“ Woah, that guy kinda looks like me…but taller. “

“ On another note, is that other guy really rocking a Mohawk? “
She hasn’t seen a haircut like that in like…two weeks!
…Okay, maybe this is a bit rude, on her end.

Over the Nexus Deck Profile: Destiny End Dragoon
Tumblr media
Destiny HEROES are the most historically successful HERO archetype in terms of competitive representation. This is, for the most part, not due to the Destiny HEROES themselves, but Destiny Draw and the fact that they're DARK Monsters making them work well with Crush Card Virus and Dark Armed Dragon. The truth is that most Destiny HERO Monsters are not very good, and they work better as means to an End. Fittingly, their ultimate Monster isn't even considered a HERO, that being Destiny End Dragoon. Made using Destiny HEROES Plasma and Dogma, Dragoon is a formidable Monster with built-in removal AND recursion, making it hard to deal with definitively. To make it work, I've taken cues from the Diva HERO Deck in Edison Format by playing Deep Sea Diva in conjunction with Elemental HERO Absolute Zero, which, unlike its compatriots, can be made from any kind of HERO Monster, making it work well with Destiny HEROES. Deep Sea Diva works especially well with Destiny HERO - Malicious and Dark Grepher; discard Malicious to Special Summon Grepher, Special Summon a second copy of Malicious from your Deck, then Normal Summon Diva to Summon a second Diva from your Deck, and then use your four Monsters to make Level 6 and 8 Synchros. Deep Sea Diva also conveniently makes it easier to Summon Destiny HEROES Plasma and Dogma, meaning they have independent utility in this Deck in niche situations. King of the Swamp can't be used as a Fusion substitute for Destiny End Dragoon, but it can search Polymerization and be used to make Absolute Zero. What CAN be a substitute for Dragoon, though, is Elemental HERO Prisma, which copies the names of Fusion material and bypasses Dragoon's restriction. Once Dragoon is Summoned, though, Prisma has a new purpose; reveal the second copy of Dragoon to place more Destiny HEROES in our Graveyard, fueling Dragoon's revival. I don't know if I'd call this a proper Destiny HERO Deck, but this is in my opinion the best way to use them. Here's the list: MONSTERS (23): Dark Armed Dragon x1 Dark Grepher x3 Deep Sea Diva x3 Destiny Hero - Dogma x3 Destiny Hero - Malicious x2 Destiny Hero - Plasma x3 Elemental Hero Ocean x1 Elemental Hero Prisma x3 Elemental Hero Stratos x1 King of the Swamp x3 SPELLS (12): Allure of Darkness x1 Dark Hole x1 Destiny Draw x1 Future Fusion x1 Miracle Fusion x2 Monster Reborn x1 Mystical Space Typhoon x2 Polymerization x2 Reinforcement of the Army x1 TRAPS (5): Call of the Haunted x1 Mirror Force x1 Return from the Different Dimension x1 Solemn Judgment x1 Torrential Tribute x1 EXTRA DECK: Destiny End Dragoon x2 Elemental Hero Absolute Zero x3 Elemental Hero Terra Firma x1 Ally of Justice Catastor x1 Black Rose Dragon x1 Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier x1 Colossal Fighter x1 Dark End Dragon x1 Goyo Guardian x1 Red Dragon Archfiend x1 Scrap Dragon x1 Stardust Dragon x1

💖 💙 🧡 📺 🎸 🎤 🎧 💡 🍡 ✨ 💫 🦔 👽🧍😘 ☺️🎙️ ✍️ 🤔 😳 🫡
It's a good thing I've already done half of these. XP
💖 Favourite Character?
Tumblr media
Wow, that was eas-*BANG*
Seriously though, I cannot stress enough that the haha funny round moustache get a load of this the more the merrier man is my favourite character of all time. In anything. There are characters I like, there are characters I love, but Eggman will always have a special place in my heart.
I can enjoy different types of villains so long as they're fun or interesting. But we all have our preferences, and Eggman ticks every box on my personal list, and does so with effectiveness, hilarity, deadliness, and memorability. His themes are top class, his aesthetics are grade-A, his genius and creativity is legit, and ahhhhh he's so good. <3
Is it any wonder why I take issue to him being portrayed as a helpless fool? Or a defanged softie? Or a launch pad for other villains to piggyback off of? Or a Bowser-flavored father figure for characters who aren't even interesting on their own?
📺 Favourite TV show?
I assume the OVA doesn't count since it was a "movie", due to being tragically short-lived.
So by process of elimination, I choose AoStH. It's about as much of a non-Sonic cartoon as the rest, but for a Looney Tunes Lite, it is amusing most of the time, and it has Long John Botnik, so I gotta give it a pass. And while AoStH Sonic is… well, very Urkel, he was at least reasonably smart, which is more than can be said for his SatAM counterpart.
AoStH doesn't annoy me nearly as much as SatAM for its overwhelming influence that continues to this day with Archie and IDW, Boom for how everyone at the time overrated what was essentially a standard animated sitcom with Sonic characters shoehorned into the expected templates, and Prime for having an insufferably empty-headed Sonic, and everyone else being either unlikable or bland.
Underground is so forgettable to me that it loops back around to being a positive for it, since that means it doesn't actively piss me off enough like the aforementioned three, lol. As for Sonic X… I'm willing to give the first season a pass despite its heavy quantity of Chris, since I have some nostalgia for it, it has the unironically great and heartwarming Helen episode, and the questionable portrayals of certain characters (Eggman, Amy, Knuckles, arguably Sonic himself to a lesser extent) weren't as bad as they'd later become. Seasons 2 and 3 can fuck off though.
🎸 Favourite Stage Theme?
That's a certified Too Fucking Hard for me in a franchise that's full of bangers, so I'm gonna pick two zones/stages per game to make it only 90% difficult for me to choose instead of 100%.
Sonic 1: Star Light and Scrap Brain
Sonic 2: Hill Top and Wing Fortress
CD JP/EU: Quartz Quadrant Past and Stardust Speedway Past
CD US: Stardust Speedway Good Future and Metallic Madness Present
Sonic 3: Marble Garden and Launch Base
Sonic & Knuckles: Sandopolis and Death Egg
Fighters: Black Bed (Aurora Icefield) and Fire Stone (Giant Wing)
3D Blast Genesis: Rusty Ruin and Volcano Valley
3D Blast Saturn: Rusty Ruin and... the Special Stage
Sonic R: Can You Feel The Sunshine and Living In The City
SA1: Windy Hill and Tricky Maze (THIS ONE WAS EXTREMELY HARD TO NARROW DOWN TO JUST TWO)
SA2: Deeper (Death Chamber) and Space Trip Steps (Meteor Herd)
Advance 1: Ice Mountain and Egg Rocket
Advance 2: Music Plant and Techno Base
Heroes: Ocean Palace and Final Fortress
Battle: Holy Summit (arena) and Death Egg (arena)
Advance 3: Cyber Track and Chaos Angel
ShtH: Circus Park and Final Haunt
Rush: Ethno Circus (Mirage Road) and What U Need (Dead Line)
Riders: Metal City and Digital Dimension
'06: Aquatic Base and End of the World
Secret Rings: Let the Speed Mend It (Sand Oasis) and High and Broken (Levitated Ruin)
Rush Adventure: Haunted Ship and Sky Babylon
Zero Gravity: Aquatic Capital and Gigan Rocks
Unleashed: Rooftop Run Night and Skyscraper Scamper Day
Black Knight: Deep Woods and... actually, that's the only level theme I really like in this game, the rest are pretty forgettable
Colours: Planet Wisp and Aquarium Park
Generations: Speed Highway and Crisis City
Lost World: Sea Bottom Segue and Hidden World
Mania: Press Garden and Titanic Monarch (THIS ONE WAS ALSO HARD)
Forces: Moonlight Battlefield and Mortar Canyon
TSR: Roulette Road and Sand Road
🎤 Favourite Vocal Track?
I'll be unconventional and go with Live Life. Ironically, I don't care for the other vocal tracks in Black Knight, as I find them generic and unmemorable, but Live Life is a really uplifting one that I think deserves more appreciation.
I've always had a particular fondness for What I'm Made Of as well. And despite preferring the JP soundtrack for CD on the whole, Sonic Boom is still really catchy and infectious.
🎧 Favourite overall soundtrack?
How am I meant to narrow it down to one?
The answer: I can't, so instead I'll just list the ones I consider to be S-tier. Note that I am indeed taking the question to heart and judging them by how strong I consider them overall, rather than singling out one or a couple of tracks specifically. Otherwise I'd be listing the entire non-Chronicles catalogue. (The Last Scene in SA2, Aquarium Park in Colours, some tracks in ShtH…)
Sonic CD (JP/EU)
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Sonic 3D Blast (Genesis)
Sonic Adventure 1
The Advance trilogy
Sonic Mega Collection (yes, I'm serious)
Sonic Heroes
Sonic '06
Sonic Rush Adventure
Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity
Sonic Unleashed
Sonic Mania
Team Sonic Racing
💡 Spinoff you’d like to see?
Dr. Crusher's Negating Mandating Machine™.
Serious answer, I'd like another Tails game of some sort, in the hopes that it would let the fox regain some of his fandom respect in a legitimate, non-Wildly Inconsistent-speech way.
I'd also be open to a Blaze spinoff, since there's a lot you could do with her world, and maybe it'd allow us to finally see Marine again under a pen that's hopefully not Flynn's. And since Blaze herself is still one of the most popular and less controversial Modern characters, I can't see a lack of audience being an issue.
🍡 Classic, Adventure, or Boost Gameplay?
Classic overall, but a little of Adventure as well in the form of SA1 and the Advance trilogy (even if the latter is semi-Boost if anything).
✨ Dream Sonic Game?
I've always preferred the S3&K/Mania/Advance approach to alternate characters, because I feel they strike the delicate balance of being different enough to offer something unique for each character, but still consistent enough to not detract from the overall style of gameplay. They also handle the matter of story completion the best IMO: if you want to stick with one character for the adventure, you can actually do so, rather than be forced to juggle different styles in one story (SA2), or for the game to suddenly hand over the controls to someone else halfway through the stage ('06).
That's honestly about it, aside from the obvious stuff (good soundtrack, pleasing aesthetics, etc). I don't think I'm impossible to please in that regard. The only other bullet point I can think of is that I'm not inherently opposed to different goals for different characters, but it's important that they don't come at the expense of the core gameplay. For example, I'm alright with Knuckles' treasure hunting conceptually, since you're still platforming and going fast like you would in any other installment. It's when you throw in the dipshit SA2 radar that it becomes a problem.
🦔 Favourite version of Sonic? (the character)
Game Sonic. The original, and the best.
I still have issues with him, but after seeing writers miss the point with him again and again in adaptations, with his portrayal ending up being obnoxious for one reason or another in the process, it's made me grow to appreciate the good qualities and low-key nuance of the original template.
🫡 Coldest Sonic Take?
My opinions seem to always be in opposition to that of the overall fandom's, so to think of one that's actually popular… hmm.
S3&K is still liked, right?

