Where To Find and Use Black-Out Roller Blinds- GetBlinds.co.uk
To find the right window treatments, you would like to know your main goals. Are you trying to dam out light completely to make serene and relaxing spaces? does one want to spice up privacy? Perhaps you would like to stop heat loss and reduce your energy bills? If you said yes to any of those questions, a blackout window shade could be the simplest fit.
Here, we’ll show you what a blackout window shade is. We’ll offer recommendations on where to use these blinds and highlight their benefits. Plus, you’ll discover where to seek out gorgeous blackout roller blinds and obtain resources for creating the buying process enjoyable.
Tumblr media
What Are Blackout Roller Blinds?
Roller blinds are window shades that feature a bit of cloth that rolls up and down onto a headrail. These blinds offer a sleek and straightforward look, making them popular for little windows and houses with minimalist design. They’re different from light filtering blinds — referred to as dimout blinds — that allow some light to penetrate the material and enter the space .
Roller blinds are available an enormous range of materials from voile and pretend silk and cotton to polyester and PVC fabrics. a number of these blinds also feature waterproof and flame retardant capabilities. There also are corded and cordless versions counting on your preferences.
A blackout blind may be a blind made with a blackout fabric or a blackout lining. These materials prevent light from filtering in between the material weave. meaning they block out unwanted light completely and increase privacy. With a real blackout window shade , you won’t be ready to see through the material . If you hold a flashlight behind the material , you shouldn’t see any light coming through in between the material weave.
Blackout blinds are available a good range of colors . You’ll find neutrals like taupe, grey and ochre also as vibrant hues like teal and cerise . additionally to varied colours, blackout roller blinds also are available in prints and patterns to suit most interior design themes.
Blackout options aren’t limited to roller blinds. You’ll also find blackout vertical blinds, roman blinds and excellent fit blinds. While wooden blinds are often sold as blackout blinds, they aren’t as effective as fabric styles. That’s because the slats allow light to seep in between. If you would like an entire blackout effect, persist with fabric styles like roller blinds.
Where To Use Blackout Roller Blinds
Blackout roller blinds are popular because they’re easy to use and offer maximum light and privacy control. Since these window blinds block out all unwanted light, they’re perfect for spaces where you would like privacy or where a dark environment is useful . Here are a number of the simplest rooms to use blackout roller blinds in.
Bedrooms
Bedrooms, nurseries and children’s bedrooms are among the foremost popular places for blackout roller blinds. By blocking out light, the blinds create a dark environment that has been shown to enhance sleep. they’re particularly useful in bedrooms that face a streetlight and on skylights where the moon can shine through and disrupt your rest.
Most high-quality roller blinds feature built-in child safety devices. meaning you’ll safely mount these window dressings in nurseries and children’s rooms.
Bathrooms
Blackout roller blinds also are popular in bathrooms because they increase privacy. If your home features a bathroom on the bottom floor that faces the road or a ladies’ room that neighbours can peer into, adding a blackout window shade can protect your privacy. Since bathrooms tend to be laden with moisture, it’s best to settle on a blind that’s made with a moisture-resistant or waterproof fabric to stop mould growth. Nylon, polyester and waxed cotton are all great options.
Offices
Offices are another space that’s perfectly fitted to blackout roller blinds. Many folks work on our computers lately and bright sunlight can make it difficult to read a screen. The sun also can be blinding, especially if your chair faces a window. Adding a blackout window shade may be a good way to regulate light so you’ll stay productive. you’ll adjust the blind throughout the day counting on the peak and angle of the sun, to stay light out and make it easier to ascertain your screen.
In addition, a blackout window shade offers privacy if you’re meeting with clients. you’ll use a blackout window shade if your office is found during a large building with other offices nearby. you’ll also add these window dressings to your headquarters to guard your privacy and keep passersby from peeking in.
Theater and Entertainment Rooms
Movie rooms and entertainment spaces are increasingly common in new homes. Whether your home features a full surround sound cinema otherwise you carved out a comfortable nook for cuddling up with the family, blackout roller blinds can create the right ambiance for movie watching. The blinds block out light from street lights, cars passing by and therefore the moon. This creates a totally dark environment so you don’t need to worry about glare on the screen.
Living and Dining Rooms
Blackout roller blinds are incredibly versatile, meaning you’ll use them almost anywhere. They’re right reception in living rooms and dining rooms where you’ll want to shut the shades and boost privacy.
These blinds also can help to scale back your energy costs, making them ideal for each room in your home. search for thermal blackout roller blinds, which feature thick fabrics. These fabrics create an insulating layer between the glazing and therefore the room. This prevents heat loss during the colder months and may keep heat from the sun out when the temperatures soar.
Entryways
Entryways often face the road , making them vulnerable to prying eyes. By adding a blackout window shade to your front entrance or entryway windows, you’ll boost privacy and keep your home safe. Plus, window blinds are an excellent thanks to add kerb appeal to your home.

The Sad & Current State of Fear The Walking Dead by Stephen Vivian
Link
When Fear The Walking Dead debuted in 2015 it became the most watched pilot episode in Cable TV history. Today, in it’s current fifth season, it whimpers along with less than a million and a half of live viewers. While the show’s ratings have steadily declined since it’s debut to 10.13 million viewers just over four years ago, it’s current reboot under co-showrunner’s and executive producers Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg is a far cry from a success.
In fact, less than two seasons into their reboot the show has gone from an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes to a 66% amongst critics. And even worse, the audience score has dropped from 72% to an abysmal 36%.
This steep decline in quality has been a concern for die-hard fans who believed the show had finally found its footing in its season three outing. During that season the show stabilized it’s ratings and improved it’s critical consensus and it appeared the show was on track to outpace its parent series in quality. But less than two years later The Walking Dead has seen a resurgence in quality while Fear has dropped to all-time lows.
So what went wrong?
ERICKSON OUT; GIMPLE, CHAMBLISS and GOLDBERG IN
Fear was co-created by Robert Kirkman, who created the original comic series The Walking Dead, and Dave Erickson. Erickson served as showrunner for the first three seasons and it was his vision for the show to set itself apart from its parent series by focusing on a gritty family drama set amidst the growing apocalypse. His focus on the Clark family was taking shape and by season three it was apparent that lead actress Kim Dickens’ character, Madison Clark, was being written to serve not only as the shows main antihero but it’s burgeoning villain. She had done everything in the name of survival and didn’t take bullshit from anyone.
Her defining moment came in the two-part season three opener where she declared that it was their fate to take the ranch from its current leadership and that it would be their right to take it if it secured their survival. And so began Madison’s manipulations, starting with her and her kids ingratiating themselves into the Otto’s lives to prove their worth and keep them apart of the inner workings of the ranch. This mission – and her brutality in carrying it out – were beginning to take its toll on the very people she strived to protect: her children.
Alicia grew wary of Madison’s tactics and started to grow into her own, becoming a leader who undoubtedly would have to one day deal with opposing her mother as Madison reached full blown villain status. And even Nick, who Madison was obsessed with protecting and keeping by her side, began to see his mother’s brutality as alarming when she killed Troy with very little hesitation.
The dynamic between these three and how it would further be explored had taken the show to new heights, but sadly the writing was already on the wall when it was revealed that Dave Erickson would be departing the series as showrunner and was to be replaced by Once Upon a Time alums Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg, both brought in by Scott Gimple who had taken on a larger role in The Walking Dead Universe by overseeing the development of both shows.
GIMPLIFICATION
Fans were wary of Gimple’s new involvement with the series. He had overseen The Walking Dead for five seasons. And while seasons four and five of the main show were critical and ratings successes, the problems with his leadership began to pop up in a very divisive season six. By season seven The Walking Dead had seen a drastic downturn in both critical and ratings success, culminating with Gimple’s departure as showrunner after season eight.
Hallmarks of Gimple’s leadership – splitting up the cast, drawing out story arcs that reduced the pace of the show to a crawl, and having characters act and speak illogically and in repetitive monologues were now on their way to Fear, a show that had earned its success from separating itself from the identity of its parent show through showcasing a grittier, more realistic portrayal of the zombie apocalypse. Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg were just the nails in the coffin as they would take these hallmarks and double down on them with reckless abandon.
DRASTIC CHANGES OF REBOOTING
The reboot swiftly introduced a time jump to bring the show in line with The Walking Dead for the sole purpose of crossing over Morgan Jones, a character whose story arc had been on a rinse-and-repeat cycle on The Walking Dead for far too long. Having him crossover could have been a great way to explore his character and breathe some life back into him, but sadly the showrunners simply doubled down on what was wrong with Morgan’s character in the first place.
Worse of all they decided to stunt all other characters growth and put them on a trajectory to adopt Morgan’s boring character traits, ultimately watering them down to unquestioning, idiotic do-gooders who do not worry about any personal matters but instead the larger group mission of do good at all costs; even if it means killing themselves to save someone who refuses their help and is more-than-likely going to result in getting more people killed.
