Yamaji Ebine's Onna no Ko ga Iru Basho wa

I have made a great discovery! I first came across Yamaji Ebine's Onna no Ko ga Iru Basho wa (女の子がいる場所は - Wherever There Are Girls) in 2023 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! rankings. It placed number 4 in female readers' category. I have put it in my "check later" list, and moved on. Because I already had 98 volumes of manga to read. But that didn't stop me from reading the two free chapters on the publisher's site, and loving them.

Fast forward to April... And this manga made it to the news again! Yamaji Ebine won the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in the short work category. Now, the universe was telling me to read it already... And luckily, Bookwalker had the perfect coinback campaign with the perfect timing...

This single-volume manga tells the story of 10-year-old girls from around the world: Saudi Arabia, Morocco, India, Japan, and Afghanistan. Countries change, cultures change, but all girls have to face some sort of prejudice and learn how to deal with it by themselves. This concept is brilliant. Even if those problems don't exist in your country, Yamaji makes you feel a connection to these girls. It changes shape and degree, but it is always there, no matter where you are. As women, we have all had our moments of realization about discrimination or gender roles being imposed on us as little girls. Even if you seem to be readily accepting all those, you always question things inside your head. Most keep it to themselves, and never voice their doubts, but here, Yamaji perfectly captures this inner voice and the innocence of children.

Her simple art with sparse dialogue helps get her message across. This is the kind of manga you can make your elementary school daughter read so that she gets to know more about the word, and you can enjoy yourself as an adult. We all know women have to deal with terrible things -especially in certain countries-. But when it happens somewhere we don't directly see it, it's easier to dismiss. This little manga is the perfect opportunity to stop and think about it. These short stories about little girls' struggles feel so universal that where they come from lose significance, and you are left deeply sympathizing with them. And you suddenly realize how lucky you are because you were allowed to go to school, and you are not regarded as a failure because you are unmarried.

I suck at shilling things I love, but if someone ever comes across this post, please get and read this manga. Make your children read it. I don't think I've read something this simple yet this impactful in a while.

7/26は相模原障がい者殺傷事件で命を奪われた19名の方々の本命日。

舞踏仲間と、現場である津久井やまゆり園の献花台前にて祈りの舞踏をしました。

ザーザーの雨とゴロゴロの雷は、浄化の雨。。？

いや！この事件を忘れさせてはいけない、思い出して自分に問おう、、潜む差別の心を引っ張り出し浄化させよう、というメッセージだった。

共に生きる社会を考える会主催の「犠牲者を偲ぶ会」では、黙祷の間、笛を吹かせていただきました。カザルスの「鳥の歌」を。

死刑囚になると、接見もできず、手紙のやり取りも禁じられるため、植松死刑囚は再審請求を行った。

死刑になるほどの事件を起こしたのは何故か、、事件を起こさぬよう、周囲ができたことは何かを考え合う。それを封じられている。

顔を合わせて互いの思いを聴き合うことが、今を生きる人間にとってどれほど大切なことか。

県主催の、やまゆり園の中で行われた追悼式は、一般市民の献花をシャットアウトし、行われた。なんとも哀しい。

一夜明けたら、抜けるような地球色の空と、吹く風にのる雲。

心地よい風になりたい。

July 26th was the anniversary of the murder of 19 people at Tsukui Yamayuri En, a facility for the disabled in Sagamihara City.A staff member working there was the murderer.

With my butoh friends, I performed a prayer dance in front of the dedication stand. Afterwards, I played Casals' "Song of the Birds" on my recorder.

That day, heavy rain and thunder, was it a cleansing rain?

No! It was a rain of message: let us not forget this incident, let us remember, let us pull out the discriminatory mind that lurks inside of us and purify it.

in Japan, when a person is on death row, he or she is not allowed to have access to the prison and is forbidden to exchange letters.

That is why the criminal, a prisoner on death row, filed a request for a retrial in order to meet with others.

Why did he have such a horrific case that he was sentenced to death?What can people around him do to prevent the incident from happening?

Prohibiting contact with the outside world blocks us from thinking.

How important it is for people living today to meet face to face and listen to each other's thoughts!

The memorial service held at the Yama-Yuri-en Garden, sponsored by the prefectural government, shut out the public from offering flowers. It was a sad thing.

As the night dawned, there was an earth-colored sky and clouds drifting in the breeze.

今昨日の朝ごはん。

ちくわとゆかりの混ぜごはんおにぎり、おだしの旨み！ねばねばサラダ乗せ冷やっこ、おかひじきのツナマヨ和え、えのき茸となめこと長ねぎのお味噌汁。

昨日も出かける用事があったので、メニューはパパッと出来るものを選びました。まずおかひじきですが、前日の内に湯がいてツナをぶっかけて冷蔵庫に冷やしておきました。

それを豆乳マヨネーズと和えて、お皿に盛り付けてからごまをパラリと。野菜がこれだけだと栄養が少ないかなと少ないかなということで、この日もアイコの出番。

主菜はファミマで買ってきた長芋と海草がたっぷりのサラダを乗せた冷やっこ。

その名の通りお出汁は効いてましたが、冷やっこのソースとしてはちょっぴり味が薄い。だし醤油をかければよかったな🤔

🍙はちくわを小口切りにしたものとゆかりを混ぜて握りました。ちくわは1本使ったんですが、意外と存在感が薄い💦💦食感も塩味も少なめでもう1本切るべきでした。ゆかりが効いているので、不味くはなかったですけど。

そしてお味噌汁。メインはフリーズドライのいつものみそ汁のなめこと長ねぎですが、えのき茸を湯がいたままのお湯で戻しまして、かなり存在感をアピールしてるんじゃないかと思います。

なめこのつるつる感とえのき茸のしゃきしゃき感が合わさって、それがお豆腐ともバッチリ合ってました。
