Hello Pebbly, I had a question I wanted to ask after reading the last chapter of Castles. What is the relationship like between Ginny and Hermione? I feel they are not as close as some people portray them in other fics. Thoughts?

hmmm. i obviously can't really comment on other people's works (although i would say that @whinlatter's beasts which i read recently does do that ginny/hermione relationship very well) but i do see them as a bit "complicated."

i think on the one hand, they're "friendly". mostly in the way that they were girls of the same age who shared a bedroom basically every summer, probably whispered "secrets" to each other until the wee hours of the morning, about boys and sex and their parents being annoying or something. the way girls do. they also seem to be quite "close" when it comes to more serious topics: we see that when ginny gets ousted from the order meeting in ootp, she's confident in the knowledge that hermione will tell her everything (although, i have always wondered whether that was just teenage bravado rather than fact). hermione also seems to know a whole lot about ginny's feelings towards harry and seems to give her advice, which obviously shows that they've probably had numerous conversations about it. when it comes to castles, ginny also clearly knows hermione well enough to know that when she goes to crash on harry's sofa after their fight, it might also be because hermione wants to mess with ron's head and make him jealous. that means they've talked about ron's feelings, there, too.

on the other hand, i also think that both ginny and hermione are people who keep important stuff close to their chests (which i know is an unpopular interpretation when it comes to ginny, who many people think is very good at talking out problems, and if that is your interpretation, then good for you, i don't mean to challenge it, i have had this conversation too many times, please let's just agree to disagree and move on) so i do think there is a bit of distance, there. whilst i think hermione might have reluctantly passed information to ginny about the order, she 1) probably filtered it into what she herself deemed "age appropriate" and 2) probably didn't pass on stuff that was personal to harry. for example, i don't think ginny ever knew about the prophecy, pre-war. she probably guessed it, cause she's not stupid, from the stuff harry said as well, but i don't think hermione would have told her. and, i don't think that post-war, hermione would talk to ginny about bellatrix, for instance. similarly, i certainly don't think ginny would tell hermione about amycus (i actually toyed with that idea for a while back when i wrote act 2, and it just wasn't working, imo).

i kind of see the two of them as circumstantial friends or "summer" friends. we've all had those. they get on and like to chat as the only two teenage girls at the burrow, but i don't think they're particularly close the other ten months of the year, when they're in school. they will talk about boys and teenage stuff like gossip, drinking, sex, etc. but i think when it comes to serious things, ginny's much more likely to confide in demelza or luna, and hermione in ron or harry. i also think that hermione finds it hard to connect with other women, probably due to the trauma of being often taunted by them, and so i think even if ginny isn't like that, hermione would sometimes find it hard to communicate.

many people have written metas about this but i also believe that especially coming out of the war, the trio have a very co-dependent dynamic where it would be hard for ginny to find her place within it. i don't buy - at all - the idea of the trio becoming a "quartet" after the war, going on double dates and all that. i think harry and ginny have the kind of relationship where it's them both, then harry and his friends, and ginny and her friends. they all "get on" but i don't think they share friends (and, that's okay. hot take but functional couples don't actually need to share everything.) and, i think ginny isn't jealous of hermione in the way that ron is jealous of harry - i don't think she has any insecurity about harry and hermione being more than "siblings", but i do think that especially in the early days of castles, when she and harry are just sleeping together and being "fun", she knows the trio, to him, is the "deeper" stuff, and that annoys her/makes her insecure a bit. i reckon it's only after she and harry establish a different kind of post-war connection that she feels less awkward about it.

i also think that when it comes to the "summer friends" hermione and ginny used to be, the war's thrown a wedge in that. even if you don't take ginny/amycus as canon, they've both had drastically different experiences of the war (both very legitimate, but still) and have both experienced things that are very difficult to talk about. they both have a tendency to self-isolate so it can be hard for them to communicate. i think that during the "eighth" year in hogwarts, there are a lot of attempts and near-misses, with them probably sometimes snapping at each other, trying to connect but never quite making it (as is actually shown in beasts). having said that, i don't think they're on bad terms. hermione is clearly very worried about ginny during her party/sleeping around phase, and during the abortion crisis, the fact that harry takes ron's side and ginny very explicitly says she will not take sides is very telling.

i think they're just very different people and frankly, had harry not brought them together, i don't think they'd be friends. ginny doesn't understand hermione's rule-abiding mentality and her coping mechanisms, and hermione doesn't understand ginny's wilderness that sometimes borderlines on self-destruction. but i also think they respect each other. ginny respects hermione's intelligence and her unwavering support of harry, and hermione respects the stability ginny's able to give harry and her place as his partner.

ultimately, i think they're "cool" with each other. but i don't think they're bffs.