The problems were readily apparent right from the outset of the first episode – an episode dominated by Morgan and new characters Althea and John Dory. No OG Fear characters were introduced until the very closing minutes of the show. And in the following seven episodes the original cast took even more blows, as both Nick and Madison Clark were killed off the show. The core dynamic of the show and the interesting premise of the original pitch of the series had been decimated in less than 8 episodes.
It was clear that Andrew and Ian had no regard for the cast who had been there since day one and who had given such great performances to carry the show to critical success. And once again they doubled down on new characters that had no depth, dimension or individuality in favour of propping up Morgan Jones as the new lead of the show.
BIGGEST GRIPES WITH SEASON FOUR & FIVE
The new cinematography style was to strip out all colour and use a hideous grey filter. Since the show was split into two timelines – the THEN timeline featuring the OG cast at the Dell Diamond, and the the NOW timeline featuring Morgan Jones meeting up with our remaining survivors – it was assumed the use of grey filter was meant to contrast the generally bright colours of the NOW timeline. Perhaps a thematic device to showcase the differences in the state of mind of Alicia, Nick, Strand and Luciana as they were on a mission of vengeance. But when that story was resolved in the mid-season finale, it was assumed we would return to normal colouring. Sadly, we were not.
Characters acting dumb, delivering nonsensical dialogue and out of character in order to service the plot. This is always one of the worse creative decisions a writing team could make and it was clear it was one the new showrunners were embracing. As I mentioned before, Madison Clark was a growing villain who would stop at nothing to keep herself and her kids safe. Suddenly in season four she was a leader of hope for the show, doling out idiotic, non-sensical lines such as “no one is gone until they’re gone”. Go back to episode 3x08 and listen to Madison tell her kids about how she killed her father to protect her mother against his abuse and how she was going to go talk to another old man, Jeremiah Otto, alluding to her reconciling that she would have to kill him to protect Alicia and Nick and you will see a vast difference in dialogue.
Gimmicks! The plot doesn’t serve to move the characters or the story forward in any meaningful or realistic way. Instead it’s as if the writers came up with these “cool moments” they think will look good on screen, and try to just connect the dots with nonsensical plot points and character direction to make it happen. Let’s not even get too into the airplane that they flew despite none of the people on the plane being a pilot, or the nuclear reactor breakdown that was supposed to present a huge threat but was resolved very anti-climatically.
And the cardinal sin that the new showrunners have committed is sidelining the previously well-developed OG characters in favour of new, poorly developed characters. First of all, if the decision to kill Madison off was to actually serve a true purpose for the story and the characters instead of this superficial “it’s what Madison would want us to do”, then the show should have rightfully been inherited by and led by Alicia. For starters, Alycia Debnam-Carey has a large following as an actress. And, as a character, is the biggest draw for the audience. Not only is she the last Clark standing, but she was on a trajectory to becoming a strong leader in her own right. But instead they felt the show would be better served with Morgan as the lead. It’s a shame because the show had a lot of potential by shifting focus to Alicia, but as it stands now, not even our OG characters or Morgan, the shows misplaced lead character, are strong enough to carry this show.
CAN THE SHOW BE SAVED? CAN IT DO BETTER?
I sure hope so. I haven’t followed steadily since episode 4x09. That episode bored me to tears. And no matter how many times I’ve tried to sit down and watch episodes from the latter part of season four or episodes of season five, I just simply can’t bring myself to do it. There’s just no motivation for me to keep watching. Nothing ever really happens. No one has grown in new and surprising or compelling ways. The show hasn’t had a message or a narrative worth investing in, because let’s be real the simplicity of “we’re here to help” is not a story. It’s a singular ideology adopted by EVERY character, no matter how senseless and idealistic it is.
I think there’s several ways to reinvigorate the show and get it back on track. To start, the show could learn to take risks. The show isn’t willing to take any risks right now and it’s painful. Given the world they live in and the threats they face, we should be seeing characters go down darker paths or even killing again. We don’t even get any real sources of conflict. It’s all contrived conflict to make it seem like there’s a threat to our characters when there is none. At. All.
Why not kill off a character without fanfare and have the real ramifications be the source of conflict. I thought they might have been able to pull this off after Nick’s death, but that fell flat too.
Imagine June dying and John growing darker wanting to avenge her. Imagine Morgan going all “clear” mode again and not coming back from it. He’d be far more interesting as a loose cannon who could no longer lead or support the people he rounded up into his mission. Imagine Madison returning in her true, pre-season four form and struggling to adapt to the groups mission and suddenly start pulling Alicia, Strand and Daniel’s loyalty away from the group. There are just so many, endless ways the show could create conflict without having to outsource it to inadequate villains, such as Martha or Logan.
There are so many themes to explore in a post-apocalyptic show. Season three was dealing with scarcity of resources and how it was causing conflict amongst survivors struggling to find supplies. In season five, it seems that they have unlimited resources with battery power for their walkie talkies, generators, video recording equipment, planes and hot air balloons. Enough already. This isn’t realistic. Logan, the shows current villain, if you can even label him as one, would be far more dangerous if the resources in the area were dwindling, as they would be, and he was pushed to the brink by trying to secure whatever was left for his groups survival. He wouldn’t be politely asking for directions to oil fields. He’d be taking it at gunpoint and killing people to get it.
The possibilities in this genre are unlimited. But one thing is for certain, since the show lost it’s true lead in Madison Clark, the series hasn’t felt right. Kim Dickens was wrongfully dismissed from this show, in my opinion. And until she is brought back I don’t think that the show will ever truly recover.
In short, Bring Back Madison, have her be the bad-ass, manipulative antihero she is meant to be, and have her character be a source of conflict for the group and Alicia. Imagine Alicia’s loyalties being torn between the mother she thought she lost and the group she has now called a family. Madison would be the best kind of bad influence on both Strand and Daniel, who were characters who thrived in the grey areas of morality under Erickson’s leadership, creating a far more dynamic and distinct direction for the series. It would also be a direction worthy of the acting talent that this show has in riches but sadly doesn’t utilize to it’s fullest potential.

Who Are You? Evaluation
For this brief, we were tasked with a brief that completely surrounded us and not someone of importance to us, the Who Are You brief is about us and a way for us to tell people about ourselves without the use of words. We were to put together three images: a self-portrait, an object of our choice and a location of our choice, we were then to put them into a triptych.
I enjoyed this project because it was a challenge thanks to Covid-19 as well as my lack of confidence in my own face. A self-portrait involves me and no filters to interfere or some sort of editing to change it up more, it’s a portrait that is me and nothing but me. I had some issues regarding lighting for my self-portrait as the day I had shot it, it was miserable outside and dull, I only had natural window light to work with, I had a bedroom light too but it didn’t really help much. So I worked with the lighting I had and it turned out rather well as it helped to tie in my love of gothic clothing, pendants, etc.
The project helped me to understand better about the different types of self-portraiture styles, it could be a number of methods, using a mirror, reflections in puddles, darkness etc, the portrait could be anything I wanted as long as it told the viewer about me and about things I love without actually adding the words. I admit, I had fun putting together the portrait and object images involving my polaroids, while I don’t like my face being photographed, I do enjoy getting my photo taken. It’s a little........eternal struggle I have thanks to being anxious 24/7.
I would like to improve the skill on using photoshop as this has made my making of a triptych rather difficult, it didn’t help either that the “guides” on my city are rather difficult for me to follow, I prefer a complete step-by-step guide on things because it helps me to know exactly what I’m doing, I respond better to tick boxes or “step 1″ and so forth, whereas the guides on My City mainly involve a lot of wording and I struggle to take that in a lot of the time. So I have had issues with that, but aside from resizing the images and putting them into a triptych canvas, I enjoyed the brief.
I researched a variety of photographers during this project to help me get a better understanding of the idea, I researched Vivian Maier, Robert Mapplethorpe and Andy Warhol.
Looking into the different work by each photographer I researched on helped to give me a strong understanding of each photographer has their own way of doing things, what appeals to them rather than others, their own little approaches to the area of portraiture they worked in, their approach to things is just as important as the outcome itself. It helped me to see more that while I need to put together a self-portrait, it didn’t need to be a basic portrait, it could be anything of my choice, whether it be creative, simple or other. For me personally, I preferred the idea of making my face part of the portrait because it helped to add my anxiousness into the shoot. Anxiety is a big part of my life, it’s something I’m fighting with every day especially now that we’re in lockdowns and I’m not able to get out often and boost that confidence and fight against it, so I felt adding it into my portrait was a strong method to use and I feel I captured it well.
