What did you think about Behlül’s relationships with Bihter and Nihal? Did he love either of them? Did either of them love him?

I think he did actually love both of them, but in his own way. He seems to have a tendency to have a great big romance that he quickly burns out and rinse and repeat with the next person he fancies.

As to whether he was loved, I'd say yes by both, but also in a limited way. I think he's kind of like the high school crush of a girl from a very small town, where the girl wants to date someone mostly because she thinks it's exciting at that age. And so her crush toward the guy develops more out of her daily life having a very limited pool of potential boyfriends, than out of any wow moment of attraction to that guy in particular.

For Bihter, I think she would have equally fallen for a different person who was young, handsome and charming, and consistently close at hand to observe.

But I don't know if she'd have slept with anyone who was not so casual as Behlül. His cheerful lack of morals and friendly persistence surely helped a bit to remove some mental barriers in her mind. With someone less happy-go-lucky, she'd maybe just have had lovesickness and stayed at that as a 'noble' kind of compromise between cheating and withering without experiencing real love.

There is a word I can't quite translate, 'prepustiti se' (to let yourself go, to abandon yourself to a feeling/situation, can be have positive or negative connotations), which I feel works for both Bihter and Nihal's feelings to Behlül.

They were first pursued by him and they seem to have almost purposefully convinced themselves into loving him. Both were lonely and desperate in different ways.

Bihter was in an unhappy marriage, I don't think I need to elaborate too much as she herself describes it all in a self-aware way in the novel.

As to Nihal, she was frankly somewhat neglected by her family. Yes, she's otherwise "spoiled", but they made huge decisions to remove her brother, and her governess, and her kitchen buddies, and didn't even tell her until the very moment it had already happened! Extremely frustrating and scary for such an already isolated girl. She lived from day to day not knowing who she could lose next, no wonder she got all emo.

So when the situation came that everyone was suddenly eager to marry her to a guy - one she already knew and trusted and casually bantered with - I think half of the appeal would be a young girl's physical attraction to Behlül as a man, but the other half would be the idea of finally keeping someone for herself (because her family couldn't very well decide to whoosh away her husband on a whim, lol). I can see why she'd accept the situation.

hey my italian lit professor told about the Betrohed and also about another old important italian novel (by Foscolo) that the authors put the "love story" plot in it because basically love and drama always entratein the readers, but they actually wanted to write about others things that often get overlooked in theirs books.

It made me think about ask-i-memnu.

Do you think it may be the case for ask-i-memnu also? That readers get attached to the triangle/love story but the aspects thecauthor wanted to highlight in his book were others and get overlooked.

If so, which are these aspects that get not considered enough, both in popular reading and academic criticism, due to the excessive attention on the "forbidden love" part?

I don’t think that it is exactly the same thing with Aşk-ı Memnu. I haven’t yet finished The Betrothed (it is among the pile of books that I hopefully will finish in summer) but it is definitely a book written to highlight social issues, so I can definitely see how a love story was used to get people interested in these issues. Though to Manzoni’s credit he selected a love story that was very suitable for highlighting these social issues.

Aşk-ı Memnu is not a book written to highlight social issues. It is not as uninterested in social issues and divorced from the world as critics tend to accuse it of being, but it is definitely not a book written to highlight any social issue. I also don’t think that it is a “love story” in the common sense of the word though. The tagline of the soap opera is “a love story that searches for love” and though it is as cheesy as everything about that adaptation, it also sums it up quite nicely. It is a story about searching for someone to love you rather than about an actual romantic love between two people.

So yes, Aşk-ı Memnu is definitely a book whose narrative and plot is built around marriage and romantic love, but it is not a “love story” between Bihter and Behlül. It became so in popular culture both because of the expectation caused by the title and the ever-present expectation that any story must have a young attractive Male Lead and a young attractive Female Lead.

