I’m sure that 2017 will give us many great records, but of them all Jesca Hoop’s “Memories Are Now“ will easily be one of my favorite ones. The music, her voice, the arrangements, everything is just beautiful. I wholeheartedly love this album, and would recommend it to anyone. Sub Pop never disappoints at delivering great music. Seriously, buy this album!

Era un concerto assai atteso dalla redazione di Coeurs & Choeurs, quello di Jesca Hoop, lo scorso martedi al Petit Bain, a Parigi. Autrice di uno degli album più intensi e riusciti dell’anno, Stonechild, Jesca è una songwriter dal repertorio ricco e variegato, all’intersezione fra indiefolk, jazz, blues e rock in senso più stretto.

La sua  esibizione è, purtroppo, passata un poco in sordina, ma nonostante cio’ e, a dispetto della giornata piovosa infrasettimanale, ad accoglierla nella sala da concerto ricavata da un battello ancorato ai bordi della Senna, a pochi passi dalla Bibliothèque Nationale Française eravamo non pochi, in maggioranza americani – suoi connazionali, ma anche molti locali. Il compito di aprire il concerto è stato affidato a un gruppo bordolese, The Queen of the Meadow, duo composto da Helen Ferguson e Julien Pras, che ha deliziato la sala con il suo folk dalle atmosfere delicate e rarefatte.

Poco dopo le 21.00 fa il suo ingresso in scena Jesca, accompagnata dai suoi musicisti. Piedi nudi, capelli raccolti e un magnifico abito di raso di seta rosa, l’americana è loquace e non è avara di scambi con il pubblico. E’ Death Row, pezzo estratto proprio dal recente Stonechild ad aprire l’esibizione. L’ultimo disco, con ben dieci titoli è il grande protagonista della serata, ma, ovviamente non possono mancare brani dai lavori precedenti, come Memories are Now, dall’album omonimo, presente anche con le bellissime Pegasi e The Lost Sky.

La voce di Jesca è bella e potente ed è sottolineata dall’evidente intesa con i membri della band, che assicurano un back up anche vocale.

Particolarmente emozionanti le versioni offerteci di Free of the Feeling, Murder of Birds e Old Fear of Father.

Fra un brano e l’altro, come un’autentica storyteller, Jesca ci racconta dei suoi esordi, del tempo trascorso nel deserto dell’Arizona, con i suoi straodinari tramonti e del ritorno in California.

Indovinata la sequenza che chiude la prima parte dell’esibizione che si apre con la splendida Red White and Black, continua con Pegasi, Shoulder Charge e All Time Low per concludersi con Passage’s End.

Una brevissima pausa e l’encore prevede due brani, Time Capsule e, interpretato a cappella dalla sola Hoop, Storms Make Grey the Sea, pezzo con cui si termina una serata riuscitissima.