The most successful part of this project for me was the portrait itself. I didn’t think I would capture a portrait I truly liked because I was in in it, but I liked the one I used because it hid my eyes and took focus away from them, the polaroid images in my hands became my “eyes” and were the main focus along with my jewellery, tattoos and clothing. It was a successful image for me and it fit how I liked it, I enjoyed optimising the images too and made them a little darker. My aim here was to try and give off a sort of memory affect, as the theme was memories surrounding polaroids. If I had to reshoot again, I would make sure I had much better lighting to give my skin more colour as I look just a little too pale or “cold”, centre my pendants more and make sure the lighting I had to work with was better, meaning not shooting on a rainy day like I had.
For this brief, I could have improved my use of natural lighting, I had many days where I had sun soaring the skies and those days would have been ideal for the portrait, instead, I chose a day where it was rainy, dull skies and not great lighting. It helped to set a mood for my portrait, but it wasn’t entirely the mood I was going for.
The brief helped me to become more confident on using my real face, to not hide it using filters or some sort of playful editing, I enjoy doing HND photography because every photo taken of me involves me and my real face, it helps me to become more confident in myself as a person.
What were my Strengths and weaknesses throughout this project ?
Pre production
Research
I think my research was rather efficient throughout this brief as I researched numerous photographers I took interest in and they each had their own genre of photography they worked on. I looked at my images with a critical eye, to help me see where I went wrong and where I had to improve and I looked into the different styles of triptychs and self-portraits.
Planning and practicing
For my planning part of the brief, I looked into different methods of using ambient lighting and window light for my portrait, I researched and headed to locations for some recce shots to see what I had to work with, where I could go etc.
Shooting
For this stage, I was to go and shoot my portrait, my object and location shots. I believe I did well in shooting these as I experimented with the different devices, viewpoints, apertures, compositions and focal lengths. I think where I could of improved would have been the focusing of my images, to me, when I look through the viewfinder, it looks clear to me, but when I open up the image on camera raw, I see where it is and isn’t clear. I need to learn to see better through the viewfinder in order to see for certain if I have a sharp image or not.
Post-production
The atmosphere I was going for was rather dull and distant, the idea was to capture how memories and my anxiety, which isn’t a good feeling and is rather negative, so I tried to make the image darker and a little more moody to fit the feel of anxiousness. I enjoy the optimisation part of my images because it helps me to see what needs improving, what doesn’t need improving and it helps me to better my images to make them more pleasing to look at.
For this part, I used Photoshop’s Camera Raw option, I enjoy this tool as it’s simple to use and doesn’t crash much.
To begin with though, I was using my images on a canvas but I had great difficulty fitting them onto the canvas and being an even size because I had one vertical image and two horizontal images. I put one image into a polaroid border as it was suggested I give it a try, but for me personally, I felt it looked silly on its own with just one polaroid frame. So I decided that maybe adding all of them into the polaroid frame style would look better, and thankfully it did. On today’s feedback, I realised that it looks a little messy around the edging of the image itself inside the polaroid. So I will be working on the triptych more just to tidy it up a little more and after I do that, I will have a good triptych for submission.
All in all, I had fun with this brief and it proved challenging in the way of making it about me and trying to tell the world about me without writing out words on it or using words vocally to tell people about me. I feel I captured my interests well and after some additional optimisation, my images link in well and look more tied in regarding my use of polaroids.

How to Save Instagram Stories & Download Story After 24 Hours
Daily users of Instagram sometimes struggle to perform a desired action from their smartphone. They know how to post stories, but when it comes to “save instagram stories”, they are clueless. The same is the case with “download instagram story”.
Instagram stories, a very popular feature of Instagram, enable the user to share their photos and videos either from the gallery or spontaneously shoot pictures or videos. One can add filters, emojis, location, hashtags, text etc.
An individual’s story can be viewed by his or her followers on the Instagram account. It is also possible for the user to send the story to specific individuals through DMs. These stories on Instagram are of ephemeral nature, this means that they disappear after 24 hours.
Instagram stories have created the best possible social experience, one of the reasons why they are so popular. An individual’s brain lights up with recognition of knowing the individual whose story they are viewing.
Uploading stories is a great option as one can post as many videos and pictures as they like without affecting their main feed.
Grabbing attention through Instagram stories is extremely effective and easy because people often catch attention through people’s faces. Our brains are trained to do so. It has made getting updates from different people more quick and easier. Instagram stories can be viewed as captivating good thrillers as the narration of stories unfold in real time. You can also save instagram stories that you share with a group of your contacts.
At times Instagram stories also give us an up close look on people’s lives which fills the biological hunger for gossip. It is very similar to snooping in other people’s lives, but our brain rewards us when we do that hence, it is so difficult to not look at Instagram stories. Download instagram stories is one of the features that can be used once you share it.
The most traditional reasons that creators use Instagram stories is to show a more personal and closer look on their lives. Secondly, Instagram stories offer an individual to show exclusive content on their page be it upcoming products or art. Lastly, Instagram stories ( if you don’t have a private account) help one reach a new audience that may share the same passion about your work or ideologies.
The newer and not-so- traditional uses of Instagram stories is the sharing of exclusive content, conducting interviews at events, Q&A videos for the audience who follow the creators work and lastly also getting feedback or opinions from one’s followers.

It also helps make promoted posts and advertise products which makes collaboration easier. It is often seen that most of the social media influencers have changed their account to business profiles to build their corporate identity and thereby increasing engagement. Instagram keeps you up to date with what’s going on or what are the latest trends.
Instagram has several disadvantages, including not having a proper desktop version, Linux incompatibility and allowing annoying advertising in your feed. But, the biggest  disadvantage of Instagram, is lack of privacy settings, as well as the chance of image theft.

Mind your metaphor
What these commonplace tropes reveal about your personality and how you can use them to your advantage.
A metaphor is simply an object or concept that stands in for another object or concept. The word metaphor is formed from two Greek roots: meta which means “over” and phor which stems from a word which means “carry” or “bear”. This conceptualisation of the metaphor as a simple word substitution was advanced by Plato and had remained largely
Metaphor consists in giving the thing a name that belongs to something else; the transference being either from species to genus, or from genus to species, or from species to species, on the grounds of analogy. (Poetics 1457b 6-9)
Our mouths we cannot ope, But out there falls a trope.—Monsieur Jourdain in Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme.
Life is like a game of chess, ourselves being the pieces. There are kings, queens, nights, and pawns – all are of the same substance, and at last all are thrown into the same box.
We use figurative language to express an idea in a certain picturesque, optical way.
Figurative language can also be used in a non-picturesque sense, for various elliptical expressions employed for rebuke, satire, pathos, tactfulness, or to dissemble.
Walter Mosley says that “the metaphor is the strongest linguistic intimation in the writer’s bag of tricks. Once you set a metaphor in a reader’s mind, it will free their imaginations and help you tell your tale”.
According to Aristotle, “the greatest thing by far is to master the metaphor” going so far as to say that it is a “sign of genius, since a good metaphor implies an intuitive perception of the similarity in dissimilars”.
Metaphors reveal the inner workings of the man, his thoughts and beliefs. {use of particular metaphors reveal/indicate the speakers expectations about the [shared?] life experience of his listeners} By paying attention to metaphors, we learn to receive messages from others more clearly {and decipher their meaning more intelligently}. Attention to metaphors can improve the {depth and precision} of our ability to express ourselves and how we perceive the expressions of others. {Metaphors filter our conceptual structures in crucial ways}. In a wider sense, metaphors are embedded in systems of images and meanings}. Images are central to the efficacy of the metaphor in creating strong {impressions} by using {familiar images}.
Metaphors in spoken language have become so commonplace that we do not even recognise them as such anymore.
A simile is a metaphor grown conscious of itself.
A pier is a disappointed bridge.
Figures of speech are {spontaneous utterances::impulsive expressions} of the universal human mind.
Morphologically, the word metaphor stems from two Greek roots: {“meta” meaning over and “phor” which stems from a verb meaning “carry” or “bear”}. Metaphor is not a literary device {restricted to} the artistically elite poets. At its most elementary level, usage of metaphor involves the {extension and amplification} of meanings. These mental excursions result in a certain amount of disorder, but also a certain amount of discipline that the limits of the words’ entomology imports, which is the wellspring of creativity. {Indeed it is one of the paradoxes of art that structure, form, and convention liberate the artist}{In truth, a word or sentence is changed from one sense to another only insofar as its etymology imports}.
{The power of implicit comparison.} {Metaphor uses the contrary state of things with equal effect.}
Our minds constantly seek to make new to known connections. The process of transaction through metaphor – invoking both similarities and dissimilarities – is a way to perceive the new through the old. As I. A. Richards suggests, pattern-questing is at the heart of the process of interpretation. An experience leaves no sensations imprinted on the mind, but rather {the mind?} our interpretation or response to the experience is in the form of perceptions, shaped by the present experience and simultaneous, analogous experiences from the past.
