perfect and could do no wrong)

Damn I really dig that play with unclearly-cut morality so hard!!!

Then, let's go in to the individual characters and relationships.

As I already hinted at, Death my beloved, you are utterly gorgeous and have my heart!

Morpheus, the definition of broody, black-haired, blue-eyed male character my 25-year-old same as my past 14-year-old self still swoon and droll over. (OMG that deep voice!!! Please spare my ovaries!)

Johanna Constantine (or Clara Oswald? Hello is that you?) - just a female badass, spactacular, so hot and gorgeous it was not the hell fire that made me fan myself during that epsiode. And I want to be held at dagger point by her as well please!

The Fates - I couldn't have wished for better representation of these three almighty goddesses! So well done! (Nothing against Hercules, but what the fck Disney?!)

The biggest shout-out goes to Desire and Lucifer - my personal enby icons!!! Seriously, these two are non-binary to me, I have not read the source material yet and I'm only referring to the show, but please if I'm wrong let me bath in that amazing feeling of nonbinary represantation a moment longer!

They are both so beautiful and like, imagine what a power move it would be to make Lucifer enby because they're a freaking angel and angels don't abide to "human" laws anyway and as celestial primordial beings why would they adhere to a construct such as gender anyway? Yeah Lucifer is nonbinary. You can't change my mind.

Now, I don't know how to say this and hope this does read like I intend it to. You know how in most new "popular" Netflix productions they make sure to finally include queer characters and then it's basically just one or two and it feels a bit forced and like they only did it for morality points like "look here, we're now diverse and LGBTQ inclusive!" but it just feels a little off and overall lacking or stereotypical...?

With The Sandman, the queerness felt right. Just right. Natural. It was just there and belonged there and that's it. It got the same attention and note the het pairings or allusions did and wasn't shown as something special or new. It just was.

And I loved that so much. Because that's what good representation is supposed to look like. Not pointing with a neon sign at it but letting it appear normal and natural and unquestionable within the narrative. It's just there. Period. 🙏🏼🌈

Talking about pairings... Another thing I liked is how this show allows for so many pairings and ships right from the start!!!

Seriously when episode 1 rolled in I thought this was going to be an enemies to lovers arc between Morpheus and the Corinthian.

(still would read it as such and ship them...)

Then we moved over to Johanna Constantine being introduced and fuuuuuuck the chemistry between her and Morpheus was insane!!!! Being stuck in BL hell for such a long time I thought a het couple (other then Zutara and Lokane or Beefleaf (if you stretch it) ) would not do it for me ever again. But Morphanna might just have given me new kicks and writing juices for a het couple (no I have definitely not already scoured AO3 for fics for them).

Also you can easily make it a throuple if we reverse Rachel's tragic untimely passing (I'm still crying over here... That shit really hurt... ) 🌈❤️ and why not add Hob Gadling to the mix as well and it's a lovely polycule 😍👌🏼(though I personally read Morpheus and him as platonic first and then maybe later developing into romantic love (season 2?) but somehwere on the asexual and aromantic spectrum)

Also what in the ever loving fck was that??!!

I don't know if shipping them would count as incest seeing that they are siblings but holy freaking moly that was one spicy scene.... (that did definitely not give me several day dreams and WIP ideas and the urge to read fic for that ship...)

So now, how to finish this super long-ass post that somewhat escalated... Well, as you may have noticed I really was overwhelmed by this amazing show and am currently developing a new hyperfixation that hopefully won't interfere with my ongoing XueXiao and VegasPete brainrot... So yeah, let's see how it goes from here^^

I swear, I forgot a shit ton of other stuff I wanted to say and add (I mean I could write an essay alone on Lucifer and Death and Morphanna...), but let's leave it at that for now^^

Did you use to watch a lot of cartoons when you were a kid? Which channel did you tune in the most to do so? Any fave shows?

Tldr: yes, mostly Nick for cartoons, lots of em; SpongeBob, Winx club, totally spies, Phineas and Ferb, Tom and Jerry, Ninjago but only secretly because I felt too old to like it, Shaun the Sheep,

And then also: Simsalagrimm (2 tiny fantasy creatures going into fairytale stories and helping out), Tom and the Strawberry Marmelade Bread with Honey (Phineas n Ferb-like repetitive storytelling about Tom going to get his slice of bread but always ending up with only half yet he still found it really tasty), The Series with the Mouse (iconic edutainment show with animated in-between segments feat. Mouse and Friends; also they’re both a cultural icon and very friend-shaped)

Actual post before I realized that was a pretty big wall of text that no one’s gonna read but I put too much effort in to get rid of:

Sure did! Until Disney Channel joined later, there were really only 3 channels with cartoons available: the tax-funded mostly edutainment one, one by a company owning half the other channels, and Nickelodeon. Mostly tuned into the latter two, though the first one also had very few shows I absolutely ADORED.

But out of these three, for cartoons I mostly tuned into Nickelodeon! Mainly SpongeBob, followed by Winx Club and technically also Totally Spies, though it (like the majority of cartoons) kept jumping between Nick and Super RTL (the company one). That one had Tom and Jerry, Phineas and Ferb, and also Ninjago, but I felt "too old to be allowed to enjoy it“ so I only ever got to see it when younger folks from family were around so I could use them as an excuse XD And then there’s the tax-fund one, which is 95% original stuff and also Shaun the Sheep. Coincidentally also a fave of mine!

There’s also this cartoon called SimsalaGrimm about these two…tiny fantasy creatures of no apparent origin who go into the stories of fairytales via flying talking fairytale book to help the stories get to their Happily Ever Afters and such. Apparently it became available internationally later? Also the intro music was a banger.

Second one‘s "Tom and the Strawberry Marmelade Bread with Honey“, which is about Tom going out to get himself some strawberry Marmelade bread with honey. It’s doing this Phineas and Ferb type thing where the structure of the episode is always the exact same, but the things within it vary. In his case: wanting his sugarbomb of a bread, doing a bunch of stuff outside to assemble it, and then at the end only getting half a bread of strawberry Marmelade with honey- but when he ate the bread, it tasted just as good as a whole one!

(Except for that one time he actually got the entire bread instead of just the half as always. Little me was SHOOKETH. Usually something would happen now, but no! He got his bread!! After all this time!!! My man finally made it!! Wooooo!!)

And then there’s the third one: the mouse, the myth, the legend itself- The show with the Mouse.

Which is not actually a cartoon but an edutainment show with cartoon parts featuring the Mouse and friends in between the segments but I DO NOT care because the Mouse IS A FRIEND who DESERVES to be known! Also Shaun the Sheep was technically part of it, as it’d air at the end of the actual show.