My top 10 list for who I WANT as DLC in Smash
We’re reaching the end of an era. Smash Ultimate’s DLC is going to end eventually, with four more characters to be announced. They could release some kind of ‘Echo Pack’ in the future, which I would be hyped about (They didn’t really do much with the echo fighter mechanic), But I have a feeling that after this, there won’t be any more. So I wanted to post my list of who I, specifically, would like to see in the game.
This is not based off of likelihood, as some of these characters probably don’t even have a chance of making it in. I just think they would be neat.
Full list under the cut, counting up from #10
- Papyrus (UNDERTALE)
Okay, so hear me out.
We got the Sans mii skin, and that was by far one of the most popular mii skins since Geno, probably. People were more excited for the Sans mii skin than Terry Bogard and maybe even Banjo. They probably made a lot more money than expected from it. So why not try it again?
And while Sans is the popular character, he definitely is not a fighter. He’s a lazy, laid back character that just wants to have fun, but he’s far too weak to go into an all-out battle without risking his own safety.
HOWEVER!
Sans’s brother, Papyrus, is the polar opposite. He’s dedicated, hardworking, and can take quite a few hits. He’s got plenty of moveset opportunity. And it would be another indie rep, which is really really good for someone like me, who wants to go into game design.
Another thing: When we got the Cuphead mii skin, we also got Cuphead Spirits. They could have easily done that with Undertale, there’s enough characters. So maybe they’re saving it for a DLC Spirit board? I don’t know, just a theory.
He would be primarily a ground-based fighter, with projectiles that could crawl across the stage like that one sparky item. He could also use his blue attack, which could be good for an easy spike on airborne characters. And, who knows, maybe for his final smash we could finally see his special attack.
I really enjoy Undertale, and seeing Sans as a mii skin made me super happy. Getting a whole fighter from the series would be even cooler.
- Paper Mario (Super Paper Mario)
Nintendo, we’ve got three whole Links in this game, but only two Marios? Preposterous!
With that being said, Super Paper Mario was one of my favorite Wii games (Although I didn’t play it until very recently) And it’s a very popular series. He’s essentially his own character separate from Mario at this point. The games have so much lore put into them, and we already have a Paper Mario Stage in the game, so maybe we could get Dimentio’s dimension, or the Origami Palace or something.
He’s been in enough games and done enough crazy things to earn a pretty diverse kit for himself. He could use Pixils, the 1000-Fold arms, or even summon Paper Bowser, Peach and Luigi for some attacks.
I think he would be super fun to play. I’m terrible at vanilla Mario, but I think Paper Mario would be a good fit for the game AND be a super good-feeling character. However, this comes from a G&W main, so take from that what you will.
- King Boo (Luigi’s Mansion)
I 👏 want 👏 more 👏 villains 👏 in 👏 Smash! 👏
King Boo is a staple of the Luigi’s Mansion series as well as being an enemy for Mario in some games like Sunshine. He’s the Big Bad Evil Guy for Luigi.
And I DEFINITELY want him in this game.
It’s not so much the character himself, although King Boo is really good, I want him in for his kit. Think about it. A large character but with floaty jumps like Jigglypuff and an aerial based moveset AND a teleport? He’d be ruthless. And really fun. And that’s what I’m looking for in a character.
- BOTW Zelda (Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity)
Yes, I know. “But Worm, the Zelda we have now is annoying and awful, and you say you want ANOTHER one?!?!?” Well, you’re half right.
Yes, Zelda is known for her darkness-sealing powers in BOTW, BUT, in the recent Age of Calamity game, her moveset for almost have the game revolves around the Sheikah Slate. She uses it creatively, hopping around on ice and whirling metal slabs around with a magnet. And I think that would be a SUPER cool moveset for Smash Bros.
And who knows, maybe they would call back to older games and allow her to switch to using her powers, like Zelda used to change into Sheik.
She would be very technical, with her attacks being powerful but with some startup, almost similar to Snake of all characters. And for her final smash she could use a Weak Point Smash or they could bring back Bow of Light (Which was MUCH more fair than the current one, by the way). She’d be fun, and that’s what I want.
- Maxwell (Scribblenauts)
Maxwell is from Scribblenauts, a game where you have to solve puzzles by writing words in a notebook and those words coming to life. So he’s work in the same way in Smash, although much more randomized.
For his neutral special, maybe he could write a random item and it shows up in his hand. That would be funny AND cool, and it’s possible (because Peach does the same thing with Turnips!). He could use projectiles but also have plenty of close range options, and for a Final Smash he could use the Meteor, which in the game clears the screen of living things. Brutal! He also uses Adjectives on both his creations AND himself, so maybe for some moves he could effect the other opponent with a poison or freeze effect.
Would he be banned in competitive play? Yes. Would he still be fun? Definitely!
- Jibanyan (Yo-Kai Watch)
I may be in the minority here, but I REALLY liked Yo-Kai Watch as a game. It may seem like a cheap Pokemon ripoff, but the gameplay is nothing like it at all. You’re given a map to explore and various objectives within the map, and the battle system is really creative and fun. It’s actually the inspiration for some of my own games. Yo-Kai watch deserved more credit than it got.
Jibanyan is the poster boy for the series (and also has the saddest backstory of any cat-based character ever), and mainly attacks with both his paws and fire attacks. He could have fire-based moves and would almost play similar to Pichu. His final smash could be Paws of Fury, his soultimate move, that would hit like Donkey Kong’s final smash as a flurry of blows.
This series is really well made and thought out, and it deserves more than it got. So please put my boy in Smash, I’m begging you.
- Specter Knight (Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment)
Okay, yes. I know Shovel Knight is the main character of this series. But again, hear me out.
Specter Knight is either the first or second boss you encounter in the main Shovel Knight game, and he’s already got some moveset potential from that alone. However, he also had his own story mode, Specter of Torment, ad let me say, that is a phenomenal game. I’d go so far as to say it’s better than the main Shovel Knight game itself. His controls are quick and easy to pick up. And he has a whole bunch of special abilities you can get as the game progresses, such as a boomerang or even a shadow clone.
His smash moveset would pull most of the specials from the unlockable items he can get, leaving room for an incredible spacing game as well as a good aerial defense, as Specter Knight can both float and do a Dash Slash through enemies for some extra air time.
Shovel Knight is the main character, but Specter Knight obviously has the most soul put into him (Pun not intended). And, again, he’d be fun to control.
- Master Hand / Fighter Hand (Super Smash Bros. Series)
This is mostly me just being mad at the game for giving us a playable Master Hand, but only once. We couldn’t have even gotten a Master Mode in extras, huh?
Yes, yes, I know Master Hand is the staple boss character for Smash Bros. He’s been in every game, for crying out loud! I’m honestly surprised it took them this long to give us a playable Master Hand. But this leads into my idea:
A new hand, made specifically to fight in Smash Bros, called Fighter Hand.
Yes, it’s cheesy. Yes, it’s stupid. But hey, it would be fun.
He would have scaled-down versions of Master Hand’s moves, with mainly projectile-based specials and tilts. He would be floaty, although introducing a flying character would be interesting to see how they balance it. For a final smash, maybe they could bring back Master Core from Smash 4 for a Giga Bowser-esque punch.
- The Knight (Hollow Knight)
Hollow Knight is an Indie Game that I never finished (I’m working on it, okay?) that’s kind of like Metroid in the way it’s played. It's also a very popular game, and I like bugs, so they get the number two spot because I like him.
And the special Soul moves you unlock translate well into Specials. Platformers always translate well into Smash, so he would work very well in the game. I don’t know what their moveset would be (as I haven’t finished the game yet), but I know they would be a small, fast character that mainly uses their nail to attack like a sword.
And my most wanted character in Super Smash Brothers: Ultimate is...
- Beatrix LeBeau (Slime Rancher)
Tumblr media
Okay, look. I’m aware this has zero chance of happening. Slime Rancher was never the most popular game, and Nintendo has never mentioned it ever. But it’s one of my favorite games, and I just think Beatrix would be an incredible character in Smash Bros.
She would use her jetpack to recover, she would shoot plorts as projectiles, use he vacpac to suck up both fighters and projectiles, and maybe shoot a boom slime as an explosive and unpredictable bouncing hazard. Her smash attacks and aerials would use the various slimes you can vacuum up and feed in the game, like the Rad Slime and Rock Slimes. She would be really good offstage and onstage with her weakness being her speed.
She could bring a LOT to this series, and it would be another inspirational indie rep. And, hey, Minecraft Steve got in. Who knows at this point.
Anyway, there’s my list. Feel free to argue with me or explain why Geno should be on my list (I will not care) in the comments or reblogs, this list is not changing unless I play some new game that I feel should be represented.

Game of Thrones: Battle of Winterfell Dead Pool
*mostly conjecture, but spoiler warning to cover bases*
Ok, so: after watching 8.02, I’ve been thinking a lot about the looming largest battle sequence out to film, and obviously given the happy moments in the lead-up, a lot of our faves are gonna bite it next week. So I wanted to put my thoughts to paper, as it were, and talk about the major players, where they’ll be, and what could happen to them.
Jon Snow
Location: atop Winterfell battlements, then eventually in the thick of it, because Jon
Outcome: ALIVE. C’mon, I barely have to say anything here. Jon Snow/Aegon Targaryen is far to pivotal to the titular game to die here. Plus he’s gotta sort things out with his girlfriend/aunt Daenerys. Speaking of...
Daenerys Targaryen
Location: based on previews, she’s gonna be all over Winterfell: atop the battlements, viewing the battle from afar in the nearby hills, and even in the TOTALLY 100% SAFE NOT-AT-ALL DANGEROUS CRYPTS
Outcome: ALIVE. Literally same reasons above. She’s key to the Game and she’s gotta deal with Jon’s poorly timed bomb drop. Plus she’s gotta survive here to potentially become a villain herself down the way as the Mad Queen/Night Queen
Ghost
Location: probably three feet from Jon at any given moment
Outcome: DEAD. “Whaaaat? You mean they’d really bring Ghost back for five seconds this week, just to kill him next week???” You’re goddamn right they would! And for a very utilitarian reason that every major crew member has said many times over: those Direwolves are hella expensive to make (somehow more so than dragons? I’m guessing because they still have to use live wolves, so getting the animal to behave just so, and then enlarge them in post is likely a bigger pain than straight CGI? Anywho...) so Ghost is gonna be badass and rip some throats out, probably save some asses, and then get the shit wrecked out of him like Summer did.
Sansa Stark
Location: She’s gonna be in an interesting spot, too bold to hide in the crypts, but not a fighter. So she’s gonna probably try (and fail) to stay high and dry.
Outcome: ALIVE. I don’t have as strong an argument for her survival, but I just have a feeling. She didn’t have any serious revelations or resolutions in 8.02, aside from flirting/fighting with Dany, so her death wouldn’t be AS heartbreaking as some others.
Arya Stark
Location: in the battle with her new weapon, though also from previews she ends up in the crypts (and looking fucking terrified)
Outcome: DEAD. It hurts to say this, but Arya is very likely going to be done saying “Not today” to the God of Death. She banged the hell out of Gendry KNOWING THIS COULD BE HER LAST NIGHT ON THIS PLANET, and ignoring that cardinal cliche, something in the crypts is going to scare her shitless, and to do that to Arya, it’s gotta be something BAD (more on that later) **EDIT: I also think her death next week would go down as the ultimate prank, because when she went on Jimmy Fallon and “accidentally” let loose a spoiler as an April Fool’s joke, the (supposedly) fake spoiler was that Arya died in episode 3. What greater troll could there be than her fake spoiler not being fake at all?
Bran Stark
Location: in the Godswood, seated in the perfect spot to make awkward eye contact with the Night King
Outcome: ALIVE? The situation with Bran and the Night King is interesting, and undoubtedly won’t be as cut-and-dry as “two men enter, one man leaves.” Like, obvious the Night King ain’t going down here, but I feel like the Three-Eyed Raven is too cosmically important to not survive this. So I feel like if/when these two meet, it may not end in death, but change of some sort. (If the Night King even shows! Speaking of...)
Night King
Location: outside Winterfell *MAYBE*
Outcome: ALIVE (generally speaking). As I said before, the Night King is too big a deal to go down here without more of Westeros dealing with him first. So if Bran’s plan works, something more nuanced is gonna go down in the Godswood. But here’s the thing: what if the Night King isn’t even here? In the preview we see a line of White Walkers on horseback, seemingly in the lead position of the army. But no Night King, no Viserion. He knows where Bran is, so he’s in no rush; what if he’s taken his dragon (and some of the army) on past Winterfell, marching instead directly on King’s Landing? Bran had previously seen a vision of a dragon’s shadow darkening the skies of King’s Landing - what if this was the Night King, not Daenerys?
Theon Greyjoy
Location: in the Godswood with Bran and the Ironborn (aka the bait)
Outcome: DEAD. Theon has had a very very strong arc over this show: we’ve liked him, hated him, felt beyond bad for him, and then grew to care for him again. But with this week and Sanaa’s hug, his arc is complete. Plus, if the Night King does show, he’s at GROUND. ZERO. He’s fucking toast mate.
Jaime Lannister
Location: on the flank with Brienne and Podrick
Outcome: ALIVE. Our second-favorite Lannister has had a lot of character development (which usually means a tombstone), and he’s not a super capable fighter on a dangerous fucking part of the field with Brienne. Despite all of that, the Kingslayer’s probably gonna see the other side of this battle, because he’s gotta A) deal with Bronn coming for him and Tyrion, and B) fulfill the prophecy Cersei has obsessed over and be the “little brother” that kills her.
Tyrion Lannister
Location: In the completely ironclad safe crypts
Outcome: ALIVE. I’m gonna talk more about the crypts later on separately, because it’s gonna get a bit contradictory. Obviously the crypts aren’t safe, but there are a solid couple of charcters down there that I think will make it out. Tyrion’s safety is twofold: A) they made all that fuss of everyone, especially Jorah, telling Dany that Tyrion should remain her Hand. That would be a lot of wasted runtime if he dies here, and B) like his brother, Tyrion currently has a former traveling buddy coming for him with a crossbow, and Game of Thrones is known for many things, anticlimax not being one of them.
Samwell Tarly
Location: on the battlements, ready to go balls-out, apparently.
Outcome: ALIVE. Despite Sam being a not-at-all capable fighter, I think he’s going to live by simple fact that somebody has to finish that book at the Citadel about the history of Westeros to present day (and totally title it A Song of Ice and Fire), but he’s also gonna have to do some mourning of his own...
Gillie
Location: those ironclad crypts of solitude
Outcome: DEAD. Gillie and Sam has their happy moment, and frankly, Sam is more important than her. So she’s gonna die, and to distract himself from the grieving process, Sam is gonna lock himself away in the Citadel to finish that damn book.
Jorah Mormont
Location: probably protecting Dany, then breaking off at some point when it goes to shit
Outcome: DEAD. Jorah’s has quite a ride, in and out of the friend zone with Dany from the beginning, and as of now he’s accepted his place and even gone to bat for Tyrion as the better man for his job. Couple that with his reunion with his family, and Sam passing on his family sword to him, and Jorah is going down swinging (and those swings are probably gonna save Sam’s ass, because it would be poetic to save the man who gave him the sword)
Sandor “The Hound” Clegane
Location: in battle somewhere (ideally far from fire, if he had his way)
Outcome: ALIVE. Though the Hound has solid development and actual dimension as a character this week, he’s gonna see it through for one simple reason: CLEGANEBOWL! This is something book fans AND show fans have been teased with for years, and this battle is likely the last hurdle between the Hound and burning his undead brother right the fuck back.
Varys
Location: the crypts, because lol at the idea of Varys fighting and not hedging his bets
Outcome: DEAD? I was more certain of his survival initially, because come onnn it’s Varys! The Spider played things in the shadows better than Littlefinger, and always knows how to avoid the God of Death. However, since my first thoughts, I was reminded that Melisandre mysteriously told him he would die in Westeros. So, the crypts could likely become his tomb.
Gendry
Location: swinging a big ass hammer somewhere, no doubt.
Outcome: ALIVE. I debated on Gendry’s survival for a bit, considering he was recruit to smith, and he did his smithing (not to mention the horror movie trope of “you fuck, you’re fucked.”) However, I think he’ll see it through just because he’s still Robert Baratheon’s son, and could therefore complicate the line of succession for the Iron Throne once Cersei is finally knocked off.
SER Brienne of Tarth
Location: on the flank with Jaime and Podrick
Outcome: DEAD. Also painful, but after this week, the writing is on the wall is tears and giant’s milk for our favorite honorable knight. She is officially a knight of the seven kingdoms, saved Jaime’s ass from a barbecue, and noted that she’s fulfilled all of her oaths. She’s going down, but she’s not gonna go down easy (probably going to be the reason Jaime survives).
Podrick Payne
Location: on the flank with Brienne
Outcome: DEAD. Pod’s golden pipes and magic cock can’t save him here. He’s noticeably better with a sword now, but even Brienne said he’s not there yet. Plus he got to sing that song to the drunk sharing circle. Pod’s going down, and I’m betting he’ll be one of the first.
Grey Worm
Location: in the battlefield somewhere nasty
Outcome: DEAD. Not much to say here: Grey Worm promised to take Missandei away after the battle, wherever she wanted, and they can be happy on a beach. He may as well have said he’s two weeks from retirement.
Missandei
Location: the danged ol’ crypts man. Can’t say much else here without repetition.
Outcome: ALIVE. This is by a razor-thin margin in my head, but everyone’s favorite translator is going to live for one reason and one reason alone: she’s the perfect candidate to cry over Grey Worm’s body after the dust settles. Because let’s be honest: they made the cardinal mistake of talking about their futures, so (at least) one of them gotta die, and Grey Worm is a soldier on the field.
Dolorous Edd
Location: atop the battlements, for now anyway.
Outcome: Edd’s DEAD, baby. He survived the wall coming down, made it back to warn his friends, and hugged it out. Jon said it himself: the Night’s Watch has no purpose now, meaning Edd has nothing to be Lord Commander of. His watch is ending next week.
Tormund Giantsbane
Location: somewhere in the thick of it, with a belly full of giant’s milk
Outcome: WILD CARD. Honestly, I couldn’t peg down Tormund, and it’s just because he’s so damn bonkers. Like, he survived the wall, and we got more insight to his (alleged) upbringing, and his surprisingly liberal ideals when it came to Brienne’s status, which could spell death. But he’s just such a crazy bastard that if anyone could defy the writing on the wall, it’s him.
Davos Seaworth
Location: on the battlefield, giving everyone a good what for
Outcome: DEAD. He’s had a good run, but it’s time to say goodbye to our dear Onion Knight. He said it himself: he’s been through a lot of battles and he’s not even sure how he’s made it. He’s been a mentor, but they’ve all gotta spread their wings, plus he had those moments with the reluctant militiamen and the adorable Shireen stand-in. He’s going out like a damn champ.
Beric Dondarrion
Location: somewhere out there with his medieval lightsaber
Outcome: WILD CARD. I couldn’t pin down Beric because he’s in a very unique position: Rhllor the Lord of Light has brought him back from the dead 13 times. Despite his weapon being covered in something very effective against the undead, there’s no doubt he’ll fall in battle. My question is: which side will he fight for when he gets back up? The Lord of Light could bring him back, but the White Walkers also have a knack for putting corpses back on their feet. Or even crazier, will he become some sort of halfbreed, with tht eyepatch covering a glowing blue eye? (Probably not, but it’s a fun idea)
Lyanna Mormont
Location: the front? The crypts? I don’t know, she does what she wants.
Outcome: WILD CARD. I’m leaning slightly towards the dead end of the scale with Lyanna, because despite how sharp her tongue is and how big her balls are, she’s still a small child fighting an army of zombies. She’s a badass and could make it, but she’s a child and could just as easily eat it.
Bronn
Location: somewhere between King’s Landing and Winterfell
Outcome: WILD CARD. I can’t even say if Bronn will show up for this battle, but we do know he’s on his way with a big ass crossbow called “poetic justice” (according to Cersei). So he totally could show up and off one or both Lannister brothers while they’re distracted by zombies, or he could learn the true meaning of friendship and forsake the money to help out. And possibly die saving them. Or he won’t even make it there until afterwards. Who knows here man.
Now, a little more on the crypts, and why they gave me problems. So, they put the non-combatants and the children in the crypts, because it’s underground and by all accounts, safe. However, sollowing cinematic rules of foreshadowing, repetition is the surest sign that something’s important. EVERYBODY said the crypts are safe, repeatedly. Couple that with the shots of a very frightened Arya running from something, and it’s shaping up to be bad news bears down there. Many have guessed it, but for the sake of thoroughness, here’s the issue: the crypt is full of DEAD STARKS, and we all know how fond the White Walkers are of raising the dead. Provided they’ve got the range, Arya could be facing down the dead wearing the faces of her family. And given that, we could figure who it’s likely going to be. Ned is headless (plus it’s been mentioned that his bones were returned, implying there’s not much to bury), Robb is also headless and possibly not even buried in the family crypt, considering his body was paraded around on horseback with his wolf stitched onto his neck, so aside from ancient Starks, that leaves two candidates: Rickon (which, let’s be real, nobody cares about him and he’s not that intimidating either), and Catelyn. We don’t know if she made it to the crypts either (because Red Wedding), but she’s the strongest candidate for a truly unsettling foe for Arya, as well as an in-point for the TV show to introduce a skewed and twisted interpretation of Lady Stoneheart from the books into the show.
So yeah, with this information the Crypts could have a much higher principle death toll, but I think Arya being in the crypts sets up a heroic sacrifice scenario where she can ensure the other (important) people get out alive.
With a score of 11 - 11 - 4 the Battle of Winterfell is shaping up to be a potential Thanos Snap for our cast of characters next week. I can’t say how right or wrong I am on this, but this is the most thought I’ve put into predicting character deaths since Negan whistled his way onto the Walking Dead. So regardless, I’m excited to revisit this after the episode goes up on Sunday!