The figure does not change the meaning of the words, but {enlivens, ennobles, or embellishes}. The word is only removed from its {proper signification} into another meaning {upon account of comparison}. That is, we eschew the banal [commonplace?] sense for what is new and foreign. {Every Metaphor is addressed to the senses, especially to the sight, which is the keenest of them all (cf. Cicero)}. But the metaphor is not verbal juxtaposition, a shifting displacement of words, but a {borrowing between intercourse of thought}.
Oak trees are green-robed senators.
The soul is dyed by the colour of the thoughts.
{The universal human mind} sees colour and shape in a notion. We discover {a scheme of thoughts}{new ideas and relationships} to emotions, feelings, and sentiments traced out over the material object. {Metaphors give character to a thing and set it before the eye.} When conjuring a metaphor, {introspection is necessary to bring the earlier stages of a thought to light, to delay the evolution towards conclusion for a moment, or to call it back so that one may become aware of its several steps}. Poetic metaphors are {expressions of unfinished thought}. {The poet is interested in perception for its own sake and not in its rationalisation to a conclusion. He is accustomed to note his own impressions with particular vividness and arrest the process at the point of expression.}
An idea is a feat of association, and the height of it is a good metaphor. ROBERT FROST
{Metaphors gratify because} two of the mind’s faculties are gratified at the same time – the intellect and the fancy. {The fancy must be necessarily invoked in order for the mind to transcribe the idea out of the intellectual into the material}. Though they require as much (mental exertion} as plain statement, since one thinks in images first and then in abstractions, {to have an idea presented to the mind in its inchoate stage may be more pleasing} metaphors decrease the amount of energy put in by the mind that is conscious or forced. When we encounter a metaphor, our minds {flit involuntarily} between the two {seemingly disparate images}, without being able to settle upon any one image. Eventually our mind is forced to {unify/reconcile?} the two images in some way. We are
Metaphors with novelty and darling create vivid impressions.
As Gertrude Buck says, Metaphor is the first stage through which \
So when we say that oak trees are green robed senators / pine trees are sentries /
Metaphor may thus be designed or unconsciously constructed. The metaphor unconsciously constructed is distinguished as a poetical metaphor by Gertrude Buck, when “a noun or verb ready made and assigned to one definite object or action is transferred poetically to another object or action.” {The contrived metaphor is a meretricious device.} A genuine poetic metaphor emerges from a desire to beautify speech. The salubrious effects? The process gratifies the writer through pleasure in indulging in the natural law of adornment.
An ambiguous language / Metaphors overcome the limitations of the language
Words work within contexts and have no intrinsic meaning. Thus, a dictionary definition of a word must be supplemented by rich contextual references. This ambiguity is not a fault in our language to be remedied, but a powerful construct of the language.
Very simply, we develop conceptual structures {for what?} Metaphors filter our conceptual structure {are metaphors beliefs?}
A mind, like a home, is furnished by its owner, so if one’s life is cold and bare he can blame none but himself. LOUIS L’AMOUR
Manufactured metaphors/Why metaphor gets a bad rep
Ancient rhetoricians believed that all discourse was intended to produce a certain effect upon the hearer. {Say this that you may placate him; this to win his confidence; attempt by a third device to inflate? his ego}. Those metaphors which we perceive to be manufactured by conscious effort of the mind directed to end of making a figure whose sole purpose is to be pleasing to the reader are dismissed as mere word substitution, intended to titillate the reader’s fancy {and are beneath the dignity of a real artist}.
Similes, on the other hand, are {deliberate}, {apposite}, and manufactured analogies – {the universal instrument of the interpreting faculties}.

Social Media is like crack and crack my friends is WACK.
In my 23 years of life the world has gone through a time of huge technological advancement, I remember dial-up internet and now everyone has an iPhone X, and you can get WiFi in the tube, which to me is still weird. And during this we witnessed the birth of what came to be called Social Media, starting with Facebook and MySpace, then Blogger and Bebo, now Instagram and Pinterest, how many incarnations of these platforms have we lived through already? It all came from this deep primative urge we humans have to socialise and connect with others, these platforms were built for exactly that to create connections between us. Facebook’s slogan was “Facebook is a social utility that connects you with the people around you.” More hilarious and I think apt options for Facebook slogans can be found here. The funny thing is although made with this purpose in mind, social media has been found to do the exact opposite,  it pushes us away from each other and into our devices. It may have been the creators intention but “Connection” is not a word I would use for SM now, the more accessible all these platforms have become to us the less time people spend actually connecting. Which is where my first issue with SM lies, it’s removing us all from the MOMENT, instead of letting an event or feeling happen, we have to tweet it or capture it and post it. When this comes to health and fitness it means you’re distracted from the actually doing of the fitness and more interested in putting up an Insta-story of you post-workout shake. Outside of fitness, I mean come on, how many times have you been sat in with friends and they’re all so sucked into their phones they aren’t even listening, it’s maddening how involved and invested we’ve become with something that’s not even real. Psychology Today which is a great website for any of you who like geeking out about everyday things has a great article linked here all about the different ways social media ruins everything, which sounds extreme but their reasons are pretty accurate.
Being the first generation of teens to be ‘plugged in’ and living with social media, I have experienced first-hand how much all this tech can impact your self-esteem and if anything this fact has only become more apparent with ‘influencers’ and bloggers showing you exactly what your life “should” look like, it’s hard to not take a serious self esteem hit every time you go online. Working in the fitness industry it’s hard to not feel that pressure of what your life should be like, if it’s not the fittest and healthiest life, one where you train every day, constantly motivated, getting a great night’s sleep every night and eating 100% clean. And that’s pretty hard to keep up when you remember that we’re all actually HUMAN and trying to balance living and surviving in London, attempting to maintain a social life, maybe even a relationship and stay sane. Some days it’s completely impossible.
Specifically I find that “Fitness” and “Wellness” accounts are the worst culprits of this, out of all the people you follow, how many tell you about how sh*t their workout was yesterday or how this morning they couldn’t fit in their yoga class because they just couldn’t sleep last night, I would hazard a guess at less than 1 out of every 100. It’s not hard to assume that only a hand full are transparent about how they’re training, how much they’re training and how they really feel day-to-day. I’d also like to point out that fitness accounts on social media is very clone-like, if you’re not super lean blonde tall tanned and head-to-toe in Gym Shark, then you’re not fit. I call BS. Fitness is not a size, a skin colour, a hair texture, a height, a body fat %, it’s just not. And that’s not to say that if you are a person who is naturally quite lean, or you’re blonde, or you wear gymshark that I’m sending for you because I’m really not, more power to you, but what I am trying to highlight to everyone is that COMPARISON WILL NEVER BRING YOU JOY ON YOUR FITNESS JOURNEY.
Now don’t get me wrong I think social media can be used as a great tool, if used in a productive way and I’m not perfect up here on my soap box, I’ve followed people who I know made me feel shitty about myself because it’s almost addictive to scroll infinitely through beautiful images of beautiful people. And I caught myself completely craving that gratification we seem to get from likes and comments on new photos. But if unchecked it can wreak havoc on our mental health. So, if you’ve never done this before I am recommending a social media PURGE. Go through each stream that you have be them Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and UNFOLLOW every single person that makes you feel even vaguely bad about yourself, your body, face, life, fitness level, all of it, get them OFF OF YOUR FEEDS. Because that is the first step to reclaiming your social media as YOUR OWN.
Social Media is just a highlight reel, most people on their especially those who are getting paid to post or advertise are not showing you a full well rounded version of their lives, they’re showing you the best bits. Thankfully, we are learning and children in schools now are being taught how to manage themselves online and keep themselves safe. A study found that the mere presence of a phone while people are talking interferes with their ability to feel levels of closeness, connection, and communication, so we’ve got to check ourselves, have NO TECH days, make your friends leave their phone in their BAG while you’re having dinner, make your partner turn their devices OFF on Date night, because we don’t have anyone to teach us this, we missed that boat, we’re having to figure that out for ourselves and it’s not going to be easy.
We live in an age where the infinity scroll gives you constant distraction but also gratification, where the number of likes we get reflects directly on to how we feel about ourselves. But guess what, your self-worth cannot be quantified by how many likes you get on your smoothie bowl picture and uploading a picture of said smoothie bowl doesn’t undo the pizza and McDonalds you ate last night after leaving the club and although you’re currently hungover your followers think you’re living your best life, eating well and being #fitspo.. do you see what I’m getting at? So, before you find yourself getting bogged down by social media and start question your real life and why it isn’t just like that girl on the beach in Bali with no under-eye bags, perfect hair and 6-pack abs with about 3 filters and Face Tune on it, remember that they’re probably uploading that while in their pyjamas, eating yesterday’s left overs with toothpaste on their jumper, or at least that what I’ll probably be doing when this goes up, but you’ll never know HAHAHAH. This is all to say you’re doing great, do a little social purge and keep hustling. If you’re interested in reading more about Social Media’s role in our lives and have some more science stuff thrown at you i would highly recommend “Why Social Media is Ruining Your Life” by Katherine Ormerod, you can get it on Audible, it’s a great book with loads of really great observations on our societies obsession with SM.