As for the title I have speculated before that it might have been chosen to draw in readers but decided against it:

“Maybe there is a simple explanation, “Forbidden Love” was maybe simply chosen as a title that would draw in readers, but I don’t know… Halit Ziya was from a rich family and didn’t need money and he wrote Aşk-ı Memnu in incredibly ornate prose that is not easily read by most readers, actually the literary community he was a part of relished in not being understood by the masses, I don’t feel that he would give a salacious title to his book just to have more readers.”

But is the title just about Bihter and Behlül’s relationship (a relationship that is, let’s be frank, that at most 20 percent of the book is about) or does it have other meanings?

Once again I want to quote from Mehmet Rauf’s (Halit Ziya’s close friend and fellow writer) 1901 review of the book. Because he seems as confused as we are 123 years later:

So is Nihal’s “search for love” the forbidden love or is it Bihter and Behlül’s “forbidden love”? If Bihter and Behlül’s forbidden love is “the part the author really wants to write” then why in God’s name had he chosen as the subject of his book the comparatively less obviously interesting subject of Nihal’s life? Who knows?

But that’s the good thing about Aşk-ı Memnu. I don’t know what the writer fully intended with it, which is a rare thing for a Turkish classic. This is the most personal thing Halit Ziya said about this book and his characters:

“Firdevs Hanım, Nihal, Bihter, especially the unfortunate Beşir. Now as I think of these I am under the impression that I see all of them, one by one, from afar. Especially Nihal, in front of my eyes, with her gaunt yellow face, always wanders around next to her father at the pine groves of the Island. I am hearing Beşir’s coughs. From where did I find that unfortunate Ethiopian? Maybe there was a face similar to him in my family.”

So, in conclusion, even though I don’t think that Halit Ziya was using any part of his story as a spoonful of sugar to make the medicine go down, I also don’t agree that the part that he wanted to write was Bihter and Behlül’s forbidden love. I think he wanted to write all of it simply because he wanted to, no part of Aşk-ı Memnu is there because it had to be there. But yes, the public latched onto Bihter and Behlül because sex sells.

As for the title of the book, I don’t know, I am not sure. His friend clearly didn’t know either so I am in good company.

I finished rebels nearly a week ago. It took me a while to finish cause i had to study. and then i finished it but i couldnt write. now i can write, finally.

First of all, i loved this show. I loved the chracters and the story so much.

Art style is different than clone wars clone wars art style is my favorite but rebels art style was good too. In the beggining i didnt like both art style but in time i fell in love with them. In time both of these art styles improved so much and i like the way they ended.

I love our space family. their relationship with eachother is so good. I loved kanan hera ezra sabine zeb chopper they were all such good written characters.

Episodes were fun. seeing rebels try to make galaxy a better place and save galaxy from the empire is what ı wanted bad batch to be when i was watching bad batch s1. but they were all tired and wanted to give omega a better life than a life with war and ı understand that.(everything comes back to tbb these days ı cant help it😅 ) after bad batch, seeing rebels trying to manage making galaxy a better place and being a family is so nice to watch.

Now i am going to write about last season's last episodes. There was so much more I could write, but I forgot most of it because I watched it a week ago. I took notes of the parts that stuck out to me in the last episodes and I want to write somethings about them.

I really liked Kanera they were so good together i shipped them from the beginning but hey didnt get a happy ending and i am so sorry about that but they have a son he was cute.

Kanan and Ezra fulfilled their destiny. And it is sad that we had to saw master and padawan sacrificing themselves for their loved ones. I wish we could have saw more of them happy with their family but they were meant to sacrifice themselves.🥹

And Ezra had to let go of his master it was too painful to watch. He could save his master, but at the same time he couldn't. But at least he saved Ahsoka.

I wanted Kallus to have a character development like Zuko. Well he did but i thought he was going to go more adventures with the family. I am sorry that he didnt spend more time with the family but i love him and his character development.

Gregor died.I loved him. It is so sad to see clones die.It breaks my heart i hope we wont see more clone deaths.I love clones so much.