Small Introduction~

Hi there! I’m back with another group! This time I’m going to try using Discord. I’m using discord since it’s easier to be in more than one place. I hope you read through everything fully and completely.

Plot~

This follows the basic plot of the movies and books Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (both movies). This follows Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger’s years throughout Hogwarts and defeating Lord Voldemort (or He Who Shall Not Be Named).

Though this also follows the story of a girl named Catalina Thorne and how much trauma she goes through. She is carrying a lot of weight by keeping a secret of information. She is possibly dating the worst person that she could by choosing Draco Malfoy. Though she loves him dearly and feels happy around him, she has to lie to him and his family every day. She doesn’t always feel comfortable around her father since he’s a death eater and may have heard of her brother. Will she ever tell Draco the truth? Find out.

Rules~

1. You must have seen all 8 Harry Potter movies and/or read all 7 Harry Potter books. I will not be including anything from Cursed Child or Fantastic Beasts or Hogwarts Mystery or Hogwarts Legacy.

2. You MUST have Discord. If you don’t and are new to it, feel free to message me. I am using discord instead of Messenger because discord allows me to be in more places in a single group than messenger can do.

3. Please stick the canon characters to what happens. If your character dies, then they must die. If they end up together with someone, you must do that. If you’re a canon that doesn’t specifically end up with anyone in particular, you may ship them with someone who wouldn’t be with those ships.

4. You may be as many characters as you would like to do as long as you can control them.

5. Please do not badger me on being an admin. I only add people as admins if I trust them and I know that they understand the whole source material.

6. Please make sure that you know how to make bots. If you need help, please feel free to message me or an admin.

7. Please make sure you are literate. Please be able to do at least 3 lines of text. I would prefer you to not use *…* to rp but I won’t scold you if you do it.

8. Ocs are allowed but I’d like to have both ocs and canons.

9. Lgbtqia+ characters are allowed along with ships.

10. Sexual themes are allowed as long as you take it to personal chats and as long as the other person consents to it.

11. If you’re going to do anything triggering, please inform before typing. Using the any of the three Unforgivable Curses may trigger any young witch or wizard’s mind and we wouldn’t want anyone to feel uncomfortable.

12. No bullying, trolling, homophobic or mean remarks out of character towards anyone!

13. If you break any rules there will be a three strike system. Strike 1: you are restricted from roleplay for one whole day. Strike 2: you are banned from roleplay for one whole week. Strike 3: you are henceforth banned from the group, never to set foot ever again.

This was torture - everything about the day so far had been living hell. He had a trial he absolutely could not be late for, four meetings that had been reschudled for close to a year (unavoidable, now), and he had to wear the fucking robes. As if all of that wasn’t enough, hadn’t wounded him thoroughly, the insult to pile on top was this: he wasn’t just on time, he was early. Early, and pissed off about it, that was Amycus as he all but stomped through the hall of fireplaces and made his way towards the open floor. But it was about to get a hell of a lot worse. He’d seen Rodolphus - that was the whole reason he’d kept storming through; Amycus didn’t want to talk to Rodolphus today, Amycus was in a mood. But he heard his name a second, then a third time, and finally he stopped short and turned. “WHAT?! Clearly, Rodolphus, I am not in the mood for one of our little chats. I have somewhere to be.” He jerked at the robes that lay over his chest, one of the few things Amycus had (though he detested everything else about it) which he could point to to show Rodolphus he was not Amycus’ better (or his equal). 

“What the fuck do you want?”

Marlene was sweating like a pig as she approached Dorcas. She looked beautiful as always. Nobody was around her. She was looking around kind of lost. Searching for someone to talk to.