Signing off, lots of love,
xox

How the development of social networks has changed our way of perceiving images
According to Internet live stats, more than 40% of the global population has access to the internet and the number of people worldwide who join the web, with a computer or a mobile phone, increases every second. As I write these sentences, more than 3.5 billion of users are actually connected. As a matter of fact, “There are officially more mobile devices than people in the world (7.2 billion gadgets) and they’re multiplying five times faster than we are”, states an article on The Independent (Davies Boren, 2014). The most revolutionary electronic device of all time is certainly the computer, but the one that transformed forever our way of living is the mobile phone. Especially after the presentation of the very first “smartphone”, the Apple’s iPhone, at the beginning of 2007, the way we think about technology and communication changed radically. We have been witnessed an exponential development of these accessories which are no longer just telephones, but they have become proper computers in miniature. If we think about it, they are something that complete ourselves as human beings by making our lives a lot easier: we can take photos and videos with they, we can take notes and make calculations, check our emails, the weather, the stock markets, we can navigate internet and use the maps to orient ourselves. Nowadays mobile phones have become and extension of our body, something that we can no longer live without.
As we assist to the development of these new technologies, industry experts also think about new ways of making use oh them. Apart from useful and helpful utillization of the means (like the examples mentioned above), a lot of “entertaining stuff” were invented in order to keep us more and more interested and engaged with the new gadgets on the market. Among the lots, there are the Social Media. By definition, social media is a “collective of online communication channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration” (according to whats.com) (Rouse, date unknown). The first one that became famous worldwide was MySpace, launched by founders Chris DeWolfe and Tom Anderson in 2003; the website was a social network platform where people, once registered, could share their personal life and interests with their friends and the rest of the world. Behind this idea there were infrastructures of human resources, server capacity, finance and technical expertise that worked for the site; the idea was so catching and the profits so high that the following years way more social media emerged. In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg, a university student, created, with the hep of few classmates, The Facebook, a social media which users intended to be restricted from those belonging to Harvard University. The basic structure and aim were similar to MySpace, with the difference that in a short amount of time it became the most popular website ever existed. These two social media, as many of the first ones, were concentrated on trying to connect people through live chats and exchanging of all sort of information, while websites focused only on images were still rare.
The revolution came alongside the development of Apple’s iPhones and its apps; the new mobile technology allows people to carry their social media accounts on their phones and so to have access to their personal profiles anytime, everywhere. As a matter of fact, a fully functioned new social media was born in the form of app only: Instagram. This social network was promoted in 2010 by its two founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger; it was born as a free mobile app only, focused on photo-sharing and soon it went viral. After several negotiations, in 2012 the brand was bought for US$1 billion by the Facebook owner which developed the app and dramatically increased the number of people registered in just two years. Some changes, of course, were made, such as the chance for users to directly connect their profile on Instagram to the one on Facebook and so the images shared in the first one would travel to the second more easily, making the connection between the two social media stronger than ever.
Currently, the Instagram icon is a white stylized symbol of a camera on a bright rainbow coloured background and the name was probably inspired by the old Kodak Instamatic of the 1960s: originally, in fact, the format of the pictures on Instagram was squared only, exactly like the one of the vintage camera and this was a very peculiar characteristic belonging to this singular app alone. The social media is quite simple to use (actually it is easier to practically use it rather then explain it in words): its main purpose is to upload images and short videos on to your personal profile, which you can modify at your convenience. The account page shows your username (which doesn’t necessarily have to be your real full name), the number of all the photographs you have upload (and a small copy of them as well), a profile picture, the number of followers and following people (which I will explain later in more details) and the chance to include your other personal website links and a small introduction. At the bottom page there are five different functions: your profile section, a list of notifications regarding likes and comments of you and people you follow, a camera switch to take pictures and videos directly from the app, a search button to find friends and have a look to other profiles that might interest you, and the Home page which shows a list of posts of users you follow. Last year, the Instagram Stories was introduced; it is basically an easier and more rapid way to share several moments of your life altogether with the web community. What makes this new function so appealing is that you can add captures directly on your photos, see how many people and who have looked at them, and that the whole thing will disappear forever after just one day (24 hours). This aspect was also criticized by many because of its evident similarity to another social media, Snapchat, which main purpose is to create a temporary story of images and chats that would disappear after 24 hours. Nevertheless, the upgrade resulted to be more than successful. On the other hand, to upload something definitive on Instagram is not that much difficult: you can do it directly from the app by pressing the small icon at the bottom centre, from the photo library on your phone, or even from other apps such as those designed to modify and correct images; once you have chosen a picture or a video, you can tag people and the place it was shot, correct it by adding filters (e.g. you can intensify the colours, transform it in to black and white, make the atmosphere more dream-like…), a small description and, more important, the hashtags. Instagram, alongside with Twitter, was the “supporter” of the hashtags; the term derives from the information technology industry whose experts often used the form of a word preceded by the hash symbol to highlight a special meaning in a text. In terms of the social network, the hashtags not only complete the significance of a photo, but they also allow other people to find your post by typing the same word in the search function of the app. Other people can comment, like and share your post with other users, or even report it if they consider the image somehow inappropriate, but they cannot save it in their phone. To start interacting with other contacts, you need to create your personal community of “followers”, that is that you want as many people as possible to follow your updates and keep up with your activity as an “instagrammer”; it is obvious that you also have to be a follower of someone in turn. To find people you just need to search them by their username or real name and the most interesting thing is that one can actually follow the activity of celebrities and famous people as well as regular friends. In this sense we are able to feed our curiosity and admiration towards those people that we only see on television and whose lifestyle we feel so distant and surreal.
Along with celebrities profiles, Instagram offers agencies and associations the possibility to create a business profile in order to get more attention from the public; scrolling our Home page, we can sometimes find sponsored posts from pages we don’t actually follow and their appearance is based on our general interests guessed by system on the base of the profiles we follow. Sometimes, even artists and self-taught workers use this web platform as their own personal portfolio, a more practical and visible way to show their pieces; furthermore, as a mean of communication, people often avail themselves of Instagram as a starting point for social trends to become viral, especially fashion trends. By and large, this social network provides its users a huge variety of possibilities and this is the reason why it gained an incredible popularity in such a short time.
It is known that there are several more female users on Instagram than male ones, this fact is maybe the consequence of the general feeling of vanity that wafts throughout this social media. Even though it is not explicit, it is clear that the main intent of people who register themselves on the app, is to get some attention from people around the world by documenting and showing their lifestyle. That’s the reason why the most popular uploads portray ordinary things such as selfies, house pets, places where people travel and even food they eat. By doing so, in a sense, we are trying to obtain others’ approbation and make them wish they were us. This idea was well perceived by the business agencies, which started to pay attention to what people looked at on the web and so, then, they decided to send some inputs through the networks in order to understand the general feeling about a product before making a proper campaign. In this way, people also get the chance of participating somehow to the process of merchandising what they would suppose to buy at a later time. In this sense, Instagram, and so social media more in general, have changed not only the way people live, but also the whole industry of commerce. In an article for The Guardian, Hanna Ellis Petersen declare that “Seen through the filter of Instagram, the world is a beautiful place…” (Ellis Petersen, 2014) and that’s exactly what advertisement aims to spread as propaganda. For this reason, agencies started to contact and “recruit” users with a large number of followers (at least few thousand of them), offering products and then even compensation in exchange of pictures that showed these people using the products. The campaign was such a success that this method increased consistently the fame of both the company and the “instagrammer”. Indeed, some people were even able to make a proper career out of their hobby of photo-sharing; these lucky ones are now called “influencers”. Since the large part of Instagram users are people under 35 year-old who use social media daily, brands decided to use the influencers to get to a younger audience and they immediately understood the advantage of this kind of publicity: paying the web star was far cheaper than hire expert models, stylists and photographers. As Jason Stain, member of Laundry Service Agency for the recruitment of famous instagrammers, points out, the forefront mechanism is advantageous not only for the industry finances, but also for the Instagram photographer who has the chance of taking control over his/her own image. The reason why these new celebrities get so much attention from the world, is because common people can easily relate with them; they started with nothing but a fresh catching idea. As a matter of fact, anyone could become a web star with the right approach: an example is the 20 year-old Charlie Barker, an ordinary English girl with an obsession for David Bowie and Hello Kitty. She is an art student who lives in a flat with room mates in the suburbs of London, just like any other student, and who started to post photographs of herself and her eccentric wardrobe on Instagram. Somehow, people started to appreciate her lifestyle and thanks to her 590,000 followers she was noticed by various fashion companies which hire Charlie as a model. Barker is neither rich or full of special talents, but this is the reason why people admire her so much, they feel close to her.