I am watching star wars for the first time in chronological order (ı am now watching empire strikes back) ı havent seen ahsoka yet but i saw some spoilers. From what i understand ahsoka and sabine is try to bring back ezra. It makes sense ahsoka is like rebels s5 but I wish they had made it animation as the 5th season of Rebels.(i like animations more).But I don't have any prejudgment and I'm sure I'll love Ahsoka too.

And finally,

Kanan saw Hera one last time as he sacrificed himself, right? I didn't get it wrong.

The civilian stared at the destruction on screen, and almost cut themself chopping vegetables.

Another office building had gone down today. There’d been an evacuation warning this time, but there were still three dead and dozens injured.

Then the villain’s face appeared on the TV. The civilian looked away, but they could still hear the villain’s cold iron voice.

“I trust that in time, [Hero], you will give me what I want.”

A shiver ran up the civilian’s spine.

The hero arrived not long after, with unfocused eyes and rubble dust in their hair. The civilian welcomed them home, and told them to wash up for dinner. But instead, the hero stood in the entryway, glaring at the screen. “Why is this on?”

The civilian followed their gaze. The news was showing a montage of photos – some of the villain, some of the wreckage – while the anchor interviewed an expert.

The hero snatched the remote and shut off the TV. “I don’t want to even think about that fucker.”

Why don’t you give yourself up? the civilian thought.

Then they stopped dead, and wanted to slap themself. What a horrible thought. A traitorous thought. Nothing should have terrified them more than the mental image of their partner in danger.

But how many people had died now? How long would it be before the civilian’s friends and family were among the casualties? The villain had never actually said they wanted the hero, but everyone could read between the lines. With every day that the hero prolonged things, more people got hurt.

And it’s not like the hero would actually be in danger. Even at their weakest, they were leagues stronger than the villain.

So why?

But the civilian looked at the hero’s exhausted stance, and they held their tongue.

“Do you think you could tell me about your day?” The hero sat at the table, put their face in their hands. “I need to focus on something else, for a bit.”

Talking always soothed the hero. So the civilian stuffed down their questions, and spoke.

After dinner, the hero placed a box on the table. “I got something for you.”

Inside were a row of cerulean blue darts.

The civilian’s mouth went dry. “These are . . .”

The darts were one of the hero’s inventions. Sleek, precise, poisoned. Lethal as gunshot, silent as air.

“Just, keep a few around the house,” the hero said. “Please. To protect yourself.”

The civilian met their eyes. “If [Villain] decides to drop a bomb on this place, a dart isn’t going to stop them.”

“[Villain] isn’t going to do that,” the hero said. The civilian wanted to ask how they were so sure, but the hero continued. “Just promise you’ll keep the darts. And try to not go out too often, at least for a little while. I worry so much about you.”

The civilian softened. “Sure,” they said. They took the hero’s hand. “I promise to stay safe.”

“So, what do you say?” the villain asked, a glint in their eyes.

The civilian resisted the urge to glance away. “I hadn’t thought you actually meant singing.”

The villain’s drawing room was elegant, and hemmed by large glass windows, blackened by night. Hell roared in the fireplace.

The civilian sat on a plush leather couch, their legs propped up on a pillow. Their wheelchair, a new gift from the villain, was parked within reach.

“I’m not a good singer,” the civilian tried.

The villain smiled. “It will nevertheless be breathtaking.”

“Does it have to be this song?” 

They held the lyrics to ‘Fly me to the Moon’ in their hands.

“I’d like that one, but no. You can sing anything you’d like.”

The civilian looked back and forth between the paper and the villain. They wished there was someone else here who could confirm that this was, in fact, insane.

But at least there were no knives in the vicinity.

The civilian sighed. “Do you have any Fleetwood Mac?”

And so, as the hours stretched on, the civilian sang. Dolly Parton. Gorillaz. Elton John. Mitski.

The villain rested in their chair, head back, eyes closed. They looked as though they were tasting heaven.

Eventually, the civilian needed a break. They weren’t sure whether or not to thank the villain when they were handed a glass of water.

In the end, they did. Better courteous than sorry.

