Little highlight reel from the two Zines I bought -- Survival Food is by Sunshine Gao, and Pixel Dog Zine is by PixelDogInHell. I nabbed these two off the shelf of my local comic shop, which had a lovely wall full of zines. These called out to me while I was asking after any pro wrestling comics they had.

Survival Food hits me in a personal place as a comic that has a recipe format hitting a very tough time mental-health wise in the writer/artist’s life (suicide/self harm in the following excerpts:

This page/recipe hits the hardest. And then the last page, to leave on a lets all survive note:

Zines can often have this personal/confessional flavor, which is compelling if a little raw. The last few pages really tie the flavor of the whole thing together for me:

Anyways, it’s got food, it’s got a harrowing mental illnesses in various directions, and it’s got a sense of someone trying to do their damndest to live a life they’re okay in. I’m in the audience for this zine, for sure. And I loved the art and format to boot.

Anyways, to end on a more light-hearted note, Pixel Dog Zine #1 seems to mainly be a funky absurdist/communist writer who strung together a sequence of pixel art comics. I bought it almost entirely for this joke:

As a headache-getter, a guys-in-head-rent-free haver, and a landlord-hater, this hole was made for me. Art is a little hard to read at times but has a very fun crunchy quality to it. 11/10 recommend both pieces and check out what the artists are doing now