A whole new category of superstar was born thanks to social media, the “influencer”, as I cited before, and they soon became more important than athletes, actors and musicians. The most striking case is represented by the Italian fashion blogger Chiara Ferragni. She was born in a rather small town in north Italy in 1987 and she opened her blog The Blonde Salad in 2009, while she was studying law at Bocconi University in Milan; the web page included sections about fashion, makeup, travel and lifestyle in general. The years that followed allowed her to gain a popularity beyond belief, making her a worldwide phenomenon. She published a book and she launched a new brand on her name becoming not only a blogger, but also a designer and business woman. Thanks to her fame, she moved to Los Angeles where she received various honours: she was mentioned in Forbes list of “Under 30”, a Barbie version of herself was merchandise and she was subject of studies at the business course of Harvard University. Today, she is consider the most important influencer worldwide and she was able to build an empire based only on her image. Her activity on social media, especially on Instagram, is what keep people interested, in fact she reached an outstanding number of followers: 7.7 million. This number, however, is nothing compared to the 89.8 million of people following the queen of social media Kim Kardashian, who became popular thanks to the media attention on her personal life. She is the kind of celebrity who is famous just for being famous and, however, people are so interested in what she does that Time Magazine listed her among the top 100 most influential persons on the entire planet. Kim is now known to be the ambassadress of selfies, the most common type of upload that we can find on Instagram. The “selfie” has a long history behind that started from the first experiments with photography during nineteenth century and continued with the development of Polaroid camera during the 1960s and 1970s; nevertheless, the huge step forward came along with the invention of digital and especially with the promotion of the iPhone 4 in 2010 which included a front camera, perfect for taking selfies. This practice is often seen as a narcissistic performance, but it actually hide a variety of other significances: according to Miriam Hardey, it is a way of representing ourselves in the best way, but at the same time makes us vulnerable to the judgment of the others; Gail Dines states that nowadays women are objectifying themselves through the obsession of how they should look, without even being aware of that; Rebecca Brown, on the other hand, uses selfies as a sort of diary to explore herself (Day, 2013). There is no right or wrong in any of these opinions, what is evident is that social media put us in the centre of the universe, as the journalist Kate Loss suggests (Loss, 2013), and we love it, we almost need it.
The rapid development of the new means of communication has caused a major impact on contemporary life and the psychological implications that this condition arises, are palpable. Doctor Michael Sinclair, psychologist specialized in social media, affirms that human’s craving for validation and admiration comes from some survival instinct: the more an individual is liked, the better are the chances to live longer (Sinclair, 2013). Indeed, if we think about it, our profiles are full of beautiful images, we choose to show the world only what we want it to see about ourselves. Because of that, internet has become the ultimate refuge, a virtual place where we are free to be happy and in our best shape all the time. This is a topic very familiar to professor Kristen Howerton, who, during a conference, explains how human beings process and deal with pain: when we experience bad feelings, we tend to find a way to escape them instead of facing them. Diversions are positive and healthy if used only momentarily, the real issue is when those distractions become central for our wellbeing, become an addiction. We allow them to take charge and control on our lives suppressing our emotions; if we stop feeling the bad, soon we’ll stop feeling the good too (Howerton, 2013). What this expert points out is that these internet platforms, as powerful as they are, are not necessarily bad, one only needs to balance the way he or she interacts with them. How many times during the day we open Instagram (or any other app) just because we are bored? How many times we feel the need of recording an experience instead of actually living it, as if it wouldn't really happen otherwise? We always put our mobile phone between ourselves and the reality in front of us, thinking that in this way we have control over what happen around us. In this sense, the actual image is no longer the important thing, but the gesture is. The sensation of not being only spectators in an era characterised by events that we cannot control, gives people hope and a purpose in life. Social media have the power of making people feel involved and constantly in touch with that hyperreal world which we all dream about.

HelloStar Shout Out Process & Difference between Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality.
Augmented and virtual reality have one big thing in common. They both have the remarkable ability to alter our perception of the world. Where they differ, is the perception of our presence. Virtual reality is able to transpose the user. In other words, bring us someplace else. Through closed visors or goggles, VR blocks out the room and puts our presence elsewhere. Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR, Google Cardboard, these are names you may have heard about by now. But if you haven’t tried virtual reality since that one arcade in the ’80s, be ready to be blown away by how far it’s come. Virtual reality (VR) immerses people in experiences, often with a lot of expensive technology such as headsets.
Augmented reality, on the other hand, usually starts with a real-life view of something (such as the camera of a mobile phone), and projects or inserts images onto the screen or viewer. Most people’s idea of virtual reality (VR) is heavily coloured by The Matrix, a tremendously popular 1999 movie about a deceptively realistic, virtual-reality future that was so indistinguishable from everyday life that the main characters originally believe that the simulation they’re in is real. Virtual reality is a computer-generated simulation of an alternate world or reality and is primarily used in 3D movies and in video games. Virtual reality creates simulations—meant to shut out the real world and envelope or “immerse” the viewer—using computers and sensory equipment such as headsets and gloves. Apart from games and entertainment, virtual reality has also long been used in training, education, and science. AR combines the physical world with computer-generated virtual elements. These elements are then projected over physical surfaces in reality within people’s field of vision, with the intent of combining the two to enhance one another.
Augmented reality inserts—or lays over—content into the real world using a device such as a smartphone screen or a headset. Whereas virtual reality replaces what people see and experience, augmented reality actually adds to it. Using devices such as HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Google Cardboard, VR covers and replaces users’ field of vision entirely, while AR projects images in front of them in a fixed area. Putting a VR headset over your eyes will leave you blind to the current world, but will expand your senses with experiences within. You might even find yourself on top of Mount Kilimanjaro. The immersion is quite dramatic, with some users reporting feelings of movement as they ascend a staircase or ride a rollercoaster within the virtual environment.
Mixed Reality (MR) is the use of both Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies to create an environment where physical and virtual objects can exist and interact in real-time. Mixed reality is a blend of physical and virtual worlds that includes both real and computer-generated objects. Mixed reality (MR) combines aspects of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). It sometimes called "enhanced" AR since it is similar to AR technology, but provides more physical interaction. Examples of augmented reality experiences include Snapchat lenses and the game Pokemon Go. There is also HelloStar Media who provides Augmented reality personalized video shout out services. When people require personalized video shout out messages HelloStar helps them. The requester can ask for a personalized message and the celebrity send a shout out message within few days.
Virtual reality (VR) implies a complete immersion experience that shuts out the physical world. In a Mixed Reality (MR) experience, which combines elements of both AR and VR, real-world and digital objects interact. At present, Mixed Reality (MR) systems are still being developed and fine-tuned. This technology is still not as widely available as separate VR and AR devices or software, although there are some real-world examples of mixed reality technologies in use today. Mixed reality devices like the Microsoft HoloLens 2 aren’t found everywhere just yet, although, with a steadily increasing number of applications and growing use in certain industrial and commercial fields, they certainly could be in the not-too-distant future. As we’ll see, most of the current use cases of mixed reality technologies are bespoke to a specific task or objective and have different applications within different fields or sectors.
Mixed reality is closer to augmented reality than virtual reality. Like MR, AR uses a real environment. It "augments" reality by overlaying virtual objects on top of it, such as a Snapchat filter. However, the user cannot interact directly with virtual objects. For example, AR has the capability to display a virtual 3D box on a physical table. With MR, the user might be able to pick up and open the box. VR entertainment has been around for decades and because of this, it’s the most acclimatized and most widely available of the three technologies. Augmented reality games and apps are coming out thick and fast since the success of Pokémon Go and there’s little reason to suspect they’ll disappear out anytime soon. But the mixed reality in entertainment is not only reserved for gaming.
AR and VR technology is improving so much that the film and big screen industry are after the vision of incorporating them into their movies. The idea of interactive storytelling which is a mix between a game and movie will open up lots of new doors for mixed reality. An example is the new Netflix series, You vs. Wild with adventure survivalist Bear Grylls, which lets you make decisions and change endings. Mixed reality entertainment is already here with companies like Magic Leap, Lucasfilm, and Industrial Light And Magic all looking to delve into mixed reality entertainment. For example, Magic Leap’s is embracing mixed reality in cinema by using what they call a Dynamic Digitised Lightfield Signal. Magic Leap’s tech projects images directly into the eye, without the need for it to bounce off an object and then head towards the eyes. This tricks the brain into thinking the object is there when in reality, it is a projection.
HelloStar shout out is another example of augmented reality and mixed reality. People who need personalized video messages from celebrities and influencers can send a request soon. The organization HelloStar is a medium between common people and their dream influencer. Whereas virtual reality replaces what people see and experience, augmented reality actually adds to it. Augmented reality uses existing reality and physical objects to trigger computer-generated enhancements over the top of reality, in real-time. As a person see their favourite celebrity on the screen of Television or internet device it is virtual reality. When the celebrity sends a personalized message or tags the fan somewhere it becomes an augmented reality.