“Any time, darling,” the villain said. They got up, and started to massage the civilian’s shoulders. “It’s nothing, considering how you’ve already made me the luckiest person alive.”

The civilian tried not to tense too noticeably beneath their touch. “I think I know why you’re doing this.”

“Yes? And why is that?”

“[Hero] has been your enemy for years now. They’ve stolen victory from you. Again and again. So you want to . . . want to possess what’s theirs.”

It was painful to talk about themself in this way.

“Interesting theory,” the villain said, fingers working into the civilian’s muscles. “But once again, you’re completely wrong.”

The civilian swallowed. “I am?”

The villain knelt down, and wrapped their arms around the civilian’s chest, placed their chin on their shoulder. Their breath tickled the civilian’s skin. “It is laughable, love, to think that you were ever theirs.”

The civilian closed their eyes. “I misspoke. I’m sorry.”

“You mention [Hero] a lot,” the villain observed. Their hands spidered up the civilian’s throat. “I hate the sound of their name on your tongue.”

“Please.”

“Say my name.”

The civilian blinked. Was the villain serious?

“[Villain].”

“Again.”

A slow, steadying breath. “[Villain].”

The villain held them, and savoured.

Suddenly, a security alarm began to ring.

The civilian froze, but the villain sprang into action. They lifted the civilian into their wheelchair. Tightened the straps restraining their arms.

The civilian’s mind whirled.

Could it really be the hero?

“Don’t look so hopeful, love,” the villain said, pushing them forward. “You will never be taken from me again.”

Wait. The civilian stiffened. What the hell did the villain mean by “again”?

I started this blog on May of 2023 and I can't believe how much I've written in the course of eight months and, even though it wasn't as much as I would have liked, I'm glad I began this little hobby of mine and thank you again for every support you have given me.

Forbidden love wouldn't be good for Azriel, Elain, or anybody. Not to mention it's not really what's going on here.

Forbidden love is a thing when there are actual consequences for two people being together. Your family disowns you. A guy from the Russian Bratva falls in love with a the daughter of the boss of the opposing Italian mafia. You fall in love with your sisters boyfriend and it's going to destroy your relationship with your sister. You fall in love with the wife of another High Lord which could actually lead to problems with alliances between Courts.

Forbidden love is NOT E/riel.

Rhys said he'd make Az regret it if he caught Az panting after Elain but......Rhys also told Cassian to get Nesta out of his sight before he killed her. Nesta told Feyre she'd rip out her throat if she let Lucien anywhere near Elain.

These are EMPTY threats made by characters who are pissed off but at the end of the day, we KNOW that Rhys would never hurt someone Feyre loved, we KNOW Nesta wouldn't actually rip out Feyre's throat and we KNOW Rhys isn't going to torture his brother or kick him out of the IC. There are truly zero consequences for Az and Elain actually ending up together and you know what would happen if Az and Elain told Lucien they were in love and she was breaking the bond? He'd say ok.

Lucien was forced to watch as his own father murdered the female he loved and who loved him in return, the female he did think was his mate because of how much he cared for her. So if he didn't retaliate for that, I'm pretty sure he's not going to kick up a fuss over a female who has not yet shown interest in accepting their bond telling him she wants to be with someone else. After two years, he's probably expecting it 😂. And we know for a fact that at the end of the day, SJM writes the males so they just want the female to be happy even if it's not with them (which I think is proven when Lucien left Elain because he knew she was still in love with Graysen). He was already willing to walk away so she could be with him.

And all your others points, Yes!

Lucien, just like Rhys and Cassian were worried about how thin their mates had gotten. And yes, we know Rhys and Cassian had sexual thoughts about Feyre and Nesta but they thought a lot outside of that.

You know who was very physically into the other? Tamlin. No one can deny he was interested in hooking up with Feyre but that was not a point in favor of endgame. So Az wanting to get down on his knees for Elain is absolutely no different than what Feyre and Tamlin shared. It's possible Tamlin also wondered whether he might have a bond with Feyre (we know she wondered it about with Tamlin) so again....it doesn't mean anything.