Gajeel x Lyon + challenge
Two years after his first, Gajeel found himself participating in the Grand Magic Games once again.  The preliminaries had been beyond easy this year, but somehow Fairy Tail’s other team that had been entered had failed it - and had nearly drowned in the process.  Luckily, Gajeel had had plenty of experience nearly being drowned by Juvia over the years - not to mention that aquatic demon from Tartaros - so passing had been a simple matter for him.
He was greatly looking forward to showing off this time around.  Natsu’s stunt during their double battle still stung the iron dragon slayer’s pride, and he intended to rectify the slight in this go around.  So it was little surprise to anyone on the team that he volunteered for the first group event, a game called simply “Glacier.”
Entering the arena to a decent amount of fanfare, Gajeel carefully sized up his fellow competitors for the event.  He didn’t recognize half of them, but the ones he did he knew he needed to watch out for.  There was the swordswoman from Mermaid Heel - the one with gravity defying magic that had nearly fought Erza on equal terms two years ago.  The snow mage from Blue Pegasus, a former Rune Knight like Gajeel.  And the ice wizard from Lamia Scale, the one that had pursued Juvia relentlessly.
“Now that all participants are on the field, it’s time to announce the rules of the game!” the pumpkin headed referee stated with glee, bouncing from foot to foot.  “In ‘Glacier,’ we have a special treat for you all...”  With a wave of his hand, Mato ushered in four glowing magic circles.  From within them, sprouted towering columns... of beautiful, gleaming blue ice.
“Your task is to carve these into whatever you choose!” Mato informed them.  “Make anything you want!  The sky is the limit!  Within reason, that is.  Please do not abuse the contest creators’ goodwill by making something crass.  Aside from that, let your imaginations flow!  But keep in mind that the judges each have their own particular taste, and that will affect their decisions accordingly.”
Frowning, the ice wizard contemplated the pillars.  “Excuse me, if we will each be carving these, why are there only half as many as there is participants?  Will some of us not be allowed to carve?”
“An excellent question!  The reason is that, for this game... you will have to cooperate with someone in order to get it accomplished!  Drawing straws will determine the matchups, and the points awarded will be split evenly between you.  Winning team gains ten points, second place gains six, third place gains two, and last place gains none.  Individually, that’s five, three, one, and zero points you may gain for your guild.”
“Interesting,” the Blue Pegasus mage said.  “I chose to participate because of the event’s name, but I might be at a disadvantage here. However... if my partner is sufficiently skilled, we can sill potentially gain the top place.”
“Correct!” Mato exclaimed.  “Now, without further ado, let’s decide the teams.”
Gajeel stepped forward first, with a triumphant grin on his face.  “Let’s see if my partner can even keep up with my first-rate artistry.”
“An excellent attitude!” Mato stated.  “Once everyone is finished drawing, find the other participant with the same number, and the ice block that is labeled the same.”
He came away clutching a straw that blinked with a magical 4.  Walking over to the block, he was soon joined by the ice wizard from Lamia Scale.
“Hello there.  I don’t believe we’ve ever spoken before,” the white-haired man said congenially.  “I’m Lyon Vastia, of Lamia Scale, and an Ice-Make mage.”
“Gajeel Redfox, the Iron Dragon Slayer.  From Fairy Tail,” Gajeel responded, shaking the other man’s proffered hand.  “With your magic, I bet you’re pretty good at things like this.”
Lyon nodded.  “Indeed, I am.  With your ability to cut the ice easily, this challenge is as good as won.”
Their conversation was cut short by Chapati announcing the partnerships for this challenge.  “On Column One, we have quite the cute team-up!  Mattan Ginger and Nalshe Mikagura from Twilight Ogre and TItan Nose make quite the beautiful team, wouldn’t you say?”
“Quite so,” agreed Arcadios, the second judge on the panel.  Yajima had declined to be a judge this year, claiming his age made the endeavor more difficult with each passing year.  So instead, the knight was chosen to fulfill the vacant spot.  “Although they do pale in comparison to the princess, in my humble opinion.  What do you think, Mr. Roderick?”
Roderick Snodden, renowned art critic and guest judge for the first day, nodded solemnly.  “They are indeed easy on the eyes.  But can they bring forth beauty through a vastly different medium, such as this?  I’m looking forward to seeing what they will bring forth from the ice.”
The women waved enthusiastically at the crowd, all smiles and charm, and the stadium went absolutely wild as Mattan blew them a kiss.
“On Column Two,” continued Chapati, moving along, “we have Kagura Mikazuchi of Mermaid Heel and Dobengal of Sabertooth.  I must say that I’m really looking forward to this one.  Both of them are renowned fighters, after all, with similarly serious dispositions.  I’m sure whatever they carve, it will be amazingly detailed.”
“Their matching aesthetics in terms of their wardrobe is also quite promising to me,” commented Roderick.
“I agree as well,” stated Arcadios.
“On Column Three, we have the male counter to the team up on Column One!  With Eve Tearm of Blue Pegasus and Mace Orlando of Phoenix Grave, the male gender is certainly being well represented in the beauty department as well!”
“Indeed,” Arcadios and Roderick said in unison, pleased smiles on their faces, not able to get much in edgewise around the fevered screaming that had erupted from the stands.  Both of the male contestants had quite the following.
“And finally, on Column Four, we have... Gajeel Redfox representing Fairy Tail, and Lyon Vastia representing Lamia Scale.”
“Is it just me,” Lyon commented under his breath, “or was our team’s announcement lacking the vigor of the others?”
“I must say that Gajeel doesn’t particularly strike me as the artistic type,” Roderick stated bluntly, disinterest written clearly on his face.
“Perhaps his partner will balance it out somewhat,” interjected Arcadios.  “He is, after all, a maker mage.  Imagination and craftmanship go hand in hand, there.”
“So long as the brute doesn’t drag him down.”
The dragon slayer spluttered, and shook a fist at the judges box.  “No artistic sense?!  I’ll show you artistic sense!  Get down here and I’ll make real pretty work of your faces!”
“Calm down,” cajoled Lyon, sweat running down his face at the display.  “We need to win this for our guilds, so lets not lose sight of that goal.  Besides, the best revenge would be to shock and amaze them, wouldn’t you agree?”
Although he grumbled, Gajeel backed down.  “Alright, let’s do this.”
Introductions completed, Mato raised his arm, a giant timer appearing above the stadium.  “Teams!  Begin on my mark...”  The mascot dropped his arm.  “Go!”
The teams conferred briefly, but it wasn’t long until ice chips began to fly through the air as the carving contest got under way.  The judges began to commentate on the progress of the groups.
Meanwhile, Lyon and Gajeel found themselves at an impasse.
“We have to consider the column’s dimensions,” Lyon informed Gajeel, his brows furrowing in his irritation.  “So there’s no way we can make the things you suggested.  I think we should go with a crane, and to avoid making mistakes, you’ll do the carving, while I direct you.”
“Oh hell no.”  Gajeel’s lips twisted into a sneer.  “No way am I doing all the hard work while you just stand there, and no way am I making some prissy-ass bird.  I say we make a guitar, that would be much more cooler, and shows off my musical soul.”
“A guitar?”  Disgust filled Lyon’s face.  “We’ll be judged based on difficulty and artistry, you realize.  What’s artistic about a guitar?”
Gajeel bristled at the heinous insult the ice make mage had just delivered.  “You wanna say that again, pal?”
“I’ll say it as many times as I need to,” Lyon retorted.  “It’s far too simplistic of a design to win us first place, and not really pleasing to the eye.”
“I take it you have zero experience with rock n’ roll fans,” Gajeel stated bluntly.  “You don’t look like you have a musical bone in your body.”
Lyon took deep offense at that.  “I’ll have you know that I-”
“Uh oh.  Look’s like there’s trouble over on Column Four!” Chapati announced.  “Seems like they haven’t even started yet, and are still arguing over what to make!”
So engrossed in their discussion, Lyon and Gajeel both failed to take heed of the the judge’s commentary.
In fact, their argument became so heated that they failed to notice as the timer continued to tick down, down, down...
“Aaaaaand, time’s up!” Mato called out, signalling the end of the challenge with a blow of his whistle.  “Everyone stop carving and step away from your creations.”
Gajeel and Lyon looked towards their untouched pillar of ice, cold dread welling up inside their chests and bullets of sweat running down their faces as they faced their grave error.
“Let’s begin the judging phase,” Mato stated, gesturing towards where Column One had previously stood.
“Mattan Ginger’s fire and ice powers were quite the sight to behold during the carving phase, and very unique in terms of technique,” Arcadios observed.  “Although I must confess that I’m not very artistically inclined myself, so I have... no idea what this sculpture is intended to be.”
“Fool!” declared Roderick, stars shining in his eyes.  “It’s clearly a willow tree!  Such a beautiful one, too.  With the melted and refrozen ice it lends the sculpture the illusion of waving fronds.  I absolutely love it.  If it were marble, I’d have purchased it and had it shipped to my home already.”
“You’ll just have to settle for photographs of it, I’m afraid,” Chapati remarked.  “I definitely see what you’re talking about though, and I must say that I am also suitably impressed.”
Mattan and Nalshe exchanged a high-five, happy with the results thus far and what they had accomplished in such little time.
They wrote down their evaluations, hiding the final score until the reveal at the end, and then turned to judging the second team.
Kagura and Dobengal stood proud of their work, and Arcadios beamed at their creation.  “A sword!” he declared.  “What an excellent inspiration.”
Roderick hummed and frowned.  “I must say that I’m not particularly impressed with this one.  The detail work on the finer points deserves some merit, however, I’m afraid that the subject matter just does not entrance me.”
“I think it looks fantastic.”  Chapati nodded to himself.  “It’s easily recognizable for what it is, and the detail work is stunning.  I say well done.”
Also pleased with how their work had been received, both Kagura and Dobengal bowed to the judges, and then to each other.
Likewise with the second pair, the third seemed immensely pleased with themselves.  And unlike the first two teams, they had somehow procured a cloth to cover up their creation for what would hopefully be a dramatic reveal.
“I’m excited to unveil this sculpture!” remarked Chapati.  “What could lie beneath the cloth?!”
Mato pulled back the covering, the cloth sliding down to pool at the sculpture’s base.
There stood a gargantuan, eerily lifelike and incredibly detailed bust of Ichiya’s face.
Dead silence filled the stadium.
“I call it, A Reflection Of Perfection,” Eve stated, a hand clutched over his heart.  “A tribute to my amazing teacher and guide in life, Sir Ichiya.”
Profuse, incredibly loud sobbing erupted from the Blue Pegasus gallery, as Ichiya broke down with joy over the sculpture, snot and tears dribbling freely down his face.
“I must admit that I’m a fan of the classics,” admitted Mace.  “And Ichiya of Blue Pegasus has to have one of the most classic visages I have ever encountered, so it was a pleasure to pay it homage.”
“...Strikingly detailed,” Roderick stated, though his voice was much more subdued than it had been for the previous sculptures.  “I can see the stubble, even from the judges box.  And the tribute to classicism is much appreciated.”
“It can certainly be said that it rendered us all speechless,” Chapati offered, somewhat weakly.  “
Arcadios appeared to be as frozen as the sculpture was.
“...And finally, Column Four,” Chapati said, drawing the topic away from the bust of Ichiya.  “Unfortunately, it would appear as if this team was too busy arguing to work on the carving at all.  Their ice appears to be completely untouched.”
“A pity,” Arcadios said.  “Teamwork was a key component of this challenge, and in lacking that, they have failed to create anything at all.”
Shame burned through Lyon and Gajeel in equal measure, their faces stained with red.
“Hold on,” commanded Roderick, the art critic holding up a hand to prevent the other two from handing down a judgement of failure.  “I don’t think you two see it.”
“See... what, precisely?” Chapati threw Roderick a questioning look.  “Nothing was done to the ice block.”
The man slammed his fist down on the table.  “Precisely!” he shouted, causing the other two judges to draw back slightly in surprise.  “Don’t you see?  That’s why it is perfection itself!”
“Perhaps you could explain it, then,” suggested Arcadios, sharing a brief, confused glance with Chapati.
“It’s a blank slate,” Roderick told them, his eyes shining with the force of the awe that he felt.  “The block of ice stands there, proud and unyielding, like a monolith.  A monolith of potential, for every possible thing it could become remains inside it still!  Hundreds of sculptures, existing simultaneously!  It bursts with imagination, for anything it could become!”  Tears began to gather in the man’s eyes, and he gave a heavy sniff.  “I have never, in all my career, seen anything quite so beautiful as this.  Day in and day out, I gaze upon gorgeous things.  Perhaps that has made me a little unappreciative of them all.  But now, I see the light.  For the first time in years, my eyes are wide open to the beauty of possibility.  I thank you, good sirs, for showing me something so wonderful on this day.  Thank you, from the bottom of my heart!”
When the final scores were handed down, Gajeel and Lyon were not surprised in the least to find that they had taken last place, with zero points.  After all, despite how much one judge had liked it, the other two still saw the block of ice as a failure to complete the challenge’s objectives.
But it was worth it, afterword, when Roderick approached Gajeel and Lyon behind the scenes to enthusiastically shake their hands and thank them profusely once again.
Gajeel had changed the man’s opinion of him, which was what he had wanted to do in the first place.
And Lyon?  Lyon reflected that this was an opportunity in the making, for self-growth and friendship.
So he invited Gajeel to carve one with him for real, this time.  Or maybe several.  Everything they had wanted to create, they could attempt after all.
Gajeel accepted, wholeheartedly.