The HelloStar team believes that there is a bigger untapped opportunity in India for the shout-out process, considering the craze around celebrities and influencer in India. The main objective behind starting up HelloStar is to shelter influencers in our business. Consuming the time, we want to spawn multiple revenue streams for them. Each influencer or celebrity who is listed on the HelloStar platform will get a satisfying rate. The user can click on their favourite celebrity and make a payment. he or she receives a shoutout within the next seven days. Any Bollywood celebrity who is used to be very close to his or her fans and care for their fans can join us. HelloStar Invites all. The influencers who stands on the platform made by their fans can easily make another source of money income. There are many content creators in local parts of India. Many of them got the golden play button from Youtube also. They feed on millions of Indian subscribers. The most interesting part is that the teenage and youngster public doesn’t miss any of their videos.
The educated young population loves virtual reality. Most of them wait for their beloved show to come in a different way with different content. Augmented Reality lets the user experience the real world, which has been digitally augmented or enhanced in HelloStar Application. Virtual Reality, on the other hand, removes the user from that real-world experience, replacing it with a completely simulated one. VR devices shut out the physical world completely. In other words, HelloStar AR allows influencers to enhance the current environment or situation by enriching the audience's perception through digitally enhanced stimulus. This is a huge distinction from VR which, although it immerses the viewer in a simulated environment, does not give the perception of the real world shifting. Influencers can reach audiences through HelloStar by sending personalized video messages and getting closer to them.

Incorporating Accessibility into Web Design
Is your website friendly to users with a disability?
You may have a fast website with the best content but it’s all for nothing if people can’t actually use it. Today, we’re talking about the state of accessibility. Is your website design friendly to users with disabilities?
Explanation of website accessibility
Accessibility is more important than most designers realise. We should see it as a feature of our website. The more accessible your website is, the more usable it will be to everyone. According to the World Health Organisation, 15% of the population has a disability, so implementing accessibility on your website will very likely get you more customers, but aside from that, your website will be more usable if you abide by all the accessibility standards.
If you follow all the best practices in web design, your site will be both accessible and provide better experience for the rest of your customers so it’s just good business practice (and it’s the right thing to do). It will create the best experience for everybody.
Ways that people with disabilities interact with the web
Depending on the disability that somebody has, they may use different sorts of assistive software such as a screen reader. So, if you’re blind for example, you might be using the web through a piece of software that reads to you using synthetic speech. It simply reads to you the contents of the screen (hence why it’s called a screen reader). If you’re partially sighted you might be using a magnifier, so you might be enlarging the size of the font, the size of the text, the size of the whole page, the size of the images, or even the size of video.
There are other software options depending on the disability that you have. If you’re hearing-impaired you might be using captions or software that can listen to what has been said and transcribe that into text. If you have another disability (such as a motor disability) you could use a switch access. This is a device that allows you to move through the interface by flipping a switch, or you could use eye tracking devices that track the movement of your eyes. By moving your eyes you can move a cursor around the screen. So there are lots of different accommodations depending on the particular need.
What should experienced web developers would know about accessibility?
Clearly the web has offered a big opportunity for companies and organisations to show-off their branding. Different websites have different layouts they use, different font sizes, different colours etc. They have different ways of interacting with the user, different menu systems, different ways of navigating, and workflows as a whole. However, if you’re a person with some accessibility challenges it takes much longer for you to get accustomed to the different workflows that are presented by different websites.
Here’s an example:
Let’s say you’re blind and you’re using a screen reader. What you have to do (most likely) is read the web page that you’re interacting with serially from top to bottom to familiarise yourself with it. This takes time. If the conventions are different from side to side it takes you time to go through all the content just to be able to sign up for a newsletter. You might want to order or buy something from that particular company’s website but if the workflow for purchasing an item is different for each website then it’s going to take you much longer to learn that workflow because you don’t have the visual cues that a sighted person might have. The placement of icons, the placement of the different elements, of the different buttons. You don’t get those clues, you have to go and discover them by reading the contents of most of the website.
The same goes if you have a motor disability. If you need to use a hardware device like switch access to go through the contents of the site, having a standardised setup could really help. You could develope a muscle memory (for example pressing a specific number of times you get to a particular feature on most websites, say the top navigation menu).
But right now for most websites, each navigation menu on the top is not at the same location, so you cannot really develop muscle memory with your assistive device. There are of course similar issues with other groups of disabilities so we should look at trying to follow existing conventions.
Forms of Navigation
Not everybody who uses a computer is using a mouse or a touch-screen phone/tablet. They might be using commands that come with an assistive software or hardware. Those commands require that your site is accessible using the keyboard. If your site isn’t then it might be hard for the assistive software or hardware to work with your website. Not sure which standards to use? There are varying accessibility standards. The ‘Web Content Accessibility Guidelines‘ are one of the most prominent. Follow those standards as much as possible and you’ll be helping to ensure that your website will be consistent with established patterns.
The same goes for the keyboard navigation. If you don’t actually test with assistive software you are not going to know the bottlenecks. you won’t know what issues your users are facing. Why not try some of the assistive software yourself. For example, f you have a Chromebook you could easily turn on a screen reader that comes built-in. Just turn that on and the screen reader exposes every command in a menu. It doesn’t require a very steep learning curve. The same goes for every other assistive feature on that platform. You can turn on magnification, colour filtering, on Android you can turn on a feature whereby you could use the volume buttons of your phone to simulate a switch access device, so somebody with a motor impairment that uses a hardware switch device could simulate that using the volume buttons of of your phone.
Descriptive Improvements
When developing a website, developers may be well intentioned and become overly descriptive with labels on elements. They might simply say too much about an element. There is this notion that if you have a disability it means that you don’t have the intellectual ability to understand what everybody else can understand and that’s simply not true. There is no need to go over the top when describing a UI element. Here’s a great example. If there is a button that minimises a video player, you don’t need to say things like “collapses and reduces the video player to a small size and places it at the bottom left side of the screen“. Just say “minimise” and people would understand from the context that it minimises a video player.
Of course, we have to bear in mind that there are disability users with intellectual disabilities or developmental disabilities. It is of course important to cater to those users by using language that could be understood by a 9th grade level. In general it’s best to avoid complex words, but other than that you don’t need to go over and above and try to overcompensate.
Web Usage is Evolving
As web capabilities have evolved over the years, people have started using the web in different ways. So what effects has this had. The development of the web has given people with disabilities a workaround. For many, they have truly been liberated by the proliferation of web applications. Before, if you want to go make a bank transaction you would have to go to a bank and complete some paperwork. If you’re blind, you will need some assistance to help you do that. If you’re deaf the person who is at the bank most likely doesn’t know any sign language so you might have difficulty explaining to them what needs to be done. If you have a motor disability it might be there is no ramp to get into the bank. So there are all sorts of issues when it comes to the physical world that completely disappear when you use a good website. A website also has no bias. If you visit a place and you have a disability and people there they don’t want accommodate you, you might have a hard time convincing them that you have the right to be offered services. Of course this should never happen, but it does – Particularly in developing countries). But a website doesn’t know that you have a disability. The web has also opened up the employment market to people with disabilities who can perform tasks that before would have required a secretary or an assistant to help them.
Even something as simple as reading a book has become easier. Let’s say you have learning disability or blindness. Software can now read a book to you over the web. Another great example is people with dyslexia. There are now tools that break up syllables or read the book using text-to-speech or have a dictionary on demand. They can access this easily on their computer or phone. For many people, it’s now really easy to to be accommodated through the web and feel very independent in because they can use the same websites and the same web apps as everybody else. It may seem insignificant, but it’s a wonderful feeling that you’re treated the same as every other customer of A particular business.
As web usage evolved and become more complicated, it has become even more important for web developers to take care of accessibility challenges. The web has removed a lot of accessibility challenges but if we don’t pay attention to the accessibility of our websites we’re going to see barriers that are inflexible. The real solution to this is standardisation and the W3C web accessibility initiative. This defines strategies, standards and resources to make the web accessible to people with disabilities.
The HTTP archive tracks lighthouse accessibility scores on over a million websites. The median lighthouse accessibility score is 62%. It’s interesting that 42% of pages correctly use alt attributes on images but only 12% of pages correctly label form elements. So the state of accessibility right now shows a lot of room for improvement. As web designers and developers we do need to redouble our efforts and perhaps provide more automated solutions for making web apps accessible. We need to pay attention to the ‘Web Content Accessibility Guidelines’. Even those standards still have room for improvement. Some of them are vague and too technical, or they use complicated language. But, if you’re a developer that wants to learn how different people with accessibility needs use your website, it would be a good idea to watch some videos on how different people use assistive software and then try and imagine yourself being in the shoes of those users.