To me there are so many reasons Lucien is clearly the best match for Elain and there are so many reasons why Az clearly is not interested in Elain for the right reasons.

And I know there's not a lot to go on with Gwynriel just yet (though some of their moments are a pretty big deal) but he's already so much more likeable around. The Az with Elain is a tortured emo sad boy who hates the world and that's just so teenage angst to me. SJM herself said she knows what REAL love is between partners who are equals and that's not the vibe I'm getting with E/riel.

I was thinking about that scene where madara told hashirama to kill himself or tobirama to get him trust the senju and it made me realize one of the reasons tobirama hated madara was because of the power he had over hashirama.

Like we know that tobirama loves his brother and respects him (it is the most obvious thing we can take from his scenes in canon i think) and he knows hashirama is strong and can take care of himself, he is literally called the god of shinobi but when it comes to madara it doesn't matter how strong hashirama is, because hashirama doesn’t want to use his power to stop madara. He still values their friendship and wants to make their dream reality despite madara refusing his peace offers. So of course that scares tobirama because this is his only brother and it seems like hashirama would do anything to have his peace with madara. At the end it is not like tobirama is wrong because when madara asks him to kill himself or his brother hashirama is like "okay! Thank you for giving me a choice i am gonna kill myself now!" Like i know madara stops him at the end but it doesn't matter because tobirama saw hashirama was going to do it, his only brother was going to kill himself because madara asked him. No wonder he hated madara, ı would too if someone had that much power over my only family.

Aşk-ı Memnu: What is Love?

(baby don’t hurt me, don’t hurt me, no more)

I am referencing this translation of the text by E. A. Deverell.

In Aşk-ı Memnu, Halit Ziya forces us to question what exactly love means. In this ask, I made the somewhat sweeping claim that Halit Ziya does not allow any character to experience love as a magical and inexplicable thing. Having thought about this, I would actually like to say that he only allows one character to experience love in this manner.

But firstly, I would like to make another bizarre claim: Nihal and Behlül were the most compatible couple in the novel— at least based on how they love.

As I said in the previous post, I suspect almost every character in the novel does not actually love other characters, but rather is in love with love itself, or their concept of love.

[Mademoiselle de Courton] had a tenacious need to love. The old chastity of this weary heart, who had not been able to know her mother, not been able to love her father, not been able to feel in her bosom any tie to anyone, and who writhed in the absence of love, always looked for some way to expend itself. She would befriend the children around her, the servants of the house in which she lived, her cat, her parrot, and would spill out to them the hidden treasure of her heart. But one day, she would suddenly discover a hollowness opening up in these things that were spoken, and seeing, with bitter clarity, upon what a barren, sandy desert the fountain of her affection flowed, she would become an enemy to the children, the servants, the cats, and the parrots that five minutes earlier had been her friends. (Chapter Three)

Mademoiselle de Courton wants to fill a void. She feels she has never had an attachment; she is in love with the idea of attachment. What precisely draws her to love Nihal? Halit Ziya insists that it is her own need to love, and not any feelings towards Nihal. She desperately needs to care for another human.

Adnan Bey’s relationship to his children is also wrapped up in a fear of loneliness. It seems telling that he sees his relation to them as a ‘sacrifice’, and a matter of ‘sense’. (These exact words may not reflect the original, @faintingheroine may be able to speak better to the exact meaning of this passage from Chapter Two.) He wants to fulfil duties and materially improve his and his children’s lives.

Peyker and Nihat are arguably in love not with one another but with the family unit; Firdevs is clearly in love only with money and personal beauty and youth, a husband being a means to her ends.

Behlül speaks always of love in terms of a story, in terms of the book of his romances. He wants to love, in the passionate poetic sense of the word, to worship, almost.

Bihter is painfully incompatible with Behlül in this regard. She does not wish to love or to be loved (even if she tells herself this is so), but rather to make love. She has material needs that she wishes to fulfil, and Behlül could never get from her that picture of the poetic damsel he so desires. At face value, her material concern might align her better with Adnan Bey, but this does not work at all in the novel. Bihter’s material needs clash with Adnan Bey’s. They cannot satisfy one another when they both seek to satisfy themselves.