Top 5 fights in “My Hero Academia”
Number 5: Deku VS giant robot.
youtube
This is Midoriya's defining moment as a character and a protagonist. Trying to save someone else, not for glory, fame or personal gain, when everybody else had made a run for it, knowing that they would gain nothing by destroying the giant zero-point robot. This moment is what's being a hero is all about.
YES, you could say that him saving Bakugou could be considered his defining moment, but in Midoriya's mind, Bakugou is still, in a twisted way, his friend. Here he does all of that for a stranger. Yes, said stranger happens to be a very cute girl that helped him this morning, but still a stranger. Saving Bakugou proved to All Might Midoriya can be a hero. This moment proved to everybody he's already a hero.
Number 4: Izuku VS Muscular.
Tumblr media
This was Izuku’s first one-on-one fight with a villain. Having to protect a boy named Kota, Izuku did not have any choice but to stand his ground and face off with the insane villain Muscular who simply wanted to kill for the sake of killing. The fight was an explosion of power with out hero fighting a villain with a quirk that seemingly looked like a improved version of the one he has. “One For All” gives Izuku increased strength but he has to be careful not increasing his strength too much or his limbs will break. But Muscular’s quirk “Muscle Augmentation” does the same, only it arguments his muscles so that his body can handle the strength AND he can use this ability as defense by covering himself in mutated muscles. It is a classic David VS Goliath clash.
Number 3: Izuku and Uraraka vs Bakugou and Iida
Tumblr media
It would be a bad list if this one wasn’t included.
This was an interesting fight since it was the moment Izuku confronted Bakugou. We get to see the result of the intense training All Might made Izuku go trough and how he thanks to it actually did rather well against Bakugou, even without the use of his quirk. But I’m glad that he didn’t “win” since that would be unrealistic. After all, Bakugou is experienced with his powerful quirk AND he has trained for years. Sure, Izuku is smart and is great at analyzing his opponents, but so is Bakugou, so much that he has evolved instincts when it comes to combat. He is not just a bully, he is a beast. He is so strong and intelligent that it is scary. So, knowing that he can’t defeat Bakugou, Izuku instead focuses on him and Uraraka winning the exercise. He loses the battle but he wins the war, so to say.
Number 2: Bakugou VS Uraraka
Tumblr media
This fight was brilliant for a ton of reasons.
First of all because of what happens before the actual fight. Izuku who always writes down notes on all heroes he meets and observes offers Uraraka a couple of strategies he made, but she decline the offer of help since she wishes to prove that she can do it by herself. That makes the fight Uraraka’s defining moment as she takes on Bakugou and fight so well that she impresses him enough to make him remember her name, something he rarely does since he can’t be bothered to make the effort. He calls most of his fellow classmate by degrading nicknames.
Bakugou is much more powerful than her and the audience are actually booing on the guy with explosion powers who is “picking on a harmless girl”. But Aizawa who is in the commentary box scolds the audience and points out that by refusing to go easy on her, Bakugou is acknowledging her strength. he’s showing her respect as an opponent. Uraraka is not "a fragile little girl” being beaten up by a bully, she is a combatant. It’s nice that the series pick up this old trope of it being unfair to beat up a girl and point out how sexist it really it.
Number 1: Izuku, Todoroki and Iida VS Stain.
youtube
Iida seeks out Stain, a serial killer who murders whoever he believes to be a “fake” hero. Stain is responsible for Iida’s older brother being paralyzed from the waist and down, so Iida wants to be the one to take down this monster alone. He is no mach to the experienced killer who would have ended Iida’s life if Izuku and Todoroki hadn’t come to his rescue. What makes this fight different from your regular manga/anime brawl is the many dimensions of it where the character’s traits and skills really shines. It is a three on one battle, yet STAIN is the one with the advantage despite being more or less a badass normal. Izuku is slightly stronger and faster than Stain, but Stain is a experienced fighter, meaning that he is better in close combat. Todoroki has his ice powers that are great at deference and his flames are formidable attacks, but he needs distance, something the hero killer won’t let him have, AND he relies on his quirk too much so he is no good in a closeup confrontation that Stain specializes in. And then there is the main factor of this fight that Stain only need cut them once to get blood he can lick in order to paralyze them. Stain is constantly on the clock though, since the boys aren’t trying to beat him but instead aim to stall him so that the pro heroes can arrive and take him down, but being under pressure makes Stain wilder and possibly more dangerous as the fight goes on. Izuku has the small advantage that Stain isn’t trying to kill him since Stain thinks he has what it takes to be a “true” hero, but it matters little since Izuku is trying to save Iida and the pro hero Native from getting killed. This fight is so well written and well thought out that it is almost too good.

