I like the queer worldbuilding within In Stars and Time about the subject of queerphobia, without it being super explicit, or really a big deal in the grand scheme.

I’ve talked before about how “complete escapism! bigotry doesn’t exist!” queer fiction doesn’t appeal to me at all, because I find it unrealistic and non-relatable. I don’t think ISAT exists in that category, though, despite it feeling adjacent.

I think the reason why it feels still tangible for me, and I’m able to suspend my disbelief easier, is because there is worldbuilding behind why we’re not seeing queerphobia discussed or mentioned.

All the main characters are queer in some way, so none of them would be queerphobic or keep queerphobic company.

The dominant religion where it takes place is largely based on the idea of Change, especially of the self, and this extends to gender in a very natural-feeling way. However, this is not the only religion in the world of ISAT, which I think is a huge part of why it registers as still ‘realistic’ to me.

Trans people born in Vaugarde are given 2-3 names at birth if they ever want to Change in terms of their gender, and Body Craft is a whole subset of magic. These worldbuilding elements make it so transitioning is realistically easy and normalized. (I like how they do not discuss the extent of Body Craft, too, so that trans players can project their preferred idea into the world — “they can have transitions just like mine (representation)”, “they can be reborn with basically-cisgender bodies (fantasy fulfillment),” or anything in-between.)

There are subtle suggestions that queerphobia exists, without ever diving into it. Mirabelle’s internalized aphobia is explicitly addressed, but the blow is softened via being framed as a conflict of religion. Bonnie says she saw two men kissing in a play, which causes the party to freeze up (implying heteronormativity exists), before the party’s expectations are subverted by Bonnie instead talking about the concept of kissing on-stage. And, of course, Siffrin’s general attitude about their feelings towards Isabeau — ESPECIALLY in the “Bad Touch” event — is, in my opinion, rather clearly internalized queerphobia rearing its ugly head. Though, by only showing Siffrin dealing with shame in relation to things commonly ascribed to queer people, rather than outwardly stating they feel bad for their queer desire, it more-or-less just “codes” it, rather than being explicit.

Frankly, I could make a whole post talking about the “Bad Touch” event’s coding as a queer conflict, but I’ll refrain at the moment. I’m just saying for now that I think that the way queer topics are broached in ISAT is incredibly subversive and interesting.

So. I don't mean to offend anybody but Rachel Zegler is courageous and brave in a way that I'm not sure I would be at 23 years old with my career on the line. She tweeted 'Free Palestine' on her personal account and now she is being blamed/made the scapegoat for why the Snow White movie is not doing as well as Disney predicted.

For context: Gal Gadot (of "let's sing 'Imagine' to healthworkers-fame and 'I'm proud to have served in the 1DF' fame) plays the evil Queen.

Also for context: the producer, Marc Platt, flew across the country to reprimand a 23 year old for making said tweet. He asked her to delete it. She did not. Now Marc's son has taken to social media to "expose" Rachel's selfishness. They strongly believe her tweet is hurting the box office and jobs. The movie is done. There are no more jobs or employment. Producers get a cut from box office earnings. So all they really had to say was, "Rachel's tweet is costing my father and my family money! Take it down!"

Anyways. She didn't. And hasn't.

Good for her. The absolute balls of steel tbh.

every time a new SA allegation of a favored celeb arises, i'm reminded of the absolutely soul-crushing experience of the depp/heard trial in which i learned that dozens of ppl i loved + respected + trusted were also willing to engage in the basest form of misogyny if the woman Seemed Crazy Enough. there was a horrifying 2ish weeks on this website + much longer irl where i genuinely felt unsafe voicing my discomfort as i relived something eerily reminiscent of the aftermath of my own assaults playing out on screen, commented on by true crime youtubers like it was a red sox game.

it happens time + time again with every new allegation + it's truly the most agonizing + exhausting part of being a survivor. i am begging you all to consider that survivors are watching you engage with this stuff like theater + it erodes our trust in all of you + compounds our grief.

Gale telling Durge that he's sure that Durge would have people to invite to their wedding is ofc Larian half-assing things, but it's funny to hc that Gale just had an oopsie social interaction where one says smth kinda weird/incorrect and then later realizes that it was weird/incorrect but it's too late to correct now.