Nihal, on the other hand, desperately wishes to be an object of love. Her father’s love, Bihter’s love, Bülent’s love, Behlül’s, Beşir’s, anybody’s love, so long as she can feel that she is loved in some way. She does not love the people she has relationships with, but their reciprocation of her attentions.

The novel is dominated by upper-class characters who cannot love in any natural way. There must always be a mechanic behind it, a selfishness, a pathology. Sometimes it is disturbing to behold them, as Behlül imposes his literary fantasies on woman after woman, fancying to love each one in turn.

But Beşir does not operate under these conditions. Why should he love Nihal? What good does it bring him? Is it the idea of loving her that attracts him? I would argue that he actually does love Nihal, truly— platonically or otherwise— and specifically that he loves Nihal the girl, rather than the relationship they share. He in fact puts that relationship at risk when he disobeys her, but it is all in service of Nihal the girl and done out of love. There are many, many problems with this dynamic, but it does seem interesting to me that the only person to truly feel love for another person as a person in this novel may be a slave. His society treats him as less than human, but only he is humane.

Oooo yes, well, let’s start with Chrissy’s side with Laura, Philip and Matt. Laura obviously hated Eddie for taking her daughter away from her, she believed he was everything that she stood against in life and she could never and would never accept him. Even when Chrissy sent letters telling her how happy she was and that they were starting a family together, she still hated him to the bitter end, not just for who he was and how he lived his life, but because Chrissy chose him over her. The feeling was mutual, Eddie also hated her for what she put Chrissy through, for starving her and neglecting her, for all the emotional abuse that still effects her so badly. She was the reason she was cursed and he never forgave her for it. He probably would have tried for Chrissy’s sake if she had ever come around to make things better, but he would never have trusted her. Especially around the girls.

Philip was apprehensive of Eddie and how he was connected to his daughter going missing, but the reason why he didn’t try to build a relationship with him at first was mainly because of Laura. He didn’t make any contact with either of them until about six months after they moved to Chicago and didn’t see them until Livvy was born. Once he got to know Eddie he could see that he was a good man who loved his daughter very much. Eddie still has his issues with Philip, for standing there and not doing anything to protect his daughter, but he can see that while he’s a weak man, he does have a kind heart and loves his daughter and granddaughters. They get along well enough. Eddie can see that he’s trying and that’s enough for him to meet him in the middle.

Matt didn’t know what to think of Eddie, he was the guy who everyone thought kidnapped and murdered his sister and then they guy who took her away. He spoke with Chrissy a couple of times before they moved to Chicago, but he was confused and angry about what had happened. It wasn’t until Livvy was born when he went to see her and Chrissy with his dad that he started to get to know him. Eddie really felt for Matt after Chrissy moved out, he knew how much Chrissy loved him and missed him, and he knew the kid must have felt abandoned so he really went out of his way to connect with him and take him under his wing when he came around. They have some stuff in common, Matt’s a pretty big closet nerd. While he loves Matt very much, he can see a lot of his father and even his mother in him, so there’s some strain, especially when he hurts or upsets Chrissy, but he’ll always be there for him.

And on Eddie’s side there’s just Wayne and we know how he loves his Chrissy girl. He knew she was special the moment he saw her and Eddie together at the hospital and was immediately charmed and delighted by her. He loves her and protects her with the same ferocity that Eddie does and was happy to give her a home when she left hers. Chrissy was nervous of Wayne at first, afraid that he would hate her for everything she put Eddie through, and burdening him when she moved in. But he was so much like Eddie, sweet and kind, a true gentleman. He made her feel safe and put her at ease. Chrissy adores him and sees him as more of a father than her own.

Guess there’s also Eddie’s dad though he’s not really family, he’s a scumbag. We’ll see how he and Chrissy react to one another in future stories.