Mortal Kombat Review: Video Game Movie Redefines Classic ‘90s Series
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Warner Bros. and director Simon McQuoid pull off a daring, high-wire balancing act (above a pit of spikes, no less) with their big screen take on Mortal Kombat. That is to say, it’s incredibly difficult to make a good, entertaining movie that stands on its own while at the same time remains faithful to source material with a rich, extensive history and passionate fanbase. Plus, it’s a video game movie.
Yet 2021’s Mortal Kombat is both a loving homage to the blood-soaked arcade classics that started it all and a savage, devilishly fun martial arts flick. The film is actually so effective in the latter regard that it transcends the “video game movie” category completely and should in all likelihood attract an audience of people who have never even played the games. McQuoid takes the complex canon and iconic characters from the games and presents them in a way that respects the original designs to the highest degree but makes clear that this is a new take on the story that has its own voice.
This interpretation of Mortal Kombat opens with a fateful encounter between the Chinese Lin Kuei clan’s Bi-Han, aka Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), and the Japanese Shirai Ryu clan’s Hanzo Hasashi, aka Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), whose family is murdered by his cold-blooded arch-nemesis. The battle is gruesome and conveys straight away that the film will indeed depict hard-R violence. Heads are impaled, necks are snapped, guts go flying… yeah, this is Mortal Kombat alright.
But what feels new here is the level of emotionality that’s built into the hyper-violence. The scene is an origin story of sorts for Scorpion, and the rage that he unleashes comes from a visceral place that is easy to understand on a human level. This fixation on the human element permeates the rest of the movie and gives the action dimension without weighing down the proceedings.
The majority of the story revolves around a new character, Cole Young (Lewis Tan), an amateur MMA fighter and family man who gets swept up in a supernatural war of the worlds when he’s informed by special ops badass Jax (Mehcad Brooks) that he’s been chosen as one of Earth’s champions to face the challengers of Outworld in an interdimensional fight for survival and dominance. He’s shocked, hilariously, to learn that the dragon-shaped “birthmark” on his chest is actually a brand given to anointed champions of Earth.
The movie introduces a lot of the classic characters from the games in the context of recruitment for the impending tournament, and it’s impressive that the filmmakers were able to incorporate such a wide variety of characters and still keep the story coherent, especially for a movie that clocks in at just 1 hour 50 minutes.
On the Earth side of the battle, we meet Jax’s partner, the virtuous Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee); her captive, Earth champion-murdering maniac, Kano (Josh Lawson); honorable martial arts masters and cousins Liu Kang (Ludi Lin) and Kung Lao (Max Huang); and stoic thunder god Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano). The outworlders include the soul-devouring Shang Tsung (Chin Han); fanged fatale Mileena (Sisi Stringer); fast-footed psychopath Kabal (Daniel Nelson); winged warrior Nitara (Mel Jarnson); the sledgehammer-swinging General Reiko (Nathan Jones); and the legendary four-armed beast, Goro.
Each character gets at least a few minutes of shine, and some make bigger impressions than others. Kano is the clear standout, with Lawson offering up some genuinely funny banter and one-liners throughout. He truly steals the show. And while he’s essentially only seen in an epic one-on-one with Cole, Goro is absolutely spectacular-looking and is one of the highlights of the movie. Other characters like Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Mileena, feel underserved. One even wonders if the story would’ve worked better as a limited series, giving the minor characters more room to breathe.
While some of the characters are less compelling than others, the good news is that they all look terrific. The designs stay completely faithful to the games while also making the characters look embedded in reality and not at all cartoonish. And in a greater sense, the movie captures the ethereal brutality of the games’ environments (some classic levels make fun cameos) but renders them in a way that looks tactile and believable.
Still, Mortal Kombat’s bread and butter is, of course, the combat, and in this respect the movie over-delivers. The intricately choreographed hand-to-hand fight scenes are at times breathtakingly good (the standoffs between Scorpion and Sub-Zero that bookend the movie are freaking unbelievable). The cast is stacked with experienced martial artists, and all of the physicality looks as legit as it gets. The more supernatural encounters look equally amazing: From Kano’s laser eye to Sonya’s pulse rings, to Sub-Zero’s ice storms, all of the visual effects-based action looks incredibly cool and is integrated perfectly into the martial arts choreography.
As for the level of violence, it’s certainly gory and visceral, and worthy of the Mortal Kombat moniker. Several classic fatalities from the games are rendered in blood-splattered, big budget glory (Kung Lao’s hat gets the spotlight it rightfully deserves), and like the games, the movie’s sense of humor tempers the violence perfectly. Bloodthirsty fans won’t be disappointed.
The most impressive thing about McQuoid’s version of Mortal Kombat though is its tone. The drama and levity balance out nicely, with Cole’s commitment to his family acting as the emotional anchor and Kano’s blather acting as the comic relief. All of the cinematic and narrative elements just gel, which frees the audience up to simply have fun and enjoy the proceedings.
Mortal Kombat stands on its own as an excellent martial arts movie, period. It’s a wildly entertaining ride from beginning to end, and newcomers should have no issue diving into the wicked world Ed Boon and John Tobias created back in 1992. But the movie is also a lovingly crafted homage to the games that’s full of fan service that somehow doesn’t cheapen Cole’s story, which is always the going concern.
The movie is clearly designed to be the launching pad for a larger universe of films, and with several fan-favorite characters missing from the initial lineup (Johnny Cage, Baraka, Shao Kahn, among others), a sequel or two is surely on the horizon.

Noob Saibot debuted as an unplayable hidden character in Mortal Kombat II and became a playable character for the first time in the console versions of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. He is initially established as an undead wraith and member of the Brotherhood of the Shadow cult, which places him in the service of many of the series' villains. His backstory was further expanded in Mortal Kombat: Deception, in which he is revealed as the original Sub-Zero from the original 1992 game, who was killed by Scorpion following the events of the game and then resurrected by the evil sorcerer Quan Chi; Noob Saibot's younger brother took on the mantle of Sub-Zero from Mortal Kombat II onwards. In the reboot continuity started in the 2011 Mortal Kombat game, his birth name is revealed to be Bi-Han.
General and critical reception to the character has been mainly positive, particularly in regard to his Fatality finishing moves. His popularity has led him to be a playable character in most main installments of the franchise following Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.

His role in the series has predominantly been that of a friend and confidant to the younger Sub-Zero; both are part of the Lin Kuei clan of assassins who boldly choose to defect after learning of the clan's plan to convert its members into cyborgs. Smoke was ultimately captured and transformed, and given orders to hunt down Sub-Zero, but unlike his robotic counterparts he had retained his human soul. In the three-dimensional games, he is connected with Noob Saibot, under whose command he serves. Smoke's background is expanded the 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot, it was said that he came from the Czech city of Prague, while his and Sub-Zero's fortunes are reversed in the retelling of their MK3 storyline.
Despite having mostly served in a supporting role in the games, he has noted to be a popular characters in the Mortal Kombat series. Response to his Fatality finishing moves has been mostly mixed. Smoke has also featured in alternate Mortal Kombat media such as the Malibu comic book series, the 1996 cartoon Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm, and the 1997 film Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, in addition to appearing on some official merchandise

The franchise's main Sub-Zero made his debut in 1993's Mortal Kombat II, and has used the mantle since then; he is the younger brother of the Sub-Zero from the original 1992 game, who was killed by Scorpion between the events of the game and Mortal Kombat II; Noob Saibot, an undead wraith first introduced in Mortal Kombat II, was later retconned as the original Sub-Zero, having been resurrected by the evil sorcerer Quan Chi. In the reboot continuity started in the 2011 Mortal Kombat game, the original Sub-Zero's birth name is revealed to be Bi-Han, and his younger brother's to be Kuai Liang.[3]
Both incarnations of Sub-Zero are depicted as warriors from the fictional Lin Kuei clan who possess the innate ability to control ice in many forms. The two also share a bitter rivalry with the undead specter Scorpion due to Bi-Han killing him prior to his resurrection, and Kuai Lang later attempting to avenge Bi-Han's death at Scorpion's hands. In contrast with his older brother's more anti-heroic and later villainous role in the series, the second Sub-Zero typically adapts a heroic persona as one of the fighters helping defend Earthrealm against various threats. In the reboot continuity, he eventually becomes an ally of his lifelong enemy, Scorpion.
One of the Mortal Kombat franchise's signature characters, the Kuai Liang version of Sub-Zero has appeared on a variety of official series merchandise and alternate media, and has received both positive critical and public reception. He is one of the most popular characters in the series, and he has been featured as a playable character in every main Mortal Kombat installment since his introduction.

In Mortal Kombat II (1993), the original Sub-Zero, Bi-Han's, place is taken by his younger brother Kuai Liang, who was originally known by the codename Tundra before assuming that of his elder brother's to honor him. Upon his brother's death in the first tournament and Shang Tsung's survival, Kuai Liang is sent by the Lin Kuei to complete his brother's unfinished task,[4] but is thwarted by Scorpion, who mistakes him for Bi-Han until he witnesses Liang spare an opponent's life; something Bi-Han was not known to do. Scorpion eventually discovers that Liang is not the Sub-Zero he previously held accountable and, in return for taking Bi-Han's life, vows to protect him forever.
In Mortal Kombat 3 (1995), Sub-Zero and his fellow Lin Kuei clansman Smoke attempt to escape from their clan after they start converting their warriors into cyborgs, but the latter ends up captured and turned into one anyway alongside Sektor and Cyrax; the former of whom was known to usurp Sub-Zero for his own benefit.[5] The three Cyber Lin Kuei ninjas are programmed to hunt and exterminate Sub-Zero, who by this time had received a vision from Raiden and agreed to join a rebellion against a new threat.[6] In addition to the current Sub-Zero, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (1995) and Mortal Kombat Trilogy (1996) include a playable character known as "Classic Sub-Zero".[7] His biography states that although he was believed to have died after the first Mortal Kombat, he returned to assassinate Shang Tsung.[8] However, his ending states that he is not Sub-Zero; rather he is an unidentified warrior who was missing from the previous tournament.[9]
In Mortal Kombat 4 (1997), Raiden once again summons Sub-Zero to assist in defending Earthrealm, this time against Shinnok.[10] In the meantime, Sub-Zero fights Scorpion, who Quan Chi has tricked into believing the Lin Kuei killed his family.[11] In Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (2002), Sub-Zero defeats Sektor in a fight for leadership of the Lin Kuei.[12] He also meets his apprentice Frost and takes her to fight alongside Earthrealm's warriors against the titular alliance of Shang Tsung and Quan Chi.[13]
In Mortal Kombat: Deception (2004), Sub-Zero joins the warrior Shujinko's group to defeat a new threat in the dragon king Onaga as well as confront Noob Saibot.[14][15] In both Deadly Alliance and Mortal Kombat: Unchained (2006), Sub-Zero battles Frost for the Lin Kuei's leadership and emerges victorious.[16][17]
In Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks (2005), which takes place during the events of Mortal Kombat II, Sub-Zero first appears as a boss character, but then allies with the protagonists Liu Kang and Kung Lao for a short time during the search for his older brother. He is last seen pursuing Noob Saibot in the Netherrealm.[18]
In Mortal Kombat: Armageddon's Konquest mode (2007), Sub-Zero faces the warrior Taven, though both eventually decide to ally to stop the invading Noob Saibot and Smoke. After defeating them, Sub-Zero stays with the unconscious Noob Saibot to find a way to save him.[19]
Both incarnations of Sub-Zero appear in the 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot game.[3] While Bi-Han is still killed by Scorpion and becomes Noob Saibot,[20] Kuai Liang's fate changes in the second tournament due to Raiden's interference in an attempt to avert Armageddon. After he defeats Scorpion, Sub-Zero is captured and turned into a cyborg instead of Smoke and forced to serve the otherworldly dimension Outworld and its tyrannical ruler, Shao Kahn.[21] However, he is able to regain his mind and joins Raiden's warriors to stop Shao Kahn.[22] His reunion with Bi-Han as Noob Saibot comes much earlier when he attempts to prevent Quan Chi's Soulnado from forming. After defeating his brother, Sub-Zero is relieved by Native American warrior Nightwolf, who tells him to fall back while he disrupts the Soulnado. However, Shao Kahn's wife, Sindel, electrocutes him before Quan Chi "resurrects" and enslaves him in the Netherrealm as an undead revenant.[23] Sub-Zero's background is further clarified during this installment as well, as it is revealed that the two brothers were in fact abducted by the Lin Kuei as infants after the clan murdered their parents.
In Mortal Kombat X, which takes place two years after the previous game, Sub-Zero continues to serve Quan Chi. It is explained in the tie-in comics that Quan Chi used his magic to recreate his original body to free him of his cyborg body. While serving in Quan Chi's attack on Earthrealm, Sub-Zero and Scorpion are resurrected by Raiden. Over the course of the following twenty-five years, Kuai Liang becomes the new grandmaster of the Lin Kuei after defeating Sektor with a computer virus provided by Kung Jin and Bo' Rai Cho; freeing Cyrax and the other cyberized Lin Kuei warriors. He also discovered Quan Chi's role in Bi-Han's downfall and made amends with Scorpion, now Hanzo Hasashi, after revealing Quan Chi and Sektor's involvement in the Shirai Ryu warrior's clan and family's deaths to him. Sub-Zero would later come to the aid of Cassie Cage's team after they were ambushed by Outworld forces while trying to stop Shinnok. While Sub-Zero appears as a playable character in his human form, his cybernetic form is reused as a hidden variation for the DLC character Triborg.
In Mortal Kombat 11, which takes place a further two years after MKX, the keeper of time Kronika brings a past version of Sektor to the present, who kidnaps Sub-Zero's Lin Kuei clansmen to forcibly convert them back into Cyber Lin Kuei and bolster Kronika's forces. In response, Sub-Zero worked with Hasashi to infiltrate Sektor's factory and avenge his fallen clansmen, recruiting a time-displaced Cyrax to help them further. Along the way, they encountered Saibot and Frost, who had abandoned the Lin Kuei over being denied leadership and turned herself into a cyborg after becoming Sektor's second-in-command. Together, Sub-Zero and Hasashi defeated their enemies and forced them to retreat before Cyrax shut down the factory.[24] Due to his Lin Kuei base, among other locations, being compromised by Kronika's allies, Sub-Zero joined his fellow Earthrealm allies at the Shirai Ryu Fire Gardens to assist in formulating a plan to defeat Kronika.[25] At Hasashi's suggestion, he and Sub-Zero head to the Netherrealm to recruit the ferryman Kharon, whom they met while they were revenants.[26] However, Hasashi sends Sub-Zero back to tell Raiden that Kharon will help them while he saves the ferryman from Kronika's minion D'Vorah. When a time-displaced Scorpion arrives bearing news of Hasashi's death by D'Vorah's hand, Sub-Zero initially assumes he is lying and gets into a brief fight with him before realizing the truth with help from Liu Kang.[27][28] Sub-Zero later takes part in the final battle at Kronika's keep alongside the combined Earthrealm/Outworld armies.[29] In Sub-Zero’s non-canonical ending, after defeating Kronika, he considers Bi-Han and his time as Noob Saibot, and forges a new timeline where he is able to fight alongside his brother again.
Kuai Liang is a playable character in the non-canonical crossover title Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (2009), which concerns a war between the eponymous fictional universes. In Sub-Zero's ending, he realizes he is no longer the assassin he once was and leaves the Lin Kuei. Inspired by Batman, he becomes a superhero. Unbeknownst to him, the Lin Kuei are hunting him for deserting them.[30] Sub-Zero makes a cameo appearance in Injustice: Gods Among Us (2013) during Scorpion's intro, in which the latter is about to perform a fatality on the former before being mysteriously pulled into the Injustice universe. Sub-Zero appears as a playable character alongside Raiden via downloadable content in the game's sequel, Injustice 2 (2017). Despite making references to MK vs. DCU, Sub-Zero's ending suggests he was also mysteriously pulled to the Injustice universe during the events of MKX. In his arcade ending, following his victory over the alien Brainiac, Sub-Zero worked with Batman to find a way back to his universe. In the meantime, the former became a teacher to the latter's younger allies. After the tyrannical Superman is accidentally freed from the Phantom Zone however, a duty-bound Sub-Zero chooses to stay for as long as he needs to so he can assist the Justice League in re-imprisoning him.[31]
Sub-Zero is also a guest character in The Grid.[32] In the indie-game Punch Club, a ninja named Sub-273 serves as the game's final boss, with his character design based on the first Mortal Kombat film;[33] the "-273" being a reference to the Celsius representation of 0 kelvin, which is considered absolute zero. Mortal Kombat: Fire & Ice, which would have starred Scorpion and Sub-Zero in co-operative gameplay, was cancelled when Paradox Development, creators of Shaolin Monks, "couldn’t do it in time and under budget."[34]

Cyrax has also been featured in other Mortal Kombat alternate media such as the 1996 animated series Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm and the 2011 web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy. The character has received mostly positive reception, particularly for his Fatality finishing moves and gameplay.

