Player Review-Capcom Generation: Dai 3 Shuu Koko ni Rekishi Hajimaru (1998) Other Names: Capcom Generations 3: The First Generation, Capcom Generation Collection 3: History Begins Here, Capcom Generation 3,  カプコン ジェネレーション -第3集 ここに歴史はじまる- System(s): Sega Saturn Publisher: Capcom Developer: Capcom Original system(s): all four games ran on their own unique arcade boards Game total: 4 Games included: Exed Exes, Pirate Ship Higemaru, Son Son, Vulgus Sound driver: SCSP/CD-DA (65 tracks) Peripherals supported: 6 Player Genre: Compilation Number of players: 1-2 Capcom Generation 3 really isn't much better than the first 2 games in the series. While it probably has the most variety among them, the games on it are all from 1984-1985 and if you know anything about Capcom as a company, you know they were in their infancy stages at this point. Their greatest hits didn't really start coming out until about 1987 when Mega Man was released. Mega Man is not only Capcom's flagship chracter but he is also the face of their 4th highest grossing franchise.
This collection consists of Exed Exes, SonSon, Vulgas, and Pirate Ship Higemaru. Exed Exes & Vulgas are vertical-scrolling shooters, SonSon is a side-scrolling shooter and Pirate Ship Higemaru is a maze game. I'm sure these were all considered revolutionary or first-rate when they were new but it's hard to go back to games like these because not only are they primative by the standards of what would have been considered "current" when the collection came out but also by the standards of the genres they fit into. SHUMPS & scrolling shooters aren't like platformers where there wasn't really much improvement by the fifth generation of gaming. In fact, i'd go as far as to say 2D platformers were still BETTER than most 3D platformers at the time. I'd much rather play Donkey Kong Country, Adventure Island or Earthworm Jim as opposed to Crash Bandicoot, Klonoa or Banjo-Kazooie.
The common theme among the Capcom Generation games is that they are collectible. You can tell in the cover art that these were intended to be collector's items. Maybe Capcom thought you should have a piece of their history and have it all in one place via your PlayStation or Sega Saturn collection. Vulgus is the only one that isn't on any other consoles, it only exists in arcades and as a floppy disk. It was an early PC game. Collections usually aren't for people who just want to try older games they never played though, it's usually for the best games or a legitimate franchise developed by the company and none of these games really fit that description.
THE GOOD -This is the only game in the series that actually offers some variety. The others either feature games in the same series, games that are similar in theme or games that all feature the same gameplay type. -Pirate Ship Higemaru & SonSon so far are maybe the most enjoyable games i've played in these collections. They aren't great by any stretch of the imagination but they are JUST challenging and interesting ENOUGH for them to be playable for a few hours.
THE BAD -Just like the other games in the series, the games in the collection just flat out aren't very fun. This is something you get if you are a Capcom fan not if you are actually looking for some interesting games to play. I give Capcom Generation 3 a, 4.0 out of 10 CAPCOM FANDOM PURPOSES ONLY

Player Review-Capcom Generation: Dai 2 Shuu Makai to Kishi (1998) Other Titles: Capcom Generations 2: Chronicles of Arthur, Capcom Generation Collection 2: The Demon World and the Knight, Capcom Generation 2,  カプコン ジェネレーション -第2集 魔界と騎士- System(s): Sega Saturn Publisher: Capcom Developer: Capcom Original system(s): Capcom Ghosts 'n Goblins hardware, Capcom CPS-1, SNES Game total: 3 Games Included: Ghosts 'n Goblins (Makaimura), Ghouls 'n Ghosts (Daimakaimura), Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts (Choumakaimura) Sound driver: SCSP (1Track) Genre: Compilation, Action Number of players: 1-2
Capcom Generation 2 is the "Chronicles of Arthur" or the collection of the Ghosts N' Goblins or Ghouls N' Ghosts games. If you know anything about these games, they are extremely hard and that's about the gist of their value. They are platforming action-adventures that offer mild enjoyment for a while. I don't really get the point of the Capcom Generation series, especially considering they all came out in 1998. The company had produced so many great games by then that they could have condensed the 5 disks into one big collection and offered more variety.
The problem with making a collection out of this series is that they barely changed directions between installments. All 3 of these games feel like the SAME game. It's not like a Mario Bros. or a Sonic the Hedgehog where each game in the series is different enough to feel like a new and meaningful experience.
THE GOOD -At least it's better than the first one. While I don't think Ghouls n' Ghosts/Ghosts 'n Goblins games are that great, they are at least not as boring as the vertical-scrolling shooters from Capcom Generation 1.
THE BAD -There's really nothing here. You would be better off getting these games off of the Wii Virtual console or something like that. I give Capcom Generation 2 a 1.5 out of 10 CAPCOM FANDOM PURPOSES ONLY