Apple HomePod, Amazon Echo, Google Home and more: We put 7 speakers to the test
Image caption Amazon’s Alexa director Daren Gill has called voice “the next great interface”
For the last four weeks, I’ve been living in an Orwellian nightmare. One in which I have to watch every word I say because “they” are always listening. And by “they”, I mean Alexa, Siri and Google.
It seemed like a good idea – get seven smart speakers and test them in a real house to see how they affected our listening habits and daily routine.
At times, they’ve been pretty helpful. If we’re running low on biscuits, one of us can bark, “Hey Siri, add Hob Nobs to the shopping list” and a reminder appears on our phones.
During Storm Emma, Google kept me up-to-date on train cancellations, while our kids amused themselves for hours by asking Alexa what noise a cat makes.
Thankfully, none of the devices started spontaneously laughing in the middle of the night – but they were all prone to bouts of madness.
I once asked Alexa “what’s the weather in Yemen” and got the reply: “‘Das wetter’ is German for ‘the weather’.”
And when I told Google to “play music in the kitchen”, it responded by streaming Lee Brice’s Songs In The Kitchen to a speaker in the dining room (congratulations, Lee, on your new royalty stream).
To find out which smart assistant was the smartest, I put each of the speakers to the test – posing 50 random questions on music, sport and general knowledge. Like all good quiz show hosts, I only accepted their first answer.
Alexa fared best, with 37 correct answers, followed by Google on 32, and Siri, which scored a lowly 27.
Apple’s assistant was hobbled by its lack of integration with other apps – meaning it couldn’t read my calendar or look up recipes.
When it came to music-related queries, however, Siri had more success.
For instance, the HomePod was the only speaker that could parse the command “play the James Bond theme next”. Its competitors all tried to find a song called “James Bond Theme Next”, failed, and gave up.
You can find the full list of questions, and how the speakers responded, here.
As you’ll see, none of them are perfect (never ask for music by Haim in an Northern Irish accent) but smart speakers look set to replace the smartphone as the tech giants’ biggest growth products.
Choosing the right one can be tricky. So here’s our guide to the speakers, and how they might fit into your lifestyle.
Apple HomePod (£319)
Image copyright Apple
Apple has arrived late to the smart speaker market, but not through laziness.
The HomePod has been in development since 2012, and boasts a unconventional design – with seven tweeters (the speakers that produce treble) arranged in a circle to project music into every nook and cranny of your house. The bass is also punchy and well-balanced, even at low volumes.
I found it worked better with acoustic, singer-songwriter material. Playing Regina Spektor’s Samson, the HomePod championed the singer’s vocals without losing the detail in her piano work. On a busier song like Stevie Wonder’s Superstition, however, it struggled to pick out the star’s intricate drumming.
It’s also an incredibly insistent speaker – demanding your attention with a very “forward” soundstage. We found that was great in the hustle and bustle of a family kitchen, but less attractive when listening to music in bed at night.
One important note: You can’t set up the HomePod unless you have an iPhone or an iPad. The speaker is then tethered to that device and certain functions, like updating your shopping list, only work when they can “see” each other.
HomePod is also completely loyal to Apple Music. You can’t ask Siri to stream from Spotify or Deezer – although you can access them on your phone and beam them to the speaker.
Best for: Apple enthusiasts; audiophiles
Amazon Echo Plus (£139)
Image copyright Amazon
If you want a speaker that comes with a free light bulb, then Amazon’s Echo Plus is your only choice.
The speaker aims to be a “home hub”, controlling all sorts of connected devices, from your lights to your kettle. I wasn’t able to test those abilities, though, as the BBC budget didn’t stretch to buying me remote control curtains.
As a music player, the Echo Plus is competent but unspectacular – but it’d make an ideal replacement for a kitchen radio.
Alexa will happily stream from Spotify and Deezer, as well as Amazon’s own Music Unlimited service – which you get at a discount if you purchase an Echo device.
It’s particularly good at finding the music you want, even if you have a terrible memory. I managed to get Alexa to cue up Girls Aloud’s Love Machine by asking, “What’s the song that goes, ‘Let’s go, Eskimo?'”
One word of warning: Amazon’s streaming service doesn’t have a parental filter, so you’re stuck with the explicit versions of the songs in their catalogue.
And now that Amazon has leased Alexa to other speaker manufacturers, there are better devices in a similar price range.
Best for: Casual listening, smart assistant abilities
Ultimate Ears Megablast (£199)
Image copyright Ultimate Ears
The Megablast is a long, tall cylinder of fun, available in a range of colours (our review unit was a lurid yellow, which I became weirdly fond of).
It gives out a bassy, fulsome sound; which goes up really, really loud without losing any finesse. You can use Alexa to play songs from Amazon Music Unlimited (but not Spotify yet), or simply use it as a bluetooth speaker to stream music directly from your phone.
Best of all, you can unplug it and take it to a party, with a generous battery life that means you won’t be left tuneless when the clock strikes midnight. And it’s waterproof, so it won’t go kaput if you spill your drink.
On the downside, the microphone is poor at picking up your voice commands – especially when music is playing. And the charging port is awkwardly placed at the bottom of the speaker, meaning it has to be laid on its side when its plugged in, ruining the sound. (Ultimate Ears sells a separate charging dock, pictured above, for £35 if this is a deal-breaker).
Best for: Portability, volume
Sonos: One (£199)
Image copyright Sonos
Sonos are masters of multi-room audio, but the One is their first foray into smart speaker territory.
There’s an intriguing set-up, where you’re asked to wave your phone around the room while the unit emits a series of sci-fi bleeps and bloops.
This helps the speaker adapt to its environment and, to be fair, it performed admirably in our cluttered bedroom, with a weighty, dynamic delivery that belied its tiny size.
Superstition, which confounded Apple’s HomePod, sounded bright and lively, with a deep, funky bass and plenty of breathing room for Stevie Wonder’s vocals.
Best of all, Sonos welcomes all music streaming services – with 49 currently available in the UK, including Apple Music (not all of them can be controlled by Alexa, though).
You can also chain two Sonos speakers together to get stereo, while the Sonos app is the only one that allows you to tweak settings like treble and bass to tailor the music to your tastes. And if you buy multiple units, you can scare your family by playing ghost noises in the attic while you’re in the kitchen.
One small niggle: Sonos has programmed Alexa to speak over the start of your music, so you constantly miss the first five seconds your favourite album.
Best for: Stereo, choice of streaming services, multi-room audio
Google Home (£129)
Image copyright Google
It looks like an air freshener. An air freshener on the Starship Enterprise, but an air freshener nonetheless.
Still, I was quite enamoured with the Home’s sleek, matte white finish and the easygoing, friendly voice of its virtual assistant.
It transpires that her dialogue was written by Emma Coats, a former Pixar employee who drew up the film studio’s 22 rules of storytelling – which explains why Google feels more engaging than its competitors.
There are a few neat touches to the AI, too. When you ask Google to “flip a coin”, for example, you hear the sound of a coin being tossed before learning the result. Even better, the Google Home enables you to make voice calls to any UK landline or mobile number – for free.
Sadly, though, the device isn’t up to much as an actual speaker. It had the worst sound of all the units we tested, and was prone to distorted bass even at low volumes.
Best for: Personality, design

Luckily, fans of Google’s voice assistant have some alternatives. Sonos are promising a Google-enabled speaker later this year and JBL will release their Link 300 in the next couple of weeks.
It’s a chunky little device that works best on pop and hip-hop, with an eloquent sound that emphasises the low end thanks to a circular resonator on the back that pumps out the bass.
One neat feature is a wi-fi light that shows the strength of your internet connection (something I’d like to see on more devices, given the patchy wi-fi in our house).
In the end, this became our go-to speaker in the living room and kitchen, despite an infuriating five-minute fight to make it play the Hamilton soundtrack.
It turns out you had to say “OK Google, play ‘Hamilton: Original Broadway Cast Recording'” – a command that’s as intuitive as a lead wetsuit.
Best for: Google smarts with better sound.
Amazon Echo Show (£199)

The Echo Show has a 7-inch screen, which displays song lyrics while you listen. It’s a bit of a gimmick, but it was a big hit with our kids.
The device also came in handy in the kitchen, where we used it to display recipes and set timers without having to touch the screen with our sticky fingers.
All this functionality comes at the cost of sound quality, though. Don’t expect anything beyond your average clock radio.
Best for: Karaoke night
Secret option eight: Don’t buy any of them

Here’s the thing: With the possible exception of Sonos: One, you’re not getting true hi-fi sound with any of these devices.
If you’ve already got a good home stereo, it’s much cheaper to buy an Amazon Echo Dot (currently £39) and hook it up to your existing set-up with a simple cable.
Similarly, if you’ve got £300 to spend, you can get a decent hi-fi system and an Echo Dot with money to spare.
That way, you get all the benefits of voice control and music streaming without breaking the bank.
Best for: People who’ve already got speakers and have privacy concerns about this whole thing.