In video gamesEdit
In Mortal Kombat 3, Cyrax is a member of the Lin Kuei clan of assassins along with Sub-Zero, Sektor, and Smoke. When the clan decide to utilize modern technology by converting its members into soulless cyborgs, Sub-Zero refuses and defects from the clan; which lead to the clan's grandmasters marking him for death. As a result, Cyrax, Sektor, and Smoke were all assigned to hunt down and kill him. During Outworld emperor Shao Kahn's invasion of Earthrealm, Sub-Zero captured Cyrax and reprogrammed him with orders to destroy the emperor, but Shao Kahn was defeated beforehand by the other Earthrealm warriors. As a result of his reprogramming, Cyrax awaited the orders of a new objective. When these never came, he consequently malfunctioned and wandered until becoming mired in the middle of a vast desert. This storyline was continued in Mortal Kombat Gold, when he was recovered and repaired by the Lin Kuei. The short-handed clan sent Cyrax back into battle, with Sektor assigned to monitor him.[3] However, his MK Gold plotline was ignored by Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance's (2002) Konquest Mode, in which Cyrax was "recovered by Special Forces agents Sonya Blade and Jackson Briggs," a reference to the character's unused biography in Prima's official strategy guide for MK Gold; according to which Cyrax was recovered by the Special Forces in the Gobi Desert and reprogrammed to fight on the side of good against the fallen Elder God Shinnok.[4] After Shinnok's defeat, Cyrax began to experience flashbacks of his former life, so Sonya and Jax brought him to the Outer World Investigation Agency (OIA) headquarters, where they restored his humanity. As a token of gratitude, Cyrax joined the agency as a scout in Earthrealm.
During the events of Deadly Alliance, Cyrax was ambushed by the Oni Moloch and Drahmin. After driving the two demons off, he became stranded in Outworld. His arm console, which allowed him to return to Earthrealm, was damaged in a surprise attack by Outworld native Reptile that was orchestrated by the vampire Nitara. When Cyrax encounters her, she offers to help him return home in exchange for his aid in recovering a lost artifact. They traveled to the underground chamber that housed the egg of the Dragon King. There, Cyrax submerged himself in a lake of molten lava and discovered the orb that would separate her home realm of Vaeternus from Outworld. With the egg in her possession, she honored her promise to Cyrax and used her mystical necklace to open a portal to send him back to Earthrealm.[5]
For the rebooted Mortal Kombat (2011), Cyrax is first depicted as a human, Tswana member of the Lin Kuei who relies on his chi to carry out clan missions. He and Sektor, both introduced during the first tournament, have conflicting views over the Lin Kuei's impending "Cyber Initiative", which calls for all of its members to be transformed into cyborgs. While Sektor wholly supports the proposition, Cyrax is reluctant to surrender his humanity, as he believes his instincts and judgement are far more effective than any mechanical augmentation. He naively believed that Shang Tsung had invited him and Sektor to the tournament until Raiden informs him that he had been paid handsomely to kill the Earthrealm fighters and that if Earthrealm loses, so will the Lin Kuei. As a result of this, Shang Tsung unsuccessfully attempts to have Cyrax killed by Sheeva and Baraka. Cyrax later confronts Sektor after refusing to kill Johnny Cage during their match and knocks out his fellow clansman following an argument; severing his ties to the Lin Kuei. However, in events that occurred off-screen, Cyrax was getting caught, cyberized, and reprogrammed to be loyal to the Lin Kuei before assisting Sektor in pursuing Smoke and the younger Sub-Zero, Tundra, into Outworld.[6] After capturing Sub-Zero in Shao Kahn's arena during the second tournament and taking him away to be cyberized, Cyrax and Sektor pledging their services to the Kahn in exchange. When the Outworld emperor launched an invasion of Earthrealm, the cyborgs launched their own attack on the Earthrealm defenders to stop them from interfering, only to be thwarted by warrior Nightwolf. Despite this, Shao Kahn's wife Queen Sindel, arrived moments later and completed the cyborgs' mission.
Cyrax's fate is expanded on in the Mortal Kombat X prequel comics. After Sektor became grandmaster, he intended to fully cyberize the Lin Kuei in his image while Cyrax remained his servant. When Sub-Zero infected the Lin Kuei with a computer virus, Cyrax was freed from the slaving protocols that dictated his programming, allowing him to turn on Sektor. After Cyrax reveals the Cyber Lin Kuei need a central master to function, Sub-Zero decapitates Sektor, and Cyrax becomes the remaining cyborgs' new master. Unable to live as a cyborg, Cyrax chose to self-destruct, taking the Cyber Lin Kuei with him. In the MKX game, Cyrax was added as one of three variations for the shapeshifting cyborg DLC character, "Triborg".
A time-displaced Cyrax appears in Mortal Kombat 11 as an NPC character who was brought to the present timeline by the keeper of time Kronika as part of her plan to restart time; taking part in Sektor's plot to capture Sub-Zero's Lin Kuei warriors and convert them into cyborgs to bolster her ranks. After Sub-Zero and Hanzo Hasashi infiltrated the Cyber Lin Kuei factory to shut them down, Cyrax attempted to stop them, only to be defeated and have his slave protocol disabled. Upon regaining his humanity, he was horrified to discover what Sektor had done to him and chose to sacrifice himself to shut down the factory, though Sub-Zero pledged to restore him.[7]
DesignEdit
Cyrax, played by Sal Divita, was the second of the three cybernetic ninja characters to be conceived, and he and Sektor were unofficially named "Mustard" and "Ketchup" while Mortal Kombat 3 was in production. He was a yellow palette swap of Sektor, as the original costume used for game filming was red. Divita explained that the outfit, which consisted of a large amount of plastic armor plating and a custom-made helmet, was "really heavy," while the helmet itself was "hot and uncomfortable" and he "couldn't breathe" or "hear anything" while wearing it.[8] John Tobias said that Cyrax and Sektor's design was in part inspired by Boba Fett and the Predator.[9]
With the series' transition into three-dimensional games, each of the cybernetics' visual appearances has evolved independently; Cyrax in particular had several enhancements to his costume that included a utility belt and LED lighting placed throughout his mechanism. His human face was officially seen for the first time in his MK Gold ending, which showed him in full armor minus his faceplate.[10] His alternate costume for Deadly Alliance showed him in a more revealing costume with fewer openly visible cybernetic enhancements while more of his actual body was displayed, as he wore a type of open-faced, helmet-like apparatus.[11]
Since appearing in MK3 and its updates (Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and the 1996 compilation title Mortal Kombat Trilogy), Cyrax, Sektor and Smoke would not feature in the same titles as playables again until Mortal Kombat: Armageddon in 2006: Cyrax and Sektor were selectable in MK Gold but Smoke was omitted, while only Cyrax was initially playable in Deadly Alliance until Sektor was added to the roster in the "Tournament Edition" update of Deadly Alliance for the Game Boy Advance. Meanwhile, Smoke was included in Mortal Kombat: Deception (as part of a unit with Noob Saibot), in which neither Cyrax nor Sektor appeared. All three would reunite once again as playable characters in MK2011, while Cyrax and Sektor's MK3 costumes were released together in June 2011 as downloadable content for the reboot game.[12] Cyrax's code unit of his cyborg form, LK-4D4

When the Lin Kuei decide to automate their ninja in the events leading up to Mortal Kombat 3, Sektor was the first volunteer to undergo the process, which he did out of loyalty to the clan. Designated as unit LK-9T9, he was sent to find and kill the rogue defector Sub-Zero, who had quit the clan after refusing to be mechanized. Future events would leave Sektor as the only active cyborg remaining out of the original three created, with Smoke having been captured and shut down in an Outworld prison before he was subsequently enslaved by Noob Saibot while Cyrax joined Sonya Blade and Jax Briggs as a member of the Outer World Investigation Agency after his human soul was restored. During his many violent battles against Outworld forces, Sektor's programming became corrupted to the point that he believed the Lin Kuei Grandmaster to be inferior and killed him, but he was stopped from claiming the Dragon Medallion, the proof of the clan's leadership, by a returning Sub-Zero, who defeated Sektor in battle and claimed the title of Grandmaster for himself. Sektor fled to Japan thereafter and formed the Tekunin, his own clan of cyborg ninja warriors.[4]
Sektor returned in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon (2006), but he plays a minor role in the game's Konquest mode when he captured the Edenian demigod Taven while he was searching his father, Argus', temple for a weapon he left behind and imprisoned him in a Tekunin warship. Sektor tried to interrogate Taven about a message he had received from Argus, but failed to glean anything from him. Before he could try further, the warship was attacked by Sonya Blade and the Special Forces, Taven escaped in the ensuing chaos, and while Sektor confronted him before he could leave, the Edenian defeated him in battle. Following this, Sektor escaped from the warship before it self-destructed.
In Mortal Kombat (2011), an alternative-timeline retelling of the first three games, Sektor is depicted as the son of the Lin Kuei Grandmaster, a position the former hoped to usurp from him.[5] He is introduced during the Shaolin Tournament as a human Chinese member of the clan who, along with Cyrax, was paid handsomely by tournament organizer Shang Tsung to compete and kill Earthrealm's fighters. Sektor and Cyrax had conflicting views over the Lin Kuei's impending "Cyber Initiative", which called for all of its members to be transformed into cyborgs. Sektor wholly supported the proposition while Cyrax was reluctant to surrender his humanity. Sektor later came to blows with Cyrax when the latter refused to kill Johnny Cage in battle, but was defeated by his comrade, who quit the clan soon after. During the second Mortal Kombat tournament, a cyberized Sektor attacked Smoke and attempted to kidnap him so he could be cyberized as well, only to be prevented by the thunder god Raiden. However, in a reversal of Smoke and Sub-Zero's storylines from MK3, the Lin Kuei captured Sub-Zero inside Outworld emperor Shao Kahn's arena and eventually cyberized him, with Sektor pledging his services to the Kahn in exchange. When Shao Kahn launched an invasion of Earthrealm, Sektor and the rest of the cyberized Lin Kuei launched their own attack on the Earthrealm defenders to stop them from interfering with the Kahn's plans, only to be thwarted by defeated by the warrior Nightwolf. Despite this, Shao Kahn's wife Sindel completed the clan's objective of slaughtering the Earthrealm warriors.
Sektor makes a cameo in Mortal Kombat X. After the previous game, as shown in the comic book prequel, Sektor completely cyberized the Lin Kuei and made clone robots in his image to bolster the ranks. After the revenant Sub-Zero was revived and returned to human form, Sektor sent his robots to capture the wayward warrior again. Apparently, it failed due to Sub-Zero's being turned into Chaosrealm cleric Havik's slave by a dagger he tried to retrieve for Raiden. After Sub-Zero recovered from both the curse and his injuries, he infiltrated the Lin Kuei to stop Sektor for good. During the ensuing fight, Sektor captured Sub-Zero, but the latter outwitted him by uploading a virus into the cyber Lin Kuei's systems, restoring Cyrax's humanity and causing him to turn on Sektor. With Cyrax's help, Sub-Zero killed Sektor by decapitating him, though he kept his parts to access his memory files. In doing so, he discovered that the Lin Kuei had aided the sorcerer Quan Chi in the slaughter of the Shirai Ryu clan and Hanzo Hasashi's murder. The Lin Kuei were to pledge loyalty to fallen Elder God Shinnok as part of the agreement, but when the time came, Sektor and the Lin Kuei refused due to Quan Chi resurrecting Hanzo as the undead revenant Scorpion; an act that Sektor felt violated the terms as Hanzo was still "alive". Sektor also appeared as a variation for the downloadable character Triborg.
A time-displaced Sektor appears in Mortal Kombat 11 as an NPC. Sektor and his Cyber Lin Kuei army are revived by the keeper of time Kronika and brought into her ranks. They are joined by Sub-Zero’s former apprentice, Frost, who became Sektor’s trusted second-in-command and later successor after undergoing the cyberization process. He, Cyrax, and Frost, backed by Noob Saibot, kidnapped all of Sub-Zero’s Lin Kuei warriors and forcibly converted them into cyborgs. After learning of what they had done, Sub-Zero and Hanzo arrived at the Cyber Lin Kuei's factory to shut it down. Sektor confronted them after Cyrax is freed from his control, revealing he contributed to Hanzo becoming Scorpion, but is defeated and later deactivated when Cyrax shuts down the factory. Noob and Frost escape with Sektor's body, which Kronika's allies use to revive him and the Cyber Lin Kuei.[6] Once they were ready, the cyborgs joined the Black Dragon crime cartel in storming the Special Forces base, where Kano used a kill-switch installed in Sektor's systems to destroy it.[7] When the joint Earthrealm/Outworld armies launched an attack on Kronika's keep, the Cyber Lin Kuei attempted to stop them under Frost's leadership, but Raiden destroyed them.[8] In Sub-Zero’s arcade ending, he discovers Sektor was responsible for corrupting Bi-Han before he eventually became Noob Saibot.
Design and gameplayEdit
Sektor (voiced by Andrew Kishino) during the first tournament in MK2011's story mode, which marked his first official human appearance in the MK series
As a byproduct of all the costumes worn for the filming of Mortal Kombat 3 being red, Sektor, played by Sal Divita, was the first of the three cybernetic ninjas to be conceived, during which he was simply called "Cyber-Ninja."[9] When Cyrax was later added to the roster, he and Sektor were nicknamed "Mustard" and "Ketchup," respectively, before their final names were determined.[10] John Tobias said that Cyrax and Sektor's design was in part inspired by Boba Fett and the Predator.[11] According to Ed Boon, he proved the most difficult of the new MK3 characters to name, a decision that extended late into the development process until "Sektor" was finally chosen because it was the name that the team "didn't hate the most."[12] In an April 1995 feature about the game by VideoGames magazine while it was still in production, Boon gushed about Sektor's "great" then-unnamed "Compactor" Fatality: "He stands in front of you and all this machinery comes out of his chest and just crushes you."[9] In the 1995 television special about the making of MK3 that was shot while the game was in production, a brainstorming session among the development team was filmed in which they were discussing the cyber-ninja characters; rejected names included "Saibot X-11" and "Defcon," while special effects designer John Vogel joked that the game would have a secret character named "Mayo," in reference to Cyrax and Sektor's development names. Divita was also shown in one segment putting on Sektor's helmet before engaging series graphic artist Carlos Pesina (Raiden) in a mock fight.[13]
Sektor's development name is referenced in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance as the name of one of Sektor's combos in his Sambo fighting style, and he also has a special in Armageddon called "Ketchup's Revenge." Like Scorpion's sprite being multiplied for the series' human ninjas, palette swaps of Sektor were used to create Cyrax and the robotic Smoke. Being a cyborg, Sektor has the abilities to shoot out missiles from his chest and project fire from implements attached to his wrists, which he uses for certain special moves and Fatalities. He also utilizes a teleport uppercut for one of his special moves. When Fatalities are performed on him, his corpse and contents are human, although he bleeds oil when hit.
From MK3 and its updates to Mortal Kombat Gold (1999), Sektor's appearance originally resembled an armored ninja, but the series' transition into full 3D allowed for more mechanical design possibilities, the cyber-ninja template having first changed with Cyrax in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. Sektor received an exact replica of Cyrax's design change with a red recolor; the lower body appears more mechanical, yet the head remains the same. Sektor retained this appearance in Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition. He finally received his own original design in Armageddon, leaving his helmet design as the only visual link to Cyrax. The Krypt in Armageddon has concept art of Sektor holding a weapon similar to a polearm (it is referred to as a "2-hand pulse blade"); the concept was dropped in favor of giving him two lightsaber-like swords in the game.