Player Review-Capcom Generation: Dai 1 Shuu Gekitsuiou no Jidai (1999)
Other Titles: Capcom Generations 1: Wings of Destiny, Capcom Generation Collection 1: The Era of Flying Aces, Capcom Generation,  カプコン ジェネレーション -第1集 撃墜王の時代- System(s): Sega Saturn Publisher: Capcom Developer: Capcom Original system(s): Capcom 1942 hardware, Capcom 1943 hardware Game total: 3 Games included: 1942, 1943, 1943 Kai Sound driver: SCSP (1Track) Genre: Compilation, Shooting Number of players: 1-2
The Capcom Generation series exists as a piece of nostalgia for gamers who are fans of the Capcom brand. There is no other reason to own any of these. Maybe Volume 3 has SOME value, because it has games on it like SonSon and Pirate Ship Higemaru most probably have never heard of and might want to sample but for the most part you are literally buying physical copies of a limited rom collection.
The Wings of Destiny set consists of the games from the 19XX series but only the earlier games in the series and excluding 1941 (1942, 1943, 1943 Kai), if you've never played any of those games than you should know that all 3 are insanely boring. These are games I would play on a cell phone if I was stuck somewhere with nothing to do because at least my mind would be occupied but other than that the gameplay style is too dated. This came out in 1998 too which is 2 years after 19XX: War Against Destiny came out. It's a game within the same series but is miles ahead in terms of the graphics and the quality of gameplay, so it would have been nice to see it in this collection.
THE GOOD -Nothing in particular
THE BAD -1943 is the best game on this disk and even THAT is boring. It's just stage after stage of mindless air and watercraft shooting. -Actually acquiring this game will probably run you at least 40$ just to keep as a collector's item, there's nothing on this you will enjoy playing or that you will revisit later. I give this collection a 1.0 out of 10 CAPCOM FANDOM PURPOSES ONLY

Player Review-Capcom Generation: Dai 4 Shuu Kokou no Eiyuu (1998)
Other Titles: Capcom Generations 4: Blazing Guns,  Capcom Generation Collection 4: Lone Hero, Capcom Generation 4,  カプコン ジェネレーション -第4集 弧高の英雄 System(s): Sega Saturn Publisher: Capcom Developer: Capcom Original system(s): Capcom Commando Hardware, Capcom CPS-1, Capcom Gun.Smoke Hardware Game total: 3 Games included: Commando (Senjou no Ookami; 戦場の狼), Mercs (Senjou no Ookami II; 戦場の狼II), Gun.Smoke (ガンスモーク) Sound driver: SCSP/CD-DA (64 tracks) Peripherals supported: 6 Player Genre: Compilation, Shooting Number of players: 1-3 Capcom Generation 4 features some early Run n' Gun games. They are basically top-down vertical-scrolling shooters but I actually find these to be a little bit more enjoyable than the aircraft based SHUMPS like 1942 and Vulgus. The collection consists of Commando, Gun.Smoke & Mercs. All 3 of these games offer basically the same experience but Mercs is probably the one you will have the most fun with because it came out later in the company's history so naturally Capcom was better at making these type of games by then.
Similar to many of the other games in these collections, these are basically "cell phone games". They aren't arcade classics like Pac-Man or NBA Jam that you would still play today. You will get a few hours of enjoyment out of each but they don't offer any replay value.
THE GOOD -The Capcom Run n' Gun games are actually some of the most enjoyable in their collections.
THE BAD -You're not really getting the most for your money here. Whether you bought this collection when it was new or you purchased it used on an online shopping network or something like that, it will likely just sit on a shelf after you've tested it out. I give this collection a 3.0 out of 10 CAPCOM FANDOM PURPOSES ONLY