If Marlene wasn't a bloody idiot, perhaps she could do this easily. But she liked Dorcas so much that she didn't want to ruin this opportunity.

Please, make this work Marlene. She told herself.

Dorcas' eyes met hers seconds before Marlene got near her. And she smiled. Marlene froze and her heart skipped a beat.

"Hi... You..."

Marlene was an idiot, Jesus Christ.

"McKinnon..."

How could someone be this beautiful?

"You look nice" Marlene said without thinking.

Dorcas' eyes set her eyes on Marlene for a second. Those perfect brown eyes of her.

"I like your sweater" Marlene pointed to the lilac fluffy sweater she was wearing.

"Thanks..."

"I mean it is a good color. You don't see much this color..." Marlene interrupted nervously "And it must be warm and soft..."

"I mean it is..."

"I used to have a blue one when I was younger. Very similar to this one..." Marlene continued quickly. Dorcas smiled amused "I used it everyday and all the time... It started to smell pretty badly... You know like sweat and old... I didn't want to get it off. I wonder why people didn't want to spend time with me..."

Dorcas chuckled.

"I mean I smelled" Marlene chuckled as well "Or maybe it was the fact that I have a weird personality. I seem angry and terrifying but I am actually pretty nice..."

Marlene noticed Dorcas bet her lip which made her hot and adorable at the same time.

"I don't know why I am saying all of these things... I am talking too much bullshit, aren't I?"

"Yeah..." Dorcas nodded.

"How embarrassing. I am sorry" Marlene chuckled. She could feel her cheeks on fire.

"Don't worry. It is adorable watching you struggle"

Now Marlene was sure that she was blushing. She swallowed. She didn't know why Dorcas made her do and say stupid things.

"What I meant was that you look great. Like nice and pretty and all" And Marlene choked with her saliva in the most stupid way ever.

Dorcas giggled and Marlene figured there was no more beautiful sound than that. God, she was so into this girl.

"Well, you look pretty too. McKinnon" Dorcas said nervously, biting her lip. Then her hand moved towards Marlene's hair. Marlene froze again "You hair looks nice today"

Marlene smiled blushing profoundly. She was thinking of something clever to say. Maybe ask Dorcas to dance or go for a drink. So they could chat more. Or maybe Marlene could make herself look even more ridiculous.

But Marlene couldn't say anything because they were interrupted.

"Dorcas!"

Dorcas' usual friends were calling her. Marlene wasn't sure if they were her friends because she hang out with them but she didn't have fun. And she never talked about them. Marlene tended to talk about her friends. Though they didn't have to know that.

Marlene wished Dorcas would stay with her. She deserved better.

"Gotta go, McKinnon"

Dorcas smiled apologetically.

Before Marlene could do something else, Dorcas kissed her cheek before going to her group of friends. Dorcas Meadows kissed her cheek!

"Shit..." Marlene whispered when Dorcas was gone, thinking of all the things she could've done better.

Marlene liked Dorcas so much. But she didn't know what to bloody do. She wished she didn't act like a twat around her. And that was the problem.

Delilah was panicked. When she got word that Amycus had been taken in for questioning, she had frozen up. Why would they want to question her husband? What had he done? She had no idea. And it didn’t help that she hadn’t been able to find him. She had no idea what was happening with her husband, she had tried to get the aurors to speak to her about what was going on with Amycus, but nobody had wanted to bother with her. She had apparated home, unsure of what to do, so she flooed her parents, and they advised her to stay in her home, and wait for Amycus. 

But that was the hardest part. She wanted to owl Narcissa and Laura and ask them to come and keep her company, but she was not sure of whether or not that was a good idea, and she didn’t want to anger Amycus when he got home, and she wasn’t sure if she wanted to truly open up to them, and let them know what was happening.

It seemed like time was ticking impossibly slow. It was sometime after three in the morning, and she was sitting in their living room, an untouched tea in her hands. She was still in the gown that she had been wearing at the ball, she had no desire to change, didn’t want to move from that spot as she waited.

And then the door opened, and there he was. She stared at him, in shock, but she wasn’t sure why she was so surprised to see him.