Sektor's Fatalities in MK2011 involve the dismemberment of his opponents, whether through an implement fired from his chest ("Scarecrow"), or cutting of them into several pieces before blowing the segments up with missiles ("Robo-Sek"). His and Cyrax's MK3 costumes were released together in June 2011 as downloadable content for the reboot game.[14]

Triborg is a character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. A member of the cyberized version of the Lin Kuei, he is the last remaining cyborg of the Cyber Initiative. Triborg seeks to exterminate all life in the realms.
Triborg made his debut as a playable character in Mortal Kombat X as DLC as part of the Kombat Pack 2.

About Triborg
Before the Lin Kuei Grandmaster's death, he had all members of the clan participate in tests, and unbeknownst to them, they were all secretly recorded and had their data stored in an undisclosed location. After Sub-Zero had killed Sektor and single-handedly defeated the Lin Kuei, the Special Forces located the secret data storage and attempted to process it into a test body at an SF lab. During this process, the consciousnesses of Sektor, Cyrax, Smoke and even Cyber Sub-Zero merged together. This consciousness, giving itself the title of Triborg, killed every Special Forces member at the lab and escaped. "He" has made it his ultimate mission to seek and destroy all organic life, as well as re-establish the Cyber Lin Kuei under his rule.
Furthermore, Triborg is a very advanced model of the Lin Kuei's Cyber Initiative, being far more successful than Sektor due to him having the data of many Lin Kuei assassins in his databanks, thus making him a very dangerous opponent. His signature trait is that he is capable of perfectly replicating the fighting styles, arsenal and abilities of four previous members of the Lin Kuei: Sektor, Cyrax, Smoke, and Sub-Zero.
Triborg was the last of the original Cyber Lin Kuei after its destruction by Sub-Zero. The Cyber Lin Kuei would be restored in Mortal Kombat 11 by the Keeper of Time Kronika, however Triborg is never seen.
Appearance
Triborg's cyborg body is much smoother and streamlined when compared to the bulkier designs of the original Cyber Lin Kuei; though he retains the wire "hair" extensions emerging from the back of his skull like all previous models. Several sections of his armor contain small rockets for jet propulsion and a central power node is visible on his chest that glows the same color as his eyes no matter what variation he is in. Due to his ability to replicate the powers of previous Cyber Lin Kuei, his armor changes color and helmet design depending on which variation he is using.
With his advanced shapeshifting abilities, Triborg is a far more advanced Cyber Lin Kuei. With each cyborg ninja he replicates, his armor and faceplate morph into that respective ninja;
Triborg's primary, unaltered appearance is that of a grey cyborg. This appearance is present when inspecting the character before a match, however it is never shown in any other way except when previewing the character's picture in the Kollection.
As Sektor, Triborg's entire body becomes red and his faceplate morphs into one similar to Sektor. Additionally, his abilities are now that of Sektor, gaining the use of Sektor's rockets, teleportation and flamethrower.
As Cyrax, Triborg's entire body becomes yellow and his faceplate morphs into one similar to Cyrax. Additionally, his abilities are now that of Cyrax, gaining the use of Cyrax's bombs, net abilities, teleportation and power grab.
As Smoke, Triborg's entire body becomes a blackish-grey but his faceplate remains unchanged. Alternatively, selecting his alternate colors while morphed as Smoke will change his entire body purple, similar to Smoke's cyborg appearance in MK3. While in this form, smoke clouds surround his body, similar to Smoke. Additionally, his abilities are now that of Smoke, gaining the use of Smoke's spear, teleportation and disappearing abilities.
As Sub-Zero, Triborg's entire body becomes blue and just like when he morphs into Smoke, his faceplate remains unchanged from his original form. Alternatively, selecting his alternate colors while morphed as Sub-Zero turns his entire body grey, completely resembling his default form, however the wires in his arms and body become light blue. Also while in this form, frost comes from his entire body, similar to how the frost comes from Sub-Zero's arms due to his Cryomancy. Additionally, his abilities are now that of Sub-Zero and his cyborg form, gaining ice based weapons, frost bombs, jet attacks and Sub-Zero's Slide and freezing abilities.

All fighters ranked plus the best melee, sword and ranged fighters explained • Eurogamer.net
Fighting your friends in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has become more heated than ever, but with over 70 playable characters, it can be tough to choose which is the best Smash Bros Ultimate character to try.
We’ve done the hard work and worked out a Super Smash Bros Ultimate Tier List in order to help you get to grips with competitive play, updated to include all the latest Smash Bros DLC characters, up to the newly available Min Min, released July 2020.
On this page:
One of the first things that you should look out for is the general play style of the character. We’ve segmented these into three categories, Melee, Sword and Ranged. Be aware however, that some characters (such as Link and all of his variants) do not generally fit into this mould.
When you have settled on which character to play as, you need to get them first – which is where our Super Smash Bros Ultimate character unlock page comes in handy. We also have some Super Smash Bros Ultimate tips if you want to brush up on the essentials, plus everything we know about Super Smash Bros Ultimate DLC.
Super Smash Bros Ultimate Tier List
We’ve attempted to rank every current fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate into a single list, based on their strengths, weaknesses, options for attack, recovery and general attack power.
Patch 8.0 has finally arrived after six long months of no updates, and with it comes our first fighter from the second season of fighters in Super Smash Bros Ultimate – Min Min.
Alongside Min Min, 8.0 comes with a slew of buffs and updates to existing characters. So, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to take a look at these brand-new balance changes, and review every single character in the current roster to find out who you should definitely pick, and which characters you don’t want to invest your time into.

How we settled on our Super Smash Bros Ultimate Tier List – and how it’s changed in the latest update
Patch 8.0 has finally arrived, and with it the first significant balance changes for almost half a year, so we’ve done the work and revisited every character on the balance changes sheet to see just what the real shakers and movers really are.
What we’ve seen in general in 8.0 is a general buff to many characters who are on our list in the lower to mid-tiers. These changes are mostly focused upon the characters who aren’t quite as strong, and who have now been brought in line.
Since this balance change is pretty significant, we’ve found that with a lot of these changes, it’s only really brought most of the affected characters in line with the rest of the tier list, and their changes are not really significant enough to warrant a bump up in the tier list.
However, this doesn’t go for everyone. The common theme, as seen in the patch notes is that a lot of smash damage, and vulnerabilities have been reduced.
This affects some characters more so than others, so we’ve picked out the fighters who seem to have benefited the most here, and bumped them up in the tier list.
Let’s kick off with an old fan favourite, Falco. A great in almost every game that he’s appeared in, Falco is a top choice for many pro players, even in Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
However, so far during the game’s lifecycle, we’ve not been too impressed with his current incarnation. That all changes in patch 8.0, where he’s received some significant buffs that extend Falco’s options quite a bit, where he ends up inching ever closer towards how he played in Melee.
His up smash is significantly easier to combo, and now launches enemies further, as well as his down tilt being buffed, and now, his iconic side special lasts a little bit longer, as well as being faster.
This all makes for Falco not only becoming a little bit better, but significantly so, especially when it comes to combos, this makes Falco feel a bit more like his old self, and that can only be a good thing. We think that this makes Falco not only a Strong character, but potentially one of the best to play as, as of patch 8.0.
It’s a similar story when it comes to Wii Fit Trainer. They have always been a good contender on our tier list, but these recent changes have only done more to push them up and into a higher tier.
Their Up Smash comes out quicker, and their vulnerability has been reduced on a number of attacks. However, one of the most notable changes is their neutral special getting an extended launch distance, compounded with the reduced vulnerability specifically on the forward air makes for a potent combination.
We already knew that Wii Fit Trainer was a great character to play as, and these changes just eke them into the ‘Best’ tier.
It’s a slightly different story for our lad Ike, who has been shuffled across the list multiple times already, and this is because while Ike is a strong character, we’ve found that his speed can be a bit of an issue for many.
Ike is one character who has actually gotten a slight debuff, in a sea of buffed characters, but this is just limited to his neutral air attack, but when you look at the rest of the changes, Ike has actually been significantly buffed.
Again, with a number of reduced vulnerabilities, and the up special now not being able to be neutralised,it’s made for a more deadly combination, as his dash attack and extended launches make for easier combos.
When you compound this with the fact that Ike hits like a truck, we think he’s not only a dead ringer for one of the higher tiers, but he now sits comfortably in the “Strong” tier.
Last but certainly not least is King Dedede, who has also enjoyed a range of buffs that we think slots him into a higher tier, and right into the ‘Good’ tier, instead of previously languishing in ‘Average’.
While King Dedede might not be our top choice when it comes to some of the slower characters, he’s certainly seen a significant boost in power. Some of his hard-hitting attacks like forward air, up air and up tilt have all had extended launch distance, with up tilt also enjoying some increased power.
The range on his neutral special; Inhale has also had a slight extension of range, and also has its speed increased. While this makes it King Dedede slightly better, the limitations in speed make him settle in at a single jump in tiers from ‘Average’ to ‘Good’.
How good are Joker, Piranha Plant, Hero, Banjo and Kazooie, Terry Bogard, Byleth and Min Min in our Super Smash Bros Ultimate Tier List?
The addition of new characters always add new dimensions to the tier list ranking. Kicking off with Piranha Plant, its range of moves and attacks make it a slightly weaker ranged character, but it doesn’t quite give you the same sort of options as the most recent addition, Joker adds.
Joker is incredibly versatile, with fantastic close range and melee attacks, in addition to a dynamic recovery. In addition to this, when you fill his gauge up and unleash his persona, Joker becomes a master of zone control, if you want to keep your enemies at bay, you can – but you can also stand toe-to-toe with some of the better melee fighters, but a change to the way that Arsene reacts to projectiles in 4.0 means that we’ve given him a slightly lower ranking.
That said, a Joker player just won Evo 2019. Sometimes, raw tiers don’t always count towards player skill!
In update 4.0, we saw the addition of Dragon Quest’s Hero and his many cosmetic incarnations. And phwoar, he’s very strong. Being a swordfighter, Hero has an MP Bar, with a menu ability that allows you to use special attacks, that often do some incredible damage, including a movement and speed buff.
Additionally, you’re able to block projectiles with a forward tilt, and his special attacks consume a slight bit of MP. If you fully charge your side special, Zapple, you’re able to almost certainly thwack an enemy right off stage. With really strong normals, tilts and smashes, and to top it all off, a skill named Thwack, that has the potential to instantly KO enemies.
It’s likely that Hero may be banned in future tournaments, just because he’s that good.
The fourth character, Banjo and Kazooie, is worth considering thanks to a decent range of attacks.
Banjo and Kazooie’s normal attacks and tilts can come across as slightly stubby, and as such they aren’t a great fighter when playing up close, with Banjo and Kazooie you’ll want to use their excellent throw and side special to do a big hunk of damage and close the gap.
If your opponent is at range, you’re also able to use their side special, which spouts eggs at the enemy. The trick with Banjo and Kazooie is that because their side special is so strong, they give you limited uses by the way of feathers, so use them wisely.
Banjo and Kazooie is an incredibly situational character, and not really the best all rounder, even with their range of attacks, which is why we have placed them in the average section of our tier list.
Patch 6.0 introduced Fatal Fury and Garou: Mark of the Wolves legend, Terry Bogard.
This technical fighter is not for players who cannot quickly perform fighting game inputs, but if you handily know how to do Supers and special moves in Street Fighter, you’ll be fine.
Either way, you can practice in the training room until you’ve nailed it.
Terry has a lot of special moves, and with the right inputs you’ll be able to master them all. Tapping B does Power Wave, a short-ranged projectile that tracks across the floor, a quarter circle forward and B or A will do Burn Knuckle, a horizontal punch that covers a decent amount of ground.
Back, down back and down will perform Crack Shoot, an overhead kick that is a really good situational gap closer, which will help out with your zoning and distances.
Power Dunk is forward, down and down forward which will launch your enemies into the air and smash them back down again, which is great for getting those high percentage spikes.
Terry’s final special Rising Tackle isn’t too useful we’ve found, and is an attack that launches you upwards, dealing a minimal amount of damage.
Just from these moves alone, Terry isn’t too powerful, and can be hard to close the gap with ranged fighters, but due to the amount of air attacks that Terry has, he can do excellently when fighting offstage.
The real interesting meat, and what tipped Terry from Good to Strong in our Tier list are the special moves that he gets when he hits 100% damage, where a ‘Go’ will appear near his character portrait.
Power Geyser requires you to input down, down back, back, down back, forward and A or B, this will make Terry perform a quick smash to the ground, which can kill at relatively low percentages, and launch your opponents into the air.

The other notable move is Buster Wolf, which can be performed with two quarter circles forward on the stick and B or A. This will launch Terry forward, and connect with one attack, before “shooting” them.
This does some great damage and can also kill at lower percentages, especially if you’re close to the edge of the stage.
The only thing holding Terry back from the “Best” Tier are his options for closing distance with other characters, and average movement speed. This makes Terry a more difficult character to use, but one that we’ll be keeping an eye on in the competitive scene.
Finally, Fire Emblem: Three Houses star Byleth gets a well-earned cameo in Super Smash Bros Ultimate as the final character in the first Fighter’s Pass.
Byleth appears in both masculine and feminine forms, and also has a few other tricks up their sleeve. Byleth’s gimmick is that they’re often a slower, hard-hitting character that has pretty variable (inconsistent) range, but can very easily kill at lower percentages.
Doing an upward direction attack will see Byleth use a fast whip, which causes multiple hits, a side attack using the lance has long range, and usually comes out slower.
A down attack uses Byleth’s Axe, which comes out incredibly slowly, but with some pretty incredible damage. Byleth’s most useful attack is their Bow, which can be used just by using neutral special.
This can be charged, and do an obscene amount of damage, flinging your enemies far across the screen. The key to using Byleth is to not only know how fast your attacks come out, but also how to wrap your enemies around your finger using zone-control using the bow.
Since the bow is pretty powerful and also has a longer range, you need to carefully think about what attacks to use and when.

Like Terry, you don’t want to be mashing out on Byleth willy-nilly, as it probably won’t end well when the slow movement speed is compounded with the slower side and down attacks that use the lance and axe.
One thing redeeming this is that Byleth has a great recovery, which can also allow you to bounce straight off walls and into another attack. However, this is a really finicky character.
Since you’re able to deal a bit more damage than a lot of other characters, we’ve popped Byleth in the ‘Average’ tier. We can only hope to see that Byleth gets buffed in the future, as the slow movement speed and slow attacks do not make up for the damage output we managed.
With Arms finally getting some representation in the form of Min Min in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, we’ve found that she’s not quite all that when it comes to raw power and versatility, in comparison to some of the other characters that we have seen being introduced to the game.
Min Min has a pretty average movement speed, with some impressive range on some attacks, this doesn’t necessarily mean she’s a ranged fighter, however.
We’ve found that she can hold her own up close or at a medium distance, thanks to her spring-loaded arms. Side specials and smashes perform relatively well, if not a little bit underpowered for how slow they come out.
You can charge the cannonball using down special, and release the energy with a side special. but we’ve found that it’s a bit too much investment to prove useful when it comes to being in a high-octane brawl.

However, she does have an impressive fast recovery time, using her arms to zip up to the edge, this may be useful for edge guarding in a pinch.
Her air attacks are where those spring-loaded arms come in really handy, you can keep enemies at a pretty safe distance, but all of your attacks dish out fairly mediocre damage, and don’t necessarily always have the launch power to fully take your enemies out.
Unfortunately, this means that we didn’t exactly have a great time online with Min Min, as she just didn’t have all the tools we needed to hold our own.
The saving grace for Min Min are her defensive options, which are thanks to her impressive melee range. For this reason, we’ve placed Min Min onto the ‘Average’ tier.
With the above changes and explanations out the way, it’s time to choose a fighter. One of the first things that you should look out for is the general play style of the character. We’ve segmented these into three categories, Melee, Sword and Ranged. Be aware however, that some characters (Such as Link and all of his variants) do not generally fit into this mould.
If you’re looking for a specific playstyle, then may the following sections help…
Best Melee Fighters in Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Melee fighters are the best at getting up close and personal with your enemies. Their normal attacks should be quick, their tilts exceptional, and smashes hit hard. A great example of a good melee fighter would be Bowser, who might have some ranged options with his firebreath, but excels at getting up close and personal to dish out some pain.
You should also consider a move often forgotten by a lot of casual Smash Players, the throw is an excellent way to chuck your enemies offstage, a great example of a character with a great throw is Ken’s Roll-Back throw, as you’re able to take an enemy from the last quarter of the stage, grab and roll them straight off the edge, leaving them vulnerable to your spiking smash attacks to finish them off.
While Terry is a great character, we wouldn’t recommend him for those who might not be used to fighting game inputs. Practice with Ryu or Ken, then move onto Terry.
Peach / Daisy
Peach/Daisy are arguable the best melee fighters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with some devastating attacks with her side special, and quick tilts, you can often find yourself juggling characters in the air, or driving enough pressure on them to the side of the stage that they cannot escape.
A great bonus to any Peach/Daisy players out there is the fact that their recovery is also brilliant, with the iconic parasol dishing out damage where it causes the most pain.
Finally, While Terry is a great character, we wouldn’t recommend him for those who might not be used to fighting game inputs. Practice with Ryu or Ken, then move onto Terry when you’re ready.
Ryu / Ken
While our iconic street fighters are not in our top ‘strongest’ tier, that doesn’t make them any less deadly up close. With their focus attack, Ryu and Ken gain armour on a single attack, and are able to crumple your opponents to the ground, meaning that this is a great counter to hard hitting single attacks or smashes.
Additionally, with their repertoire of traditional Street Fighter moves, Ryu and Ken might be a little bit stubby when it comes to their normal attacks, but it is a great starting point for someone wanting to play a melee character.
Ridley
This fan-favourite character has shown their true colours as the patches have gone by, highlighting how good Ridley really is. Focusing on a big close-range game, and with some devastating attacks and a strong recovery, Ridley is a great option for players who want to use a melee character at a high level.
In particular, Ridley’s dominance in the air is one of his biggest strengths. From tilts that come out incredibly quickly, to great recoveries on his side special, Ridley is a force to be reckoned with, in the right hands.
Kirby
With a range of buffs as of Patch 8.0, we’re really happy to finally be able to pop Kirby on this list, as one of, if not the easiest entry-level Super Smash Bros Ultimate character.
They might not have the strongest attacks, but Kirby certainly is the most forgiving, and with the most options too. Kirby’s most potent attack is the charging side special, a hammer which you are able to dish out a decent amount of damage to smash characters offscreen
In addition to this, Kirby’s recovery is incredibly generous, so if you are starting out in the game, or trying to get to grips with the basics, Kirby is a no-brainer.
Best Sword Fighters in Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Sword Fighters dominate a lot of our ‘Best’ tier, and for good reason. Their attacks have some decent range, and they use that to use space to their advantage. Sword fighters have excellent zone control, and often can also combo you into oblivion. Many Sword Fighters also have a ‘Counter’, which is essentially a parry, but have to be timed excellently. So what’s all the big fuss about? We go into detail with two of the best characters below.
Roy / Chrom
Roy and Chrom are more than just simple Marth clones. With fire damage side specials in addition to an excellent neutral air attack. Roy and Chrom are in our ‘Best’ tier, and it shows when coming face to face with them. They have incredible midair control and options, in addition to being able to dish out some incredibly hard hitting attacks. Combine that with some of the fastest running speed in the game, and you’re left with an absolute beast of a character.
Ike
Ike is a tank. His movement might not be the best, but when it comes to raw attack power, he’s hard to beat. Combined with handful of buffs, this is the best version of Ike yet.
Why? With a fast sweeping side special in addition to a neutral special that can be charged to erupt into three fire pillars, Ike is great when you’re surrounded, or have to deal with multiple enemies, his smashes can sweep up multiple enemies, and while slow, they can KO Characters at less than 75% damage when coming out raw.
Hero
This new DLC character is one of the most unpredictable characters out there, with great range and a huge range of spells at his disposal, Hero can even do a 1 hit kill, if the RNG gods smile upon you with the list of spells you get when hitting down special.
Either way, he has a very good run speed, as well as being able to KO at low percentages with your neutral special or side tilt. Hero might just be the best character in the game, for now.
Byleth
Byleth isn’t strictly another sword fighter, but sure does fight in the same style as one, with a number of options by their side, you can expect Byleth to KO others at low percentages with the lance and axe attacks, which may be a good strategy if you manage to dominate through usage of the bow, employing responsible zone-control where necessary.
Coupled with a pretty generous recovery, Byleth is a good option for a mid-ranged fighter who can be potent in the right hands.
Best Ranged Fighters in Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Ranged Fighters are excellent at shutting down fast-moving characters and trapping those slower characters into a loop, all from a distance. Like their name might imply, they might be in a spot of trouble when up close against a good melee fighter, but with the options available to you to keep them at a distance and dish out the pain leading up to a powerful smash, Ranged Fighters are no joke.
Simon / Richter
Simon and Richter are exceptional ranged fighters. Namely, the Holy Water, Throwing Axe and Boomerang are all deadly combos for pretty much any character. With the Axes being thrown at an arc, they hit incredibly hard, and can KO high percentage characters.
Combined with the horizontal control with the boomerang, you can complete your setup by trapping them with your Holy Water and charging a whip attack. This deadly concoction can shut down almost any character.
Samus
While not quite as potent as Simon or Richter, Samus is a great beginner ranged fighter. With missiles and a chargeable blast, Samus is a good starting point to build from when it comes to fighting ranged.
She has some trouble when fighting up-close, but when practicing your ranged game with Samus, she has enough options to build from and take to a better character. Samus has value, if not just for being a great starting point to use as a ranged fighter.
Ready to get started playing as some of the above fighters? Our Super Smash Bros Ultimate character unlock can help you start getting your hands on them.
Banjo and Kazooie
Rare’s finest fighter is finally in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and they’re a very situational duo. Banjo and Kazooie we’ve found is best at range and closing distance when you’ve softened them up with your ranged attacks.
The feathers that appear above your head mean that you only have five side specials per stock, and they deplete with each use. But, if you use them wisely along with your throw, you can end up with some great setups to smash your enemies offstage.
Banjo’s down spike smash attack is also great, but you’ll have to make sure the enemy is at a pretty high percentage and if you can land safely. They’re a pretty tricky character to learn and not super strong, but we’ve found are incredibly fun to play as.

She found out about QQ bangs the next day…
And the accessories provide no actual stat buff. The accessory shop owner must’ve really had it out for her.
Yep. The average newbie time patroller experience.

“ Yeah, I think I’ll just stay over here, for now. “
Sure, the Supreme Kai of Time’s pudding is an actual safety hazard, but there’s plenty of other places to get food from in Conton.