“What happened? Are you okay? Why did they take you? What’s going on? Are you in trouble?”

a different side to lucius comes out when he wears his mask. the softness with which he traces his wife’s hair, with which he cradles his son, with which he falls asleep --- it all FALLS away. whether it allows him to be his true self or keeps him from being that, he doesn’t know. he doesn’t care, either. eyes fall on amycus ( @carrowe ) -- who’s also donned in his dark robes -- a smirk of anticipation lying on his lips. “the plan is clear, yes?,” he asks. it’s been a while since he’s gone into the field, has mostly been doing strategic work, attending death eater meetings and being an loud voice among those below him ( there are many, after all; rookies, idiots, fools ). he likes being heard, steering plans, pushing others to commit heinous crimes. this, however, he doesn’t mind too much either. “get in, kill them, leave a warning, get home.” their target is a muggle family, parents to a mudblood and their other two children. it was too easy to locate them --- it’s almost like the ministry wants them dead.

The meetings drained her. It wasn’t in a bad way, but she still ended up feeling rather heavy after each one, her head filled with stories of fellow muggleborns ( and on occasion, halfbloods and purebloods ). It was good, to have a space for people to talk about these things, to not shove them under the rug, but it also brought up things Mary’d rather just leave under the rug to collect some dust.

Today’s meeting had been especially draining. With the memory of the crimes of February tenth still so fresh on everyone’s minds. Records had been killed, muggleborn kids had been murdered --- it caused a feeling of solemn determination among, but others seemed to be drained of faith. Mary wasn’t sure where she stood. She knew she’d never not be determined, that she’d sooner die before losing her fight, but faith was something she’d been struggling to hold onto for a long time now.

The moments after meetings were usually spent drinking something with those who wanted to stick a little longer. Sometimes they ordered pizza, other times people brought snacks --- there was a certain sense of community there that made Mary feel slightly warm. Her fingers were wrapped around a beer bottle, her other hand holding her phone -- she was typing out a quick response to an email -- before shoving it in a back pocket and approaching the newest member of this particular group. “Hey,” she said, smile curling her lips. “I think I ... forgot your name, I’m rather shit at them, sorry. What was it again?” She left a small pause for him to answer, and added, “Did you have a good time?”

@magicalypse​ asked me to use a line from the last TV show I watched as a starter ( élite )             meme. – accepting.

A glass of bubbly rosé dangled in her hand, as if she couldn’t care less if it slipped from her fingers and fell apart in a thousand shards of crystal. She supposed she didn’t. Her eyes moved to look up to Amycus -- darling, darling husband -- a smile curling her lips. Mischievous, devilish. She uncrossed her legs, kicked her bare toes up in the air to admire her pedicure before pulling her feet up beneath her. “We have to be prepared, sweet.” Sweet, a term of endearment that meant nothing, not really, but she liked the way it sounded, and that was what life was about.

Sophie took a nip from her glass, swishing the pink liquid in it -- back and forth, back and forth -- her attention span short now that she was bored. “If one of us dies, and their allegiance is revealed ...  the other can’t go down with them. So we lie.” What else did they do? Life was build on lies, a perfectly crafted castle, spun like sugar so sweet. “And please be dramatic, if they ever end up stealing my life from me. Extravagant --- paint a devilish picture.” Sophie was not planning on dying, but she was clever enough to be aware of her own mortality. And if she was to die, she wanted to go down in history. “Lies make life easier.”

Her trip to Egypt to acquire some Dark Artifacts from the smuggler’s hand before they can hit the market was rather a success. Yet, she’s already back in her station two days later, after what should have been four days trip. She hadn’t been getting too much of sleep for the past two days. As she walked through the fireplace, an idea crossed her mind. Her brother is probably working at this hour. The night is still early and she wasn’t really keen with the idea of going home just yet. So, what could’ve been better than a surprise visit?

It didn’t take her a while until she arrived and spotted her brother on his back facing her, behind the bar. She took a seat not far from him, put her belongings aside as she cleared her throat.

 “--One shot of firewhiskey, please.”

“I didn’t manage to find you the other day but happy birthday,” Frank said as he sat across from Amycus in the common room. He figured that he should at least wish Amycus a happy birthday since he had gone out of his way to say so to Alecto. Though he had more of a reason to with her. “Did you have a good time?”
